FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK

Brooks Koepka retained the Wanamaker Trophy to become the first player to win his first four majors inside two years as held his nerve to seal back-to-back PGA Championship titles on Sunday.

Koepka led by seven going into the final day and looked to be in control before four straight bogeys on the back nine dropped him back to just one clear of then world No.1 Dustin Johnson, who was the only player mounting a chal-lenge from the field.

But to Koepka’s credit he secured the result and with it the number 1 position on the world rankings. He also has the unprecedented feat of holding two PGA and two US Open trophies simultaneously...something that no other player has ever achieved.

Debate will continue about Bethpage’s setup and the de-gree of difficulty it presented. The championship commit-tee had the layout measuring over 6820 metres which pun-ished the majority of the world’s best.

Across the two final days, 64 competitors out of the field of 82 carded double bogeys, the ultimate humiliation for a touring pro. 6’s and 7’s were also common, a total 196 over four days, and 41 in the final round alone.

The Black, which is 83 years old, prevailed and ultimately starred during the PGA. Without having been severely ex-panded or “tricked up,” it presented the perfect test and kept us entertained right to the very end - even with so many pros being brought to their knees.

Koepka closed with an unexpected final round 4-over 74 to win by two shots over Dustin Johnson. To insult to injury, the Florida-na-tive also knocked Johnson off the top of the world rankings with his victory.“Today was definitely the most satisfying out of all of them [major victories] for how stress-ful that round was; how stressful DJ made that...I know for a fact, that was the most ex-cited I’ve ever been in my life ever there on 18,” said Koepka.“It was definitely a test. I never thought about failing. I was trying my butt off. If I would have

KOEPKA RETURNS TO NO.1 WITH RECORD PGA WIN

Despite a final round meltdown, Brooks Koepka has managed to scramble his way into the record books by securing back-to-back PGA Championship wins at Bethpage on Sunday.

bogeyed all the way in, you know, I still would have looked at it as I tried my hardest.”

At 29-years-old, Koepka becomes the first player to hold back-to-back titles in two ma-jors at the same time, a feat not achieved by any of the greats including Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus in their careers.

On top of that he also joined a select group of players, which includes Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer - to have won a major three years in a row.

Of the Australians, it was Adam Scott to take the top honours, however a final round of 4-over 74 saw him slip to a total of 1-over and a share of 8th place.

Scott, having played during the time of Tiger Woods’ domination of the game, was asked the inevitable question about Kopeka’s ma-jor results versus Woods.

“Well, it’s not quite the same. And that’s no disrespect to Brooks. It’s just not we’re not used to seeing it [big number wins] that much anymore.”

“I think comparing anything to Tiger is a lit-tle unfair in a good or a bad way. I mean, it would be probably bringing down what he managed to accomplish. He did this multiple times in majors, let alone tournaments,” said Scott.

2015 PGA champion, Jason Day closed with a 72 to drop to four over and tied for 23rd.

Cameron Smith failed to fire this week and a final round 74 left him at 11-over and lan-guishing in a share of 64th.

Lucas Herbert was another shot back in equal 71st while Marc Leishman, Brendan Jones, Stuart Deane and Craig Hocknull had the weekend off.

It’s not all about the boys and it was our Aussie girls who proudly flew the flag for Australian golf on the week-end.

A superb birdie-eagle finish at the BMW Ja-maica Classic saw US-based Aussie Ryan Ruffels secure his third top-10 finish on the PGA TOUR-Latino America this year.

Ruffels, the lone Australian in the field, fired a final round 5-under 67 around the Cinna-mon Hill Golf Club in Montego Bay to claim a share of 6th place and move into 4th place on the Order Of Merit with total prize money of US$39,029.

The top-5 at the end of the season will be awarded an all-important Web.com Tour card.

The 21-year-old, who plays out of Florida, has enjoyed a breakout year with his first two starts of the year yielding two runner-up placings at the Molino Cañuelas Champion-ship and Buenaventura Classic.

