For many years the course was private and it’s only been in the past several years that the course has come under new manage-ment and ownership. If you are coming from Pittsburgh it’s an easy and simple ride up Route 28 North to Ford City, Pa. It’s a beau-tiful ride that will have you checking out the scenery, mountains and farms along the way. From Greensburg, Latrobe, Alliquipa, and other areas; she’s just a thirty minute drive and well worth it too. Make sure you bring every club in your bag because this is a golf course that demands that you unleash your driver, guide your club face through the multitude of bunkers and select the right iron to carry the water that plays on several dramatic holes.

Lenape Heights in Ford City is GOLF! We pride ourselves in Pa with having some of the very best golf in the coun-try and Lenape is testament to this legacy. Stunning vistas, glorious views and natural beauty can all be found at Lenape Heights. Here you will find that the greens roll fast and that you must read every putt and read the green. Read-Roll It and Hole It; that’s how you play it here. These are some of the very best greens in the region.
No two holes are alike at Lenape; each has its own distinct flavor and charm. The terrain is a rugged combination of ele-vated tees and greens combined with down-hill Par 3’s and Par 5’s that allow you to grip it and rip it. In short, this is one of the better tracks in the area.
Once you have finished your round of golf head into the opulent clubhouse that over-looks the valley and provides awesome views of the course and mountains. Food and dinning are as important as golf here. I can not say this LOUDLY ENOUGH for you to hear; THE FOOD IS TOP NOTCH FIVE STAR DIN-NING AT LENAPE! Lenape hosts many banquets and wed-dings for one rea-son; they care about you. They put a lot of care and time into making sure your event goes off the way you dreamed.

Hole # 1 is a lovely Par 4 that allows you to take a rip at the fairway from the elevat-ed tee boxes. The green is elevated and is going to insist you start right away stroking the ball towards the cup with precision. Hole # 2 is splendid Par 5. Again teeing off from elevated tees you must negotiate the narrow fairway. You will find that the postage stamp green is below the fairway and tucked into the left side of a hill.
Hole #3 is a Par three over water and into a generous sized green.
Hole #4 arguably one of the hardest holes on the course this Par 5 plays a blind tee shot into a valley. The hole doglegs to the right to a well bunkered green.
Hole#8 is one of my favorite designs in all of the western PA region. A severe dogleg right begs you to either play it straight into the fairway or try and rip it around the corner and over some trees to make your second shot shorter. Either way you are left firing uphill into an elevated green. The green it self is fast and furious! Hole#12 is Lenape’s Signature Hole! This Par 3 plays from an elevated set of tees. The drop is a good 100 ft onto the green. However, the pond in the front will play tricks on your mind and tempo. Stay focused and you could drop it right into the cup! Hole# 13 is a Par 5, 513 Yard dandy. The green is guarded by a mote filled with alliga-tors and dragons!!! No not really, but the water surrounding the green makes it a tough hole.
Hole#16 is a short 363 Yard Par 4. Fir-ing out of the tee boxes and up and into the fairway leaves you a tricky second shot down a hill and onto the green. This is one of my personal favorites at Lenape.
Hole # 17 is a fun, fun hole. Your second shot from the fairway is a blind shot downhill onto a lighting fast green. This is a hole that can make or break your round. She’s a Par 4, but you could easily post a 8 if you get reckless!

As if frozen in a simpler time Gulf Shores harkens back to a day when kids ate ice cream and danced on the beach barefooted. The Kiva Dunes golf course is a Golf Di-gest Top 75 Course and was also recog-nized as one of the Best New Courses in the Country in 1995. This seaside links design is a full day’s work and will have you playing every club in your bag. The sand dunes really make the course the splendor that it is. As you play the course it’s almost as if you are playing well manicured fairways and greens that are cut into the lush vegetation of the woods. Lakes, streams, massive bunkers all come into play at Kiva Dunes!

Arnold Palmer is sitting in Latrobe chuck-ling to himself because he knows what’s waiting for you at Lost Key GC. Bring your A Game baby! It’s probably best to play Lost Key as your last round of golf that way you are loose and in your swing plane. This is a demanding test of skill! She is tight and narrow. Her greens are fast and slope into
green side bunkers. Water, wind, and dynam-ic layout are your enemies; your ally is your focus and your victory is to be found with a good score.

