Senior Warden I would like to thank the parish family for the great attendance at the Annual Parish Meeting on the 27 th of January. We elected 2 new vestry members; Susan Westphal and Susan Heckman, as well as 2 delegates to the Diocesan Convention; Carol and David Foote. Building construction is progressing on schedule, as is the development of a new web site. We are considering producing a new picture directory for St Barnabas, and would like your feedback if you would support that idea. Please send me an email if you agree with that project and/or if you are willing to help produce it. John Seibt Sr. Warden Altar Guild Due to the new format for the Annual Parish Meeting, which I agree with, the Altar Guild was not recognized. These Ladies are Billie Bennett, Zan Clay, Maureen Saringer, Patti Martin, Carol Foote, Mary Arndt, Janie Cindric and Pat Kindrick. They are very devoted in their Ministry of service to the Church. I would like to recognize and thank them for this. We are looking forward to the upcoming Lenten season and moving into the new building. What a beautiful time it will be. Anyone interested in what we do or joining us, please contact Father Johnson or Pat Kindrick. Pat Kindrick Altar Guild Director Lay Ministry "I would like to welcome and announce a new member to our lay ministry - Beth Miksa. Beth comes to us with many years of experience in lay ministry service from her previous church - Grace St. Paul's - Tucson, AZ. She will be assisting as a Lay Eucharist Minister at our 11:00am service. We are truly thankful to Beth and her interest in serving within our church. Please welcome Beth and thank her for her service. We welcome any other church members who would like to serve within our lay ministry at either service. We could really use additional LEM help at the 8:30am service. For the 11:00am service, additional help is especially needed either as a LEM, Usher, Crucifer, Thurifer, or Torch Bearer. We have lost several people over the last couple of years which has meant not being able to have torch bearers and a Thurifer regularly. It has also put many of our current lay ministry in a position to serve several times a month and sometimes doing two roles in one service. Our current lay ministry never complains, but I am sure they would welcome some additional help to share the load. If you are interested in serving, please contact Dee Wilson at either [email protected] or 940-595- 8734. Training will be provided for all positions. Dee Wilson February 2019

Outreach Thank you to all who contributed generously to our January Outreach Project. We collected 56 pounds of assorted hygiene items and socks. Additionally, the monetary donations amounted to $471.00.

The February collection will benefit Monsignor King Outreach Center. The mission of the center is to render emergency assistance, care and comfort to members of the Denton County community who are experiencing homelessness by providing shelter, a nourishing meal and supportive services in collaboration with other community agencies. We will collect coffee, creamer, sugar and sweetener (no individual packets please). A few members of the outreach committee will serve a meal at the shelter on February 19th. Cost of the meal will come from the Outreach Fund. After a discussion at the January meeting, the Outreach Committee decided on the following projects for 2019.

St. Barnabas’ Outreach to the Community

2019 January - Our Daily Bread February - Msgr. King Outreach Center March - Denton Community Food Center April - Denton Community Food Center

May - Meals on Wheels June - Denton State Supported Living Ctr. July - TBA August - Denton Christian Preschool September - Episcopal Relief and Development October - Fall Bazaar November - Ann’s Haven December - Adopt a family CRAFTY HEARTS Members of the Crafty Hearts group who knit and crochet are creating infant hats and garments for the “NOW I LAY ME DOWN TO SLEEP,” a non-profit organization to help parents who are experiencing an early infant loss. Kate Crissman recently presented information to us about the organization and the need for these tiny garments. Lost and Found Are these your glasses? They’re readers that light up. They’ve been hiding out in the office for a while. If they are yours, talk to Michelle. !

Adkins Family Window Update Dear Parish Family, Many thanks to those of you who have already contributed to the fund for Adkins Family Window. We are still accepting donations for this fund, so if you would like to contribute, but haven’t yet, or if you would like to make an additional contribution, please make your check payable to St. Barnabas with the notation “Adkins Family Window” in the memo line, and submit your check to the parish office. Thanks to your generosity, the fund is moving toward the $3000 mark, and we have enough to make the 25% down payment that will initiate the fabrication of the window; the full amount needed for the window’s completion and installation is just over $7000. Our parish has many opportunities for donations presently, but we welcome all donations—both large and small—to this beautiful addition to our new building, an addition that will honor an entire family of musicians who have contributed so much to our parish for over 50 years.

The design for the window (shown above) features St. Cecilia, the patron saint of music, with representative organ pipes and a viol—these instruments are associated both with St. Cecilia and with the Adkins Family—and will also feature the music and text of Alis’s favorite hymn, “For All the Saints,” across the top of the window. Additionally, the artist creating the window, Christie A. Wood of Denton, has worked closely with the Adkins Window Committee to incorporate both purples and teals—Alis’s favorite colors—as well as colors that will mirror those used in the Rose Window to be installed at the front of the new building and our existing side windows. If you have questions about the window or the fund, please contact Anne Schoolfield or another member of the Adkins Family Window Committee (Carol Foote, Cecile Johnson, Emanda Johnson, and Bill Joyner). !

Rose Window Update Construction on Rose Window is moving forward. All of the glass pieces have been cut and as you can see from the photo they are arranged into their final positions. The next step will be the etching on each individual piece to create the stars and other effects. We are hoping for an installation by mid-March !

St. Barnabas Book Club February’s selection:

The Woman in Cabin 10 By Ruth Ware

In this tightly wound, enthralling story reminiscent of Agatha Christie’s works, Lo Blacklock, a journalist who writes for a travel magazine, has just been given the assignment of a lifetime: a week on a luxury cruise with only a handful of cabins. The sky is clear, the waters calm, and the veneered, select guests jovial as the exclusive cruise ship, the Aurora, begins her voyage in the picturesque North Sea. At first, Lo’s stay is nothing but pleasant: the cabins are plush, the dinner parties are sparkling, and the guests are elegant. But as the week wears on, frigid winds whip the deck, gray skies fall, and Lo witnesses what she can only describe as a dark and terrifying nightmare: a woman being thrown overboard. The problem? All passengers remain accounted for—and so, the ship sails on as if nothing has happened, despite Lo’s desperate attempts to convey that something (or someone) has gone terribly, terribly wrong… With surprising twists, spine-tingling turns, and a setting that proves as uncomfortably claustrophobic as it is eerily beautiful, Ruth Ware offers up another taut and intense read in The Woman in Cabin 10—one that will leave even the most sure-footed reader restlessly uneasy long after the last page is turned.

Join us for discussion and fellowship Back The Blue Some children are going to school hungry. The School Resource Officers (SRO) maintain a supply of snacks in their offices. This is a two fold program, first of course feeding those in need and secondly it gives the SROs an opportunity to interact with the children helping them with any problems that they might be experiencing at school or home. Currently I am delivering food to Billy Ryan High School, Guyrer High School, Denton High School and Stickland Middle School on a monthly basis or as requested. Items needed are individual microwaveable servings, snack crackers, fruit cups, protein bars, cup of soup, mac and cheese, any kind of finger foods and bottle water. Please consider picking up a few items when you do your weekly grocery shopping. If you prefer, I would be glad to shop for you Please remember the Ramen Noodles must be the ones that are cups not packaged, because the SROs don’t have bowls in their offices. If you have any questions please give me a call at 940-703-0333, or email me at [email protected]. I am thanking you in advance for your help on this project. Regards, Betty Peters