Ruffels finished five shots adrift of Amer-ican Evan Harmeling, who finished the day at 21-under to win by a stroke from Augusto Nunez.

RUFFELS’ FAST FINISH IN JAMAICA

And the good news is they were both South Australians.First former Australian Strokeplay cham-pion Stephanie Na (pictured) produced her equal best finish in a professional event with a share of second place in the US at the sec-ondary Symetra Tour’s Symetra Classic in North Carolina.Na, 29, began the final round tied for the lead with Ireland’s Leona Maguire and South Ko-rean Eun Jeong Seong. However, she could only manage an even-par round of 72 following earlier rounds of 71 and 68 to finish in a tie for second, five shots behind Ireland’s Maguire.Meanwhile another popular South Austra-lian, Jane Crafter, these days based out of

the US, showed she still had plenty of ‘game’ finishing a strong fourth at the second stag-ing of the US Senior Women’s Open Champi-onship at Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club near Pinehurst North Carolina. After opening the event with a round of 76, Crafter really knuckled down over the next 54 holes, playing them in even par to finish just four shots from the winner, Swedish leg-end Helen Alfredsson with other superstars like Dame Laura Davies and American Juli Inkster in the field.Crafter, 63, is a two time Australian Ladies Masters champion and also has an Austra-lian Open win on her resume. The daughter of the late great golf commen-tator Brian Crafter, Jane was also a winner on the US LPGA Tour during the prime of her career.Another Australian, former Sydneysider Wen-dy Doolan, played well to finish 11th despite opening with a disappointing 81.

He’s no quitter...yet even Tiger Woods must have had doubts he’d ever regain the golf swing that once had the world – and his fellow competitors - awestruck.

Yet his devoted caddie Joe LaCava never had any such doubts.Indeed LaCava refused umpteen offers of employment by other professionals as well as off the golf course work during Tiger’s en-forced layoff from the game following a se-ries of back surgeries. If LaCava had any doubts his champion would return, he certainly didn’t let them be known. And when Tiger did make it back to the course and eventually began to show something like his best form, LaCava was back on his bag, still encouraging, and confident that there was more major success in store.Obviously the US Masters capped off one of the great comeback wins in modern times. And Tiger Woods knew that, just as much as he knew the part that Joe LaCava had played in getting him across the line. That night, when the hullaballoo had died down, LaCava began to read some of the 670 text messages that he had received after their win.And there was one that stood out more than any other.“[I] appreciate you hanging in there with me,” a text from Tiger read.“I love you like a brother.”According to LaCava, in an extensive inter-view with US Golf Digest, Tiger had said a lot of kind things in past texts to him.“But ‘love you like a brother’, I don’t think that has been in there,” LaCava said.Earlier, as they sat in the scorer’s hut, Woods and LaCava hugged and playfully shoved each other, and Tiger told LaCava: “We did it” – it was never a case of “I did it.”Woods said to LaCava: “This is the first time I’ve come from behind to win a major.”Typical Tiger, thought LaCava.“He knows exactly what he has and hasn’t done.”

It’s official! Rory McIlroy will travel to Japan next year to represent Ire-land in the 2020 Olympic Games.

Tiger Woods, or rather his restaurant, gained some unwanted publicity last week with the untimely death of one of the employees at The Woods. It now seems that Woods, his girlfriend Eri-ca Herman, who manages the restaurant in Jupiter, Florida and The Woods [restaurant] are being sued over the wrongful death of Nicholas Immesberger. It’s been alleged that Immesberger died af-ter working a shift at the restaurant in De-cember.He stayed at the restaurant and drank alco-hol before driving a car and crashing, result-ing in his death. It was later discovered that he had a blood alcohol reading of .256, which is more than three time the legal limit in Florida. The lawsuit revealed that 24-year-old Immes-berger had lost control of his car and lost his life in the accident.“Well, we’re all very sad that Nick passed away,” said Woods.Immesberger, who was a bartender at The Woods, and according to the lawsuit Woods, Herman and other employees were aware that Immesberger had a drinking problem but regularly over-served him during and af-ter his work shifts. The lawsuit also alleges that Woods and Her-man were “drinking with him at The Woods bar only a few nights before the fatal crash of December 10, 2018.”“Tiger knew, or reasonably should have known, that Immesberger was habitually ad-dicted to the use of any or all alcoholic bev-erages, and/or was a habitual drunkard,” the lawsuit says.

