Introduction

I t is with much pleasure that I present this exhibition of the work of Kenny McKendry, a painter from Northern Ireland exhibiting in the Republic for the first time.

Kenny studied at the University of Ulster and later at the University of Brighton, graduating with a degree in illustration. He worked for many years with one of the UK’s oldest and respected illustrators agents ‘Artists’s Partners’ and the discipline and skill honed there is reflected in his painting technique today.

Living now in County Antrim he exhibits regularly at the Royal Ulster Academy and has recently been nominated as the ‘Painter of the Month’ by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland.

Although his paintings are generally modest in scale they are freely painted with much style and bravura. Like Paul Kelly, he prefers to paint on panel rather than canvas where he can exploit the buttery medium of oil paint on a rigid surface displaying every brushstroke and nuance exactly as the brush delivers.

He possesses a strong sense of colour yet his landscapes are lyrical and sensitive. His portraits are informal portrayals of his sitters which in this exhibition include family and friends, fellow painters, musicians, a poet, a photographer and a lighthouse keeper.

A measure of Kenny’s modesty is his preference of being described as a painter rather than an artist—a description which he says must be earned, and by the few.

I would like to thank Elaine Somers whose keen eye identified Kenny as a painter of quality, exceptional I believe, and it was through her that I first encountered his work.

Finally, I hope you enjoy this exhibition as much as I have in its preparation.
