Ant-ManStarring Paul Rudd, MichaelDouglas, Evangeline Lilly, PatrickWilson, Corey Stoll, BobbyCannavale, Wood Harris, T.I. Directed by Peyton ReedDisney/Marvel

As pop culture expert Jimi LaLumiaastutely pointed out in his “RhythmTracking” column in our last issue, thefirst two film adaptations of Marvel'sAvengers blatantly left out a pair of members that were vital in the originalcomic books: Ant-Man and Wasp Woman. How many of veteran geeks and nerdsrealize that the original Ant-Man couldalso be Giant Man, as Hank Pym, the brilliant scientist who could grow orshrink to just about any size he chose, fought against injustice both on his ownas as a member of the group that originally alsoincluded The Hulk, Iron Man, and Thor; CaptainAmerica joined quickly thereafter, as did others… and now there have seemingly been moreAvengers than the tallied population of RhodeIsland on any given Thursday.

(A quick note: There are many movies and TVshows based on Marvel characters available now,but none are more entertaining than the originalStan Lee / Jack KirbyAvengers comic bookissues from the early 1960s. Long out of print,

naturally, these comic books have been reissuedin both hardbound and paperback books as wellas e-books for Kindle readers; log on toAmazon.com and look for the “MarvelMasterworks” series in the book department foryour first taste – or perhaps, some quite worthynostalgia – of some of the finest comic books inhistory.)

Have we proven that we're full-fledged nerdsyet? Of course, most film adaptations of books, even comic books, take liberties with things such

as origins and attire (we still aren't sure ifthe Hulk is Bruce Banner or David Banner, but nobody seems to care about such trifles – audiences just want their BAM!POW! CRASH!). Here we have film legendMichael Douglas portraying the aging yeteternally noble Dr. Hank Pym, who enlistsa big-time cat burglar, Scott Lang (wemust note this: a woefuly miscast PaulRudd; it’s like using Paul Giamatti asHercules), to become his partner in helping to “save the world.” How? Itseems Pym was the original Ant-Man andinventor, according to this new mash-up ofan old character; a former compadre ofPym’s, Cross (Stoll), is about to reveal themagical shrinking suit to the world andsell it off – but this crazy world doesn’tneed to know about all this, so Pym andhis daughter (the ever-ravishing Lilly)need to stop Cross at all costs. Pym usesLang as his new human Shrinky Dink, andlet the fun and action begin.

No doubt about it: “Fun” is the operativeword here; director Peyton Reed seems to be ahuge fan of the old-time comics, and this film, above all the others, keeps the wry spirit andthrill-a-minute action of those long agoLee/Kirby issues alive. What a suprise – this is miles better than the second Avengersfilm, and one of the best comic book adaptationsto date. Not bad for a “forgotten” Marvel character. We hope Mr. LaLumia is pleased, because we certainly are.

On Long Island, there almost isa pizza parlor on every corner.Sometimes within a 6 blockradius, there can be 4-5 pizzaplaces, one in each strip shoppingcenter. How do they all sur-vive.?..WE LOVE OUR PIZZA!

We've been through it all...regu-lar pizza, white pizza, gourmetpizza...each one a variation on thebasic version, so it's of particularinterest when we find somethingthat just stands out from thecrowd.....Pie Craft in Island Park isjust such a place, perhaps at theforefront of a new w ave of pizzaextremes...the variations arealmost endless, and YOU, thepizza lover, makes the decisions.

At Pie Craft, it's kind of a DIYenvironment. Tucked inside aKing Kullen shopping center rightbefore the huge clubs of Barnum

Island, Pie Craftoffers great selections.

First youchoose yourdough, whichcan be the origi-nal pizza dough,

the rosemary & sun dried tomato& herb dough, and the spicy fire-cracker, which was our personalfavorite, although not really thatspicy so the average hot saucelover will be satisfied. Then, youadd your base which can includepesto green, traditional red, orpink pizza with vodka creamsauce with shredded mozzarella, our favorite.