WOODS NAMED IN LAWSUIT

After all the uncertainly with many of the world’s leading golfers ahead of the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil, along with fears of the Azika virus, there will be no such indeci-son this time around.Indeed, it seems the world’s top-ranked golf-ers will be climbing over each other to get to Tokyo.“It would be a great experience. We’re going to play the Open and then probably go back to Memphis and then go to Tokyo.”“So it’s sort of going to be one of those deals where we probably get in on Tuesday, tee it upon a Thursday, and then we’ve got to get ready for the rest of the season.”“I think as a young boy it was always my dream to play for Ireland. I wanted to play for Ireland,” he said.

“I was very proud to put on that shirt or that blazer. It’s the same as like the rugby players, right? There’s players that play for Ulster, but they want to play for Ireland. It’s seen as a whole island sport, just like hockey is, just like most of the sports are.”“So then obviously when you put the Olympics into the equation and then there’s a choice to be made, you really have to start thinking, okay, well, what are your beliefs and your values and your — it makes you sort of have to delve a little bit deeper.”“I’m excited to be going to the Olympics. I’m excited to play for Ireland. I’m excited that Neil Manchip, who was our national coach when I was an amateur, is going to lead the team.”“It’s going to be a great experience, and prob-ably a little bit nostalgic because it’ll bring me back to 15 years ago, whenever I was do-ing that with the same people, with Neil, with Sheehan.”“It’s not just a superficial decision. It’s some-thing that you have to really believe in.”

It once boasted the fourth-largest membership in NSW. But this week members at Wentworth Golf Club at Orange were left in shock after their clubhouse burned to the ground last weekend.

New golf rules have, by and large, been well accepted on most corners of the world.

Now the ruling golf bodies are ready to land the ‘big fish’ and introduce a new set of rules for handicapping...worldwide.

Despite the fact there are different games of golf played in some parts of the world, ed-ucating everyone to share a common set of rules for handicapping is set to be introduced in 2020.

Countries like Great Britain and Ireland, South Africa, Japan, Argentina, Brazil, Conti-nental Europe, Canada, Singapore, the Carib-bean and the USA are being taught what it’s all about.

A website has also been launched to provide national associations with materials to help support their own education efforts.

The ultimate goal is to provide a more con-sistent measure of players’ ability between different regions of the world.

Many national associations around the world are busy ensuring their golf courses are rat-ed in accordance with the Course Rating Sys-tem and working to update local software platforms so that they are ready to apply the new Rules of Handicapping.

While many countries will be ready to transi-tion to the WHS early in 2020, it is anticipated that some will need more time.

The World Handicap System will unite the golf world under one single set of handicap-ping rules and will be governed by the USGA and the R&A, with support from the existing six handicap authorities.

