Joe Birch, WMCTV Channel 5 News Anchor
interview with wMC tv’s Joe BircHdo this a long time ago and I’m proud to help out in this little way each year.
Q: What’s it like seeing the faces of the winners when they receive their awards?
A: I can tell when a Star of the Industry is deeply moved by this recognition. It delights me to see deserving people get recognized for a job well done.
Q: What have you learned about the Hotel Industry from hosting this event?
A: This Stars of the Industry event is significant because we need to celebrate excellence. Visitors to Memphis generally don’t know anything about the hotel ownership group or the CVB but they do remember EXPERINCES. When guests to our city feel like they’re being treated well, they remember it and that extra effort of kindness or service might be the one thing they’ll remember about their whole Memphis experience. So celebrating excellence among those who deliver it should be recognized. It’s in our enlightened self-interest as a city to honor those who do things large or small that make Memphis great.
Q: What is the importance of tourism to Memphis and Shelby County?
A: Tourism is an enormous job creator in Memphis/Shelby County. We need the hospitality industry to be at its best 24/7/365 so that our visitors have a positive experience within our city and come on back to visit or perhaps, live here!
And to conclude our Q&A, here is a word from Wayne Tabor on Joe Birch, “We appreciate Joe Birches interest in the hospitality industry and we are fortunate to have him as our emcee of our Stars of the Industry and are thankful for the hard work he puts into it.”
Q: Could you tell us about your first job in news media, and how you became a news anchor?
A: I started out schlepping gear at WMC in 1978 as a news intern from Christian Brothers University. TV equipment was large and bulky back then and human pack mules were needed to carry lights, cameras and Action News 5 gear. I rose from the ranks of intern to weekend assignment editor to weekend producer to audio recordist (grip) assisting photographers to reporters. The station hired me on May 20, 1978, the day I graduated from Christian Brothers University. I served as a reporter from 1979 to 1983 when I was named news anchor of the 10 o’clock news. I’ve been doing it ever since and was named main anchor of the early evening newscast (6 & 6pm) in 1990. I’ve served as a reporter all these years as well.
Q: How did you get involved as master of ceremonies for the Stars of the Industry?
A: My friend Wayne Tabor invited me to
The Stars of the Industry is an annual event honoring those who go the extra mile in the hospitality
industry. Every year for some time now, WMCTV Channel 5 news anchor Joe Birch has been our master of ceremonies for this event. So, to turn the light towards Joe, here’s a quick Q & A with him to get a glimpse of his background, his thoughts on the Stars of the Industry, and of the hospitality industry as a whole.