What would pizza be withouttoppings? Pie Craft offers greatselections including caramelizedonions, shrimp, gorgonzolacheese, bacon, grilled chicken,Parma prosciutto, and more. Thewhole process only takes 3 min-utes to cook, less than some placestake for a slice, and the speed isdue to the fact that the pies arecooked in Italian made woodburning ovens.

How much is this going to setyou back? Would you believeunder $10 for the basic pie plus 3-4 toppings...and I'm talking agood sized pie.

Pie Craft also has artisan meat-balls...especially good were thebuffalo chicken and chicken parmversions....

This is not your ordinarypizza place though...PieCraft has a tap wine bar, acraft beer bar with 8 rotat-ing selections, plus glutenfree hard cider on tap.

Someone in your groupinto super healthy food? PieCraft offers up herbal teas andhealth drinks, Quinoa bowls,

brussel sprouts, kale and charred artichokes.

For dessert you can go for a traditional ice cream fix, or try theDessert Bowl featuring frozenacai, banana and berries coldblended into a smooth ice.

They also offer entertainmentincluding acoustic acts on the

upper level and djs on Thursdays, first show July 30 with Schwaygardjaying. Free to come, and all agesand families particularly welcome.

Pie Craft is located at 4585Austin Blvd, Island Park..Phone516-690-8800...say hi to Tommy, one of the owners of Minnesotasin Long Beach, one of the madgeniuses behind this great pizzaadventure.

Deep dish lovers beware, thincrust rules here!– Rich Branciforte

Page 6: Good Times 1176

“If anyone had told us that we would be five gamesover .500 at the All-Star Game, we would havegladly signed up for that,” New York Mets outfielder Michael Cuddyer told the media following his team’s 5-3 victory over the ArizonaDiamondbacks that capped off a three-game sweepat home just before the All-Star Game break.Cuddyer was speaking from the viewpoint of Metsplayers, but he could just as well have been speaking on behalf of their fans; given the enor-mous number of players lost to injuries

(particularly to team captain and third basemanDavid Wright who has missed nearly the entire season with back issues, and to catcher Travisd’Arnaud, who seems to have the misfortune ofinjuring a different part of his body every fewgames) that led to a painful shortage of offense fora good chunk of the 2015 campaign, it’s hard toquibble with his assessment.

In spite of their better-than-expected record,Mets fans have a right to be skeptical in light ofrecent post-All-Star Game collapses. To use invest-ment lingo, if the Mets were a stock, you wouldhave made a fortune short-selling them after theAll-Star Game the last few years. Will historyrepeat itself? Mets fans can take comfort knowingthat both the starting and relief pitching is muchbetter now than any other time in recent memory. The law of averages is on the Mets’ side when itcomes to staying healthy from here on out. Finally, they’re done with trips to the west coastfor this season, traditionally their Waterloo.Ironically, the Mets finished with a respectable 4-2 record against the San Francisco Giants andLos Angeles Dodgers during their California trip.On the other hand, the Mets still have to play theColorado Rockies in Denver; the high altitude hasnever agreed with them, based on game results.Troubling still is that the Mets have shown toomuch reliance on home runs and not enough onmanufacturing runs based on moving menaround the bases through steals, hit and runplays, bunts, and productive outs. Mets pitcherMatt Harvey garnered attention two weeks agowhen he hit his first major league home run thaterased a one-run deficit. That’s all fine and dandy, but what’s more important for Harvey and the

other starters (who, in fairness, aren’t bad hitters forpitchers) is the ability to lay down bunts to advancerunners. They are woefuly deficient in that area.

Mets manager Terry Collins admitted that he isconcerned with Harvey’s propensity to throw a lotof pitches early in games. Harvey appears to haverecovered nicely from Tommy John surgery, butMets management is understandably nervous aboutovertaxing his arm this year.