WENTWORTH GOLF CLUB DESTROYED BY FIREWORDS: KYLE EVANS // IMAGE: FACEBOOK

WORDS: KYLE EVANS

Crews rushed from Orange as well as Kel-so and Bathurst in an attempt to douse a massive fire that was believed to have been caused by an electrical fault at 1.40am on Saturday morning. While the pro shop was the only thing left standing, it appears there were no suspicious circumstances. And like so many clubs that are hit by fires, honour boards and trophies were among the biggest losses. It’s been a tough road for Wentworth in re-cent years: first there was an armed robbery in 2013, followed by months of heavy rain in 2016, then a drought has affected the club and there was also an attempted robbery of the club’s ATM last year.Club president Simon Atkinson, who was on the scene quickly after hearing news the club was on fire, said there was a concrete floor up one end and at one stage he thought fire-fighters might be able to control it, but once it got into the roof structure, it went from one end to the other.Atkinson said the rest of the floor was tim-ber and the gaming machines simply fell through - while the building was insured, he said 50 years of work from members went up in smoke.”There have been many thousands of hours of work by members to raise funds and help in the construction of the clubhouse and the facilities and we can never get that back,” he said.”We were getting on track and we turned a profit last year - when something like this happens, it puts us right back,” Mr Atkinson said. “Our biggest concern is getting golfers back on the course,” he said.

It has been going for almost 70 years. Now the famous brand of Golf Digest has had just the third ownership change in its history after being sold to Discovery Inc by previous owners Conde Naste.

US sources claim that joining forces with Dis-covery’s GOLFTV, which is the company’s new line and on-demand video streaming service, will enable Golf Digest to reach more golfers, in more ways and in greater depth than ever.

The deal was reportedly worth more than $US30m.

It is also expected to create a powerful pro-gramming engine by adding Golf Digest to GOLFTV’s offerings that already include ex-clusive carriage of the PGA Tour, the Euro-pean Tour, and the Ladies European Tour, as well as The Masters tournament, in select territories outside the US and Discovery’s exclusive global content partnerships with Tiger Woods.

The addition of Golf Digest boosts Discovery’s global golf eco-system with a leading plat-form in the US, which will allow the company to now reach golf fans with everything asso-ciated with the game, including instructional videos, equipment advice, course rankings, travel destinations, on-line bookings and more.

“Golf Digest is a world-class brand that has become the ‘go-to’ authority for millions of golf enthusiasts, professional players and global advertisers,” said the president and CEO of Discovery Inc. David Zaslav

“It’s a natural strategic fit with Discovery’s goal to be the leading golf media platform in the world.”

“Through our investments with the PGA Tour, the European Tour and our partnership with Tiger Woods, we wanted to bolster GOLFTV’s international offerings with Golf Digest’s award-winning journalism, broad consum-er reach and deep content library while also creating the largest US digital golf business.”

Australia was named as one of the key target areas, Discovery’s acquisition of Golf Digest is set to bolster the content already offered by Australian Golf Digest under its publish-ing licence with Golf Digest, including print, digital and via its on-line video platform.

The success of the ISPS Handa Vic Open was never more evident than last weekend’s announcement of a new tournament, with a similar for-mat, to be played in Northern Ireland in August.

Playing the men and women professionals concurrently on the same course has been a massive success in Victoria. And while golf can expect a resurgence in Northern Ireland after Royal Portrush hosts the Open Championship for the first time in that country since 1951, it seems the perfect time to launch a new European Challenge Tour to cash in on the renewed interest. The ISPS HANDA World Invitational for men and women will take place just a month after the Open Championship and will be played at Galgorm Spa and Golf Resort (pictured) and Massereene Golf Club. The event will run from August 15-18 and will boast equal prizemoney for men and women and has been labelled a re-branded version of the former Northern Ireland Open.Prizemoney is expected to be $US250,000 for each event. And like the Vic Open, the men’s and wom-en’s fields will compete on different courses for the first two rounds before sharing the Galgorm Castle layout for the final 36 holes. The field will be cut even further after the third round.ISPS HANDA chairman Haruhisa Handa, said he was thrilled to be involved in an exciting new World Invitational event for both men and women professionals.“The company ethos of ISPS HANDA has al-ways been to try and break down barriers and present opportunities for everyone through sport, especially those disadvantaged,” said Dr Handa.European Tour boss Keith Pelley said: “We have seen the success of the ISPS Handa Vic Open in Australia – which was won by Challenge Tour graduate David Law – and it is really exciting to have a tournament of the same format taking place in Northern Ireland this year.”

Everyone has one and when times are tough – that’s when they reach for it.

