Department of Art Education and Art History
Faculty: Lauren Cross Dr. Lauren Cross, Senior Lecturer in Interdisciplinary Art and Design Studies, received an award from UNT’s Career Connect program for her work with IADS students. Dr. Cross was recognized at a ceremony on April 18, 2019. Nadine Kalin Dr. Nadine Kalin, Associate Professor of Art Education, will be recognized by art education BFA student Hannah Loveland as the faculty member who has been a source of support and inspiration at Honors Day. Dr. Kalin was also nominated as UNT Graduate Faculty Mentor of the Year (2019). Tyson Lewis Tyson Lewis has mentored a McNair Scholar, studio art student Julie Do, to a first place award for her research presentation at UNT's Scholars Day. Nada Shabout Dr. Nada Shabout, Professor of Art History, is serving as advisor to the curator of the Saudi Arabian pavilion at the Venice Biennale. The pavilion will feature land artist Zahrah Al Ghamdi and is located in the Arsenale. Nada is mentoring curator Eiman Elgibreen of Princess Nourah University. The Venice Biennale is the premier global event for contemporary art. Alumni: Alumna Amanda Alison (PhD Art Education) Alumna Amanda Alison (PhD Art Education) is associate professor of art and coordinator of the art education program at Texas Christian University. She and her students are featured in the article “Using Art to Treat Illness and Trauma,” in the TCU research magazine. Shauna Brazel (BFA Visual Art Studies) Shauna Brazel, graduate of the UNT Visual Art Studies program and current MA Art Education student, and 5 year art teacher at Creek Valley MS, Lewisville ISD, was voted her campus teacher of the year. She will be honored at the LISD annual awards banquet on April 26th. Bevin Butler (MA Art History) Bevin Butler presented her lecture “Weaving the Wounds of Christ” at the church of St. Michael’s Episcopal in Cookville TN. Bevin explained tapestry production and the state of women’s monasticism in the late Middle Ages. The talk was an overview of the devotional opportunities presented to nuns at St Katherine’s in Nuremberg tasked with weaving the Last Judgment Tapestry around 1450. I explored nuns participating in affective devotional scenarios as “Doubting Thomas” as they inserted their fingers and bobbins through the wound in Christ’s side, or acting as persecutor in which case their pointed tapestry bobbins wrapped in blood‐red wool pierced the cloth as the instruments of the passion pierced Christ’s skin, or even as a healer and caregiver like Mary Magdalene treating Christ’s body for entombment. This tapestry serves as one of many examples through which nuns
exercised agency and autonomy as they negotiated their own devotional opportunities through the production of liturgical textiles. Deven Kirby (BA Art History) Alumna Deven Kirby (BA Art History), who will attend the MA program in Decorative Arts and Design History at George Washington University this fall, was awarded the Daughters of the American Revolution scholarship to support her studies. Kelley Quinn McGee (BFA Visual Art Studies) Alumna Kelley Quinn McGee (BFA Visual Art Studies), art teacher Adkins Elementary in Lantana (Denton ISD), was named teacher of the year at her school and was recognized at a ceremony at Denton ISD on April 17. Doyle Rader (BA Art History) Alumnus Doyle Rader (BA Art History), published his article, “Thank You, Dirk” in D Magazine. Doyle writes about the Dallas Mavericks, NBA, WNBA, and NBA 2K League for Forbes SportsMoney. He is also editor for Mavs Moneyball, the Dallas Mavericks blog on the SB Nation network. The D Magazine article celebrates the career of Dallas Mavericks player Dirk Nowitski, who retired this year. In addition to being a basketball writer and fan, Doyle is Manager of ShopDMA.org and Retail Operations Lead at Dallas Museum of Art.

Interior Design Senior Show 2019 UNT Interior Design Senior Show The Interior Design Senior Show is an annual design showcase of senior students’ evidence‐based final projects which are, not limited to, residential, commercial, hospitality, and healthcare design. Fashion Group International (FGI) Scholarship Competition 2019 On Friday, April 12th, the UNT Fashion Design students participated in the annual Fashion Group International Scholarship Competition at the Dallas Market Center. The keynote speaker for the event was Ken Downing. 146 designs were submitted to the competition and 50 were selected to walk the runway. Thirteen universities were represented and UNT had a total of 15 garments (out of the 50) walk the runway. 7 UNT designs were also featured in a mounted exhibit. Students were presented with several awards for excellence in design. The University of North Texas excelled once again this year receiving the following awards and the faculty in the Fashion Design department congratulate the following students:

