Background

J. B. Roy State Ayurvedic Medical College

and Hospital, Kolkata is a heritage Institute of our

Country and is a matter of great proud that Central

Council of Indian Medicine declared the Institute as

the oldest academic institute of Ayurveda. The

institute was formerly known as Jamini Bhushan

Astanga Ayurveda Vidyalaya and Ayurvediya

Arogyashala. There is an annexed campus of the

institute in the name of Patipukur Ayurvedic Hospital,

which was earlier known as Patipukur T.B. Hospital.

The Institute was established on 10th February 1916

with the dream, dedication and devotion of the

founder Kaviraj Jamini Bhusan Roy (01.7.1879 –

11.8.1926) and the foundation Stone was laid down

by the father of nation Mahatma Gandhi.

The Institute is well known for its supremacy in education, research and treatment of

Ayurveda throughout the country. The fame of the Institute reached to its height even in abroad.

The college has already completed its centenary year on 2015. The Institute received all the

privilege of the AYUSH Branch, Dept. of Health & FW, Government of West Bengal to provide

best health care facilities through the Ayurvedic system of Medicine for public interest.

M. Details of clinical material in the hospital The Hospital is well equipped & functioning with 120 sanctioned beds for IPD & OPD of Kayachikitsa, Shalakya Tantra, Shalya Tantra, Streeroga & Prasuti Tantra, Kaumarbhrittya, Swastha Britta & Yoga and Panchakarma including Emergency.

Course conducted

1. Ayurvedacharya Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (B.A.M.S.) of 4 & ½

years course and 1 year compulsory rotatory internship recognized by the CCIM, New

Delhi. The course is affiliated by the WB University of Health Sciences, Kolkata.

2. Panchakarma Assistant course of one year duration at Patipukur Ayurvedic Hospital

affiliated by the Pashchim Banga Ayurveda Parishad.

Admission Criteria

Candidate passed Higher Secondary (HS) examination under recognized Board or

Council with the essential subjects like Physics, Chemistry and Biology are eligible for

admission in both the courses. The candidate for BAMS course should have to be qualified with

NEET followed by counseling and candidates for Panchakarma Assistant course will be admitted

on the basis of the merit list.

Resident Physician and Resident Medical Officer

Dr. Ratan De, MD (Ay), PhD is engaged as Resident Physician at J B Roy State Ayurvedic

Medical College and Hospital and Dr. Sanjib Sinha, BAMS, is engaged as Resident Medical Officer at

Patipukur Ayurvedic Hospital round the clock.

Modern Medical Staff

Besides existing Ayurvedic teaching and Non-teaching personalities, there are engagement of

modern medical staff specialized in Medicine, Pediatrics, Anesthetist, Pathologist, Radiologist,

Gynoecologist and Dental Surgeon. Besides, Teacher cum trainer of Yoga is engaged in the institute.

Apothecary Department

The institute has its own pharmacy which is running under the guidance of experienced

and qualified Ayurvedic personalities. More than 70 types of different categories of medicines

are supplied in OPD and IPD of both hospitals free of cost. The existing teaching pharmacy

controlling persons are –

1. Dr. Nilratan Mahapatra, BAMS, Apothecary In-Charge

2. Dr. Siddhartha Shankar Ghosh, BAMS, MD (Ay), Assistant Apothecary

Junior Doctors

All the passed out students of the institute are engaged as compulsory one year internee in different

department as a part of the studentship with a stipend at per the rules of the Government of West Bengal.

The successful internees are engaged as Junior House Staff with stipend in different departments of both

the hospitals.

Treatment Facilities

A] OPD Sections: Seven OPDs at J B Roy State Ayurvedic Medical College and Hospital,

Kolkata viz. Kayachikitsa, Shalyatantra, Shalakyatantra, Panchakarma, Prasutitantra & Striroga,

Kaumarbhritya and Swasthabritta and two OPDs at Patipukur Ayurvedic Hospital viz.

Kayachikitsa and Panchakrama runs six days in a week. Both the hospitals has Emergency

Department which runs round the clock for 24 hours, seven days in a week.

B] IPD Section : J B Roy State Ayurvedic Medical College and Hospital consisits of

120 beds in indoor system under the departments of Kayachikitsa, Shalyatantra, Shalakyatantra,

Panchakarma, Prasutitantra & Striroga and Kaumarbhrity and two departments Kayacahikitsa

and Panchakarma at Patipukur Ayurvedic Hospital.

Average OPD attendance in both hospital is more than 500 per day and IPD bed occupancy

around 50%. The patient strength in OPD and IPD between 2014-2019 is as follows :

Laboratories

The hospital owes pathological laboratory with sophisticated instruments under the aegis of

modern medicine qualified Pathologist and radiological unit with facilities of digital X-ray and color

Doppler USG under the aegis of radiologist.

Operation Theatre and Labour Room

One major OT, one minor OT and one labour room are existing and about 20 surgical operations

are conducted every month. Modern Anesthetist is engaged for conducting surgical operations.

Panchakarma Therapy Unit

Specialized bio-purification therapy in different modules of Ayurvedic Panchakarma runs in full

swing at both the hospitals for various diseases.

Herbal Garden

The institute has its own herbal garden at Patipukur Ayurvedic Hospital campus with more than

250 varieties of medicinal plants.

Auditorium and Library

There are two well equipped air-conditioned auditorium in the institute with 150 capacity

(Agnibesh Hall) and 30 seats capacity having all facilities of digital media. There is a well equipped

library with approximate 12000 books.

Clinical Research Unit

The institute conduct clinical research in different filed through its own Research Unit.

Sophisticated instruments like ELISA reader, -800C freezer, pH meter, water bath, centrifuge machines,

computers, etc are existing. Research projects are sponsored by CSIR, ICMR, DST (WB), funding

agencies from USA, UK and various parts of country. Collaborations with different research institutes are

made by the faculties.

Pharmacovigilance Centre

The institute has a peripheral Pharmacovigilance centre for conducting studies of ADR on ASU

Drugs approved by the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India. .

Publications and Award

There are more than 100 publications of research articles in different journals of national and

international repute by the faculties of the instate in different departments for last 20 years. Some of the

faculties have also credential for publication of books or chapter of books at national and international

level. Most of the faculties have also exposure as guest speakers in various seminars at home and abroad.

Many of the faculties received award from various academic organizations of home and abroad for their

extra-ordinary activities in academic and research field.

Seminars and Symposium

Organization of seminars and symposium is a regular practice at the institute specially to

commemorate the Foundation Day on 10th February and National Ayurveda Day. Besides, the institute

also organizes conferences individually or in collaboration with other organization from time to time.

Medial Camp

The institute conduct health check up cum Ayurvedic treatment and awareness camps in

different parts of the state engaging faculties, students, junior doctors and other relevant staff.

Free distribution of Ayurvedic medicines are provided by the institute. The follow up treatment

of different patients are done in two hospitals from time to time.

Hostels

One Junior Doctor’s Hostel, one boy’s hostel (Sukanta Chatrabas) and one girl’s

residence (temporary arranged) are existing under the aegis of the institute. A separate Ladies

hostel is under construction at Patipukur Ayurvedic Hospital campus.
