There was a knock at the door.

Kelsey opened the door.

“Hi,” she said.

It was Josh Butler,

the veterinarian’s son

from next door.

“My dad told me about the fawn,”

he said. “Can I see him?”

“Yes, come in,” said Kelsey.

“Grrr!” said Goldie. “Grrr!”

Josh stopped.

“Uh, oh!” he said.

“Goldie!” said Kelsey.

“She is a friendly dog,” said Kelsey.

“She has never bitten anyone!”

“Grrr!” said Goldie. “Grrr!”

“I think she wants to bite me,”

said Josh.

“Goldie!” said Kelsey.

“Be good!

Josh isn’t going to hurt the fawn.

He just wants to see it!”

Goldie whimpered.

Kelsey told Josh.

I can’t even get her to go out

and play.”

The Fawn

Goldie the dog was asleep

when a noise woke her up.

What was that noise?

Something was outside!

Goldie ran to the door

and began to scratch at it.

“Woof, woof,” barked Goldie.

“Woof, woof!”

Scratch, scratch, scratch.

Kelsey woke up.

She could hear Goldie scratching

and barking at the front door.

“Go back to sleep, Goldie,”

she said.

Goldie scratched at the door again.

“OK,” said Kelsey.

She got out of bed

and went down the hall

to the front door.

Kelsey opened the door,

and Goldie ran out barking.

Goldie ran across the porch

and down the stairs.

“What is it, Goldie?” asked Kelsey.

She went down the stairs

and looked under the porch.

“What’s that?”

Kelsey saw a little face

with big soft ears under the porch.

“A fawn!” said Kelsey.

“It’s a baby fawn!”

The summer

night had been cold.

Kelsey and Goldie could see

that the little fawn was shivering.

A Wild Animal

Dr. Butler watched the little fawn

trotting around the yard

after Goldie.

Goldie barked happily,

and the little fawn tossed his head

and did a small dance.

“I think it’s time for us

learn to live in the wild,”

said the veterinarian.

Kelsey and her dog Goldie

had been taking care

of the little fawn

ever since they had found him

under the porch of Kelsey’s house.

“No!” said Kelsey. “No!

He’s too little to live in the woods

by himself.”

“He is growing up. You know that,”

said Kelsey’s father.

“He needs more room.

He can’t live in the house

“We could make him a barn

She pointed to the yard.

“We have a huge yard.

There’s plenty of room!”

“But that wouldn’t be fair to him.

He should be in the wild

with other deer,”

said Dr. Butler.

Beauty and The Beast

Once upon a time there was a merchant

who had three daughters. One day, he decided

to go to the market and buy each of his

daughters a gift. Before he left, he asked

his daughters what they wanted him to buy

for them. The oldest daughter asked

for a beautiful dress. The middle daughter asked

for a golden necklace. The youngest daughter,

named Beauty, said, “Just pick a rose

and bring it home to me.”

After the merchant had finished his business

at the market, he set off for home.

Suddenly, lightning flashed across the sky

and thunder boomed. The merchant looked around.

Where could he go to get out of the storm?

He saw a castle in the woods with a light

shining from a window.

“Perhaps I’ll find shelter for the night there,”

he thought to himself. He knocked on the door,

but no one answered. He pushed the door

open and went into the dining room. There,

on the table, was a plate of hot food.

“Hello!” he shouted, but no one answered.

The merchant was so hungry

that he sat down to eat.

Casey and the Nest

“Georgie, don’t forget you have

a dentist appointment today,”

said Mother Giraffe.

“I know,” said Georgie.

“I didn’t forget.”

Georgie brushed his teeth

until they were shiny and white.

Then he flossed his teeth.

Georgie decided to take the short cut

to the dentist. He walked down a path

through the jungle.

He was walking along

when he heard something

in the tree branches over his head.

He looked up and saw

Casey the Crow

struggling with a silver ribbon

snarled around some leaves.

“Hello, Casey,” said Georgie.

“What are you doing?”

“Hi, Georgie,” said Casey.

“I’m trying to get this ribbon unstuck.

Isn’t it pretty?”

It was an old, tattered ribbon.

“Maybe I can help.”

Georgie reached up

It broke away from the leaves.

Georgie handed the ribbon to the crow.

“Here,” he said.

“Oh, thanks,” said Casey,

and he flew off towards his nest.

Cinderella

Once upon a time there was

a beautiful girl whose mother died

when she was very young.

After a time, her father married a widow

gave her stepdaughter only hand-me-down

dresses, leftover scraps to eat, and

a hard cot to sleep on.

The poor, young girl had to work all day,

and only when evening came was she

allowed to sit for a while by the fire,

near the cinders. That is how she got her

nickname, for everyone called her Cinderella.

One day, the two stepsisters came home

with beautiful new dresses. There was

to be a ball at the palace, and everyone

was invited. “We are so excited!

Tonight we will dance with the prince!”

exclaimed the stepsisters. “He is so

very handsome.”

“I’m busy,” Mother Penguin replied.

“Your father can help you

“Soon you will have two new brothers

“All my mother and father

No one pays any attention to me.”
