LIs Craft Breweries: Incredible Beers For All

In the vast and expansive world of brewingbeer, craft is king these days. There may beno place in the country where that is moreevident than Long Island, where beer enthusiasts can support more than 20 localbreweries (and counting). Some of the

biggest names in Long Island craft brewing Blue Point Brewing Company; Great South BayBrewery are finding their way into national dis-tribution, while others remain local L.I. stalwarts.

As any craft drinker should know by now, theannual Spring Craft Beer Festival is making itsreturn to Nassau Coliseum on Saturday, March22 for its eighth consecutive year. This spring festival will again host more than 50 breweriesserving more than 100 beers. As always, visitorscan expect a wide array of giveaways and mer-chandise. New this year: Shipyard BrewingCompany of Portland, Maine will sponsor aSilent Disco, a surreal party experience where themusic is pumped through distributed wirelessheadphones. See more at details at springcraft-beerfestival.com, or call (631) 940-7290.

For this first edition of our Guide to LongIsland Breweries, Good Times caught up with the

owners and brewmasters of some of the Islandslargest and most popular beer makers. ChristianRyan, Head Brewer of Blue Point BrewingCompany, shared exciting news regarding BluePoints 2012 small-batch brew, Entitlement Porter. This American porter, which was brewed as asatirical salute to the nations political processduring the 2012 election season, will make itsreturn to the tasting room early this year, alongwith a couple of new small batches.

When asked about plans for St. Patricks Day,Ryan boldly stated, Pretty much every holidayis a cause to celebrate here. Expect to see BluePoint Brewing Company at this years SpringCraft Beer Festival, where you can taste theirflagship Toasted Lager as well as Ryans personalfavorite, Rastafar Rye. For more information, visit bluepointbrewing.com, or call (631) 475-6944.

Greg Maisch, Great South Bay Brewerys headbrewer, excitedly told us of some of their forth-coming plans. In addition to participating in theSpring Craft Beer Festival, the GSB Brewery willonce again host its very own festival, known asBay Fest. It's a beer fest that takes place at ourbrewery during Long Island Craft Beer Week, and we host around 50 breweries and have about1,500 people, said Maisch.

For St. Patricks Day this year, GSB will makeits fourth sequential appearance in the annualBay Shore parade, once again employing localband Tradewinds to perform on the float. Thisyear the float will be bigger, and the band isgoing to be huge, tons of horns, two or threesaxes, a drum kit, and more, said Maisch. When

asked about his own beer preferences, Maischsaid, My favorite bounces around because weare doing a ton of one-off brews lately, but nowit's got to be our spring seasonal 'Hopsy Daisy'Session IPA. For more information, visit great-southbaybrewery.com, or call (631) 392-8472.

Long Ireland Brewing Co. has made hugewaves in the local beer scene in recent years, expanding both their selection and their reach.

This year, Long Irelands flagship Celtic Ale andother batches can be tasted at the Spring CraftBeer Festival. Brewery president Greg Martincontinues to retain a noble mindset when itcomes to events at his brewery, however. Wereally dont do anything special at the brewery[for St. Patricks Day] because we dont like totake away from the bars and restaurants thatserve our beer, he said. Non-holidays, on theother hand, seem to be fair game for breweryevents: We [just held] a Whiskey Weekend onFebruary 21 and 22. We had been aging some ofthese beers for up to a year in whiskey barrels.Weve had six beers aging over the last year. Some are really strong on the whiskey taste, andsome are more subtle.

When asked about his personal favorite ofLong Irelands beers, Martin found it difficult tochoose. Its kind of like kids depends whatday of the week it is and whos pissing me off.Im a mood drinker; I change with the seasons. He latered noted : If I had to give the old desertisland analogy, Id have to say our Extra SpecialBitter. For more information, visit longireland-brewing.com or call (631) 403-4303.

Spider Bite Brewing Company is a smallerLong Island brewery, but is not one whichshould be underestimated. Conceived in 2008,Spider Bites unique beers including the crisp

flagship First BitePale Ale canalready be foundboth in bottle andon tap across LongIsland and in NewYork City. If thesuds of thisHolbrook breweryare still yet to betasted, you will beable to do so atNassau Coliseumlater this month.Larry Goldstein owner, brewmasterand co-founder of Spider Bite was enthusiasticto report the near-completion of Spider Bitestasting room: Probably in three months or so,when its completed, we will be having livemusic and hosting brewery crawls and thingslike that. Make sure to try Goldsteins personalfavorite, Boris the Spider (Russian ImperialStout) during any visit. For more information, visit spiderbitebeer.com or call (631) 942-3255.

