VIGIL CANDLE DEDICATION

Mabel Lombardo

November 1—November 7

Lois Sparano November 8—November 14

If you would like to dedicate a candle in memory or honor of a family member or loved one, please contact the office 508-650-3545. The suggested offering is $10.00. The name of the person will be placed in the bulletin and the candle will burn for one week, Friday through to the following Thursday.

“TAKE HOME QUESTIONS” FOR THIS WEEKEND:

1)Have you ever experienced someone else taking credit for your work or ideas? How does that make you feel?

2)What are some consequences of comparing yourself to other people?

3)The Pharisee thought he had a lot of accomplishments that would please God such as fasting and tithing, and he thought that he was more righteous than “the rest of humanity.” The tax collector did not think he was even worthy to raise his eyes to heaven when he prayed. He did not tell God about any ac-complishments, but just asked for God’s mercy. Since the tax collector went away “justified” meaning “in right (reconciled) relationship with God” -- what does this teach us about God?

Good Shepherd Parish is honored to host a Silver Rose on October 30. Each year, from early March through mid-December, Silver Roses are stewarded by Knights of Columbus councils along routes from Canada, through the Unit-ed States, and on to Mexico. Every stop the Silver Rose makes throughout the pilgrimage is a rosary-centered occasion when parishioners and com-munity members pray for respect for life, for the spir-itual renewal of each nation, and for the advancement of the message of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Our Knights council is sponsoring the Silver Rose prayer service on Wednesday, October 30 at St. Zepherin Church, 7:00 – 8:00 PM. Please join us for this special

WEEKLY OFFERTORY Weekend of

Oct. 19/20, 2019

Offertory budget $16,549

Actual Received $ 22,661

Variance $6,112

$2,862 of the actual was received through WeShare, our electronic giving program.

FY2020, Year-to-Date Offertory as of 10/20/2019

Offertory Budget $264,784

Actual Received $203,814

Variance -$60,970

July 1, 2019 marked the beginning of the NEW Fiscal Year 2020 that will end on June 30, 2020.

Please RENEW your Offertory pledge commitment to our parish. The total Offertory budget for this

fiscal year is $846,000 (weekly Offertory $844,000 and Holy Days $2,000).

The Offertory is the main source of income that helps us pay our day to day operating expenses; therefore, your ongoing support is needed to help us remain on strong financial ground and is very much appreciated.

We are pleased to include in the bulletin a weekly fi-nancial report to highlight your Offertory contributions in comparison to the weekly Offertory budget project-ed for the Fiscal Year 2020. In addition, a financial performance summary report will be published period-ically to preview the overall financial performance of the parish throughout the year. We are always grate-ful for your generosity!

Offer tory & RENEW, REJOICE, REFOCUS Campaign Update

Many thanks to our parishioners who already renewed their offertory pledge commitment to support our par-ish in the fiscal year 2020. Due to their lump sum do-nation, our offertory performance on the last 2 week-ends have met/surpass our weekly budget of $16,549. Please see the financial report included on this page.

Also, we are very happy to report that as of Oct. 20th, we have received 26 pledges (worth $61,380) toward our RENEW, REJOICE, REFOCUS Campaign’s goal of $500,000. We are very grateful to our donors and encourage everyone to participate, so we can, togeth-er, reach our necessary goal.

It is hoped that once the goal of $500,000 is reached, extra money will be set aside for an endowment fund for the parish. The Catholic Foundation is paying any where between 4 – 7% return every year, but to open an account there is a $10,000.00 minimum.

Also, folks have approached me about giving anony-mously to the Capital Campaign.

Yes, this can be done; just make the check out to Good Shepherd Parish and ones identity will be kept secret.

And one can make arrangements to designate Good Shepherd Parish in ones’ will and estate planning. To-gether we can leave a legacy of a strong vibrant par-ish for the next generation of believers.

For your convenience, there are Offertory/Renew, Re-joice, Refocus Campaign pledge envelopes at the en-trance of both churches. You can also, visit https://goodshepherdwayland.churchgiving.com/ to donate online.

Our next 2nd collection to support our RENEW, RE-JOICE, REFOCUS campaign to make capital upgrades/improvements at St. Ann and St. Zepherin will take place on the weekend of November 9/10, 2019. Your generosity is always very much appreciated.

God Bless,

Fr. Dave O’Leary, Pastor

The Confirmation Re-treat weekend is the highlight of our Confir-mation program! I am seeking overnight vol-unteers who are willing to sleep on air mat-tresses at St. Zepherin

Center on 12/7 as chaperones during this retreat weekend. Our other adult leaders spend all weekend helping to lead the retreat, and it would be awesome if a group of 5 volunteers could come in at 10:30pm on 12/7 to relieve them for the night, sleep over as chaperones, and stay until breakfast is served at 8:00am on the morning of 12/8. If you would like to volunteer, please email me! Thank you! Laura: [email protected]

I n 1531, when the indigenous peoples of Mexico were subjugated and the practice of human sacrifice was still a recent memory, the Mother of God appeared to St. Juan Diego as a pregnant native woman, now known as

Our Lady of Guadalupe.

