Meeting Hi-Lites Tuesday June 9, 2015

6:00 PM The meeting was called to order and opened with prayer. The meeting was a joint session between the Parish Council & Finance Council. Ten members and three guests were present. A new member of the council, Angel Amador, was introduced and will be representing the Hispanic Community.

Parish Office: Father Ben Butler will be celebrating a Mass of Thanksgiving at Good Shepherd Parish on June 14, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. with a reception to follow in the school cafeteria.

Family Life: The current ministry leader has indicated to Father John her desire to resign as Ministry leader, but agreed to help with Mardi Gras 2016.

Mardi Gras – February 6, 2016: Father John invited Mardi Gras Chairperson Barbara Lamb Gass to speak on the viability of Good Shepherd continuing to host the annual Mardi Gras celebration. The current Steering Committee (Barbara Gass & Phyllis Lafferty) spoke at length about the logistics of hosting the event and the need for many new volunteers to come forward. Several key volunteers, from prior events, have indicated they will continue in their capacities. It was suggested and approved that proceeds be divided between Good Samaritan and the parish; therefore, it will be incumbent upon Good Samaritan to canvas our volunteers and other church supporters to find people willing and able to work on the various tasks involved with putting on an event of this magnitude. Of note, the venue, band and food have already been secured. It was recommended by the committee that in partnership with Good Samaritan that we continue with the event for 2016. The recommendation was approved by Father John and the council.

The meeting was adjourned and closed with prayer at 7:30 p.m. Next meeting date to be announced.

SAINTS PETER AND PAUL

Saints Peter and Paul are the principle pillars of the Church founded by Christ. Saint Peter was chosen by Christ to be his first Vicar on earth; he was endowed with powers of the keys of the kingdom of heaven (Mt 16:13-19) and charged with the role of Shepherd of Christ's flock (Jn 21:15-17). In St. Peter and his successors, we have a visible sign of unity and communion in faith and charity. Divine grace led St. Peter to profess Christ's divinity.

St. Peter suffered martyrdom under Nero, in about the year 64 AD. He was buried at the hill of the Vatican; recent excavations have revealed his tomb on the very site of St. Peter's Basilica.

Saint Paul was chosen to form part of the apostolic college by Christ himself on the road to Damascus (Acts 9:1-16). Selected to bring Christ's name to all peoples (Acts 9:15), he is the greatest missionary of all time, the advocate of pagans, the Apostle of the Gentiles. St. Paul was beheaded in the Tre Fontane along the Via Ostiense and buried nearby, on the site where the basilica bearing his name now stands.

THE WORD IN OUR LIVES

Who’s More Generous?

Does the Christian duty to help the poor seem to be overwhelming? We hear more and more about the

homeless and jobless. Even in St. Paul’s time there was more than enough poverty to go around. He was trying to build interest (in our second reading) in a project to help the Christians in Jerusalem. We see two of his reasons here.

First he tells what fine Christians they are, and hopes that they will be just as good in giving to his collection. Paul is challenging them to continue to show their love for God in their support for fellow Christians. The second reason was to show a good example: By helping the church in Jerusalem, they would show that Christians were united in faith and love for each other.

The main example he uses is Jesus, who made himself poor (i.e., human) so that we could be rich in grace and forgiveness. Paul challenges them, and us, to follow that example in giving from our wealth so that others can survive. Note that he doesn’t expect them to live in poverty, just to share what they have out of love for Christ.

Today, we can ask ourselves, “Do I give to the poor because I feel guilty about all that I have? Or do I want to show my love for Jesus when I see him in the poor?” By looking at why we give to charities, we may find ourselves being even more generous than we expected.