I’m talking about the ‘go-to’ club...you know, the one you can always rely on.And even one of the greatest player to ever grace our game, Tiger Woods, has one very special club: it’s his 35.25-inch, chrome-fin-ished Scotty Cameron Newport 2 putter.Tiger has used it with great dexterity to win 14 of his 15 major championships. It’s been there for 65 of his 81 PGA Tour titles and has played its part in about $92 million in winnings for the former long-running world No 1.“Yep, it’s been pretty good to me,” grinned Woods.“Seriously, it’s been a special club.”“It’s hard to describe how it’s always felt in my hands; how confident I’ve always felt with it. It’s been a huge part of my life on the golf course.”“I’ve always been a person who likes the put-ter to swing.”“I went from the (Teryllium TeI3 model) I used in ’97 at the Masters and for some reason the Scotty Cameron felt more like my older put-ter when I was younger, my old (Ping) Anser 2.”“It had the same kind of look to it, but it had, more than anything, the same type of feel and swing I liked.”“With that feel and swing, it just had that old-er feeling I grew up with, and it felt so good.”“It is one of a kind – “There is nothing exactly like this putter.”Woods said that along with the putter from the 1997 Masters, there were only two put-ters his son, Charlie, was forbidden from touching in Woods’ home.“Oh, I’ve bent it over the years,” he says.“I never feared it would be stolen, but I was always worried it would get damaged by me or something else.”“I’ve had to fix it and bring it back out.”

It’s a market that has been virtually ignored – so far.Yet about half of Australia is inhabited by peo-ple who were born overseas or their parents migrated to Australia. Now Golf Australia has decided its time to find them, welcome them into our golf clubs, and show them how to play the game.In an innovative move, Golf Australia has appointed former Sudanese refugee Sabrin Nyawela to the position of participation offi-cer.The appointment has come about because research in 2018 showed that there was an appetite for the game so long as the commu-nities felt that they were being welcomed at a club.Which is where Nyawela, 20, fits into the pic-ture.Golf Australia wanted someone with experi-ence of dealing with the issues of immigrant communities, not necessarily a golfer. As for Nyawela, she’s learning the nuances of the game, having done nothing more than a few hits of mini-golf growing up.“On the outside, as a non-golfer, a lot of peo-ple think of golf as elite, that it’s only for old, retired people who are wealthy,” she said.“But my first day coming into the office, ev-eryone was so welcoming.”“I feel like there’s a big focus on the elite, the high-performance side of things.”“We want to bring it down to a local level and find future participants in the game.”

Rory McIlroy has given the Europe-an Tour a big lift with confirmation he has rejoined the Tour.

A European Tour official confirmed McIlroy paid the annual membership fee just prior to the end of April. The confirmation also comes after McIlroy’s comments last November in Dubai when he told reporters he wanted to compete in the best competition in the world week-in and week-out ‘for the most part of the season in America’.It was for this reason, McIlroy elected for the first time in his career to commence a new year on the PGA Tour in Hawaii and not on the European Tour’s ‘Middle East Swing’ as he had done for all but one year of his pro career.McIlroy’s decision to rejoin the European Tour now makes him eligible to qualify for the Eu-ropean Ryder Cup team with the qualifying process to commence from Sept 22nd, 2019 at the close of the BMW PGA Championship.Last December, European Tour CEO Keith Pelley had flown to Belfast to meet with McIl-roy and advise him that if he did not rejoin the Tour there are rules in place stating he could not become a European Team captain.“Rory and I chat regularly and we will con-tinue to chat but yes, there are implications should Rory not take-up European Tour mem-bership,” said Pelley last December when asked about McIlroy’s membership status.Membership implies also he must play at least four regular European Tour events a year outside of the majors or World Golf Championships to be eligible for selection.Along with the July 11th starting Scottish Open, the four-time Major winner has al-ready confirmed he will compete in the Au-gust 29th commencing European Masters in Switzerland and the following month’s BMW PGA Championship. To make up the mandatory four events, McIl-roy will probably add one of the three end-of-season Play-Off Series events.

