    INTRODUCTION

    ComplacencyCataclysms, disasters, catastrophes, crises, calamities, and emergencies.

    Theyhappenmoreoftenthanwedlike. Theycanrangeanywherefromamajor

    earthquake,toablizzard,toanuncontrolledwildfire, toa localizedhouse fire.

    Thebestwaytosurviveanycalamity istobeprepared. Buthowdoesonego

    aboutpreparingforwhoknowswhat?

    Itallseemssoambiguousand farremoved fromwherewe liveourdaily

    lives. Wegetup,takethekidstoschool,gotowork,comehome,eat,watcha

    littleTV,gotobedanddoitagainthenextday(withafewvacationsthrownin

    forgoodmeasure). Inourowncomfortableroutines,wearelulledintoasense

    ofcocoonedsafetywhichleadstocomplacency.

    But then something happens a flood that wipes you out overnight.

    Perhaps

    a

    tornado

    rips

    through,

    or

    a

    hurricane

    (like

    the

    now

    infamous

    Katrina),

    andyourealizemorefullyhowquicklyanemergencycanarise.

    ThebizarreicestormthatcoveredNortheasternOklahomainDecemberof

    2007 lefthundredsofthousandswithoutpowerforaweekormore infreezing

    weather. Fewwereprepared.

    In July2008,amajor flood tookouta largeportionof Iowaanda small

    part

    of

    Illinois.

    Hundreds

    of

    thousands

    of

    people

    lost

    power

    and

    it

    was

    a

    week

    or

    morebefore itwasrestored. Waterfilledhomesforcedpeopletoflee. There

    wasnodrinkingwaterbecauseofcontamination. Thesewerswerefloodedout.

    Whenthepeopleneededitthemost,therewerenoFEMAtruckssoothershad

    tostepintohelp.

    Afewmonths later,HurricaneIkehittheTexasgulfcoastanddevastated

    theareaincludingmostofthecoastalcityofGalveston. Again,nopowerandall

    systemsthatwetakeforgrantedweredisrupted.

    Before the Chaos

    Duringacrisis,youmightnothavethetimeorresources,norwillyoubein

    therightframeofmindtoconsidereverythingthatyouneedto.Thisreiterates

    the importance ofmakingwellthought out plans and storing supplies before

    disaster hits and youre surrounded by chaos. Therefore, you need to take

    precautionsnowbeforeitstoolate.

    Its not an easy thing to know how to

    prepareforadisasterforthesimplefactthatthey

    areallsodissimilar. Onthesurface, itseemsan

    exercise in futility. Who knows what might

    happen? Or when? And who can do any

    preparationatallwhenawildfireisbearingdown

    onyourhomeora tornadohits? However,just

    because you cantprepare forall,doesntmean

    youshouldntprepareforany.

    CHAPTER ONESTART SMALL AND WORK UP

    Well Thought Out PlanYoursurvivalplanneedstobewellthoughtoutanditneedstobeflexible.

    Willyoubeforcedtoevacuate? Orwillyoubetrappedinyourhomesuchas

    inthecaseofanicestormorblizzard? Somedisastersspellshorttermsurvival

    tactics,othersmaymeanlongterm. Stillothersmaymoveyouintoanentirely

    differentsurvivalmodesuchasthecaseofnuclearorchemicalwarfare.

    Lets say a train carrying toxic chemicals

    nearyourhomehasderailed,andyouhavebeen

    ordered to evacuate. This happens suddenly,

    right in themiddle of a normal day. Whatwill

    youneed to takewithyouandhowquickly can

    yougetthingsputtogether?

    Doyouhaveaccesstoakitwith insurance

    papers,prescriptions,birthcertificates,passports

    andother importantpapers?Doyouhavecash?

    Isyourfueltankfulland ifso,howfarcouldyou

    Nooneenjoys imagining theworst. Perhapsyouveattended the latest

    disaster

    type

    movie.