Mets fans lustily booed Arizona Diamondbacks’relief pitcher and former Met Oliver Perez every

time that he was summoned into a game during therecently series between the two teams. Perez’s wildness and inability to win in a Mets uniformdrove fans crazy. No problem with fans booing, butI was discouraged by the complete lack of appreciation for Whitestone native Mike Baxter twoweeks ago when he returned to Citi Field as amember of the Cubs. The outfielder was the manmost responsible for saving Johan Santana’s no-hitter three years ago by crashing into a wall tohaul in Yadier Molina’s long drive. Relief pitcher

Bobby Parnell noticed the disparity of reactions toformer players as well: “Fans always remember thebad stuff and rarely the good when it comes tomost former players,” said the bearded right-hander.

It’s easy to laugh at the number of sportswriterstrying to make hay about the fact that AlexRodriguez was not named to the American LeagueAll-Star team in spite of the fine season he is enjoying. The line of reasoning goes like this: Since“A-Rod” cheated by using steroids in the past thenthis is the price he has to pay. Sorry to disappointall the puritanical moralists out there, but the fact isthat there was not enough open real estate on the25-man roster to accommodate Rodriguez. Everyteam has to have at least one player on a league All-Star roster, and the Yankees had already the moredeserving Mark Teixeira, Brett Gardner, and DellinBetances on the 2015 American League team.

Say what you will about “A-Rod,” but you can’tquestion his dedication to philanthropy. Heresolved a disputed bonus clause with the Yankeesby agreeing to have the “Bronx Bombers” give millions to charities instead of to himself. Likewise,Rodriguez was able to convince Zack Hampel, theman who caught Rodriguez’ home run 3,000th hit,to return the ball to him in exchange for a $150,000donation to a charity of Hampel’s choosing.

It was a nice touch on the part of the Yankees toplay the classic song “It Don’t Come Easy” betweeninnings in honor of Ringo Starr’s 75th birthday earlier in the month.

It’s hard to believe that 32 years have passedsince George Brett of the Kansas City Royals hit ahome run that appeared to beat the Yankees butwas initially ruled out because his bat had too

much pine tar on it. That decision was eventuallyoverturned, and the last four outs of the game hadto be replayed. Witty New York Daily News colum-nist Filip Bondy has written the definitive book theincident, The Pine Tar Game (Scribner), now instores. The book is far more than just a treatiseabout what could arguably be termed baseball’sfirst replay that overturned an umpire’s decision.Bondy spends most of the time talking about theonce-fierce rivalry between the Royals and Yankees.Bondy also has fun reminiscing about the mostintriguing sports owner ever, George Steinbrenner.A Royals marketing executive back in the 1980snamed Rush Limbaugh gets some ink here as well.

Brooklyn Nets general manager Billy King surprised nearly everyone by buying out the con-tract of disappointing point guard Deron Williams, who never really played like a franchise player forthe team in spite of his NBA maximum contract. The fact thathis releasetriggered afairly mutedreaction is atestament thathe never con-nected withfans here ...and the sadderfact that, inreality, theredon’t seem tobe a lot of passionateBrooklyn Nets fans.

But who could ever guess this agless, goofy guy would be bigger than ever thesedays? “Weird Al” released Mandatory Funlast summer; the album features parodies ofsome of the biggest hits of recent vintage, including Pharrell Williams’ “Happy”(“Tacky”), Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines”(“Word Crimes”), Lorde’s “Royals” (“Foil”),

Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy” (“Handy”) andImagine Dragons’ “Radioactive” (“Inactive”).This is truly amazing: Mandatory Fundebuted at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 albumchart. This marked the first time that a comedy album has debuted at #1 on thechart in history, and the first time that a comedy album has reached the top of thechart in over 50 years (the last one beingAllan Sherman’s 1963 release My Son, TheNut). It was also Al’s personal best salesweek ever, as well as the largest sales weekfor any comedy album since 1994. On Spotify,Yankovic set the U.S. record for having the

most tracks from one album inthe viral top 10 at one time, taking the first four spots. Inaddition, “Word Crimes”debuted in the Billboard Top 40, making Al one of onlythree people to have had Top 40singles in each of the last fourdecades (the other two areMichael Jackson and Madonna).

