FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Last week the Prep students went on an excursion to places in the local community which links to their
inquiry unit ‘Our Co-operative Community’. They visited the Manningham Recycling Centre, the
Manningham Library, the Performing Arts Centre and met up with the Mayor of Manningham, Jennifer
Yang. They learnt a lot about what happens in the community and how the community works together.
The Year 1 students had an incursion ‘Tiddalick the Frog’ which is a Dreamtime story and links in with
Drama and the Year 1 Inquiry Unit – How We Express Ourselves. The Year 1 inquiry central idea is:
Through the Arts people use different forms of expression to demonstrate their uniqueness as a human
being. This drama presentation demonstrated a way of expressing a story and the students enjoyed it.
This week some of the Year 3-6 students have participated in Hoop time which is a basketball round
robin competition between schools.
PRINCIPAL FOR A DAY It was fantastic to have Cr Jennifer Yang, the Mayor of
Manningham, spend last Monday at Milgate PS learning about
schools and how they operate. Cr Yang talked to the student
School Leaders and House Leaders. She talked to the Preps
about being a Mayor, the Manningham Council and answered
their questions about the local community.
YEAR 6 STUDENTS PYP EXHIBITION Last week the Year 6 students presented their PYP Exhibition. They had been working hard over a
number of weeks on their PYP exhibition – a collaborative inquiry in groups based on the central idea
of ‘One Nation can have Global Impact’. The students had to devise their own lines of inquiry
depending on their area of focus. They had investigated a variety of areas such as: oil distribution,
palm oil production, export of meat products and global education. It was a fantastic celebration of their
learning and many parents and friends came to view their work. The students were able to talk about
what they have learnt. Their presentations and their learning were outstanding. The students were so
enthusiastic, engaged and challenged in their learning throughout the process. Congratulations to the
Year 6 teachers and the students. Thank you also to all the teachers who had been mentors for each of
the PYP Year 6 groups guiding them throughout their inquiries.
MANNINGHAM PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION The students in all year levels have been preparing and presenting speeches on various topics in
preparation for selection to compete in the Manningham schools Public Speaking Competition. Four
students will be selected from the levels across the school to go to the Manningham Public Speaking
competition in September.
CHINESE STUDENT VISIT 7 – 11 OCTOBER MEETING FOR INTERESTED PARENTS Thank you to the families who have volunteered to host our Chinese students when they visit Milgate
from 7-11 October. On Monday 26 August at 7pm there will be a meeting for the host families and any
other parents who are interested to find out about the visit and about hosting a Chinese student. Even if
you are not hosting one this time, you may like to find out about it and perhaps host a student on their
next visit. When the Chinese teachers and students visit we will be asking parents to assist with
providing lunch for the teachers / students each day. This would be on a roster basis during the five
days they are here. Last year when we had the Principal and four teachers visiting from our sister
school, the parents were very generous in giving their time and providing lunches for our visitors. It was
a wonderful community event. We will also require parents who are able to speak Chinese and English
who would be willing to act as interpreters. If you are able to assist with any of these things, please
contact the school office or come to the meeting on Monday night.
UNIVERSITY OF NSW ICAS TESTS – SPELLING AND WRITING On Monday at assembly, the ICAS results were announced. A number of our Year 3-6 students did
extremely well in the ICAS Spelling and Writing tests. Some students achieved High Distinctions,
Distinctions and quite a number achieved Credits. Congratulations to all students on these
achievements and to all who participated.
CYBER SAFETY On Tuesday night there was a parent evening on Cyber safety at the school. We had a small but
enthusiastic group of parents who came to find out about how to assist their children to keep safe on
the Internet. Thank you to Claire Harvey-Beavis and Karlie Gooding for a very informative session. The
PowerPoint presentation is available on the school website. Parents are encouraged to view this. There
are also many resources in regard to cyber safety. Claire and Karlie have put together a list of these
which are also available on our website.

WORKING BEE … THIS SUNDAY 9.30AM – 12.00PM The main aim of our working bee is to replant the garden beds around the Year 3/4 building. We have
over two hundred and fifty grasses, trees and shrubs to plant so the gardens should look fantastic by
the time we finish. A big thank you must go to Carolyn Drew who has donated close to one hundred
plants to our working bees this year. At the completion of the working bee we will have a sausage
sizzle with all the families involved.
If you would like to assist at the working bee and you have not RSVP’d please feel welcome to just
come along on Sunday morning. It would be great if you could bring a shovel and rake to use. I will
order some extra sausages just in case.