    But

    even

    then,

    you

    can

    come

    out

    of

    the

    darkened

    theater

    into the light of reality once its over. Thats as far asmost of us allow our

    thinking togo. Itsunpleasant indeed to realizehowvulnerableweare. Our

    lives are replete with multitudes of conveniences; from heat and light and

    running water, to washers, dryers, and automatic garage door openers. We

    neverreallythinkofhowmuchwehaveuntilthedayitallgoesaway. Thenwe

    realizewe should have thought past to thewaywe live today towhat living

    mightbeliketomorrow.

    It goes back to the old fable of the grasshopper and the ant. The ant

    diligently stores away food during the summer while the silly grasshopper is

    havingfunplaying. Whenthecoldofwinterhits,theantsaresnugandfed,and

    thegrasshopperisdying. Again,thetimetoprepareispriortoanycalamitythat

    mightcome.

    Where to BeginThefirst,easiestandmostlogicalplacetobeginistocreateakitorsome

    typeofdocumentcasethatcanbegrabbedupquickly ifyouneedtoevacuate.

    waterproof,

    airtight

    container

    as

    a

    ammo

    If

    you

    forced

    fromyourhomeatleastyoullhavelegaldocumentsandsuitableidentification.

    Thiswillbeespeciallyhelpfulincaseofafireorahurricane,inwhichyourentire

    homemaybedestroyed. Insteadofpickingthroughtheruins lookingforyour

    importantdocuments,youllhavethemrightwithyou.

    pumpsareextremely long. Ifyouneedtogetawayfastandthetank isempty,

    youre takingagreatgambleandyoumaynotmake it towhereyouwantor

    needtogo.

    Take these first steps in your new survival plan. Once you have your

    in

    a

    place

    where

    its

    easy

    to

    grab)

    andyourcarsurvivalsuppliesarepacked,youwillhavemadeastepthatfewer

    than5%of thepopulationhasever thought tomake. Insteadof feelingmore

    nervousaboutimpendingdisasters,youwillfeelimmenselybetter.

    Thisexercisewillplaceyou in themindset that isnecessary toprepareonan

    everincreasingscale. Nowwerereadytomovetothenextstep,survivalforthe

    shortterm.1 These emergency lights are nontoxic, nonflammable and weatherproof. Lightsticks (or glow sticks) are

    perfect for survival applications. Once activated, the lightstick produces reliable, potentially lifesaving light, for a

    predictable anddependableamountof time. Youneverhave toworry thata lightstickwill suddenlyblinkout like a

    flashlight,andthere'sneveraworrythatalightstickwon'tlast,suchasacandle.

    CHAPTER TWOPREPARED TO STAY, SHORT TERM

    A Little at a TimeThesecret tocreatinganemergencysurvival stockpile is tobeginwitha

    few itemsand graduallyadd itemswhichallow you to increase fromweek to

    weekandmonthtomonth. Thekey isslowlyandsteadilystockup. The idea

    isnt togo intodebtpurchasing items inhugebulkamounts, thinking thiswill

    sustainyouinthetimeofcalamity. Youneedtosetupaplanandthenstickto

    it.

    Takeanhonest lookatwhatyoumightneed forat leastaweekor two

    with nowater, lights,or heat (or air conditioning). Whatwould youneed to

    cook,howwouldyoucook,andhowwouldyoustaywarm(orcool)? Wouldyou

    havewatertodrinkandfoodtoeat?

    Ifyoumuststayinyourhomeforashortterm,oneofthefirstitemsyou

    musthaveinyourstockpileiswater. Considerpurchasingcasesofbottledwater

    andstoringthemunderyourbed.

    Formanyfamilies,theyredoinggoodjustkeepinggroceriesonthetable

    withoutpurchasinganythingextra. Butyoucanbeginsmall,bypurchasingtwo

    ofcertain itemssuchascondiments,canned items,packagesofpasta,cansof

    tunaandsoon. Useoneandputtheotheroneinyournewstockpile. Ifyoudid

    thiseveryweekforayear,youwouldsoonhavethatextrastorethatcouldpull

    youthroughashorttermemergency.