In addition to his recordingsand world-famous music videos,Yankovic is also well-known forhis cult-hit feature film UHF(1989), his late ‘90s CBSSaturday morning series “TheWeird Al Show” and the numerous “AL-TV” specials thathe’s made for MTV and VH1over the years. His 2006 albumStraight Outta Lynwoodspawned the Billboard Top 10

single “White & Nerdy,” the video for whichspent two months at #1 on iTunes and garnered more than 150 million hits on theInternet.

Since then, he released his greatest hitspackage The Essential “Weird Al” Yankovic(Legacy), wrote, starred in and directed thethemed attraction “Al’s Brain: A 3-D JourneyThrough The Human Brain,” and attractedseveral million followers on social media. With the release of his children’s book WhenI Grow Up (HarperCollins, 2011), Al becamethe author of a New York Times bestseller.

Oates On The Road: Rock andRoll Hall of Famer John Oates hasdeveloped a new travel/roots musictelevision program, “Good Road ToFollow.” Adapting the title from a recent solo album release, Oates’concept is to explore America’s back

roads in search of unique characters, towns, local food, and Americanroots music. When Oates first teamed up with Daryl Hall to formthe pop music duo Hall & Oates, they traveled from gig to gig along America's back roads in a 1968 Pontiac GTO that they bought from John's father. In his new show, Oates hits the road onceagain – only this time, viewers can come along for theride.

“Two things that havereally defined my life overthe years are the road androots music,” said Oates.“So this is my chance tocombine those two forcesinto a show that will allowviewers to come alongwith me on a unique journey.”

On the series, Oatesserves as a guide alonghidden and often forgottenroads, uncovering parts ofthe country rarely if everseen on national television.Oates will also uncovermusic never heard outsideof the isolated hollows andback roads of America“roots” music, which hasbecome the basis for nearlyevery American musicgenre heard today. At theend of each episode, Oates

will team up with the originators ofthat music to arrange and play thosesongs. The songs will be recordedand available for download at theend of each show.

On June 30, the indie folk trio Dispatch stopped in at The Space at Westburyfor an intimate show for Pandora listeners; it was yet another “pop-up con-cert” for those lucky enough to be invited to attend.

Fans hailing from all over Long Island lined up around the block of thevenue for this free event. Upon entering, fans were greeted with a free hat andwrist band; a photo booth and bar were located directly across the entrance;just past them was the main stage, where two Lexus sedans (advertisting tie-in) were parked on display. Nice touches, but the unique music of Dispatchwas the reason for the excitement among the patrons.

Dispatch opened with “BangBang” and “Here We Go,” whichwere greeted warmly. “TwoCoins,” “Flag,” and “Carry You”moved many in the crowd todance or “jam out” with the band. The vibe of the audience wassuper friendly (which reflects theattitude and presence Dispatchgave back), and here’s proof: As aphotographer timidly made hisway to the crowd for what wouldusually be an uphill battle, a clear

path was given to him as people patted him on the back, encouraging him toget as close as possible; one sweat-covered concertgoer even offered to put thelens jockey on his shoulders.

A false start to “Flying Horses,” made the crowd laugh; the band began thesong over. “Lightning” and “Bound” had fans dancing again before the lastsong of the set, “Elias.” As Dispatch made their way back to the stage, leadvocalist Brad Corrigan began to hammer away on acoustic guitar for theencore, “Outloud.” Pete Heimbold jammed out on the tambourine while ChadUrmston stayed steady on the bongos. Although a big hit in “The General”was not played, Dispatch delivered a solid performance on all fronts.– Christopher Jon

If you follow the hottest stars in today’s hip hop scene, the name ActionBronson should familiar – but if it isn’t, take a listen to his latest album, Mr.Wonderful, and sit back for a journey on a lyrical roller coaster. The Flushingrapper stopped at The Paramount as part of his 2015 world tour, and there wassomething in the air hinting it would be a special night – of course, that couldof been due to the fact that there was actually something else in the air… andnot just from the fans.

