Objective
Use patterns to develop expressions or equations
Translate sentences into equations
REMINDER: POW Cell Phones DUE THURSDAY
Defining Variable “Let” statement
Let x = ? Let x = any number, what expression can you
write for 3 times the number? Let x = any number, what expression can you
write for 3 times a number, increased by 5? Let x = any number, what equations can you
write for the sentence, three times a number, increased by 5, is 13?
STEPS (Translate Sentences into Equations)
Three steps to writing a two-step equation WORDS: Describe the situation. Use only the
most important words. VARIABLE: Define a variable to represent the
unknown quantity. EQUATION: Translate your verbal model into
an algebraic expression or equation.
Practice
A group of friends has decided to go to the aquarium together. Each person pays $7.50 to get in. They spend a total of $40 for the shark exhibit in addition to their tickets. The total cost is $70. How many people went to the aquarium?
Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?
At a restaurant in Meridian 4 people can sit comfortably around a dining table, one on each side. If you push two tables together six people can fit. What if you pushed together 3 tables end to end? 7 tables? 30 tables? Find a way to figure out the number of people at 57 tables or 213 tables or any number of tables. Demonstrate several strategies.
4 different ways to solve
1. Picture2. Table/Chart3. Graph4. Equation/Expression
Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner
What if 14 people can fit around a table, 5 each on two sides and two on each end? How many people would fit around 9
tables? 62 tables? 213 tables or any number of tables? What will you change with your strategies and what will remain the same?
Writing 2 step equations
(p. 129) You want to attend a two-week sports camp that costs $700. Your parents will pay the deposit of $400 if you pay the rest in weekly payments of $15. Use the questions below to help you find the number of weeks you will need to make payments.
1) Complete the table below. How much is paid after 2, 3, and 4 weeks?
2) It will take a long time to solve the problem with a table. Instead, write and solve an equation to find the number of payments p you will need to make.
3) How many payments will you make?
4) Suppose you received $75 in birthday money that you want to use towards the camp. Write and solve an equation to find the number of payments p you will need to make.