PENINSULA
Of all the great coastal golf courses, Earl Stone’s creation at Peninsula may be the most unique. This 27-hole layout set on beau-tiful Mobile Bay is nothing short of spectacu-lar as it boasts over 7,000 yards from the championship tees and has been consistent-ly rated 4 stars by Golf Digest. Situated on 820 secluded acres touched on two sides by the Bon Secour Wildlife Preserve, the natural beauty of Peninsula is a little slice of heaven right here along Alabama’s Gulf Coast. This masterful design winds through live oaks, cypress and natural vegetation, more than 30 lakes and some of the area’s largest white-sand bunkers and waste areas.
ROCK CREEK
The surprise at Rock Creek is the stunning topography, with some of Baldwin County’s highest elevations overlooking freshwater wetlands and the Rock Creek basin. The tall pines and hardwoods that line nearly every fairway only enhance the visual effect. Lo-cated off the eastern shore of Mobile Bay, this 18 hole, Earl Stone design, recently hon-ored by a 4 1/2 star Golf Digest rating, is enjoable, forgiving, and captivating. Stone’s 7,000 yd design challenges both the ama-teur and the professional. It’s a true test of golf where strategy and accuracy are the name of the game.

pitality, pace and quality of life and the seaside lifestyle make life worth living. The golf is tremendous as well. But it’s truly the people of Gulf Shores, Alabama that keep me coming back time and time again.
They are wonderful people who remember a time when “Thank You”, “Yes Ma’am”, “It was our pleasure Sir” were a way of life and the norm.
The tragedy of the BP oil spill has scarred the whole region, devastated families and businesses. However, the beaches are clean and open and the golf courses await you like a long lost friend. Glengarry-Old Latrobe’s Finest!by Tank Tantlinger These are my mountains; I grew up here. As a kid I roamed from Ligonier to Latrobe. As an adult I have traveled form Thailand to Saint Andrews; but it is the Laurel Valley & Latrobe where my heart is. I’m still shocked how many people have not discovered Latrobe and its charm. Do yourself a favor; jump on the turn-pike get off at the Donegal Exit and make your way down the mountain, onto Route 30 through Ligonier and to Glengarry Golf Course; a great day is in store for you!
The flavor of a Scottish links track waits you here. Pleasant elevation changes giveaway to even lies. The majesty of the Laurel Valley is all around you. Let’s take a look at some of the signature holes!
Hole#2/Par-3-201YDS-Buckle up boys! Down-hill and downwind doesn’t make this any easier. It’s the #1 Ranked hardest hole here. The green is guarded with water front & left! Throw in a bunker on the left as well!! Ha-Ha! Put it in the cup and you have no worries! Hole#3 is a short Par4. Your drive is uphill, then your approach shot into the amphithe-ater green is uphill. The two tiered green has a short bunker left and fescure as well. Fun hole! Hole#5/Par 3. Water and more water! Your downhill tee shot had better be “spot on” and not fade right of the green. Or that “SPLASH” you hear will be your brand new Pro-V1 sink-ing to the bottom!
Hole#10 is a Winner! You will need 235 yds to carry the lake in front of the back tees and goodness don’t push it left into the OB. The green will be above your feet; so loft it nice and high onto this two tier gem. Shucks, you really banged that one; now it’s in the bunkers behind the green! Hole#11 is unlike any other hole in the region! It’s a Par 4 from the back tees and a Par 5 from the others. Your elevated tee shot gives you a tremendous vista of the lake running alongside the right side of the fairway and up to the green. The left of the fairway is lined with trees. Easy-Peasy baby, smack it down the middle for no worries! Wait one second; there’s that darn green to deal with now. There’s water in play in the front and back of the green and that deep bunker on the right. What a golf hole!!!!!! Hole#18 is lovely! You’ll be standing on top of the world as you can see the vistas and skyline of the mountains, the clubhouse and restaurant! Once you have popped it into the fairway; watch out for the lake in front of the green! Don’t mind the gathered crowd on the deck overlooking the green area; they are well into their pints by now!
Afterward the rustic charm and atmosphere of the renovated barn has a awesome menu of burgers, wings and cold beer! Sit and relax on the outside deck and enjoy your self!