Action Bronson may arguably be thegenre’s biggest new star, with his raw, gritty, old school style rooting back to thestreets of Queens. The former online cook-turned rapper stepped on the stage andimmediately turned heads with his skillsand appearance; sporting no more thanNBA shorts, a black T-shirt, and somethingburning from his mouth, Bronson stompedhis way to the stage to deliver “Silverado.”Followed by newer songs “Brand NewCar,” “The Rising,” and “Acting Crazy,”Bronson was here to make a mark amonghis home fans. When he finished “100MPH,” he made his way to the top of TheParamount’s VIP section and performed“Strictly For My Jeeps” with one leg overthe rail while the crowd below went nuts. More fun: Bronson threw huge bags filled with merchandise off the stage, causing a frenzy among the fans. Bronson ended with “Easy Rider,” and as thecrowd chanted his name to return to the stage, he encored with“Contemporary Man.”

After what was clearly a jam-packed performance, Action Bronson thankedhis fans and left the stage. Heading to the exits, the crowd spread across thefloor, searching for leftover gear that may have been missed. No such luck, butBronson didn’t miss a mark on this wild night. – Christopher Jon

One of Long Island’s all-timefavorite groups brought its “Sound Of Thunder” tour – in thiscase, a concert honoring the memory of drummer A.J. Pero – toSayerville, New Jersey. With front-man Dee Snider reminding one ofa cross between Roger Daltrey andPhyllis Diller but with serious abs,Twisted Sister is still quite a site tobehold. The band went from thebars to the stars, and even foundthe always-in-the-news Snider testifying before the United StatesSenate back in 1985 along withJohn Denver and Frank Zappa.Exalted by MTV into America's consciousness, the group followedin the footsteps of Alice Cooperand The New York Dolls. Theyhad less makeup than Kiss, but farmore balls than your averageLong Island bar band.

Anthony Jude “A.J.” Pero was55 when he died on March 20 of aheart attack. A.J. was reportedlytraveling on the tour bus of theband Adrenaline Mob on theirway to a show; the drummer wasrushed to a hospital in upstate

Poughkeepsie, but could not berevived. Pero would often come todine with the roadies, and heloved to mingle with his fans.Guitarist Jay Jay French was quoted: “The nice one died.” Peroloved the vocation he had chosen, and the people that surroundedhim. It seems fitting that hepassed on his way to rock, withthe wheels of a tour bus rollingalong.

On this night, Twisted Sisterperformed an 18-song set, openingwith “What You Don't Know (Sure

Can HurtYou).” Thedrum kit washandled studiously byMike Portnoy, formally ofDream TheaterandAdrenaline

Mob. The band did not skip abeat, with highlights including“Stay Hungry,” “The Beast,” “YouCan't Stop Rock ‘N Roll,” “I Am(I'm Me),” and the band's signa-ture tunes “We're Not Gonna TakeIt” and “I Wanna Rock.” Portnoyplayed a memorial solo withPero’s image on a big screen while the audience chanted Pero’sname, and reacted with visceral

emotion. While the drummer'slife was being celebrated, also was the band's history, whichstarted in 1972; the theme of theset list seemed to be aimed atdefying Father Time, who theaging rockers have realized is areal mother.

Both a CD and DVD are set tobe released of these memorialshows. The first of the concertswas in Las Vegas on May 30 atThe Joint Hard Rock Hotel, withSkid Row also on the bill. The current line-up of Twisted Sisteralso includes Eddie “Fingers”Ojeda (lead and rhythm guitar),Mark “The Animal” Mendoza(bass); this lineup surely mustrank among the longest-lasting inthe rock world.

