Senior Warden A word about Communications: I want to increase and revitalize our presence in our community and make the whole Denton area aware of how special St Barnabas is and why they should come join us on our new journey. To do that we need to update our social media presence via our web site, Facebook, and in print media. I am looking for members of our parish who would like to assist me in that effort. If you have ideas to share or would like to participate in a committee, please contact me via email at [email protected], or call me at 214-693-3995 Hospitality is our internal outreach Please participate and volunteer. Hospitality is our internal outreach to our internal community, our parish family. We need everyone to be include, and that means participation in whatever way, and to whatever extent you feel able. We need people to act as hosts for major receptions and events, and also to make sure there is always a snack or treat for everyone, following each of the Sunday services. What better way to welcome visitors than to be able to offer then a light snack and conversation over a cup of coffee. Please contact me if you are willing to be a coffee hour host, which does not mean you have to provide all the snacks and clean up, but at a minimum ask some of your friends to help you. A Bit of Church History Emerges On a recent Tuesday morning just after the Eucharist, St. Barnabas had three special visitors. George Hubbard, who lives in Krum, stopped by the church with his nephew Randy Paine and Randy’s wife. The Paines and Mr. Hubbard were headed to see family in Austin, but they stopped by St. Barnabas -- where Mr. Hubbard had been an active member many years ago –on their way. While here he asked to see “the lantern dedicated to my mother,” Alice Bertha Altizer Hubbard. When Mr. Hubbard confirmed that it was wrought iron (he said he had an old photo at home) I was pretty sure I knew what he was describing. The lantern is the one which is just outside the red door facing Second Street. Mrs. Hubbard and her family were early members of St. Barnabas, and when she died in 1947, The Rev. Homer Rogers (then rector of St. Barnabas, and always known affectionately as “Padre”) presided at her requiem. The lantern dedicated to her is one of the ties between St. Barnabas and what is now Texas Woman’s University. Mrs. Hubbard’s husband, Dr. L. H. Hubbard, was the president of the college back when it was known as the Texas State College for Women. Recently, I found the plaque that goes with the lantern, and we can look forward to having both installed at our new building in the not too distant future! In Christ, Fr. Don Johnson+ April 2018

CRAFTY HEARTS/OUTREACH The group will meet on April 2nd and 16th at 1:00 p.m. All parishioners are welcome. The Lenten outreach project benefiting the Denton Community Food Center brought in 511 pounds of non-perishable food items. Thank you for such an enthusiastic response to this ongoing need in our community. Tom Newell, the executive director at the Food Center, spoke at our March 19th meeting. Here is a sampling of information that Tom shared with us: the Center occupies 3,500 sq. feet of space at 109 W. Sycamore; the Center serves roughly 25 – 40 families per day; there is a financial qualification (for example, $40,000 for a family of four); applicants/clients may request food six times each calendar year, no more than once per month; food distribution is scaled according to family size; the Center purchases 52% of the food from the Tarrant Area Food Bank (a $10 donation can purchase $60-$70 worth of food); 48% comes from food drives or direct food donations. The April outreach project will be a monetary collection for Father Johnson’s discretionary fund. Father uses this fund to provide emergency assistance to persons in need of such things as prescription drugs, rent or utilities. Please remember the year round outreach projects: Back the Blue – Collection of snack items for the Denton Police Resource Officers. Place donated items in the Back the Blue box at the rear door of the parish hall. CASA Birthday Party Packs A year round outreach project to benefit children in foster care through CASA of Denton County (Court Appointed Special Advocate Association). Consider celebrating your birthday by donating a birthday pack to CASA volunteers. The birthday packs are like a portable birthday party for children ages 1 – 18. You pick the target age and gender (or genderless-Mickey Mouse, Cars, etc.) The items should accommodate 12 – 16 guests. Check out the sample pack and list of suggested items on display in the parish hall. Use the list of suggested items or your own ideas to create a party in a bag or make a donation and we will do the shopping for you. Thank you Pat Kindrick, Betty Kay Seibt and Billie Bennett for donating party packs in March! Hospitality Your parish needs your help! The vestry is requesting each of you to participate whenever, however, and as often as you can. To be more specific here is where we need your help.

