DESCRIPTION

This veterinarian-presented slide show demonstrates biomedical research using research animals benefits humans and other animals as well. In answering the animal "rights" oriented question of the ethics of doing research in living creatures, it instead makes the case that not doing the research is the true unethical position as advancements never made help no creature. Turning away from animals as vessels of biologic understanding is a turn away from enlightenment. Veterinarians who care for patients should understand that without animal-based research there can be no treatments and suffering writ large remains more widespread.

“3 Rs”: Research Design Paradigm

•Refine

•Reduce

•Replace

Page 15: Goldman04082010

Refine

• Better living conditions for animals

• Minimizing discomfort wherever possible

• Better training for animal caregivers

Page 16: Goldman04082010

Reduce

• Fewest animals for statistical significance

• Plan multiple procedures on each animal

• Improve experimental design to allow fewer subjects & avoid repeats

Page 17: Goldman04082010

Replace

• In Vitro Testing

• Computer Modelling

• MRI Scanning

• Micro dosing

Scientists: Real Heroes

Jedd D. Wolchok, MD, PhD

Dr. Wolchok is a medical oncologist who specializes in the treatment of melanoma. He is interested in finding new and improved ways to prevent melanoma from recurring after surgery, as well as more effective treatments for the disease when it does recur. His research is focused on the development of innovative ways to use the immune system to treat cancer.

Philip Bergman, DVM, PhD

Dr. Bergman is one of the nation's leading veterinary oncologists and earned a PhD in human cancer biology from the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. In collaboration with Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center he developed a canine melanoma vaccine, the first U.S. government-approved vaccine of any kind for the treatment of cancer.