Twisted Sister will hit a fewdates around Europe and return tothe USA; their last scheduledshow is September 12 at TheGrand Casino for The GrandRocktember Music Festival III.According to reports, next yearwill bring the band’s final tour. – Bob Wilson

If you’ve never ventured out for anevening of live theater in Long Island, youmay not know what to expect. Untilrecently, you could include us in thatgroup as well; what follows is the first inplanned series of reviews showcasing thebest in area theater companies and productions. Trust us: Area theater can beas enjoyable as Broadway.

Among the mostfamous stage comediesever (and later film; even later, three different television series)is The Odd Couple, considered by many criticsto be Neil Simon's funniestplay. The exploits of messyOscar Madison and tidyfussbudget Felix Ungerhave proven to be timeless. In 1984, Simon revived theshow with a female cast;Sally Struthers and RitaMoreno got the originalBroadway assignment in ashow that wasn't quite thesmash the male version was, but ran forclose to a year with good notices. Amongthe changes: instead of Felix and Oscar,it's Florence and Olive; the Pigeon sisters have morphed into the Costazuelabrothers; instead of poker, the show openswith four female friends playing a spiritedgame of Trivial Pursuit.

For this production, it was during thatboard game when the audience met the

perfectly cast Cathy Chimenti as Olive, who brought knowing authenticity to arole that some actresses might not beinclined to perform. Chimenti's Olivemanaged to be sloppy and wry yet warm-hearted and kind at the same time,a truly fine and funny performance. CarolCarota, while not as naturally funny, tookon the challenging role of Florence; lesser

talents might have portrayed Florance asstrident or simple-minded, yet Carota'snuanced acting gave therole the right touch ofcomic neurosis mixedwith genuine pathos –particularly during heropening scene whereshe's distraught over herbroken marriage.

Buoyed by a solidsupporting cast (MichaelChimenti and GaryTifield as the brothersbrought laughs from themoment they appeared

on the stage), this simple production wasjust the tonic for a warm spring night. Itwasn't total perfection (confusingly, thehouse lights stayed on during the first actof the opening night performance;Simon's update of the show referencedboth e-mail and Chubby Checker, whichdoesn't work), but it's impossible not toenjoy prime Neil Simon in the hands ofgifted performers. – Bob Smith

Long Island's D'Addario & Company andSuhr Guitars are both American-made musicindustry leaders, committed to designing, manufacturing and distributing exceptionalstrings and instruments. In March 2014, thetwo companies formed a unique partnership

when Suhr Guitars secretly switched thestrings on their production floor toD'Addario's new NYXL model, the strongeststring the company has ever made. Suhr'squality control staff noticed an immediatechange: strings reached pitch stability faster, stayed in tune longer, and breaks became athing of the past.

D'Addario also kicked off its Play FearlesslyProject last year, a social initiative showcasingNYXL, with the donation of one Suhr Classic T

Antique guitar that was then outfitted withNYXL strings and took a tour of the USA. Thisproject resulted in the "longest lick everplayed" featuring both amateur and profes-sional musicians (Keith Urban, Blake Mills,Vernon Reid, and more), experiencing NYXL

strings; hheck it out atplayfearlessly.com.

Since the secret switch last year, Suhrnow strings their entire line of electricguitars with NYXLs. Each guitar alsocomes with D'Addario's new NYXLLuthier Booklet, which tells the story ofthis partnership.

"Suhr Guitars is the perfect partner forD'Addario's NYXL strings," said thecompany's U.S. sales manager, PeterD'Addario. "These guys are makingsome incredible instruments. Like us,they are passionate about building the

best tools for guitarists in the world."Joshua Smith of Suhr added: "D'Addario

and Suhr share the philosophy that combiningthe finest components with innovative produc-tion techniques produces an exceptional prod-uct of the highest quality. In 2014, when theyasked us to put a ‘top secret’ string to the test,we found NYXLs to have a quicker break-inperiod, more upper midrange punch, improved tuning stability and bend furtherwith less breakage."