The Victorian Men’s State team has won a third successive Interstate Se-ries claiming the title on a count back from NSW after the teams finished four matches a piece in the final at The Tas-manian Golf Club in Hobart last week.

Beginning the final day, New South Wales sat atop the round robin ladder and a finals spot guaranteed with Victoria first needing to overcome Tasmania to even get a shot at defending its crown. Victoria went onto win that match 4½-2½.The other morning contest had Western Aus-tralia against NSW which dinted NSW hav-ing a clean sweep after a WA 5½-1½ win. The result ultimately damaged the Blue’s chanc-es as they finished the round robin format on the same points as the Victorians both on contests and individual matches won.The Golf Australia Interstate Series rules stipulated that if the two teams drew in the

final, the outcome would be determined in how many matches were won by players at the No.1 position in each team through the round-robin matches and that fell Victoria’s way 3-2½.“It might not be a conventional way to win, but we finished on top and that’s all that mat-ters,” said Victorian captain Blake Collyer. The eight man final was another close inter-state contest similar to previous years where the smallest of margins exists between vic-tory and defeat. NSW picked up two matches early with Jye Picken at number 8 accounting for Konrad Ciupek, 3&2, in the opening match. Lucas Higgins at number 7 then secured an impressive 5&4 win over Aiden Didone. When Harrison Crowe playing in the 6th po-sition held off a determined Lukas Michel in an extremely tight contest with a 2&1 win, NSW looked steady to claim its first title since 2016.NSW captain Blake Windred also put on a stellar performance to account for Blake Col-lyer 6&5 to add to the momentum. But the upper order of the Victorian team were relentless.Kyle Michel at number 2 played impressive golf in his match against Nathan Barbieri with a 4&3 victory and Andre Lautee was too strong against Jordie Garner at number 4 with a 6&5 victory. When Matias Sanchez ac-counted for Josh Armstrong with a 2&1 win at number 3, the Victorians had swung the series around in their favour. With Darcy Brereton comfortably 2-up with two to play against James Conran, NSW needed a half to secure the victory. Conran responded with a solid par on the 17th for a win to keep NSW’s hopes alive as the pair headed down the par-3 18th. When Conran’s tee shot was blocked left to finished plugged in the greenside trap, the door was open for Brereton. However, he was also feeling the pressure and finished well short of the green.Brereton needed to execute a delicate chip over a bunker to a short sided pin position which he did, before winning the hole for a 2-up result and Victoria’s fourth Interstate ti-tle from five in what was a classic final.

New South Wales women’s team has won the Australian Interstate series for the second successive year after a superb performance by all six team members in the final with a 5½-½ win over Queensland last week in Hobart.

Both teams had ended the round robin series even in games and in matches meaning the championship was there for the taking. De-spite earlier hiccups with a 3&2 loss in their opening match of the series against Victoria, NSW delivered the goods to cap off the series

with an impressive team effort in the final.

From the first match out, won by Sophie Yip with five consecutive halved holes to finish 1-up, to Doey Choi in the No.1 slot, New South Wales were simply too strong for Queensland in the final in what was a dominate display of individual golf within the team environment.

Co-skipper Grace Kim was 5-under when she accounted for Issy Taylor 3&2. Steph Kyri-acou made six birdies in beating Queensland skipper Dee Dee Russell, 4&2, and Kelsey Bennett made five of her own in accounting for Lisa Edgar 5&3.

Last year’s winning skipper Amy Chu was in stellar form to account for Sarah Wilson, 2&1.

Choi had been 3-down through 12 in her match at No.1 against Cassie Porter, yet mounted a spirited fightback to halve the match after making four birdies in her final six holes.

“We’re really proud of our team,” said Choi.

“I was not letting the team down and not go-ing to finish without a fight. So I just gave it all I had...and here we are.”

