A Note From The DirectorNINE is a Tony Award winning musical (Best Musical and Best Musical Revival) based on the 1963 Federico Fellini film “8 ½.” The film was based on an Italian play by Mario Fratti. The title “8 ½” came from Fellini himself when asked how many great films he had directed. He simply said “8 ½.”In 1982, composer/lyricist Maury Yeston and author Arthur Kopit adapted “8 ½” into NINE. When asked why he titled his musical adaptation of “8 ½” as NINE, Yeston stated, “When Fellini made 8 ½, he already had done seven films and a documentary, so he called his next movie 8 ½. I thought if you add music, it’s like half a number more.”Like Fellini’s autobiographical film, NINE, the musical, focuses on Guido Contini, an Italian film director who is haunted by the women in his life just as his career is in jeopardy. Guido Contini is a wreck. He is attracted to and torn between many women including his wife, his mistress, and the star he needs to make a great movie. He tries to escape to Venice but the city does not help. In the end, only the past is able save him.Having directed and choreographed NINE twice in the last 18 years, I was eager to embrace this musical treasure again. It appeals to me in many ways. NINE offers a cadre of amazing and exquisite female characters that audiences soon grow to love. More than in most musicals, the script of NINE and the lyrics in the songs delve right into the heart of each character. I believe author Arthur Kopit and composer/lyricist Maury Yeston got it completely right when creating this wonderful musical. The creators of this stage musical about a world famous filmmaker fashioned a play that is totally film-like on the stage. For the original Broadway production, which opened in 1982 and starred Raul Julia, Anita Morris and Liliane Montevecchi, director/choreographer Tommy Tune and his production team created a distinctive yet elegant atmosphere that was breathtaking in its simplicity. The production concept worked so tremendously well that it has remained the main source of inspiration for any production of NINE that has followed, including the most recent Broadway revival that starred Antonio Banderas. Tommy Tune’s version of NINE has inspired my own.NINE is about one man’s journey into adulthood albeit a little later than most men should arrive there. When watching NINE, try to enjoy the journey Guido takes. I hope that the journey will be like the tarantella that Guido is taught. It will awaken passion and love! Ciao!

How To Enjoy A PlayIn order for an audience to enjoy a play, it is important for every audience member to realize that he or she is a part of the performance, and has a specific role to play. That role has certain responsibilities attached to it, and a certain “etiquette” that should be observed so that the individual patron, the audience as a whole, and the artists on stage are all able to enjoy the wonderful experi-ence of a live theater production. Because the relationship between the actors and the audience is so important to a successful production, the following guidelines are suggested to the first time theater patron. They are as follows:

Always arrive at least twenty minutes prior to curtain time. Do not 1. arrive late.

Be prepared for the show by reading the program, director’s notes, 2. study guide, or any other background information available. This will greatly enhance your enjoyment of the production.

Give your energy, attention, and support to the performers.3.

Do not eat or drink in the theater. Do not unwrap candy, or do any-4. thing that may disturb the actors, or other members of the audience.

Do not talk or whisper during the performance. Remain quietly seated 5. while the performance is in progress.

If you arrive after the play has started, ask the ushers or house man-6. ager to advise you on whether or not to enter the house. If you must leave during the performance, try to wait until intermission, or until a scene-change.

Turn off all cell phones, pagers, and wrist watch alarms before enter-7. ing the auditorium. Better still, leave these devices either at home, or in your vehicle.

Do not bring children under the age of five to the theater, unless the 8. production offered is specifically intended for them.

The observance of these simple suggestions will enhance not only your own experience at any theater production you attend, but will also ensure a positive experience for the actors and other audience members with whom you share the performance.
