All of us at Music at Oxford welcome youwarmly to our inspiring new season ofworld-class concerts. This season webreak with tradition and commence onemonth earlier than usual; be sure not tomiss Alina Ibragimova in early September!

As you look through our latest ‘musicaloffering’ (pun intended), you will quicklysee that J S Bach features heavily, startingwith the works for solo violin (AlinaIbragimova), and the Goldberg Variations(Mahan Esfahani). As our 2016-17 seasonbegan to take shape, we decided toembrace the fact that many of our artistsare world-renowned Bach specialists, andso in addition to Alina and Mahan, you willbe able to follow our Bach year throughperformances by Paul Lewis, whom we aredelighted to welcome back to MaO andwho will perform Bach’s Partita no. 1; thespirited Academy of Ancient Music, placing Bach in the context of his Italiancounterparts; and our friends in the OxfordBach Choir performing the monumentalMass in B minor with the London MozartPlayers. And don’t miss Merton CollegeChoir - together with Instruments of Timeand Truth - performing Singet dem Herrnand Christ lag in Todesbanden alongsidethat perennial favourite, Handel’s DixitDominus!

In addition to Bach, there will be morefrom the Italian baroque on offer from the vibrant players of La Serenissima,Gesualdo from the sublime voices of the Marian Consort, Mendelssohn’s violin concerto performed by ArabellaSteinbacher with the Philharmonia,Mozart by Rachel Podger and KristianBezuidenhout (violin and fortepiano), and Schumann, Schubert and Sibelius by the City of Birmingham SymphonyOrchestra, under the baton of theinspirational Nicholas Collon.

There is much more besides, and wehope that everyone will find concerts that they will wish to attend. We strivevery hard to bring superb artists andrepertoire to our audience; this is thereason for Music at Oxford’s veryexistence.

Please do join us on our musical journey!

    Warmest wishes,

WELCOME! ABOUT usMusic at Oxford is a concert series,so rather like a music festival, onlywith our concerts spread over manymonths, rather than concentrated inone or two weeks. We do not haveour own venue, but instead utiliseseveral glorious buildings aroundthe City, such as the SheldonianTheatre, the Holywell Music Room,Christ Church Cathedral, SJE Arts at St. John the Evangelist, theJacqueline du Pré Music Building, and a number of other venues.

Our mission is to bring the verybest classical music to Oxford, in terms of both repertoire andinternationally renowned artists. In many respects, therefore, our not being tied to certain dates or to a particular venue is to ouradvantage, allowing us to make themost of all our artists’ availability.

We have our own ticket office for telephone bookings: 01865244806 and website for furtherinformation and online booking:www.musicatoxford.comThe Oxford Playhouse also sells a limited number tickets on ourbehalf.Rebecca Dawson

Music at Oxford welcomes back the world-classPhilharmonia Orchestra with three pillars of theGerman repertoire. Beethoven struggled tocompose the overture to his opera Fidelio, writingfour versions, of which no. 3 is considered thegreatest. Intense, dramatic and taut – it’s a fullsymphonic movement. Arabella Steinbacher willbring her ‘refined, instinctive playing’ (TheTelegraph) to Mendelssohn’s evergreen, muchloved violin concerto. Brahms’s Symphony no. 2,which he wrote swiftly over the summer of 1877while staying in Carinthia, will give a rousing, uplifting finale to the evening.

The VilliersQuartetIn their second year of the Radcliffe ChamberMusic Residency at the University of Oxford’sFaculty of Music, the Villiers Quartet presenttwo ambitious concerts as part of theircollaboration with Music at Oxford.

The first of our two concerts this seasonplaces the pure, clever structure of theFantasias of Purcell alongside a modern-dayequivalent – the Fantazia for String Quartetby Oxford composer Robert Saxton – a rich, emotive work whose quick-slow-quickpattern directly mimics Purcell’s own forms.

Then we go to the Nordic countries, forNielsen’s short but passionate piece composedfor the funeral of the famous Danish artist OlufHartmann, and Sibelius’s quartet, of which hesaid, ‘It turned out as something wonderful. The kind of thing that brings a smile to yourlips at the hour of death.’

The quartet’s second concert has a veryViennese flavour, ranging from Schubert’ssingle movement, said to be ‘...the onlymovement in Schubert’s instrumental work, prior to the “Unfinished Symphony”, whichprepares us for the greatness which burstsforth in that symphony’, through to Webern’searly and lushly scored Langsamer Satz(literally: ‘slow movement’). In addition, soprano Julia Sitkovetsky joins the players forSchoenberg’s other-wordly setting of StefanGeorge’s poetry in the Quartet no. 2.

Sean Shibe is definitely one to watch! The guitarist is much indemand at leading festivals, and brings an enticing array of musicto Music at Oxford from the 16th century through to several worksby 20th century British composers, who were inspired by themastery of the inimitable Julian Bream. Walton’s work was a fiftiethbirthday present to Malcolm Arnold; Britten’s work is a set ofvariations playing on the composer’s preoccupation with the nightand with dreams; Berkeley’s sonatina has become one of thecomposer’s most widely performed works since its premiere in 1958.

The Oxford Bach Choir haslong had a close relationship with the Mass, ever since it gave the work itsfirst Oxford performance back in 1903. Nicholas Collon is without doubt one of the UK’s mostexciting younger conductors, with a stellar career, and Music at Oxford is thrilled by his choice of repertoire for thisconcert with the marvellous CBSO. Sibelius’s King Christian IISuite is a stirring work which runs the full gamut of emotions, while his searingly beautiful 7th Symphony – though not‘unfinished’ like the symphony of Schubert – is unusual forbeing contained in one just continuous movement. For sheer bravura, not much beats Schumann’s Konzertstück –essentially a concerto for all four horns of the orchestra!
