Indian Jute Sector at a Glance

• Jute is the second largest cash crop in India, after cotton

• Globally jute holds the second rank in terms of natural fibreproduction

• Two major types of Jute Plants (Tossa & White)

• The fibre is obtained from the bark of the plant after retting andthe stem is used primarily as domestic fuel

• Jute is a ligno-cellulogic (bio degradable) and yearly renewablenatural bast fibre with golden & silky shine

• It is the cheapest bast fibre (other bast fibres are Flax, Hemp,Ramie, etc.)

• Jute products are bio-degradable and environment-friendly