Year 5 - How We Express Ourselves
We were looking at street art. We enjoyed
researching famous street artists including, Banksy
and Leonardo Da Vinci. We found it difficult to pick
the colours and fonts as well as putting the piece
together. We chose to write ‘YOLO’ because ‘You
Only Live Once’, so don't risk your life doing
something silly! Samir, Jason and James
We decided to research the art form of
sculpture because we wanted to be
creative and we also wanted it to be
3D. We made this art piece out of
plasticine because we wanted to make
food and a dining table. We used
toothpicks to make the detailed parts
and our hands to get the right shape.
We went to each other's house to
make this and then we finished it at
school. We got inspiration from
pictures of mini food plates that we
found during our research.
Audrey, Carly and Jennifer
We focused on street art and graffiti. For this piece, we chose stencils because it was something new that
we haven't done before. We enjoyed doing this
topic because we got to go to Hosier Lane in the city.
We also enjoyed researching about famous
artists like Banksy and Eduardo Kobra because
we like their artwork. Adam, Kyle and Jarryd
A still from Monique’s
Contortion video.
Spiro and
Dimitri’s
street art
piece,
‘Attitude’.
Year 5’s created positive messages for the ‘Expression Wall’.
Enviroweek As part of our Inquiry into Ecosystems, Year 4 students have decided to take action and make a pledge for Enviroweek on 25th - 31st August. We are taking on the Sparky Challenge and reducing our energy use. The Year 4 students would like to invite everyone to make a pledge and reduce their ecological footprint. The students made posters advertising Enviroweek and Emelie P [4RW] won the competition. Here is her winning poster:

On Wednesday 14 August 2013 the Preps embarked on a tour of parts of our local Manningham area to find out about the services our council provides. This excursion supported our investigation titled “Our Co-operative Community” which aims to give the children an understanding that we are all responsible for creating a safe and supportive community.
One of the places we visited was the Banyule Re-think Recycling Centre in Banksia St Heidelberg. Although technically not in Manningham, our visit was funded by our council through their Waste Education Officer Linda Kenworthy.
We were also given a tour of the council’s MC2 building that included the Art Gallery, Art Studio, Dance Studio and Library. We would like to thank our Mayor Jennifer Yang, gallery curator Megan McEvoy and Librarian Laura for making time for our visit.
STOP! Please read this,
it's for a mural.
We are a group of Year 5 students working on a special mural for our school.
We need your help in collecting outdoor house paints to use.
If you have some leftover paint at home please bring it in and put it in the box outside the office.
Please put your name and grade on it if you would like it back, or just to count it in the competition.
If there is some paint left over we will return it when we have finished our masterpiece!
The competition is between every grade to bring in the most pots and the largest variety of
colours.
Thank you!

CHOCOLATE AND HERB DRIVE UPDATE It was all hands on deck on Friday as the P&F finalised the chocolate and herb orders, and distributed
them to the classrooms. We had plenty of parent help and we were even assisted by some little hands
and little paws - Mac the disability dog was a terrific supervisor and special thanks to Emma T and
Sophie B.
Just a reminder that we have allowed a 4 week selling period however parents can send in the total
amount of the chocolate box revenue ($50; or the total amount of the herb/veggie bag revenue $60) any
time they choose. Families are then guaranteed an entry into the Milgate Green Ticket raffle and can
sell the products at their leisure without the pressure to finalise sales by the closing date.
In addition, we have ordered a couple of spare boxes of chocolates, available to people who sell their
boxes/bags early, and who want more – please ask at the office. Remember, each complete box/bag
sold earns a ticket in the raffle!
Finally, a reminder that all money is due back at school no later than Friday 13th September. Money
received after this time will be gladly accepted, but tickets to the raffle will not be allocated after this date
– the raffle will be drawn at assembly on Monday 16th September.
FATHER’S DAY WRAPPING WORKSHOP & STALLS If you would like to help out on the Father’s Day stall and haven’t already done so,
please send in your flyers asap. The stalls will be held on Thursday 29th and Friday
30th August - parents helping on those days are sure to be in for plenty of smiles
and giggles watching the kids choose something special for Dad. As with the
Mother’s Day stall, items are $5ea and children are invited to shop again on the
Friday morning there are any gifts left over.
THE CCC IS OFF AND RUNNING! The Milgate Copying and Counting Crew is off and running and we’ve had a great response from parents
who would like to occasionally help out the P&F, without the pressure of coming along to regular
meetings. We are still accepting members, so please send in your flyers to the office if you’d like to help
out.