D'Addario also recently announced the addition of nine new sets to their strongestguitar string line ever, the NYXL. On May 15,

this addition made a total of 15 NYXL sets available, now including 12-60, 12-54, 13-56,12-52, 11-56, 11-52, 9.5-44 and Balanced Tension9-40 and 10-46.

Envisioned, perfected, and manufacturedby D'Addario in Long Island, this newly engineered, break-resistant, high-carbon steelcore and plain steel alloy delivers a whole newlevel of freedom, confidence, and power.NYXL's provide more strength and tuning stability. Learn more at daddario.com.

Who: One of the finest jazz musicians iin the area, the charismatic Shenole Latimer, has made an indelible mark in the area music scene. In addition to appearing in everytop jazz venue in the region, his 2006 album Front & Center represented a high-watermark in area jazz recordings. He’s just about done it all ... but Latimer recentlyannounced he’s leaving Long Island. What follows is his up-to-date story, providedexclusively to Good Times:

From Shenole Latimer: “It was the summer of 1995. The room was dark and I wasscared out of my mind. I took a deep breath and slowly opened my eyes. Nervously, Igazed at what was occurring in front of me. The scene was surreal and everythingwas moving in slow motion. I could see about 70 people, in various stages of drunk-enness, who were ready to rock & roll. Suddenly, I heard the clicking of two drum-sticks striking each other in a count-off. After the fourth click, my left pinky andthumb struck two ‘C’ keys that were an octave apart from each other on the lowerregister of my keyboard, and that was the instant that I not only played the song‘Jump’ by Van Halen for the firsttime in front of a paying public, but that I also launched myself intoa 20-year journey into the LongIsland music scene and beyond.

“My musical rollercoaster beganas a keyboardist, twisted intofusion, bumped me into becominga jazz saxophonist, thrusted meinto a period as the EducationDirector for East End Arts (the artscouncil based in Riverhead), andglided me into what I refer to asthe musical omniverse. Over theyears, I have experienced perform-ing in venues ranging from a barnto the 50-yard line of GiantsStadium for a corporate conven-tion. There have been gigs in front of only one listener and gigs in front of an audi-ence of thousands. I have performed in 39 of the lower 48 states via self-bookedtours, and met untold numbers of wonderful people and incredible musicians. I havewon awards, gained endorsements and corporate sponsors, and have been blessed tohave not only recorded with talented artists on their albums, but have also managedto record one of my own. That album, Front And Center, and can be downloaded oniTunes.

“All of these experiences and accomplishments would not have been made possiblehad it not been for three things; the first vital ingredient was a support system ... mymother. She passed away in April 2014, but she did everything she could to supportmy interests. I would advise any artist to find or create some kind of support systemaround themselves. I learned, painfully so, that one person can never do absolutelyeverything. Some of us are fortunate enough to have family members who are supportive. Other artists may need to turn to friends or their fans, but having a support system is something I cannot stress enough.

“A second component was my hunger to work hard in my quest to succeed. I’mcertain that any artists reading this article can relate to the need to be focused, workhard, and stay motivated. Remember to find ways to work smarter, not harder. Thatisn’t a ‘politically correct’ way of telling you to be lazy – it refers to finding creativeways to solve problems efficiently within the mindset of being a self-employed artist.

“The third factor is Long Island. When I was a younger man, I hated the LongIsland scene. I cursed what many musicians, myself included, called the ‘GreatCultural Wasteland.’ But I gradually came to the realization that Long Island hasmany resources, such as art councils, venues, media outlets, and most importantlypeople who are starved for entertainment that can help them forget about the tediumof their daily 9 to 5. I gradually formulated the opinion that the success of any artistdepends more on his or her ability to effectively utilize and maximize whateveropportunities exist, whether it is here on Long Island or anywhere else.

