The answer may not come from a world renowned research laboratory but a third grader or a middle school student living next door to you. Or, if you happen to be diabetic some relief may come from an Invention Convention alumni team from Westerville, Ohio. While the rest of Ohio was focused on the Ohio State /Michigan rivalry on a Saturday last fall - in Akron Ohio a room of entrepreneurs, adult inventors, educators and students cheered on the creators of seven inventions as they were in- ducted into the National Gallery for America’s Young Inven- tors. Invention Convention alumni Michael Vawter, Michelle Vawter, and Mark Wright (Westerville, OH) were recognized for their invention NanoMist (Closed-Loop Diabetes Management through Liposome Nanaoencapsulation The team began inventing as part of the Invention Con- vention Program. In 2005 Michael Vawter won the Grand Prize for “Robo Switch”, a computerized energy management system designed to control the energy usage of a home or of- fice. It was his solution for forgetting to turn the lights off in his room. In 2008 sister Michelle and her team partner Mark David Wright won for their invention “The Cold Conqueror” a cure for the common cold. The three young inventors joined forces to create “Nano Mist” after participating in a walk for Diabetes and recogniz- ing some of the issues friends and family with diabetes often face. “Nano Mist” is a patented smartdrug that continuously responds to a diabetic’s glucose level by releasing precise doses of insulin as the body needs it. An accurate closed-loop dia- betes management system that functions from the blood stream itself, the “Nano Mist” eliminates some of the dangers of diabetes, which kills one person every ten seconds. Delivered via a monthly nasal inhalant, the “Nano Mist” is a zero main- tenance replacement for all of a diabetic’s glucose monitoring and insulin delivery equipment. Their design was tested at the Ohio State University’s College of Pharmacy and has received positive feedback from nanotechnology and medical experts. The National Gallery for America's Young Inventors ™ is the only nationally recognized hall of fame for student in- ventors, established in 1993 and given permission by the adult National Inventors Hall of Fame Board in Washington, D.C. to archive and enshrine great student inventions and inventors K-12. Five other inventions and their creators were recognized at the Akron event. If the “future of America is in the hands of our Children and the Teacherswho teach them then our children are in good hands according to the class-rooms of Emily Maginn (Murtha) and Georgie Rosier the 2009 “Teachers ofExcellence” for Central Ohio and Miami Valley. Georgie Rosier teaches sev-enth grade science at Ferguson Middle School in the Beavercreek City SchoolDistrict. She has been teaching for 36 years and when asked about her careercommented, ”I absolutely love every second of what I do!”

Maginn has been teaching for 6 years and is currently teaching an elementaryclass, grades 1-4 combined at Ecole Francaise in Columbus. Each class was awarded a new com-puter, a special day at COSI, a P.T. Reptiles Educational Program and a Donatos Pizza Party forall to enjoy.

The award was created by Just Think Inc., the non-profit organization behind the InventionConvention in an effort to recognize the time and effort that teachers put into teaching their stu-dents through The Invention Convention and similar elective programs.

“We really wanted to give something back to those who have chosen teaching as a profes-sion. We felt like this was an invitation for everyone to show how much they really appreciate allthat teachers do,” says Cherylyn Rushton, Executive Director for The Invention Convention.

The Invention Convention is now accepting entries for The 2010 Teacher of Excellence forthe Central Ohio region (deadline is May 7, 2010) and Cleveland (deadline is April 30, 2010).Entry forms and rules can be downloaded on the Invention convention Web site at Just-Think-Inc.com under Teacher Resources.