    Besuretocyclethisfoodtoensurethatitdoesnotgobad. Butneveruse

    anyfoodfromyourstockpilewithoutreplacingit. Thatsyournewrule.

    Better Than Money in the Bank

    Realize thatduringadireemergency,youmayhavemoney,but if there

    are no stores open or the stores have run out of supplies, your money is

    worthless. Asthetitleofthisbookindicates,whatyouneedwillbeGoneBeforeYouGetThere. Thefact isclear:foodontheshelf isbetterthanmoney inthebank. Sodeterminetomaketheinvestmentnow!

    If you follow through to begin a small stockpile, you have now taken

    anothermajorstepinyourstateofpreparedness. Giveyourselfabigpatonthe

    back. Youareno longerhidingyourhead in thesandpretendingnothingwill

    everhappentoyou. Youarenowbeinghonestandrealistic.

    Inthenextchapter,welllookatlongertermsurvivaltacticswhichwillbe

    necessaryundermorecatastrophicconditions.

    CHAPTER THREEPREPARED TO STAY LONG- TERM

    Understanding Shelf Life

    In thischapterwewill lookat the ramificationsofa longersurvival time

    within the shelter of your home. What all might be needed? It will take

    consciousthoughtandefforttoprepareefficientlyandeffectively.

    Inrecentyearswehaveallbeentaughttoreadlabelsinordertocheckout

    the ingredientsofprepared food. Thishasmade consumersmore nutrition

    conscious. As a survivalist, you will now become aware of another factor

    regardingfood,andthat isshelf life. Ifyoucreateyourstockpileanddonot

    need itforayearormore,willthefoodstillbegood? Youllneedtoknowfor

    sure.

    Another factor to consider is whether or not your family will eat what

    yourestoring. Youmaythinkitsagreatideatostore50poundsofpintobeans,

    butifthatsnotsomethingyourfamilyeatsonaregularbasis,willtheyeatitina

    timeof stressandpanic? Thepoint is topreparewhatyou store. If its rice,

    makericedishes,ifitspasta,makepastadishes. Inthismanner,whenthecrisis

    hits, youwill beproviding your familywith asmuchfamiliarity as ishumanlypossible. And they will definitely need it when their whole world is turned

    upsidedown.

    Record What You Consume

    To begin your plan, record everything that your family eats during one

    month. Keepa listofwhatyounormallyuseinfood.Recordeverythingfrom

    littlethingslikesalt,pepper,garlicpowderandonionflakestomixeddrinkslike

    Tang,aswellas teaandcoffee.Consideralso food forpets. Getahandleon

    what it takes to sustain themembersofyour familyundernormalconditions.

    Thatwayyoullknowhowmuchtostoreandhowlongthatsupplywilllast.

    Also,startthinkingofhowyouwouldsurvivewithnopower. Orperhaps

    you

    have

    power

    but

    youre

    snowed

    in

    and

    cannot

    leave.

    Run

    through

    a

    number

    ofpossiblecasescenariosandbegintoprepare. Ifyouhaveacampstove,learn

    how to use it. Have a backyard cookout a couple times a month to get

    accustomedtothismethodofcooking.

    Storage

    Storeyourstockpileitemsinairtightcontainerstopreventbugs,miceand

    otherpestsfromgetting intothem. Startsavingjarsthosewithscrew lids in

    plasticandglass.Largerjarscanstorepastas,riceandoatmeal.Smallerjarsare

    goodforotherdrygoodssuchassalt,seasoningsandotherprovisionsthatmight

    beluxuriesbutnotasnecessarytohave.

    Foodgrade,5gallonplasticbucketswillbeindispensiblewhenitcomesto

    storage.Theycanbepickedupforfreeatschoolcafeterias,(orotherinstitutions

    suchasanursinghomeorhospitalcafeterias),bakeries,andrestaurants. There

    willbeendlessusesforthese. Ifyouknowastormorfloodiscoming,fillseveral

    bucketswithcleanwaterbeforethestormhits.

