Twenty-Fifth S unday In Ordinary Time

Catechetical Sunday is cele-brated on the third Sunday of September and recognizes the important ministry of teaching and evangelization. The task of handing on the Gospel is en-trusted to the whole community, who by word and example, form young and new members in the way of the Gospel. Parish pro-grams assist parents in teaching the basics of faith through litur-gical experience, instruction and faith formation. This ministry is essential for the parish to grow, for individuals to develop as believers and for the ongoing spiritual formation of the whole community. On this Sunday, we recognize those who are called to be teachers and ask for God’s blessing and grace.

Deacon’s Corner: Through the end of September we hear in both the Letter of St. James and the Gospel of Mark the radical nature to which our Chris-tian faith calls each of us. A faith that forces each of us at times to go against our natural instinct to follow external rules and norms so we can maintain our social acceptance and esteem. To do this we must trust in the gift of the indwelling Spirit even when it urges us to break the illusory norms as we hold on to the hope of the Kingdom to come. This, as we see by Jesus example, is most easily done by sharing the love of God. Jesus as we hear in Mark does the right thing even when it brings him at odds with his own faith community and causes him to be repeated rejected and eventually crucified. How far is each of us willing to go outside the cultural norms and at risk of our social ac-ceptance to build the Kingdom by our evangelization? The message of Jesus and the early Christian Church is clear and revolutionary. Pope Francis is leading us by example to be doers and not hearers only of the Good News. Not surprisingly, as Jesus found, the greatest resistance seems to be come from his own faith community wishing to preserve external norms rather than engaging in the ministry of confronting human suffering. WWJD is the first question we need to answer the second is am I willing to do the same without counting the costs?

Catholic Ministries Appeal

The Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA) is the annual appeal inviting Catholics in the Diocese of Rochester to join in a partnership to advance the mission of our Church. This year’s theme "We Are All One Body" celebrates some of the many good things that take place across our 12-county diocese every day. Indeed, the CMA is the lifeblood that nourishes our ministries and helps us share our faith with others. Every dollar received in the CMA is used directly or indirectly to fund ministries affecting every Catholic and faith community in our diocese. Your generous gift to the CMA helps fund:

This week letters are being sent out from Bishop Matano asking for our support of this year’s Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA). I will be making a personal gift this year to help Good Shepherd Catholic Community reach our parish goal of $29,732. I sincerely hope that you will as well. The sacrificial gifts of Catholics like you and me throughout the Diocese provide about half of the diocesan budget – which in turn supports ministries and programs like the ones mentioned above. I know that you will prayerfully consider the Bishop’s re-quest.

When you receive the mailing from Bishop Matano, it will include a brochure, letter, pledge card and return envelope. Please read the material carefully and give prayerful consideration to your participation. If you are a newly registered parishioner or if you didn’t receive a mailing, extra copies of the brochure and pledge forms will be available in the church vestibules.

How much should I give? That is a personal decision you must make. Each of us is called to reflect the compassion and generosity of Jesus, who gave his very life for us. We are called to be good stewards of all the many blessings God has bestowed on us. That is true discipleship. It means God asks us to use our blessings well, to help others, to share our bounty so that our wealth, however large or small, does good for God and returns to God with increase. Giving should be a sacrifice, but only you can decide. One thing is certain. Our God promises that our generosity will be returned to us many times over in ways that will delight us.

You will be able to make your gift online at www.dor.org, by clicking on Give On- Line. There you will also be able to view a video about this year’s appeal. The Catholic Ministries Appeal helps to bring service and help to so many people throughout our diocese, but it takes the support of us all to make it possible. Please prayerfully consider making your gift, whether large or small each gift is needed to help us reach our parish goal and to help our diocese to continue to grow in faith and minister to God’s people. Please also pray the following prayer for the success of this year’s ap-peal. Thank you for your faithfulness and generosity.

O God, our loving Creator and giver of all good gifts, bless our parishes, strengthen our faith and grant us the spirit of Christian Stew-ardship so that we may give generously of our time, talent and treasure to the building of Your Kingdom here in our church and

throughout the world We pray for your help in achieving success in this campaign, so that we can help others throughout the diocese. This we ask through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, One God, now and forever. Amen.