• Weekly coffee hour – please bring a light snack to share with others, and volunteer to do cleanup after the 11 AM coffee hour at least once or twice a year. We have the expectation that you can be finished with this by 1:15 PM

• Host a major event reception such as after the Christmas Eve service, or the St. Barnabas Day parish Picnic. We do not expect you to furnish all the food or to do all the work, but primarily

act as the point person to make sure there is enough food and drink, as well as table decorations when desired. There are many people who can guide and support you, just reach out to any member of the vestry if you wish to volunteer.

We will be posting the major events throughout the year, and be sending out email notices reminding everyone when we are in need of a host and or hostess for up coming events. There will be a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board in the parish hall for kitchen cleanup, please try to take at least one Sunday a quarter, or pitch in anytime. Please email me: [email protected] or call 214-693-3995 if you are able to assist in this important mission. Confirmation Anyone—adult or teen—who is interested in Confirmation at the next Diocesan Confirmation in June, please talk to Fr. Johnson or Betty Kay Seibt about organizing a class. ([email protected])

A Word from the Treasurer

Since assuming the position of Vestry Treasurer after the Annual Parish meeting on February 11th, we have implemented a new online accounting system called Realm. Realm is the cloud-based system of ACS Technologies who have been our software company for church accounting for a number of years. We are now really getting adept at using the new system since going live on Realm March 2nd. However, as useful as accounting is for letting us know where we stand financially, it cannot change the facts on the ground. This is where all of us come in by meeting our financial pledges in a regular and timely manner. We are currently running a bit short on the revenue side while the expense side is well in hand staying below budget. So I encourage everyone who pledged this year to try to pay your pledge throughout the year rather than waiting to pay a number of months at once. Pledges with no payment activity for several months are hard to count on. Remember we have expenses all year, not just at year-end and late giving increases the stress on our financial management. Please try to keep this in mind as you make your financial plans this year. Thank you, Nick Bennett Building Project Update The foundation work is well underway. We have had several days lost due to rain, but in Texas we never complain about rain. The piers are all in place (factoid – each one is a depth of 23 feet), all the grade beams have all been formed up to the ¾ point, with the reinforcing steel to be placed very soon, and the interior side of the forms installed, at which point the concrete will be poured. The pouring of the slab will follow soon thereafter. I fully expect to see the slab in place by the end of this month. While digging the grade bean trenches the workers uncovered the remains of an old building foundation. I rescued one of the bricks to save for our achieves.

Educated: A Memoir By Tara Westover

Tara Westover wasn’t your garden-variety college student. When the Holocaust was mentioned in a history class, she didn’t know what it was (no, really). That’s because she didn’t see the inside of a classroom until the age of seventeen. Public education was one of the many things her religious fanatic father was dubious of, believing it a means for the government to brainwash its gullible citizens, and her mother wasn’t diligent on the homeschooling front. If it wasn’t for a brother who managed to extricate himself from their isolated—and often dangerous--world, Westover might still be in rural Idaho, trying to survive her survivalist upbringing. It’s a miraculous story she tells in her memoir Educated. For those of us who took our educations for granted, who occasionally fell asleep in large lecture halls (and inconveniently small ones), it’s hard to grasp the level of grit—not to mention intellect—required to pull off what Westover did. But eventually earning a PhD from Cambridge University may have been the easy part, at least compared to what she had to sacrifice to attain it. The courage it took to make that sacrifice was the truest indicator of how far she’d come, and how much she’d learned. Educated is an inspiring reminder that knowledge is, indeed, power. April 30, 7 p.m. in the Parish Hall Join us for discussion and fellowship