    Space

    Anotherconsiderationwhenbeginningyourstockpileisspace. Wherewill

    thisextrafoodbestored? Makesureyoustoreyourfoodsuppliesinasafe,dry

    andcoolplace. Ifyourgaragegetshotandhumidinthesummer,itsclearlynot

    agoodplacetostorefood.Use

    the

    garage,

    and

    possibly

    the

    attic

    space

    for

    non

    perishables

    such

    as

    yourcampstove,lanterns,papergoodsandsoforth.

    Consider adding shelving in the utility room. If youre limited in space,

    storeyourfoodsuppliesinseverallocationsinthehouse. Theresspacebeneath

    the beds. Boxes of canned goods can go there.Bathroom closets or hallway

    linen closetsmayhaveextra spaceona top shelf.Takea tourofyourhouse.

    Again,youllhavetobecreative.

    Onceyouhaveagoodstockpileaccumulated,maintainitwithaninventory

    list.

    Grains

    When thinking of storing grain,most people thinkmainly ofwheat and

    corn. Whilethosearegood,thereareothersthatarehardyandhaveaneven

    longer shelf life. Look intosuchhardyancientgrainsasmillet,amaranth,and

    barley.

    Amaranth,inparticular,iseasilygrownfromseedandisheatanddrought

    resistant. Eatenas toastedseedsorcookedasacereal, itoffers15%protein.

    Whenmixedwithwheatitmakesacompleteprotein. Addthesegrainstoyour

    listandcreatemorevarietyinyourstockpile.

    Dont forgetpopcornwhich isalsoagrain. This

    nourishingtreatwill last instorage foruptoten

    years! Howsthatforshelflife?

    Purchasedriedbay leavesfromthespicesection

    of your grocery store. Place them into stored

    grains. Bugsdonot like the smellofbay leaves

    and are deterred from their invasion. This is a

    trickyourgrandparentsknewandused. Twobay

    leavespergallonortenleavesplacedthroughout

    a5gallonbucketwilldo. Youcanalso laythem

    oncupboardshelveswiththesameeffect.

    Another insectdeterrent,notascheapasbay leaves, isoxygenabsorber

    packets.Thepacketsareaboutthesizeofateabagandtheyabsorbtheoxygenfromacontainer. Thispreventsinsectsfromlivingastheycantbreathewithout

    oxygen!

    Create a New Mindset

    Anothermentalgametoplay isthatthis isnotstoredfoodatall,but

    justextra food thatyouhaveonhandaspartofyour regularmeals. Thinkof

    beingoutoffoodwhenyouaredowntoyourtwofourweekstock.Bestrictonyourselfsothatyouwillnevertapintothisstorewhenthereisnocrisisathand!

    Thebulkof your stored food shouldbe items that are simple toprepare and

    needaslittlecookingaspossible.

    Dont forget to add a supply of batteries and extra flashlights to your

    stockpile. Aswithyourfood,rotatethebatteriessotheyarealwaysfresh.

    Another item that every family should consider is a small fireproof,

    burglarproofsafe. Inthissafe,keepanemergencystashofcash. Addingalittle

    eachweek,youwillsoonbuildupenoughcashtoseeyourfamilythroughtwoor

    threemonths. Thenmake a promise that thismoneywill never be used for

    anythingotherthansurvivalduringacrisissituation.

    Evenforashorttermemergency,itsimportanttohaveawellstockedfirst

    aid kitonhand. Considerusingaplastic fishing tackleboxas your container.

    Notonlywill itnotrust,but thecontentswillstayorganized. Therearemany

    resourceswhichprovidealistofitemsneededformedicalemergencies.

    Whenthecrisishits,youwillbeunbelievablythankfulthatyoutookthese

    initialstepstoprepare.