With the multitude of craft breweries poppingup all over Long Island, one may wonder if thereis any room for more. Lauri and Matt Spitz, thehusband-and-wife co-owners of MoustacheBrewing Company, are aiming to pave theirway into the crowded craft beer market.Moustache does not yet have an open tastingroom and will not be participating in this yearsSpring Craft Beer Festival. However, Lauri andher mustachioed husband have made theirEveryman's Porter and One Drop Pale Ale,among other batches, surprisingly accessible byselling growlers every Saturday from 11 am to 3pm at the Riverhead Indoor Winter FarmersMarket.

As a longtime brewer and beer enthusiast,Lauri Spitz had a tough time choosing a favorite. That's such a hard question; its like askingwhich kid is your favorite. I'm really into old ales right now, and anything barrel-aged.Matt is a big hop head and loves a good IPA,too. Not to let the season slip away from them,Lauri added, We're working on a Dry Irish Stout for [St. Patricks Day]. For more information, visit moustachebrewing.com or call (631) 591-3250.

  • Blue Point Goes National: Some arecalling it the end of an era; otherscant hold their applause. Earlier thismonth, Long Islands beloved BluePoint Brewery announced its purchase by beer giant Anheuser-Busch InBev after being independently operated for morethan 15 years. The local craft beerplanted its seeds in Patchogue in1998, and despite the transfer of ownership, is slated to stay there.Blue Point founders Mark Burfordand Peter Cotter are expected to closethe deal within the first quarter of2014.

In a statement, Luiz Edmond chief executive of the U.S. arm ofAnheuser-Busch InBev said, As wewelcome Blue Point into theAnheuser-Busch family ofbrands, welook forward toworking withMark and Peterto acceleratethe growth ofthe Blue Pointportfolio andexpand to newmarkets, whilepreserving theheritage andinnovation ofthe brands. So, why thecries of treach-ery from oneside and theoutpouring ofcongratulationsfrom the other? As of now, thefounders of thebrewery will bestaying onboard to over-see productionand will stillhave a huge hand in what goes on atthe home base. Unfortunately, thereality is that we as consumers dontknow for sure what this means forLong Islands oldest brewery andfor ourselves.

The most positive aspect could be:More Blue Point at lower prices. It isno secret that Anheuser-Busch is thelargest beer mogul in the country andone of the biggest on the planet. Thatmeans big money that can be used toupgrade the brewery and supportnationwide distribution, leavingmore time and income to conceiveand finance new brews. Of course,Blue Point has been tied in withAnheuser-Busch via Clare Rose foryears as far as east coast distributionis concerned, and much of the beeryou drink has actually been brewedin upstate Saratoga Springs for sometime now. This transaction, however, yields a further reach. Corporate dis-tribution brings with it the ability todrink favorites like Toasted Lager,Hoptical Illusion, or Rastafar-Ryewhile youre visiting your relatives

across the nation. Of course, there are pitfalls with

any sellout story. Mass productionsometimes makes for less attentionbeing paid to quality. Blue Point soldmore than 60,000 barrels last year, and that number will undoubtedlyskyrocket once the beer is in thehands of the giant. It would be naiveto assume that quality will not beaffected, even if its only slightly. Wewouldnt worry about a Bud LightBlueberry or a Budweiser DoubleWhite just yet (though by all means, hope against it).

    Some fans seem to believe thatLong Island has somehow lost itshometown hero. The situation is akinto watching your favorite local bandget picked up by Warner or Sony;

you supportthe band andyou want tosee them domake it,but at thesame timeyou canthelp butargue thatthey werebetter whenthey wereplaying barsand base-ments.That is con-ceivably thereason muchof the Islandis up in arms.It has alwaysbeen withunrelentingpride that aLong Islandcraft beerdrinkerwould travelout of state to

try new brews, only to tell anyonewhod listen how they simply musttaste Blue Point. Ive done it; youvedone it; weve all done it. Somehow, the magic of that sentiment is lostnow. However, one can always bragabout how it all started here; howthere was a time when the only placeyou could taste a Sour CherryImperial Stout was right here in ourown backyard.