id you know that Pittsburgh, PA is the Mecca of Boxing Champions? No less than twelve men have been crowned “World Champion” who were weaned on the streets of western Pa. Pittsburgh is a tough town where men’s wills are forged from the heat of the blast furnace and from the depths of the coal mines. Pittsburgh is a town that honors, admires and bestows godlike status to her sports heroes.
This is “Leather and Blood” the story of the city of Pittsburgh, Pa and western Pennsylvania and the men who fought from the streets of the “Steel City” to become boxing’s greatest and earned the title of “World Champions”.
Their names are immortal and their stories in and out of the ring are priceless. Billy Conn the greatest light heavyweight Champion of all time who had Hollywood leading man looks and charm, the love of a beautiful woman and a stubborn streak that would rob him of his greatest victory. Billy Soose was a bad ass with a college degree and hands of steel. The Yarosz brothers who fought to feed their families during the great depression and WWII. And arguably one of the greatest fighters of all time Harry Grebb aka. “The Pittsburgh Windmill” who lived so fast he caught up with death! Charley Burley perhaps one of the best Pittsburgh fighters never to get a shot at a championship because of the color of his skin. And of course, “The Patron Saint of Dirty Fighters”, Fritzie Zivic who could thumb you in the eye and truly mean it when he said “sorry about that” and a man who loved practical jokes and the man that made Jake “The Raging Bull” LaMotta think about retiring after he beat him so bad!
Then there are the “Champions” whose lives outside the ring were troubled at best. Paul Spadafora a champion with a defensive style that made him impossible to hit and inner demons that destroyed him. There’s the story of Michael Moorer the hardest hitting Light Heavyweight Champion of all time who dared to stand in front of the immortal human wrecking ball known as Big George Foreman and lose the greatest title on the planet: “Heavyweight Champion of the World.”
These are just some of the men you will find in these pages. Men who earned the tittle of Champion through the pain and glory of leather and blood.

yourself and saying, “Why the heck didn’t we come play here before”!
From the ashes has risen the Phoenix at Buf-falo Valley in Freeport, Pa! Formally the Buffalo Valley CC the facility is under new management with the Nese Family who owns Glengarry Golf Links in Latrobe taking over ownership in partnership with the Dargenzio Family. An easy ride up Route 28 from Pitts-burgh or only 30 Minutes from Westmoreland and Beaver Coun-ties, even closer from Butler County. In the past, she hosted the “U.S. Amateur Qualifiers”; today she’s re-opening this sum-mer and will be ready for you! By far the most drastic change occurs right off the bat with the original #1 tee box being demolished and being moved back and towards the trees to make the fairway, green and a previously hidden lake visible on this dramatic and lengthy par 5 from the white Buffalo tees. The clearing of the tree line on the left side of the fairway revealed this 2nd water feature to accompany the lake near the green on this opening hole. No two holes are alike at the Phoenix. Her layout goes from wide open fairways to bottle necked greens. She moves from the floor of the Allegheny Valley to the back nine providing vistas from high atop the ridge line. Each hole is distinctly different and challenging. The newly trimmed Hole # 9 has you firing from deep out of the woods from the tees and trying to cut the left side of the more open fairway. Then you have to fire up hill and onto the Scottish style green with two newly added bunkers in the front. This is one of the best greens in our region. She is fast and an errant shot will have you rolling off the green.
Just when you thought it could not get any better; welcome to one of the best back nines in the Tri-State. Again it’s the layout and use of the natural topography that is paramount on this nine’s delight. Hole # 10, previously a par 5, has been changed into a brilliant par 4 in at 458yds. Off the tees beware of the fescued pond to your left. Then suddenly the fairway drops off into a hillside on the left. Now you are set for your third shot into “The Devil’s Green”, as I call her. She is encircled by trees, is narrow, skinny and long. Your shot must play into the center of the green or you will find yourself rolling off into one of the sand traps that guards her on the right. Simply a great hole!
# 11 will have you mesmerized and thinking you are in the high coun-try of Colorado! This Par 3, 161 yd dandy has an elevated green with a lovely rock formation and 100 ft. high pine trees surrounding it. Nature abounds here. Lovely hole
and tough too!
Any real course has you fighting right until the very last swing and # 18 will make you tighten your chin strap. Originally a par 4, #18 has been expanded with new tee boxes to a par 5 playing 520 yards from the back Phoenix Tees. Teeing off into a gradually inclining fairway that dog legs left is your first task. Risk/Reward is a way of life here at the Phoenix. The green is fronted by a mammoth sand trap. Go for it and you just might win. Come up short and get ready to add strokes to your card. Afterwards enjoy a post round drink and bever-age in the clubhouse or on the awesome deck that overlooks the 9th green and provides a spectacular view of the mountains, valley and skyline. I can’t say enough about the Phoenix. Go play her and enjoy her and I know she will be on your, “I gotta play here again” list!