“Having most of the girls from last year makes it feel a lot better that we can do it again.”

a graphite body with a steel tip to net out at just 75g, with most of the mass concen-trated in the tip. They’ve redistributed that saved weight by adding 10g to the head in the form of two sole weights, and adding 30g to the grip-end via a 10g-lighter grip and 40g end-weight.

The effect of Stroke Lab’s innovative weight distribution on the stroke is dramatic. Od-yssey studies indicate improvements in the consistency of backswing time, face-angle at impact, ball speed, and ball direction*.

Feel for the putterhead becomes more acute, helping the golfer repeat the same, smooth stroke time after time.

Stroke Lab putters are targeted at any golf-er who wants to putt better (that’s every-one). The Stroke Lab lineup consists of 10

great shapes – six mallets and four blades – all with Odyssey’s newest White Hot Mi-crohinge insert for smooth roll and great feel, in a choice of pistol grip or oversize grip.

MODELS AND PRICING

The new Stroke Lab lineup boasts a variety of proven mallet and blade shapes includ-ing: #7, #7S, Marxman, Marxman S, 2-Ball Fang, 2-Ball Fang S, R Ball, R Ball S, Tuttle, Tuttle Flow, V-Line, V-Line S, V-Line CS, #1 CH, #3; #9, Double Wide and Double Wide Flow.

Royal Melbourne has taken out the division one men’s title in the Vic-torian metropolitan pennant com-petition recently, while Huntingdale took account of an unbeaten Com-monwealth to win the women’s flag.

Royal Melbourne’s 5-2 victory over Metropol-itan at Victoria is the first Division 1 Flag for the club since 1931, a period of 88 years in the making. Signs of a pending victory came early with Royal Melbourne’s number 7, Aar-on Southern, securing a solid 4&3 win over Nicholas Brown.

When Edward Donoghue, playing number 6 for Metropolitan, responded with a 4&3 win over Sean Ong the ledger was all square.

David Shimmin at number 5 for Royal Mel-bourne put his team momentarily in the lead with a 2&1 win over Adam Tsiamis but Lukas Michel at number 4 for Metropolitan secured a vital 3&2 win over Harrison Gilbert.

At this point the two teams had two matches each with the top three matches being even-ly contested.

James McMillan playing number 3 for Royal Melbourne was brilliant in securing his 3&1 win over Aiden Didone, which was the mo-mentum changer for his team.

Darcy Brereton at number 2 was too strong for Chris John, winning 6&4, leaving former Australian Amateur champion Matias San-chez to secure a 2&1 win over fellow State representative Blake Collyer.

In the women’s final, Huntingdale secured a dominate 5½-1½ victory over Commonwealth through strong efforts from its lower order with Kallista Do and Trinity Francis winning their 7th and 6th matches which underpinned the team’s victory after Helen Gubbels, Lisa Teo and Beneath Wong all went onto secure match wins.

The result was the reverse of last year’s final and the Commonwealth team was shaken by it having gone through the season undefeat-ed and only securing one match win in the final with their number 5 Kim Kennedy beat-ing the Huntingdale captain Emily Smith 3&2 at the 16th hole.

When I contended in the British Open [last year], they felt the buzz.”“They now understand how hilly Augusta Na-tional is...and that’s just something they keep talking about.”Woods said he found a swing in which he could start drawing the ball even though he didn’t possess the length he used to have.“I found something in my game and I felt com-fortable turning it, the long irons, the three wood, the driver and I maintained that ability