There are many other breweriesthat remain (for now) exclusivelylocal. Dont pass up a chance to tryGreenport Harbor Brewing, SpiderBite Beer Co., Long Ireland BeerCompany, Port Jeff BrewingCompany or the soon-to-be estab-lished Mustache Brewing Co. BluePoint was and is the oldest and mostsuccessful brewery in the region, butit is also not the only option. So whenyou travel now, you can brag abouthow you helped drink Blue Pointinto the big leagues and how youstill have so many delicious hometown heroes. Joe Lopergalo

Who: Rorie Kelly is a young veteran singer/songwriter who hasperformed at virtually every topvenue in Long Island for the pastseveral years. An honest and emotive stylist, Kelly most recentlyreleased a live disc, Sincerely Live;shell perform on March 20 atCinema Arts Centre in Huntingtonin a Hard Luck Caf concert.

The Artists & Her Sound: FromKellys official bio: Rorie Kelly is asmall redheaded tornado of sound. Her aggressive acoustic guitar stylecomplements raw, powerhousevocals to pack a serious punch. First-time listeners often comment, I can't

believe that voice came out of thatbody.

Rorie has been making musicsince her teenage years and wasstrongly influenced by the tell-all,stream-of-consciousness songwritingstyle of the 90s. Growing up, I waslistening to Liz Phair, AlanisMorisette, and Ben Folds Five along-side Joni Mitchell and The Beatles, she says. That's where my founda-tion comes from as a musician.

Rorie's debut album, Wish UponA Bottlecap, was released in late2010 ... Her songwriting caught theear of radio host Garrison Leykham(who commissioned her to write thetheme song for his documentaryComic on a Half Shell), and theSolarfest Songwriting Competition, where she placed in the Top 10 in2013. Later that year, Rorie releaseda performance album titled Sincerely Live, featuring knockoutperformances of fan favorites as well as some of the new tunesthat had accumulated since therelease of Wish Upon ABottlecap.

Rorie is currently performing frequently in the northeast, writing constantly, and getting very little sleep indeed. Next up?Crazy amounts of shows and a second studio album, says thesinger/songwriter.

  • The Sochi Winter Olympics turnedout to be a nightmare for localhockey fans. The worst news: NewYork Islanders center John Tavares, the teams franchise player, broke hisleg playing for Team Canada in itsgame against Latvia. He will be gonefor the rest of the season, and whoknows if hell be the dominant playerthat he was prior to to the injurywhen he returns. Islanders generalmanager Garth Snow was so tickedoff that he stated that Olympics officials should compensate Islandersticket holders for what now appearsto be a doomed season. Of course,Snow would have had higher moralground had he not whined in lateJanuary about the decision of TeamUSA to bypass Kyle Okposo.

The USA mens hockey team lostin the semi-finals to Canada 1-0; the USA team thenphoned it in for the next days bronze medal consolation game as they were destroyed byFinland, 5-0. My guess is that the Americans wouldhave forfeited that game if they could have.

The worst moment for the US in Sochi camewhen the American womens hockey team lost toCanada in the gold medal game once again. Thistime, the US blew a 2-0 lead with four minutes leftin the game, though they were victimized by badofficiating down the stretch. Nonetheless, champions find ways to persevere, and the U.S.clearly wasnt up to the challenge. The most disgraceful aspect once the smoke cleared was theamount of pathetic patronizing on the part of both

social media and themainstream press, who raved aboutwhat a great game itwas. They tried everywhich way to avoidsaying that HillaryKnight and companychoked, and lambasted anyonewho had the temerityto express that opinion. If womenssports is going to betaken seriously, thenthe players cant betreated like five year-olds playing T-ball.The media has to bewilling to level thesame criticisms at

female athletes as they routinely do to their malecounterparts.

After seeing what happened to Plaxico Burressa few years ago and Ray Rice just the weekbefore how stupid could NewYork Knicks guardRaymond Felton be to allegedly possess an unlicensed gun in New York City? This isnt LosAngeles, where a perp walk is considered seriouspunishment for a celebrity who breaks the law.Felton will have to be David Copperfield or a modern Houdini to avoid a prison sentence.

