Central Otago REAP and Cromwell Men’s Shed have teamed up to run a course aimed at women who are wanting to learn to repair items around their own homes.

It is, however, open to anyone wanting to acquire some handy home maintenance skills.

The idea for the course came from a group of women who had lost their partners, and they just needed some more knowledge to be able to do some of the things around the home that their partners had done prior to this.

CO REAP Manager, Bernie Lepper, says, “After looking for a tutor I then contacted the Cromwell Men’s Shed and they were outstanding. Full of enthusiasm and ideas for helping to run the course. This has led to the “Handy Hints” course starting in Cromwell next month. A great collaboration!”

The course is scheduled to start on 6th August, in the REAP rooms at the Crom-well Polytechnic Central Campus, 19 Mol-yneux Avenue, from 9.30am till 11.30am.

The first session will cover sharpening knives, using glue and solvents, etc

Handy hints for around the homeA CO REAP-Cromwell Men’s Shed Partnership

and people are asked to bring a knife to practice their new skill, and any item or material that you would like to learn how to glue.

Other mornings will cover such things as engines(cars and lawnmowers), drip-

ping taps, fuses, draining water supply and painting. The sessions are free, through the ACE programme, and you can book your place by contacting CO REAP online at www.coreap.org.nz or by phone on 03 448-6115.

Congratulations to Bob Scott on being elected to the Cromwell Community Board and congratulations to both him and David George for campaigns well run.

Bob is joining the Board at the most interesting time in local government in decades.

I remember well when I was in his shoes back in 2009. My neighbour John Shand and I used to yarn over the fence about life in general and local politics in particular. John had been on the VCB for years and was heavily invested in what went on. I certainly wasn’t at the start of our conversations but over the years became more so, as I found out from John more about what the Board did and the impacts of its decisions. Looking back, I am sure he was lining me up for when he decided to step down.

Unfortunately, John never got to choose. I woke one day to another neighbour advising me that John had passed in the night. After a bit of thinking and discussing it with Linda and others, I put my hand up and came in on a by-election, same as Bob.

Entering office mid-term is a trickier proposition than at the start of a term as you are the only one in the position of being the new kid in class. I can recall being staggered by how much learning I had to do, despite John’s tutelage. I learnt that. even though from the outside, local government looked complicated with many competing issues and priorities, once you are on the inside, it looks even worse! For a while anyway.

Bob is fortunate, as I was, to have an exceptional board Chair and a board of hard-working fellow members who I am sure will make him feel welcome and help him get up to speed.

It is that time again - calling all poets! The Bannockburn Arts Festival, ‘Across the Bridge’, will celebrate its tenth anniversary In September-October this year, with an extended programme and two chances to show your prowess with words.

Last year the Poetry Slam was a very popular addition to the festival.

According to Wikipedia, ‘a Poetry Slam is a competition arts event in which poets perform spoken word poetry before a live audience and a panel of judges’.

Participation takes courage and performance skills - but mostly courage - and the audience gives great support and encouragement. Poets progress through three rounds on the night, with a different poem in each round.

New Zealand Poetry Slam runs the annual, national performance poetry competition that takes place across Aotearoa, and it will accept the winner of the Bannockburn Slam as a regional finalist for the national competition.

This person will be given some financial assistance to travel to the national finals.

Last year there were three play-offs (in Queenstown, Wanaka and Cromwell) where the progression of poets was whittled down to nine performers, and

Poetry is the wordfrom there the regional finalist was chosen.

This year it will all happen at one event, in the Coronation Hall, Bannock-burn. The judges are all members of the audience, chosen randomly on the night, amongst loud support from the audience. The audience rules at a Slam.

The festival has also run a written poetry competition for several years, with categories for school students and for adults.

The winners receive monetary prizes of $200 for the adult category and $100 for the student. In addition, the two winning poets will be published in a local paper.

The adult section can be on any topic, the student section must go with the theme.

Poems could have been previously pub-lished but cannot be re-entered from pre-vious year’s submissions to the festival.

So, use these winter nights by the fire to get your creativity going. There is no need to enter for the Slam - just turn up early on the night of Tuesday, 28th September, as if too many poets arrive, it will be first-come-first-served. Details of the written poetry competition will be sent to all Central Otago schools, and may be emailed to individuals by request from [email protected]

Justine Cormack, in recent years a Queensbury resident, is happily reuniting with old friends Sarah Watkins and James Bush to play the music of Bach, Part and Shostakovich at the Coronation Hall, Bannockburn, in a concert presented by Arts Central in association with Chamber Music New Zealand.

The carefully crafted programme draws equally on the varied expertise of this trio of Aotearoa’s most accomplished chamber musicians: James’s exquisite baroque practice with Sarah and Justine’s shared experiences with NZTrio’s modern outlook. The trio all grew up together in Christchurch, and this tour is the first time they have performed together in over 20 years.

The tour was initially ‘Les Voisins’ (The Neighbours), French music throughout the centuries, but with one player stuck in Sydney under lockdown, James and Justine ‘made lemonade’, and invited Sarah to join them. They have put together this superb musical event.