“For my entire life, I have been a resident of Long Island. But now, it is time for me to continue my musical rollercoaster ride into a new location: Within the next week or two, I will move to Florida. The reasons for my move are many, and frankly irrelevant to the greater point: We as artists, as musicians, and as human beings, must resolve ourselves to work hard, be smart, plan, take advantage of whatever our region has to offer, and surround ourselves with the right people in order to propel ourselves to our goals.

“I am supremely grateful to all of the people who either directly or indirectlyimpacted my music and personal life in a positive fashion, I am thankful to have been able to play music full-time for most of my adult life, and I am trulyblessed to have had so many incredible fans over the years here on Long Island.Thank you all for everything! I invite you to keep up with my future endeavors byjoining my email list at shenole.com. If you are on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube orInstagram, just do a search on my name and drop me a quick hello or ask me questions about the music scene. I am always happy to share whatever I have learnedfrom this musician’s life!”22 • Good Times Magazine - July 28 - August 10, 2015

Amy Always: Music films andfilms based on rock or pop are frequently hard sells. Film studios arealways paralyzed with fear that it's a“music movie.” There are battles onhow to present it: Should it be gearedto hardcore fans, and then try tospread it to the general public, or tryto snare the public first and hope thefans are just happy that a film was

made about their favorite artist? The excellent Looking For Johnny,

an exciting rock & roll movie, didn'tmake its way into as many theaters asit should have. The fear was thatmany people didn't know whoThunders was – but that defeats thepoint of it being a great movie thatwould have flown on word of mouthand a brilliant soundtrack album. Istill find it astounding that this moviehasn't made its way onto VH1 Classicor one of the pay cable film channels. For that matter, an Andy Summersfilm – a documentary covering ThePolice, who were kind of popular inthe 80s – was impossible to findanywhere; the same was true forthe Stamp/Lambert film we covered here about the two guyswho got The Who off the ground.

I thereby am so happy thatAmy Winehouse, who had one bighit in America, "Rehab," is the subject of a film, Amy, about hershort but powerful life in and outof the music business. The film ismaking good money in the U.K.and in America, and it really didn'tcost all that much to make, so perhaps it will reignite interest inthis type of production.

If you haven't seen Amy yet, by all means get to the theater now (but make sure that you see Ant-Man first!).

Still Smokey: I must mentionSmokey Robinson's appearance onthe recent BET Awards, where hereceived a long overdue "lifetime"award. He sang and spoke, and his

voice and performance were asimpeccable as ever. The speech hedelivered should become requiredreading for the new breed of stars; itwas an almost harsh lecture on“becoming full of yourself," "haughty and self-absorbed.” I thought everything about his time on stage was stunning, well executed, and well deserved. I

believe that, to this day, that Robinson still doesnot get the same respectthat eventually was givento his fellow Motownlabelmates Stevie Wonderand Marvin Gaye.Perhaps he didn't deliverany of the socially relevant material that they both did, but it doesn't make him any less important or iconicthan those two. TheBeatles loved Robinsonand covered his songs inthe early days; Bob Dylancalled him America's

greatest living poet. I agree withLennon, McCartney, and Dylan –Smokey is a natural resource and anational treasure.

Bad Girls: It seems some currentpop stars want to be like rock starsused to be. Iggy Azalea and ArianaGrande have put their respective feetinto their mouths, affecting sales andairplay and giving their record labelsnervous breakdowns. Ariana wascaught on video saying that she hatesAmerica and Americans; we all actout and say stupid things when we'reyoung – right, "Bigger than Jesus"John Lennon or "Hanoi" Jane Fonda?

The list is actually endless if wereally want to go there, but one thinghas changed since John and Janescrewed up: The Internet and socialmedia capture everything these days, and transmits everything worldwideinstantly. Think before you speak, children. I like Grande as a pop artist, but she needs to put a lid on it.