The calendar had not even turned to Marchwhen the New York Mets faced their first seriousinjury of the 2014 season: Pitcher Jon Niese wasrushed back to New York City after complaining

about a dead throwing arm. This sounds eerily similar to Johan Santana after his no-hitter in June 2012.

Normally, players who had bad years sheepishly admit in spring training that they had

an injury that kept them from performing theirbest, and it is the sportswriters who react withskepticism at what appears to be a lame excuse. There was a role reversal in Port St. Lucie when theMets opened camp, as first baseman Ike Davis waslivid that New York Post beat writer Mike Puma

Belmontes Biggest Moment: It was the type ofperformance that will be talked about for years,as the Australian two-handed sensation JasonBelmonte, the sports biggest star, somehow, someway became an even bigger sensation by winningthe USBC Masters at Brunswick Zone CarolierLanes in North Brunswick, New Jersey on February23. If for some reason you didnt see the finals onESPN, subscribe to Xtra Frame and take a look atthe video there its one of the most incredible tournament finals youll ever see.

The hard facts and figures dont even tell theentire story. Sure, Belmonte became the first bowlerin almost 50 years to successfully defend a USBCMasters title; he won $50,000 for his efforts; he hadto run the entire stepladder finals to win. All headlines in their own right but those accomplishments were actually dwarfed by thedrama of the afternoon, as Belmonte was both brilliant and, to be blunt, awful all at the same time.

This tournament is so difficult to win,Belmonte told PBA.com and the assembled media.I always have high expectations for myself, but togo down in history as the third one and first in 50

years to win back-to-back is a huge honor.

In the first game of the stepladder,Belmonte needed to convert two nearly impossible splits back-to-backto defeat the game lefty RyanCiminelli who converted his owntough split just moments afterBelmontes double dip. The secondmatch saw gritty Tom Smallwooduncharacteristically miss three sparesin route to his loss, even at a time

when Bemonte started to experience serious troublefinding the pocket. The semi-final saw Belmonteeke out a victory over the resurgent MichaelHaugen Jr., 235-234, by rolling a spare and theexact nine count he needed in his last shot.

For the final match against Rookie of theYear E.J. Tackett, Belmonte made a ball changeto the versatile Storm UpRoar, and that seemedto be the difference maker as the strikes cameback while Tackett had trouble carrying. It allled to a 221-177 win for Belmonte in a grueling,teeth-gnashing fashion.

Again: If you didnt see this one, make surethat you do, as a more exciting event has neverbeen rolled. And while Belmonte has alreadycemented his status as an innovator andcrossover sports superstar, this type of performance will only add to his alreadyincredible legacy its got to be seen to bebelieved.

  • reported that he did not disclose a back injury tomanagement last year. The truth is that I justsucked last year and I wont make excuses, responded Davis.

The media reacted like a bunch of eight year-olds at the news that New York Yankees shortstopDerek Jeter would be calling it a career after 2014.There was a ton of idiotic columns written aboutwhether he is the second greatest Yankee of all-timeor the fifth or the eighth or whatever but littlewas written about what Jeter would like to do inhis post-baseball life. He surprised many by sayingthat he has always had an interest in publishing, and will have his own imprint at Simon & Schuster. It would be nice if Jeter could revive the publicationof sports titles, because the major publishers havegreatly reduced the number of sports books duringthe last decade.

More publishing: A book worth reading is Leigh

Steinbergs memoir, The Agent: My 40-Year CareerMaking Deals And Changing The Game (St.Martins Press). Steinberg, the inspiration for the1996 Tom Cruise film Jerry Maguire, delivers abehind-the-scenes tour of the world of athlete representation as he provides lots of anecdotal stories about Steve Young, Troy Aikman, andWarren Moon. The big disappointment is thatSteinberg doesnt give a lot of detail about whatfueled the alcoholism that destroyed both his busi-ness and personal life. Steinberg is trying to revivehis career as an agent, and was visible at the SuperBowl media headquarters.

CBS surprised the football world by shaking upits pregame show, The NFL Today. Gone are veterans Dan Marino and Shannon Sharpe; takingtheir place will be recently retired tight end andfuture Hall of Famer Tony Gonzales and former Jetslinebacker Bart Scott. CBS was happy with Scottswork for the CBS Sports Networks That OtherPregame Show. Ironically, a lot of Jets beat writersfound Scott surly when he played because he didnot like answering clichd questions. I found him tobe quite refreshing when I asked him about hisappearance in the ESPN 30 for 30 documentary, Broke, in which he detailed whyathletes often squander their lucrative salaries.