As a freelance violinist, Justine Cormack collaborates broadly as a soloist, cham-ber musician, guest-concertmaster and orchestral violinist. She was a founding member of NZTrio. She was appointed to NZSO Sub-Principal 1st-Violin in the 1990’s, followed by Concertmaster of the

“Vieux Amis” - Old friends making music in Bannockburn

Auckland Philharmonia from 2000-2004. She recently released Douglas Liburn’s Piano and Violin Duos with Michael Houston. She plays on an 1868 J B Vuillaume violin.

Sarah Watkins (pianist) has an impressive career as a performer and recording artist. A founding member of NZTrio, she now enjoys a wide variety of collaborations with musicians all over Aotearoa. Official pianist for the Michael Hill International Violin Competition since its inception in 2001, she regularly appears as a freelance player in the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra. She is on the staff of the University of Auckland.

Winner of the TVNZ Young Musicians Competition and the National Concerto Competition of New Zealand.

James Bush (cello) has performed as soloist with all of New Zealand’s leading orchestras. He has worked regularly in the last decade with many of Europe’s leading baroque orchestras. He plays on an 1834 Auguste Sebastian Philippe Bernardel cello.

d tor a u ed Creative pursuits are dominating so far, as applicants submit their ideas for a share of a $20,000 prize pool.

Connect Cromwell, a Community-Led-Development group are running ‘Winning Ideas’, a competition where anyone can pitch a community-focused idea to a panel.

Community Facilitator Tania Partridge said groups were out-lining their ideas via an applica-tion form and the top ten would then be chosen to vie for a share of the funds. Successful appli-cants could win up to $5000 to make their project a reality.

“They can present their idea to the panel in any way they like, there’s very few rules, it just needs to be something good for the community that might bring people together or create a pos-itive experience. We are excited by the range of enquiries so far – there are lots of active groups and individuals with great pro-ject ideas, especially amongst the creative types so far.”

She said the group had extended the deadline for applications to be submitted to August 6 to allow people more time after the busy school holiday period.

Any groups or individuals can email [email protected] for an application form.

A date for the fun, informal event where ideas are pitched would be announced soon.

Not your standard career - more like a contender for Hawea’s Southern Girl Competition... meet Charlotte Lamb, rabbit controller, ferreter.

Charlotte grew up on a farm in Hawea Flat and comes from a background of pest controllers.

“My grandad was a deer culler, and my dad was on the rabbit board. So, pest control is in my blood,” she says.

Charlotte moved to the Wairarapa for a while but decided to return to the Wanaka area. Before starting her business, she was dry stock farming in Tarras, but was made redundant due to a combination of bovid and covid.

She decided to get into rabbit control after viewing videos about ferreting in the United Kingdom.

She thought it was really different and was keen to give it a go.

She believed that a different method of catching rabbits would be useful in areas where you can’t use poison or shoot a rifle.

In fact, ferrets were introduced into New Zealand in the 1880s for the pur-pose of controlling rabbit numbers.

Charlotte and her ferrets - a rural life

“When I started rabbiting, I only knew of one other person who did ferreting, now there are four of us in the Wanaka area,” says Charlotte.

The upside of her work is being able to work with animals and hear-ing great feedback about people no longer having a rabbit problem.

The downside is definitely weather - ferrets don’t like high winds or rain,

so ferreting can be very tricky in the winter months.

Of course, this time of the year is an efficient time for rabbit control, as it will very shortly be peak breeding season.

A single female rabbit can have 45 offspring in a year, producing a litter of four or five kittens every six weeks.

Rabbits can breed at five months of age, so a female born in early spring will produce young within the same breeding season. Rabbit populations commonly increase eight- to ten-fold in one season.

“People are always shocked when I turn up to their house and I’m a girl but a lot of the time they think it’s really cool to see a girl doing this line of work,” says Charlotte, adding, “and I haven’t had any complaints as to my work ethic.”

She gets very fond of her ferrets, saying, “A lot of people consider them a tool, but I look at them like they are my babies. They all have names and I know who is who, they also have different personalities like dogs.”

Charlotte is happy doing her work anywhere from within town bounda-ries to large stations. She arrives with perhaps seven dogs, net fences, two experienced ferrets and two young trainee ferrets, and it is fascinating to watch them take up their various roles.

So, if driving down your lane at night reminds you of Watership Down, Charlotte can be contacted on [email protected]. You’ll want to cuddle her ferrets for their good work, as she does - or perhaps not?

Several young keen learners from Barnardos Cromwell came with a cake and card to thank the staff at Quantum Print for their donation of unwanted landline phones and a fax machine.

They used these to transform their space into a business as if at a real office at the happy day care.

Early Learning Educator Jess said, “The kids were loving being ‘at work’ and the parents and teachers said it was very cool to watch.”

The Quantum team entertained the kids with their day-to-day work on producing the Cromwell & District News, pad making and photocopying. The excite-ment on their faces was a joy to see.
