Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Message from Monsignor René Mathieu: (1) We welcome summer visitors to our parish. We hope your visit is restful and enjoyable. We look forward every year to the participation of summertime visitors at our daily and weekend liturgies, and I invite you to join in other parish activities as well. (2) The Summer Mass Schedule: Check the list of Masses in this bulletin if you are uncertain about week-day and weekend Mass times. Because of the many funeral Masses, only

one weekday Mass is scheduled when one of the priests is on vacation. At St. Margaret in Old Orchard Beach, we must lock the parking lots after the weekend 4:00 pm and 9:30 am Masses due to summer loiterers, revelers and the resulting disturbances for our neighbors. Next weekend, I will make a “pilgrimage” to St. Brendan Chapel in Biddeford Pool for my annual pastoral visit! (3) A possible “Joy in Action” for this week based on Pope Francis’ apostolic exhortation on the joy of the family, Amorus Laetitiae: Support our brothers and sisters around the world through prayer and by giving generously to next weekend’s Peter’s Pence collection, which helps Pope Francis support those who are suffering as a result of war, oppression, or natural disasters. (4) I am pleased to announce that as of July 19, Good Shepherd Parish is the parish with the greatest number of gifts pledged to the statewide 2018 Catholic Appeal – 727 in all. This compares with Corpus Christi Parish in the Waterville area (622). Good Shepherd Parish has the second highest total of pledges thus far -- $163,617 of its $202,895 goal (81%), surpassed only by $292,252 pledged by Parish of the Holy Eucharist (Falmouth/Yarmouth/Freeport/Gray). Statewide, all parishes combined have reached 84% of the $2,491,781 goal. I am grateful for the demonstrated support of Good Shepherd parishioners and visitors. If you have not yet pledged, please do so as soon as you are able. You may find pledge forms at each church location or at the parish office. It is worth remembering that the Appeal funds ministries that directly support our parish or ministries in the parish: Campus Ministry at UNE; Office of Life-long Faith Formation; Catholic Schools Office, teacher pension & school rebates; Office of Communications; Harvest Magazine; St. Louis Child Development Center. (5) The long-admired artwork of Sanford native, Fr. Paul Plante, who formerly served at St. Joseph in Biddeford (1975-1976), is now available for purchase on a new website (www.paulplante.com) that serves as both a canvas of his talent and a tribute to his indelible legacy. The work of Fr. Plante, who died in June 2016, has been featured in art galleries around the country. His most famous work focuses on the eyes of song-birds, hawks, ducks, and other birds in 4 ½” x 4 ½” oil pastel paintings. The paintings reflect his fascination with birds, their spirit, and their furtive nature. His portfolio also includes fish, plums, apples, and more. The work is searchable by collection and cate-gory on the new website. Visitors to the site may also explore a few of the many other contributions made by Fr. Plante during his life. One section features his homilies, while another is dedicated to his professional experiences and even includes the words of the artist himself. At the request of Fr. Plante, all proceeds will be given to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland to be used for diocesan needs. For more information, contact Fr. Daniel Greenleaf at [email protected] or Claire Levesque at [email protected]. (6) Thank You of the Week: To parishioners who launder and press the many altar linens used in our churches week after week. Thank you!

JOKES PRIESTS CAN TELL, Vol. 9 - Msgr. Tonne: Once a man went into a diner and asked, “Do you serve crabs here?” The doorman replied, “Sure, we serve anyone. Have a seat.”

obtains, mercy receives. Prayer, mercy and fasting: these three are one, and they give life to each other.