The annual New York International Toy Fairtook place at the Javits Center two weeks ago.Franklin Sports displayed its new plastic ball apparatus, MLB Superstar Batter 2 in 1, that allowsplayers to hit off a tee or to hit a moving ball fungo-style by stepping on a petal. San Antonio Spurspoint guard Tony Parker introduced his Maverixskateboard to the American market after successfully launching it in his native France last

July. Zing Toys was ahead of The Hunger Gameswhen it came to archery, as it has long been a man-ufacturer of kid-safe bow and arrow target practiceproducts; its latest is the Zing Zano Bow. WorldWrestling Entertainment made an impact at ToyFair, as Wicked Cool Toys and Mattel had line s ofWWE action figures and related products, whileUSAopoly is launching a Monopoly-style gamewith WWE wrestlers. Spalding has created awastepaper basketball made out of a basketballhoop and netting. Its the official receptacle of theWPBA: Waste Paper Basketball Association!

On TheRun:GreyhoundsAre BackGreyhounds haveconfirmed theirArdent Musicdebut with theirnew album,Accumulator, outApril 8. It's an 11-song collection ofrich, rootsy soulby the Austin,Texas-based duo.The self-pro-duced album features AnthonyFarrell on keysand AndrewTrube on guitaras they trade offvocals fromFarrell's huskyfunk to Trube'seerie twang.

Greyhoundswill kick off anational tour atSXSW, and playJoe's Pub in NewYork City

on April 18. Tour dates andmore: greyhoundsmusic.com.

Farrell and Trube met whenthe former answered a classi-fied ad in LA Weekly for akeyboardist. They subse-quently relocated to Trube'snative Texas, playing residen-cies at Austin's ContinentalClub and recording and tour-ing as members of JJ Grey'sband, Mofro. Last fall,Greyhounds signed withArdent Music in Memphis, the label that launched BigStar and is home to the leg-endary Ardent Studios, where every-one from Leon Russell and ZZ Top toThe White Stripes and R.E.M. haverecorded.

Suzy Bogguss:Looking A Bit HaggardCountry music legend Suzy Boggussdidn't set out to craft a Merle

Haggard tribute record. Some might call thatserendipity; she just callsit "Lucky."

"He really is the poet ofthe common man," saidBogguss of her newalbum, Lucky; she kickedoff her career with 1989'sSomewhere Between, herdebut album named afterone of Haggard's earlysongs. "Not every artisthas music that is as universal as Merle's. It's pretty heavy-duty stuff, and I think that's why to somany of us who sing and write songs,he's such a king among us."

Bogguss dove deep into Haggard'scatalog, taking care to hold on to thatoriginal vision of finding songs thatresonated with her, not just pullingout and recycling the hits. The resultis an acoustic record with vibe, featuring the classics "Silver Wings,""The Bottle Let Me Down," "If WeMake It Through December," and "IThink I'll Just Stay Here And Drink,"and many more.

Lucky is now available wherevermusic is sold. Bogguss is expected toperform live shows in support of thenew effort.

Sam Roberts Band:Canadians To Tour U.S.On February 15, The Sam RobertsBand one of Canada's most popularrock acts for more than a decade, yetpretty much unknown in the lower48 made their American morningtelevision debut on CBS ThisMorning. Finally, things seem to bebreaking right for the charismaticRoberts and crew in America; theysold out their current tour opening onFebruary 11 at Mercury Lounge, andthey recently released an acoustic version of their new sin-gle, "We're All In ThisTogether," from theiralbum Lo-Fantasy, aspart of Paper BagRecords Sessions videoseries.

Throughout it all,Roberts' lyrics on Lo-Fantasy grapple withgreater questions ofidentity and self-discov-ery in the modern age."That's the test of a rock& roll song or a pop

song to me," said Roberts. "It's to confront those issues in three or fourminutes, to get to a place where themusic itself helps bring you towardssome enlightenment, or at least someresolution to those big questions."