track; but here God had done his work for him. Elevation changes, mountain top vistas and a days work all combine to make this course a Jim-dandy. Danny Marino is one of the owners of the property and if it’s good enough for him; it’s you know the rest. This would be a great place to retire.
It’s time to head deeper South into the “Mid-lands” and towards the Lake Murray & Colum-bia areas.
Pull over and get your clubs and balls ready for an enjoyable round along the shores of Lake Murray at the Timberlake CC. Beautiful Lake Murray shimmers in the background through-out your round. This is a relaxing round and playing beside the calm waters always is good for your soul.
The Sheraton in downtown Columbia is where you should lay your head for the night. This hotel is an “experience” and is elegant, lovely, refined, opulent and a must. I can’t say enough about this property; it has been completely remodeled with an eye on style and pinache! From her well appointed rooms with every modern amenity, to her roof top bar that over looks the Capital City; attention to detail was of paramount importance to the managers. Cap off the first leg of your journey in the “unique” “Vault-Martini Bar”! What a blast. The owners built a bar within the vault that was once used by the bank that was in the building. Enter through the massive 5 ton vault door and into the confines of the vault/bar for an evening of winding down and relaxing!

First stop is River Falls Plantation near Green-ville/Spartansburg! Gary Player must have licked his chops when he saw this track of land. Uphill and down hill lies, water in play, greens that were well thought out all come into play here.
At time her fairways were tight and her greens small and fast. The water came into play throughout the golf course. This is a round you must “think” your way through! Hole # 8 was my favorite. A narrow fairway with a lake running along the left side reveals a semi island green! River Falls is a five star design and layout!
Just down the road may be your retirement community at Cherokee Valley Golf Course and Residential Community! Wow, wow, wow is all I can say! Stunning mountain top vistas, breath-taking views and a relaxed pace of life are all here. Head down a little into the golf destination of Santee. Santee is known as “South Carolina’s #1 Value Golf Destination”. A bevy of golf courses, accommodations and restaurants awaits you in Santee. The Santee National Golf Club and the Lake Marion Golf Club are both enjoyable tracks. Santee National plays in at 6,100 yards and its gentle rolling terrain and mossy oak trees makes for an enjoyable and pleasant round of golf. The Santee Cooper Re-sort is home to the Lake Marion GC. This is a fun golf course! Hole # 1 has an outstanding
green that is protect-ed with wa-ter on your app roach shot.Hole #3 is a tough Par 3 with water and trees that mess with your mental game. The Santee area is excellent for a complete golf get-away. Plen-ty of accommodations, great golf and plenty of sight seeing are in Santee/Cooper! Get there!
Your final stop on your driving tour of SC brings you to the seaside town of Charleston. If you remember “Gone with the Wind” and the stately charm that was the Old South; with it’s sweet down home feel and charm it lives here in Charleston!
I cannot say enough good things about SC and this area. Time has pleasantly stood still here. Politeness, courtesy, good manners and a gra-cious hospitality all live here. Downtown sits snugly against the Atlantic and provides views of the bay and ocean both. Her streets are charming and stately. A visit here is like tak-ing a step into the past. Take a ride in a horse drawn carriage while you take in the sights, sounds and people. The architecture here is
breathtaking and spectacular. A must stop is the ******* hotel. This regal venue has a roof top bar that overlooks the entire city. From high aloft your perch you can drink in the magnificence of her beauty. If you have never been here; you must put her on your “Golf Bucket List” along side Pebble, Pinehurst and the Swilcan Bridge.
The golf is excellent in the region. Coosaw Creek CC is open to the public and provides a “Four Star-Lifestyle” to those who visit for a day or choose to call this home. The prop-erty has an outstanding 18 hole golf course designed by Arthur Hills. Golf Magazine calls it a “Must Play” and Golf Digest gives her 4-Stars. Wetlands, well bunkered greens and thought provoking second shots give way to a pleasant round of golf. Coosaw Creek is just 30 minutes from downtown and would be ideal for a vacation get-away or to settle down for those Golden years.