Faculty: Michael Gibson Professor Michael Gibson of UNT CVAD’s Communication Design area was invited to Oklahoma State University April 4–6 to make a presentation titled “Exploring a Small Myriad of Ways to Frame and Set So‐Called ‘Design Problems’,”and to serve an external assessor for their undergraduate and graduate Graphic Design and User Experience Design programs. Professor Gibson also served as the juror for an exhibition of Graphic and User Experience Design work designed by OSU’s 2019 graduating cohort of undergraduate students. He will write an assessment document in June that will help guide future curricular planning in and around Graphic and User Experience Design education at OSU.
Douglas May has been awarded a silver medal in the 2020 Graphis Poster Annual Competition for his Build Green poster design for the Visual Information Design Association of Korea. Graphis publishes the work of exceptional talent in Design, Advertising, Photography and Art/Illustration. The Graphis tradition continues, presenting award‐winning international work from 1944 to the present in digital and print.
Douglas May also had a project accepted by Graphis Poster 2020 as honorable mention.

David Wolske’s letterpress and experimental typography print, Angle Chase No. 1, was selected from among hundreds of national submissions by juror, Christina Rees, Editor‐in‐Chief at Glasstire, for inclusion CASPFEST. Presented by Charles Adams Studio Project, CASPFEST is an inaugural two‐night festival of art, film, and music, which aims to showcase exceptional contemporary arts from around the county. Angle Chase No. 1 will be on view April 26th through April 27th, at the 5&J Gallery in Lubbock, Texas.

Box Truck/Microwave Queen Tour Tuesday, April 23, 2019 ART Courtyard Artists: Sofia Caetano and Eliot Sheedy Description: Queen of Discomfort™ presents a multimedia installation in a touring, box truck gallery. POISON GARDEN includes landscapes of expanded paintings: video collages of remixed VHS are projected on mylar paper and acrylic paint. The visitor wears a projection helmet ‐ just like miners use a lit‐up helmet for substance‐hunting, visitors wear a helmet for truth‐digging. The digital body of the host Fatty Con Fetti (non‐material guru) will be projected out of the helmet. Fatty introduces the viewers to her iterations of contemporary flowers for POISON GARDEN. These poisonous flowers propose the corrupted fragrance of toxic elements present in our everyday lives. At the end of the gallery is a hidden, dark room. Inside, the visitor uses the helmet’s light to investigate Fatty Con Fetti’s precious digital prints of POISON GARDEN. Students: Lara Asam MFA student, Lara Asam, presented a new immersive installation in the Cave on April 22, 2019, that she developed this semester. This work explores public verses private spaces, and the secrets we share in them. Through the use of light and sound combined with stylized façade walls that fuse two cultures to create a space of interaction for viewers. Her materials include CNC routed cedar panels, satin gold textiles, and laser cut wood inlays.

Nicole Blostein Venus 1, 2 & 3 Exhibition | April 19‐25, 2019 Project Space: Alcove (ART 355) In this experimental, four‐channel video, the artist uses one of her alter egos who appears in much of her content. Through the use of green screen and rear projection, a series of videos and gifs of the alter ego can be seen interacting with both herself, and virtual renditions of herself, as if trapped inside of a digital world. Referencing iconic poses that emulate female goddesses and deities seen in classic renaissance paintings, a narration on privacy and female online portrayal, Nicole layers social media advertisements with her virtual avatar.

James Thurman James Thurman was the guest demonstrator for the Hunt County Woodturners on Thursday, April 11, 2019 in Greenville,Texas. His demonstration,“Metal Spinning for Woodturners,” covered basic techniques of how to utilize a woodturning lathe for metal spinning, including proper safety, tool design, material choices, and form development. Based on the increasing interest of the larger national
woodturning field, James is currently coordinating production and sale of metal spinning tools. Texas Fashion Collection In FY2019, the TFC has served 2263 people in tours, research appointments, and lectures. 4/11: CVAD Visiting Assistant Professor Gustavo Plascencia’s photography students mounted photographs that they took of TFC artifacts using large format cameras. This exhibition was the culmination of a behind‐the‐scenes tour, six hours of student studio sessions (see photo), and students mounting their photographs alongside the TFC garments mounted in the new student study center. 4/13: The TFC hosted professional staff from the McNay Art Museum in San Antonio, which is leading up to a collaborative exhibition featuring TFC artifacts. 4/17: CVAD Associate Dean Denise Baxter and TFC Director Annette Becker lead the professional development session “Dress Code Violations” at the Costume Society of America’s annual symposium in Seattle, WA. Session panelists shared their experiences forming and advocating for collaborative research, with a focus on connecting the academy and the archive/museum.
