On this your very special day, we give thanks to God for our mothers and all the mothers of our parish community. Many of us were taught to pray by our moms. Thank you. Many of us came and come to know the mystery of God’s love in our lives through the love we have received from our mothers. Thank you. May God continue to shower His love on all the mothers of our parish community. In today’s Gospel, we listen to Jesus’s prayer that He offers to God for his disciples before he makes his final journey to God. Jesus’ prayer captures his deep concern for his beloved ones as he entrusts them to God. Jesus knows his disciples will be left to carry on the work of evangelization and the mission of love. As my mother prayed for her six children before her final journey home to God, she too had a deep concern for her beloved children as she entrusted us all to our loving God. Thank you mom. Her prayer reminds me of the prayer of Jesus in today’s Gospel. May the mothers of our parish community entrust their children to God and consecrate them in truth as Jesus prays for us who are missioned to carry on his mission. CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR FIRST COMMUNICANTS! We as a parish community rejoice and pray for our First Communicants as they receive the Body and Blood of Jesus for the first time. They become more fully joined to our faith community as together we gather to be fed and nourished at the Table of the Lord. We entrust a special blessing to the mothers of our First Communicants. DIOCESAN MISSIONS SUNDAY

NEXT WEEKEND MAY 19 & 20, 2018

The Church is called to proclaim Jesus Christ who was crucified, died and is risen: through him God bestows “new life” that is divine and eternal. This is the “Good News” which changes people and history, and which all people have a right to hear.

We cannot be content when we consider the millions of our brothers and sisters who don’t know Christ and the love of God yet.

“We cannot but speak” (Acts 4:20)

For over fifty years, the Sisters of St. Joseph have labored in Brazil and the Sisters of Mercy in Chile. On next weekend, May 19th & 20th we call upon you to help with your prayers and sacrificial gifts, so that they may continue to bring Christ into a world where darkness, despair and emptiness prevail.

Bishop Salvatore Matano reminds us of our strong and proud mission tradition. The support of our Diocesan Missionaries by the Church of Rochester is a great piece of our history.

May we as partners of Christ help to build God's kingdom by our prayers and financial gifts. Thank you for your support.

FOR PARENTS OF CURRENT KINDERGARTNERS:

Diocese of Rochester sacramental policies require that children be involved in faith formation the year of and the year prior to the year in which the sacrament is received. If you plan to have your child receive First Eucharist (and First Reconciliation) in second grade, then the child should be participating in faith formation in first grade.

Therefore, today’s kindergartners should be registered for a first grade faith formation option for the 20182019 school year. There is a retreat for Wende Correctional Facility prisoners on May 18 20. A team of volunteers, some from this parish, will lead 30 inmates in 3 days of reflection about forgiveness,

renewal and going forth a better Christian. The inmates and volunteers could use your prayers for this retreat.

Prayers of Intercession for Prisoners:Pray for prisoners and their relationship with God, that they would: Allow God to work in them and accomplish His

purpose in their lives Remain strong in their faith and know that if

they ask for forgiveness they will be forgiven Stay away from harmful associations that will

lead them astray

Pray for prisoners’ relationships with others, that they will: Be committed to keeping a strong connection

with their family, despite being separated Experience reconciliation in strained or broken

relationships Have strength and courage to be a friend to the

lonely, the discouraged, the lost

Pray for volunteers who enter the prisons to minister to the inmates that God would: Use their lives to draw many into a saving

relationship and faith in Jesus Christ Let the love of Jesus be shown in their actions

and attitudes. Help them to find the right words when a

prisoner shares a feeling of hopelessness or a doubt that God could ever forgive their particular crime

There is an organization called the Prison Ministry of Upstate New York (PMUNY) that advocates, fundraises and recruits volunteers for the retreats. We need volunteers for the retreats, sew stoles for the inmates and of course pray for our incarcerated brothers and sisters. For more information or to volunteer, please visit: www.pmuny.org

In remembrance of our parishioners who went home to God in March 2018 and had their funeral masses celebrated here at St. Joseph’s …

Mary Catherine Seabry Alexander November 7, 1941 March 1, 2018Mary was a registered nurse and active parishioner of St. Joseph's parish and school. She loved music and singing with her cherished 'folk group' family. She appreciated scripture and enjoyed faith sharing learning and growing in the knowledge of scripture. Mary was able to share her love of the word of God through music. God’s word bonded her with her friends in the adult Folk Group. Brian and Mary married on September 12, 1964. The family moved to Penfield and joined St. Joseph's in 1973. Mary was an original member of the Adult Folk Group. Besides her love of music and fellow members, she became the unofficial secretary of the group with witty and historical (sometimes hysterical) notes. Her "book" is

being passed on for future enjoyment. She was also an original liturgy committee member. Mary enjoyed regular family and folk group gatherings with games, music and good food. Her special contribution was her Texas sheet cake.

Gloria Bodane August 6, 1929March 6, 2018Gloria had been a parishioner since about 2006 12 years, when she moved to Penfield from Fairport. She attended mass weekly as long as she was physically able. Gloria was comforted when clergy visited her the many times she was in the hospital in the last few years. She found her true faith in Catholicism when she converted in her mid30’s. Gloria stayed home when her children were young. She eventually worked for many years and then retired from the Department of the Motor Vehicles as a supervisor. Gloria was a very involved parent and also spent cherished time with her grandchildren. Gloria supported many causes including St. Joseph.

Dorothy Schoen June 27, 1916 March 19, 2018Dorothy was a parishioner at St. Joe’s from 1954 2005 when she moved into an assisted living facility. Family was first in Dorothy’s life. She looked for the good in everyone and was very kind and unselfish. Dorothy was loyal and thought of others first. She was a wife and an administrative assistant. She was a hospital volunteer and a photographer of newborns. On June 27, Dorothy celebrated a milestone event her 101st birthday. Dorothy was a resident of Hill Haven for about 4 years and was wellloved by everyone she met. She exuded a sense of a grace and charm which may be the result of her modeling career with the B. Forman Co. many years ago. Most of all, Dorothy had a kind and gentle spirit and a

thoughtful word for everyone.

We also remember family and friends of parishioners…
