About PoetRobert Lee Frost (March 26, 1874 – January 29, 1963) was an American poet. He is highly regarded for his realistic depictions of rural life and his command of American colloquial speech.[1] His work frequently employed settings from rural life in New England in the early twentieth century, using them to examine complex social and philosophical themes. A popular and often-quoted poet, Frost was honored frequently during his lifetime, receiving four Pulitzer Prizes for Poetry.
The Road Not Taken
By Robert Frost Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,And sorry I could not travel bothAnd be one traveler, long I stoodAnd looked down one as far as I couldTo where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,And having perhaps the better claim,Because it was grassy and wanted wear;Though as for that the passing thereHad worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally layIn leaves no step had trodden black.Oh, I kept the first for another day!Yet knowing how way leads on to way,I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sighSomewhere ages and ages hence:Two roads diverged in a wood, and I -I took the one less traveled by,And that has made all the difference.
Analysis of poem What is the main dilemma in the
poem? The speaker is at a fork in the road – he has to
choose which way to go. The fork in the road is a metaphor for a point
in life when you need to make a choice. A metaphor is a type of comparison in which
one thing is described as if it was something else (example: life is a box of chocolates)
How does the speaker solve his dilemma? He compares the two roads He weighs the pros and cons He tries to foresee the future
Which road does he choose? “the less travelled by “ The more adventurous / the less conventional .
How do you think the speaker feels about his choice ? Last stanza takes place in the future Sigh of relief ? Sigh of regret ? The “what if ??”
Why is the poem called “The Road NOT Taken” and not “The Road Taken” ?
Conclusion ‘The Road Not Taken’ has a deep meaning .It
suggests that a person can not have the best of everything. He himself is responsible for the consequences of the choice that he makes. However, in making the choice , he enjoys full freedom. Once he has made his choice there is no going back.
