    PRINCIPLES OF TRAINING

Training includes teaching, coaching, critiquing and mentoring. Most

trainers perform all (or at least some) of these tasks.

Training can be handled as an event sponsored by a unit, district, or

council, and often involves training teams with several members.

Training can be handled as a one-on-one activity or as self-

    instruction, depending upon particular circumstances.

Not everyone is cut-out to be a trainer. A good trainer has specific

skills and qualities that distinguish them from others.

As trainers one should all be committed to continuous improvement.

    PERSONAL SUPPORT

What is an obvious qualification for a good trainer? The ability to do a job/task well, and superior technical knowledge or skills.

    Is technical expertise enough?

Although knowledge and experience provide an edge, it alone does not

make you a good trainer. The ability to communicate effectively, and a

willingness to constantly improve are more important.

How can leaders/trainers grow and improve?

Personal support outside formal training courses is one way of buildingself-confidence and establishing relationships. Basically this comes in the

form of helping friends and seeking advice from others.

    PERSONAL SUPPORT?

    When they need more information.

When the have difficulty interpreting information.

When they are undecided or confused.

When they need to put their Scouting role in perspective.

    When they need encouragement.

When they need recognition (a pat on the back).

    PERSONAL SUPPORT - KEY POINTS

Be sure you understand the type of support being asked for.

Personal Support and Practical Support are different:

Personal Supporthelps to build confidence and deals with

human relationships. Deals with Emotional issues.

Practical Supportprovides assistance with materials, equipment, or specific skills. Deals with Physical issues.

There are no standard answers to personal support issues because

no two leaders are exactly alike.

It is important to encourage frank discussion and free exchange of

concerns, as described in the Supportive Environment hand-out.
