UGC Sponsored One- Day State Level Seminar
On
Strategies for Easy English Comprehension:
Sharing Experiences and Shaping Expression
A Report
The Department of English, Government College (Autonomous), Mandya in
association with the Department of Studies in English, University of Mysore
had organized a UGC sponsored one-day state level seminar on “Strategies for
Easy English Comprehension: Sharing Experiences and Shaping Expression”
on 30 March,2013. The objective of the seminar was to attempt a blueprint for
teachers of English to teach English in an easier and efficacious way,
enhancing the ability of rural students to read , write and use English with
reasonable competence.
The seminar was inaugurated by the chief guest Dr.R.Ramachandra, Prof. of
English, Manasagangotri, Mysore. The key- note address of the seminar was
delivered by Dr.Mahadeva, Prof. of English, University of Mysore. In his address
the key-note speaker stressed on the importance of language competence in
English in a globalized world and opined that teachers of English must
incessantly innovate student-centric methods of teaching English. The inaugural
session was presided by Prof.D.Krishnegowda, Principal, Govt. College , Mandya.
The one-day seminar had three technical sessions, followed by a panel
discussion with 53 delegates from across the state participating in the day’s
deliberations. Papers were presented on various texts prescribed in the syllabi
of the college. Paper presenters accentuated the strategies that could be
employed in the teaching and comprehension of these texts in undergraduate
classrooms. A panel discussion in the post-lunch session with erudite teachers
of English as panelists, answered queries from the delegates and suggested
best teaching practices which could be implemented in classrooms to help
rural students from vernacular medium to overcome their diffidence towards
the learning of English.
The valedictory address delivered by Prof. J. Veeregowda, Prof. of English,
marked the culmination of the one-day state level seminar.