The track it carved though the inter-coastal waterway. Lush wetlands inhabited with an abundance of wildlife blends with a tapestry of Palmetto Trees that sway from the coastal breezes. Massive pines and oaks line fairways and lagoons act as natural water hazzards. You will be lost within the solitude of your round here. The finishing holes are some of the best I have ever played. The golden rays of the sun bounce off the marshlands, the birds sing and chirp. Charleston National is what golf is meant to be!

WANNA WRESTLE ? ? By Tank Tantlinger
It’s not often that you get a one on one interview with a golf legend; but twice in a lifetime? The golf gods came beckoning again last year when some old friends invited me down to Mexico for the opening of their new “Yucatan C.C.” and I found myself wrestling the “Golden Bear” again.
As the camera began to roll to film the inter-view for my “Hot Golf” TV show, some 300 people looked on as I began my “talk with Jack”.
RT: “Wanna Wrestle”?
JN: “What”?
RT:”Wanna wrestle”?
JN:”Randy you the only one here with a bigger tummy than me;
so no I don’t want to wrestle”.
RT: “Good I win!” Jack I want to show you some pictures and ask
you what your thoughts are and were”.
JN:”That’s me on the Swilcan Bridge at St. Andrews saying ‘Good
Bye’ to the game of golf”.
RT: “Why ‘Good Bye’?
JN: “Well, I haven’t played a competitive round of golf since that
day”.
RT: “I’ll play you for twenty bucks right now”!
JN: He laughs. “Well, you’ll be in good shape. I need 3 aside”.
RT: “I’ll need twenty aside. I win”.
JN: “That’s the 17th hole at the 86
Masters.
RT: “What are you feeling there”?
JN: “I’m feeling the ball went in
the hole. And I’m excited that the
ball went in the hole and that put
me in the lead for the first time all
week”.
RT: “Jack, you shot a 30 on the back nine at Augusta. You play a
different game of mental golf than a hacker such as myself; can
you describe where you were mentally during that back nine”.
JN: “Nobody was expecting me to win the tournament including
myself; but once I started doing somethings; I remembered what
I needed to do. I had my son Jack with me. I birdied 9 , 10, 11,
messed up 12 and maybe that got me going cause I birdied 13,
eagled 15, birdied 16 and 17 and Par on 18. the whole thing was
exciting. I remembered what to do and how to do it.
RT: “The pressure of Championship Sunday at the Masters has
made men melt under that pressure; but you embraced it”.
JN: “That’s what we live for. Everyone says what about the pres-
sure? Why do we practice all the time to get ourselves to be in
that situation and be under pressure? That’s what we like. That’s
where we want to be. That’s the fun and excitement of it!
RT: “Not to fold up baby”!
JN: “Nah, that’s no good”.
RT: “OK, this last picture”.
JN: “That’s Arnold and me at
Palm Springs. We both went to
the men’s room and we brushed
by this poor lady in the hallway
and it knocked her wig right off
onto the floor. I picked it up and
put it on Arnold’s head. Then
Arnie put it onto my head an we went out and danced.
RT: “Did the lady ever get the wig back”?
JN: “She got it back, but I promise you she was mortified.
Later in the day he opened his new Nicklaus academy and spent some time with the kids. In a day and age when superstar athletes could give a damn about you the fan and more about their public image so the can sell more “Tiger-ade”; thank God that both Jack and Arnie are still around for your children to learn from. If you look at “Jack the Golfer” and “Jack the Man”; they are one in the same even when no one is looking. He is the greatest golfer ever and off the course he is a gentleman.
As he was heading out the door I was leaning against the wall taking it all in as he said his good-byes. He caught a glimpse of me as he headed out the door and yelled over “Take it easy Ran”.
My camera-man didn’t understand why I had a tear in my eye.