to hit the slider too,” he said.Woods said he had been grinding his butt off at home before heading to Augusta for the Masters.“More than anything I had to open my mind up when I got there,” he said. The 15-time major champion gave one of his most revealing interviews for several years and appeared relaxed and as happy as any-one has seen him for years. It’s an interview worth sitting through and certainly indicated there could be more ma-jor championships afoot.Watch out Jack Nicklaus and that 18-major record. As far as tourist attractions go, it’s even better than par for the course and now the longest golf course in the world continues to bring tourists to the Australian Outback. And as the ‘Nullabor Links’ as it is fondly re-ferred to, celebrates its 10th birthday, there is no sign of it slowing down, or even trim-ming its fairways, for that matter either. That’s because your mower would probably run out of petrol on this 1365km course which stretches all the way from Ceduna in South Australia to Kalgoorlie-Boulder in Western Australia. It seems thousands of people have now played the course, which was ‘concocted’ over a few bottles of wine between Alf Caputo and the manager of the Balladonia Roadhouse, Bob Bongiorno as they discussed a way to make visitors hang around this remote region for longer and spend a few more dollars.“We now have receipts for about 17,000 that have actually paid to play by getting a score-card, but we know and understand from feedback from the roadhouses that almost the same amount play but don’t pay,” Caputo told the ABC.“The other side of it is there have been bene-fits in people playing the course from a safe-ty point of view.”“There’s some compelling figures to say the accident rates have dropped significantly be-cause fatigue doesn’t exist if you drive 100 kilometres, have to get out and hit a ball.”There are synthetic tees and greens, which were installed a decade back at a cost of about $350,000 after receiving funding from the Federal Government. And each year there is also the annual Chas-ing The Sun tournament which drew a field of 71 this year from as far afield as Germany, the US and even Canada. And if you’re thinking there might be a hole with a par of 100 you’d be wrong. Each hole is about the same distance of your normal par four or five – it’s just that it’s a long way to the next tee.

In his first appearance at the tournament, Cooke started the day with a two shot lead before going on to win the title by two shots from Jack Wilson with rounds of 71, 65, 64 and 70 for a tournament total 18-under 270.

“I didn’t watch any scores through the whole round today so I didn’t really have any idea where I was at when playing the last few holes,” said Cooke.

COOKE GOES LOW TO SECURE MAIDEN WIN AT PNG OPEN

Peter Cooke has won the 2019 SP PNG Open after an impressive per-formance at Royal Port Moresby Golf Club in Papua New Guinea last week.

WORDS & IMAGE: PGA AUSTRALIA

“Obviously we had the scoreboard for our group but I kind of had to wait until I’d holed the last putt and just judge by the reaction of everyone and ask a few officials. Once I got the okay and all clear, it was awesome, I’m stoked.”

Winning the SP PNG Open marks Cooke’s maiden win on the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia after finishing runner-up at the WA PGA Championship in 2014.

“It’s awesome,” said Cooke. “I’ve obviously waited a long time. It’s what I live for, I love golf and I’ve always wanted to be a pro.

“This justifies a lot of hard work that I’ve put

into the game so it’s so satisfying and such a great feeling.”

Maintaining his lead for the duration of the fourth round, an eagle on the par-5 8th hole helped to extend Cooke’s lead with birdies on the 12th and 13th holes helping to seal his fate.

Holding a four-shot lead on two occasions in the final round, the competition closed in as the tournament came to its conclusion with runner-up Jack Wilson firing three birdies in a row from holes 14 to 16 to bring the margin down to two shots.

Admitting the nerves crept in as he played the final few holes, Cooke was pleased he was able to maintain his composure to close out the tournament.

“I honestly was just thinking to myself, ‘don’t do anything silly, and just play smart golf. I don’t have to force anything, I’ve got a couple shot lead’.

“I didn’t let anything get to me for the whole day.”

Cooke’s maiden win secures the South Aus-tralian an exemption on the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia until the end of the 2020 season and opens doors around the world.

“With the exemption that you get from it now I can probably have a look at a Japanese Q-School or something like that. It’s exciting.”

Praising the condition of the Royal Port Mo-resby Golf Club course, Cooke enjoyed the experience in the heat of Papua New Guinea.

A tournament total of 16-under the card se-cured second place for Jack Wilson, while a very competitive Jordan Mullaney tied for third place alongside Kade McBride at 14-un-der the card.

Dale Brandt-Richards, Brady Watt and Blake Proverbs tied for fifth position at 13-under the card.