She sent him with miraculous flowers in this cloak to tell the bishop to build a church where people could receive her Son and her loving, tender care. When St. Juan Diego opened the cloak before the bishop, an image of Our Lady was revealed that remains to this day. The chapel was quickly built, millions em-braced Christianity, and the Church increased its protection of the indigenous peoples.

By embracing the mission entrusted to him, St. Juan Diego helped bring Christ’s transforming love to cultures gripped by oppression and death.

Today, we again see the dignity of human life dis-regarded. Unborn children are destroyed through abortion, and ill people are encouraged and as-sisted to take their own lives. How do we respond?

The essence of our identity is that we are created in God’s image and likeness and loved by Him. Nothing can diminish the priceless worth of any hu-man life. Every person is cherished.

God creates every person for eternal union with Himself and continually invites us to embrace a lov-ing relationship with Him. Every person is chosen.

We are called to be messengers of God’s love, treating one another as cherished and chosen by Him. In doing so, we help build a culture that re-spects all human life. Every person is sent.

Like St. Juan Diego, let us embrace our daily mission to help others encounter God’s transforming, life-giving love.

Most people know the frustration of calling a bank, merchant, service provider, or business for help only to be trapped with the cheery robot voice that begins “if your call is about, say …” only to find that none of the categories match your problem. Hang up, call back and try some other option, scream at it, and finally you’re “on hold” until a human being can assist you. Often the man or woman who picks up – after the notice that your call is being recorded – is able to resolve your problem in ten or fifteen minutes. So, you hang up relieved, but scarred and dreading the next time you have to call.

Though a weak translation and the choice of verses ob-scure the point, today’s first reading (Sirach 35:12-14, 16-18) responds to similar frustrations in prayer. De-spite God’s self-proclaimed concern for justice, hearing, i.e. responding to, the cries of the poor and oppressed, the divine prayer answering system does not appear coded with the right words to produce results. The vers-es which conclude our reading acknowledge the neces-sity for both access (“the prayer of the lowly pierces the clouds”) and persistence (“will not desist until the Most High responds”).

The remaining verses stress the point that God judgment will not be limited to the local, county court of God’s people living in Judea. The Lord’s justice is a global concern, “. . . crushes the loins of the unmerciful…repays mortals according to their deeds, and the works of all according to their thoughts,” (vv. 22-24). The version of Sirach in our Bibles was composed ca. 132 BCE in Alex-andria, Egypt, one of the greatest centers of Greek learning and science as well as global trade from as far east as India and west across the Mediterranean to Rome. Its author translated and reworked a book com-posed in Hebrew by this grandfather, a Jerusalem scribe some 50 years earlier.

Archaeologists have recovered fragments of the He-brew from Judea in Jesus’ time Even though Sirach is not included in Jewish (or Protestant) scriptures, those who heard Jesus’ take on prayer that gets through to God (Lk 18:9-14) could have known this discussion. They wouldn’t need instant replay to recognize Jesus’ “change up”. Calls do not need the ID profile (lowly, oppressed, widow, super-pious, St. Paul). It might be one of the unjust oppressors just waking up to where his life has put him.

REQUEST ON HOLD B y Pheme Pe rkin s

It was a very busy visit to the Boston Com-mon on October 5th during which we served more than 100 brothers and sisters in need. The weather turned cold before our visit, so they were grateful to receive sweatshirts and long pants to stay warm. In determining appropriate clothing sizes, vol-unteers spoke Spanish, French, and Portuguese (and English of course!) with our brothers and sisters and enjoyed making personal connections with them.

HEARTFELT THANKS to the middle school and high school students who made many sandwiches and bless-ing bags! With so many people in line, it was wonder-ful to have these donations to distribute along with the clothing.

We are in need of winter jackets and boots with the cold months ahead. Donations of sweatshirts, sweaters and long-sleeve shirts help our brothers and sisters layer their clothing to stay warm.

DONATIONS: Your donations of NEW OR GENTLY USED FOOTWEAR AND CLOTHING are greatly ap-preciated. Please place these donations and water bottles (16 oz. bottles) in the plastic blue bins inside both churches.

The MOST NEEDED ITEMS for our November trip are:

New/gently used winter jackets, hooded sweatshirts, sweaters and long-sleeve shirts (men’s sizes M-3X; women’s sizes M-XL)

New/gently used winter boots, sneakers, and shoes (men’s sizes 8-12; women’s sizes 6-9)

New/gently used hats, gloves, and mittens New/gently used men’s jeans, long pants, and sweat-

pants (waist sizes 32-38, M-XL) New/gently used women’s long-sleeve shirts, long

pants, jeans, and sweatpants (sizes S-XL) New men's t-shirts, briefs, and boxers (M-3X); new

women's briefs (sizes 5-10)

Please, no blankets as the shelters will not accept them.

Please PRAY for our brothers and sisters living on the streets. This month’s SPECIAL PRAYER REQUESTS are for Dimas, Douglas, Francisco, James, Jason, Joe, Jun-ior, Karen, Kenny, Leigh, Lex, Luther, Lynda, Marcus, Maria, Marie, Mary, Matthew, Nelson, Patricia, Rose-line, Rufus, Sidney, and Warren.
