Want to build up neighborhood morale and safety? The National Night Out is held nationwide in August, but most Houstonians find August terrifically hot and muggy… not so fun for a block party! Lanham Drive residents held their nights-out in April and October for over a decade and it truly enabled those residents to connect and enjoy each other, thus feeling more a part of our terrific neighborhood in Governor’s Place. NATIONAL NIGHT OUT IN OCTOBEREver feel a bit wistful that you aren’t more connected with your neighbors? Want to build up neighborhood morale and safety? MAINTAINING PROPERTY VALUESOne of the important purposes of a homeowner’s association is to enforce the terms of the Declaration of Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions that are “attached to” our properties when we buy them. These documents provide for an Architectural Control Committee to approve changes or additions to the exteriors of our homes or lots. If you are planning to paint your house or replace your roof, contact Crest Management at 281-579-0761 and ask for an ACC form. Please fi ll out the form and return it for approval by the ACC Committee. While it may be an inconvenience, it is a means of cooperating with your neighbors, so that we all maintain the “curb appeal” that attracts buyers. This means more dollars when you want to sell your home.

Another important part of the DCCR concerns the enforcement of deed restrictions. Governors Place does this by having Crest do two monthly inspections. If you receive a notice for a deed restriction violation, don’t feel insulted but please don’t ignore it. If you don’t understand it or think there is a mistake, call Crest Management at 281-579-0761 or send a written response. Most of the time, violations are corrected after one notice and no further action is required. Let’s all work together to help keep our community a nice place to live.

WASTE REMOVALPlease remember not to place your garbage out any sooner than the night before the scheduled pick-up day.

After pick-up, all garbage cans should be kept out of public view. They should not be kept in front of garages, in the front yards of any home or on the side of any home. Please make every effort to conceal the trashcans from public view on non-trash days.

RECREATIONAL VEHICLESParking recreational vehicles in the community is a violation of the governing rules and regulations. We understand this is the time of year vacations and family visits are planned, so if you will take a moment to call Crest Management at 281-579-0761 to notify us as to when you will have your recreational vehicle(s) in the driveway, we will give you 1 to 2 days grace period. We understand people have to live, that is why we want to open the lines of communication. If we do not hear from you and your vehicle(s) are noticed on our regular inspection, don’t get upset when you receive a citation. Again, we will only allow parking of recreational vehicles for a short period of 1 to 2 days.

DEED RESTRICTION REMINDER• Cars may not be parked on the front lawn of your property.• Trailers, boats, RVs, recreational vehicles must be stored out of view of the street.• Remember that our streets are very narrow and utilize your driveway to park cars.• Store trash cans out of street view.• Now is the time to start cleaning out gutters and roof tops to get rid of pine needles and leaves.• We urge parents to advise your children to ride scooters and electric toys on the sidewalks, NOT in the streets. There have been too many near misses reported and we don’t want a child to “learn their lesson” the hard way by being hit by a car.

PARKING IN STREETAlthough the streets in Governors Place are public, we are receiving numerous complaints regarding parking of personal vehicles and commercial vehicles in the streets. The parking of COMMERCIAL VEHICLES within the community is RESTRICTED in the governing documents and fi nes will be assessed. Please try to utilize your driveways as much as possible when parking your personal vehicles.

Vice President Theodore Roosevelt succeeded him on September 14, 1901.• The Soviet space probe Luna 2 became the first manmade object to reach the moon as it crashed onto the lunar surface on September 14, 1959.• British Army became the first to use military tanks on September 15, 1916.• Pilgrims sailed from England in the Mayflower on September 16, 1620.• President James A. Garfield died of assassin’s shot on September 19,1881.• Revolutionary War patriot Nathan Hale put to death as a spy by British on September 22, 1776.• President Abraham Lincoln issued preliminary Emancipation Proclamation on September 22, 1862.• “Publick Occurrences,” the first American newspaper, appeared in Boston on September 25, 1690.• Some famous people in history born in September: Marcus Whitman, Jesse James, J. P. Morgan, Jr., Queen Elizabeth I of England, Robert A. Taft, William Sydney Porter (writer O. Henry), Walter Reed, William Howard Taft, John Marshall, F. Scott Fitzgerald, T. S. Eliot, George Gershwin and Samuel Adams.• California was admitted as part of the United States.

GARDEN TIPS FOR SEPTEMBERTime now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots.

• Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. Follow up with a dose of fertilizer the first week of September. • Plants come out of summer rest and go crazy. Insect populations explode as we get into cooler temperatures. Diseases that have been dormant wake up. - Citrus, croton, avocado and mango are susceptible to spider mites and thrips. Discourage them with a strong jet of water from a hose directed to the undersides of the leaves. - Hibiscus, citrus, palms, gardenia and ixora are susceptible to scale and mealybug. • Winter vegetable gardens and perennials get planted.• Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies.• Fire ants baits should be put out in September-October to lessen the number of eggs that make it to Spring. • St. Augustine grass gets its fall fertilizer during September. Continue to mow at maximum height. You want to leave a lot of leaf surface to produce carbohydrate reserves for the winter.• Keep an eye out for sod webworms. First sign of them is grass that appears to stop growing. You need to get them early for biological controls to work. When the caterpillars are only 1/4 inch, Bacillus thuringiensis applications can slow them. Bt is a bacteria that works on the caterpillars’ digestive systems and makes them stop feeding. Do the application late in the day. The larvae feed at night and you want them to get nice fresh Bt.• When the heat and drought end, the weather could bring brown patch disease in the St. Augustine grass. Watch for yellowish spots if the nights drop into the 60’s and days stay in the 80’s.• Get any pruning of hedges and such done now. You want the flush of new growth to be hardened-off before the end of October. Tree pruning should be put off until winter, when the trees are dormant.• Pre-emerge herbicide applications targeting annual bluegrass and the earlier-germinating winter broadleaf weeds needed to be put out starting in mid-August.

The Nutrition and Food Service Department encourages parents in all eligible households to complete an online application prior to the start of school. Visit the district website (www.katyisd.org) for the online application.

A Free and Reduced meal application form and an information letter will also be distributed in the student’s fi rst day packet. A paper application will not need to be completed if you submitted the 2012 - 2013 application online. CRAZY DAYS OF 5TH GRADEWritten by Melissa M. Williams

an Iggy the Iguana Book

Crazy Days of 5th Grade is the 3rd book in the Iggy the Iguana chapter book series for children which focuses on themes of the upper elementary classroom, including making new friends, positive changes in learning styles and respect for others. When Iggy’s new teacher, Mr. Gruff the goat, continues to eat his homework, he realizes his old ways of studying are over. It will take the mind of a creative genius and a lot of make-believe to revitalize Iggy’s concentration in class. What started off as a lonely, boring school year missing his best friend Snap Shell the turtle, turns into a suspenseful ride that includes a strange encounter with a crab and an unexpected trip to the hospital. With the help of his friends and his little sister’s stuffed animals, Iggy discovers a hidden talent proving what he once considered a problem was really a gift in disguise.

KATY REBELS GIRLS BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION

The 8th Grade Katy Rebels-D’Addieco Team took 1st place in the June 30-July 1, 2012 Primetime tournament in Humble, TX. The team went 4-0 to win the tournament in convincing fashion. The zone defense continued to frustrate opponents and the extra effort to complete every hustle play led to opportunities that made the difference in the games. Their continued commitment to defense allowed them to control the pace of the games and deflate opponents early, resulting in large margins of victory against quality teams. Congratulations to Allison, LaShanda, Kim, Sydney, Natalia, Alyssa, Emily, Delaney, Tianna and Anna on another successful tournament!

At age 6, Mikayla earned her first Texas State Champion Title in Creative Form in 2010 (Division-Girls 8y/o and under). At age 7, Mikayla eventually earned 5 Texas State Champion Titles in Traditional Form, Traditional Weapon, Sparring, Creative Form and Creative Weapon in 2011 (Division-Girls 8y/o and under). We are a ladies daytime chorus with approximately 30 members. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 30 years. We sing old favorites and contemporary tunes arranged in the barbershop style. The four parts creating the barbershop sound are Tenor, Lead, Baritone and Bass.

We rehearse Friday mornings from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM at the Treemont Retirement Center located at 2501 Westerland, off Westheimer and Gessner. We love to have visitors and even more when you decide to join our chorus. For additional information, please call Pat at 281-497-4904 or [email protected] (email).

We perform two types of shows each year. Currently we are singing a selection of patriotic songs, Johnny Mathis’ “Chances Are,” Perry Como’s “Hot Diggity Dog” and other fun tunes. You’ll be singing along with us before you know it.

Our Christmas show includes old favorites, but also includes new fun tunes with props, narratives and choreography. We’ll begin preparing that program in October and book performances for the first two weeks in December. Come visit any Friday and see how much fun you can have with us.

CONGREGATION OR AMIGREAT COMEDY NIGHT - ROSS BENNETTAs comedian Allan Sherman once said, “you don’t have to be Jewish”…… to perform comedy at Congregation Or Ami, West Houston’s only conservative Synagogue, but you do have to be funny. On Saturday, October 13th, nationally renowned comedian Ross Bennett, will perform his unique brand of very funny stand-up comedy at the Synagogue, in an authentic comedy club setting, at 8:30 PM. Bennett, a one time West Point Cadet who left the Academy to become a Comedian (“probably the greatest service I will ever do for my country”), has been performing comedy for over 30 years. Over the years, Ross Bennett has appeared at the Friar’s Club and on many TV programs including “Evening at the Improv.” Bennett also co-wrote and stars in the very funny play, PASTRAMI ON RYE WITH MAYO, about the last 4 comedians performing in the Catskills.

The October 13th performance is open to the entire West Houston / Katy community. Please purchase your tickets early, as seating is limited. Congregation Or Ami is located at 3443 Wilcrest Drive Houston, TX 77042. Tickets, which are $36 each, include a wonderful selection of desserts, wine, soda and coffee. Premium seating and group tables are available. For additional information, please check online at www.oramihouston.org or call 713-334-4300.