The Old 97sReady To Roll AnewThe Old 97's heralded as the nextbig thing two decades back in a prediction that didnt quite live up tothe bands initial hype have confirmed the April 29 release of theirnew album and ATO debut, MostMessed Up, a revealing 12-track meditation on 20 years in music thatfinds them at their raucous, boozybest. Recorded in Austin and

produced by SalimNourallah, Most MessedUp also features guestappearances by TommyStinson (TheReplacements, Guns N' Roses) and Jon Rauhouse (NekoCase) on lap steel.

Songs such as"Wasted," "Intervention,""Wheels Off," "Let's GetDrunk & Get It On," and"Most Messed Up" hintat the kind of narratorsfrontman Rhett Miller

likes to inhabit: men who possess anappetite for indulgence and won't leta few bad decisions get in the way ofa good story ("There's a lot of darkness hidden in this record,"Miller explained).

The Old 97's emerged from Dallas20 years ago at the forefront of amusical movement blending rootsy,country-influenced songwriting withpunk rock energy. Theyre consideredamong the godfathers of todaysreturn to rootsy sounds.

They'll perform on June 3 atWebster Hall in New York City.

By George: The Boy Is Back In TownFormer Culture Club singer and LGBT icon BoyGeorge will embark upon an eight-date NorthAmerican tour in April in support of his new album,This Is What I Do (local date: April 22 at Irving Plazain New York City). The new album features collaborations with producer Youth (Siouxsie & TheBanshees, Primal Scream, The Orb, U2, DepecheMode), as well as a string of guest musicians including DJ Yoda, Kitty Durham (Kitty Daisy &Lewis), Ally McErlaine (Texas/Red Sky July), MCSpee (Dreadzone), and Nizar Al Issa.

Piano Man At Area Cinemas A new film, Elton John: The Million

Dollar Piano, will be screened nationally at more than 700 movie theaters for a two-night event onTuesday, March 18 and Wednesday,March 26 at 7 pm including selectedvenues in Long Island. Captured live from Johns residency at TheColosseum at Caesars Palace in LasVegas, the concert experience featuresmost of Johns classic hits includingRocket Man, Tiny Dancer, YourSong, and more than we can list here,as well behind-the-scenes footage andbiographical highlights from thecourse of Johns lengthy career. Area theaters taking part in thisnationwide music event includeFarmingdale Multiplex Cinemas;College Point Multiplex in Flushing;Hampton Bays 5; Island 16 Cinema DeLux in Holtsville; and WestburyStadium 12.

With the momentum of a majorpre-release nowbehind it, area favoriteturned national supergroupBayside has unleashed itspowerful sixth album, Cult, via Hopeless Records.Following a massive pre-release listening party viaPandora and a rapidly growing batch of positiveearly press, Cult, at presstime, was enjoying a world-wide launch (Singapore, forexample, posted that thealbum ranked at #5 oniTunes Alt Chart Singaporeand #44 overall on iTunesSingapore). Fans can nowpurchase the album fromiTunes and all music stores.

Without missing a single beat andcontinuing to grow bigger with eachsuccessive record, Bayside hasn't letup from their Queen-based bombasticalt-rock that has been their signaturesound since their humble beginnings14 years ago. Their previous five

studio albums (2004's Sirens andCondolences, 2005's Bayside, 2007'sThe Walking Wounded, 2008'sShudder, and 2011's Killing Time)have set the stage for Cult, which canseen as unadulterated and pureBayside. Capitalizing on the searingguitars of Jack O'Shea, the meatybasslines of Nick Ghanbarian, themuscular drumming of ChrisGuglielmo, and Anthony Raneri's distinct and unique vocal stylings,Bayside has always tapped into anaudience that spans decades and

scenes. Returning to the winning production team of Shep Goodman(who had worked with the band pre-viously on their signature albums,Bayside and Walking Wounded), andAaron Accetta (Four Year Strong, HeIs We), Cult embraces their past just

as strongly as their future, creating analbum that at once feels straight-upBayside while also bringing a wholenew invigorating freshness and energy.

From the anthemic opening track"Big Cheese" to the seething firstreleased track "Pigsty" to the intro-spective "Somethings Wrong," Cultshows the band at its ultimate best.Already, critical praise is coming infrom all quarters, and we must agree:Bayside is hitting its stride, showcas-ing newfound maturity to forge a

more completeand roundedsound than everbefore. ThePigsty releasemay turn out tobe the biggestsong of thebands career; itsa rocker in theclassic sensewhile soundinglike nothingthats ever comebefore it.

    Baysideremains AnthonyRaneri (guitarsand vocals), Jack

O'Shea (guitar), Christopher J.Guglielmo (drums) and NickGhanbarian (bass). The band returnsto the area on April 4 with a homecoming show at Best BuyTheater in New York City (tickets via ticketmaster.com).

THE GOOD TIMES LIST:UNDERRATED GUITARISTSThe rock world has always been seeking its

next Jimi Hendrix or Eric Clapton yet, morethan a few amazing players haven't gottentheir due even as fret-happy fans still look forthe next big thing. Pandora these five:

Domenic Troiano: TheCanadian star, who died in2005, had the impossible taskof replacing Joe Walsh in TheJames Gang and (eventually)Randy Bachman in The GuessWho, but he was a master ofjazz, R&B, blues, and evenhard rock like few guitarists

ever. Seek out: War Zone (solo), HadEnough (The James Gang), Long Gone (The Guess Who).

Bill Nelson: The problem with Nelson'scareer is that his best-known band, Be BopDeluxe, never seemed to know what it wantedto be yet, Nelson was as deft and polished asany guitarists of the 1980s: Seek out: The concert disc Live In The Air Age.

Tommy Bolin: Another guitarist bestowedthe impossible task of replacing Walsh in TheJames Gang (and later Richie Blackmore inDeep Purple), Bolin was a rocker at heart butcould play in any style with flash yet withtaste. He died of a reported drug overdose in1976. Seek out: Do It (The James Gang), DeepPurple's album Come Taste The Band.

Son Seals: This Arkansas native began as adrummer, but became one of the hottest bluesguitarists of the 70s and80s; his style was like abrawnier Albert King. Hedied in 2004. Phish performs one of his classicsongs,, Funky Bitch. Seekout: His entire AlligatorRecords catalog.

Keith Strickland:Recently retired from touring, his amazingrhythm guitar work on such B-52s dance classics as Love Shack and Good Stuffputs him in the ranks of the great R&B playersof all time. Amazingly, Strickland also is a converted drummer.

The brilliant standup comicand social satirist JaneaneGarofalo is certainly no elitist; sheonce stated that she is just a littlejealous of people who don't carewhat goes into their eye hole, earhole, mouth hole.

Darn tootin'. We wish we couldbe that way, too, joyously leapinginto our bucket of bolts to try outevery new fatty snack trumpetedby profits-over-nutrition fast foodjoints. We're sure they're all justwonderful but then again, wedon't have a Morgan SmithGoodwin in our lives; she's thecute redhead all over Wendy'sadvertising who coos Now, that'sbetter! every time someonechows down on some newfangledburger or chicken sandwich ... butreal life ain't that way. Every womanin our lives points at our robust midsections and makes some sort ofsnarky comment about, well, themounds of pure crap we eat. But theTV box told us to!

In all seriousness, what we can'tfathom is who actually prefers aSubway sandwich to a deli-madeactual sub; a Big Mac to a good dineror restaurant hamburger; or PizzaHut to, well, virtually every

independent pizzeria onthe planet, even in PagoPago. The special, limited time offeringsdreamed up by most fastfood chains aren't wortha whole lot, either nutritionally or taste-wise. However, we can be as rationalabout it all we want and it doesn't mean athing people get into

hurries and need to eat quickly, andthat's why most of us grab fast food. There are times when you just haveto eat, and you have to eat something.

Which brings us to February 17 President's Day, as your humbleBountiful Gourmet decided to take aride down Old Country Road, believing two hours past noon was agood time to grab a fast bite. Badmove. Our first warning, whichwe've noted before: The Burger Kingat 409 Old County Road in Westburyis like visiting The Land That TimeForgot you'll try to remember whatyear it is before you get to the frontof the line to enjoy this particularlocation's sloppy, cold food, usually

So we jumped back in the car andtrudged to the Subway at 890 OldCountry Road in Westbury; by thattime, about a half-hour had gone byand time was a-wastin', so we walkedin, pointed at a sign we saw andcroaked gimme that. That wassomething called a Flatizza, and oh,boy, was it was every bit as good as itsounds. Flatzizza hype at Subway'sown website: Keep your taste budsfresh with our new PepperoniFlatizza! Youll love the supercrispy flatbread, marinara sauce, melty mozzarella cheese and tastypepperoni from the first bite to thelast! Plus, it was only $5, and wewere in a rush.

Our review: Keep your mouth atleast four feet away from any flavorSubway Flatizza! You'll wonder howa flatbread from a toaster comes outsoggier than a bowl of week-oldWeetabix, with the consistency of awet paperback book. You'll marvelhow much the sauce, cheese, andpepperoni taste like the pre-fab stuffyou scarfed down in your grammarschool cafeteria!

HD Radio: The Other Format Springs To LifeBiquity Digital Corporation, the

developer of digital HD RadioTechnology for AM and FM audioand data broadcasting, recentlyannounced significant growth in audience, receiver sales and digitalbroadcast services. Some radio fansseem oblivious to the format butHD Radio now seems to be growingby leaps and bounds.

With an annual growth rate ofmore than 150 percent in 2013, listening to stations broadcasting withHD Radio technology in cars hasexceeded three billion hours. This is a

result of the explosive growth of theinstalled base of HD Radio receiversin cars, both factory installed andaftermarket. With 15 million of thealmost 17.5 million digital radiosinstalled in cars and trucks already onthe road, and an estimated additional7.5 million receivers to be added in2014, the number of HD Radioreceivers on America's highways is expected toexceed 22 million by the endof the year. Currently, 2,200stations offer digital broadcastservices to their local audience. These stations collectively account for 78percent of all radio listening in the USA.

As the installed base of HD Radioreceivers rapidly increases, so is lis-tening to HD2/HD3 programming.According to the latest Spring 2013Nielsen Audio Nationwide audienceestimates, more than four million peo-ple listen to an HD2/HD3 channel inan average week. This represents a238 percent increase in AverageQuarter Hour audience from the Fall2011 survey. During the same period,Cume audience (the number ofunique listeners) grew at more than200 percent. Currently, there are 1,475

HD2/HD3 programs offered by digital broadcasters. These are newunique programs made possiblethrough the use of HD Radio broadcast technology.

An example of this new digital programming is the new ClearChannel Media and Entertainment'sNickelodeon channel, called Nick

Radio, which can be heard on digitalHD2/HD3 stations like New York'sWHTZ-HD2.

HD Radio receiver sales growthhas also accelerated, with a new radiosold every six seconds. Almost 17.5million HD Radio receivers have beensold, with over 15 million factory-installed in new cars or auto aftermarket units. This rapidlyexpanding installed base is helpingbroadcast radio retain its dominancein the new digital dashboards. Morethan 200 vehicle brands will includeHD Radio Technology in 2014, half

will be sold as standard equipment;more than 5.5 million HD Radioreceivers were sold in 2013.

This past year also saw the largestSKU count increase in aftermarketHD Radio auto products ever nearlydouble that of 2012. CE unit ship-ments through 2013, now total over2.3 million. Additionally, 2013 saw a

significant expansionof the traditional AVmarket as bothMarantz and Yamahaintroduced severalnew preamp/tunerproducts incorporat-ing digital technology.

Broadcasters andreceiver manufacturers are taking fulladvantage of digital services enabledthrough HD Radio technology. Aprime example of that is the rollout ofArtist Experience, a service thatenables stations to provide synchro-nized images such as album cover artwith their audio programming.Currently, more than 500 stations arenow supporting Artist Experience onmore than 900 digital broadcastsnationwide. Artist Experience is nowwidely available in new HD Radio carreceivers as well as consumer electronics products.

Who: James Talia is a Sayville-based composer, songwriter, and pianist. The artist composed, arranged, and played (or programmed) all of the partson this new album except guitar, saxophone, andtrumpets. The album was recorded, mixed, and mastered at Tiki Recording Studios in Glen Cove;it was produced by Talia and Tiki's Fred Guarino, which accounts of the major league sonic quality here, which is absolutely superb.

The Artist & His Sound: This is a well-performed,thoughtful disc with heart; a highlight is that the liner

notes detail the origins of each original song, which is a real plus and brings the listener closer to the artist. If instrumentals of varyingmoods and styles strike your fancy, this uniquealbum should find a home in your audio system. Our favorite here is Late Night FoodGroove, which clearly seems destinedto wind up on a film or TV soundtrack.
