Soon the shelves will be lined with Christmas decoration. Yup, it seems to come earlier and earlier every year. Well, we had another great year of rides, camp outs, and trips. I am happy to say I didn’t hear of too many issues. We had a couple of members who have been affected by the wildfires this year. Luckily, everyone made it out un- scathed to my knowledge. We had several members attend Gold Rush in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Next year, Gold Rush will be the closest it has been to Northern California ever. There were other people who helped out in the planning which took some of the burden off my back. I need to once again thank my staff for all of their support and assistance this year. Without them I could not do this job. Their help at the state ral- lies makes it much more enjoyable for Shelly and I. I especially need to thank Lynn Hollenback and Jana VanHousen. They are there by my side at every rally helping me but they also do a lot of planning and prep work before the rallies. I can't thank them and everyone else enough. As you can see, our numbers are getting smaller and smaller. The budg- ets to run events are dropping a little, however, we barely break even or lose money at nearly every event. Our funds in are accounts are slowly decreasing. Most chapter events are a thing of the past due to lack of par- ticipation. I would like to keep the ball rolling at the state level and we will discuss this more at Fall Fiesta at the business meeting. Your participa- tion and input is highly encouraged. The Northern Hub Au-

From the State Director’s Desk

By Dave Caudle, NC State Director

Here we are, already in Fall. Luckily, everyone made it out un-scathed to my knowledge. We had several members attend Gold Rush in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Next year, Gold Rush will be the closest it has been to Northern California ever. This is a great opportunity to attend a Gold Rush for the first or maybe the last time ever. Thank you to everyone who keeps GWTA going by attending events.

The Tahoe Camp Out was a success. This was the first year the State ran it after Chapter S folded. We sure missed seeing Dennis Therien and Christi Sonneborn and Michelle's s'mores. We broke even financially which was the goal. A special thank you to Mel & Marilyn Teigen for their article submitted for this newsletter. Thank you for the kind words for Shelly and I too. There were other people who helped out in the planning which took some of the burden off my back.

I need to once again thank my staff for all of their support and assistance this year. Without them I could not do this job. Their help at the state ral-lies makes it much more enjoyable for Shelly and I. I especially need to thank Lynn Hollenback and Jana VanHousen. They are there by my side at every rally helping me but they also do a lot of planning and prep work before the rallies. I can't thank them and everyone else enough.

As you can see, our numbers are getting smaller and smaller. The budg-ets to run events are dropping a little, however, we barely break even or lose money at nearly every event. Our funds in are accounts are slowly decreasing. Most chapter events are a thing of the past due to lack of par-ticipation. I would like to keep the ball rolling at the state level and we will discuss this more at Fall Fiesta at the business meeting. Your participa-tion and input is highly encouraged.

Thank you everyone again and we will see you at the World Famous Tor-tilla Toss.

By now we’re sure you have heard that next year’s Gold Rush will be in Medford, Or-egon. Just a hop, skip and jump away for most of us! We are definitely excited! The latest stats as of Thursday, August 25th for those registered to attend 2019 Gold Rush are: Region A – 21 members, Region B – 44 members. Total from all regions is 117 members meaning that Region A & B is taking the lead. C’mon folks, let’s make the numbers even higher!

There are so many places to visit, ride and explore in Oregon. It is definitely beautiful country so let’s show off our side of the US to GWTA!

CHAPTER REGISTRATIONS

Well, it's almost that time of the year again. Chapter registrations are due. The fees for this year are the same as last year - $100 for each chapter. Checks should be writ-ten out to “GWTA” and given/sent to your State Director preferably by November 20, 2018. This will allow time for your State Director to forward all the registrations to us so we can make copies for our records and send it to National prior to the November 30th deadline. As always, if National receives the registration fee after November 30th, there is a $25 late fee. The registration form can be downloaded from http://www.gwta.org/doc_library/taway_pdf/chapter_registration.pdf.

MEMBERSHIP RENEWALS

GWTA new and renewal memberships are still $50 per year. If you send your renewal membership directly to National, we cannot process a membership card for you until we receive an email directly from Judy Schaefer, the Executive Director, with all your information. However, if you send your renewal directly to us, we keep a copy of your check and form for our records, forward the originals to National and we will process your card. We ask that you give us several weeks to process your card as we try to do them in batches.

TOURING NEWS ARTICLES

Summertime is coming to an end and majority of vacation time has lessened and we know most of you have a memory or two to share of what you did this summer. Please share your memories and pictures, if you have them, with us via Touring News

If your chapter or state has an event coming up and would like to increase your at-tendance, post it up on Touring News.

If you have an idea or suggestion to share with other GWTA members, share it on Touring News.

This is YOUR online magazine so let’s help to build it. Please get your articles and/or pictures to Sarah Dumais Carpenter, TN Editor, at [email protected].

WAIVER INFORMATION – Just a reminder!

All GWTA meetings, events and activities are covered by 3rd party liability. Should you have a guest/visitor who attends a meeting and wants to ride with the group or if they will be attending a TA campout, they MUST sign a “Release and Waiver of Lia-bility” or else GWTA’s liability becomes null and void for that specific event. We know it might be awkward in asking a new person or feel that they might be offended, but please explain that the 3rd party liability covers the group as a whole and that safety is first and foremost with GWTA members as it is with all organizations. Again, as this can become a sensitive issue, please contact us directly to discuss this further.

The “Release and Waiver of Liability” form can be found in the National website un-der

http://gwta.org/doc_library/list.htm then look up “Release and Waiver of Liability.”

Take a little trip to Valley Forge in January. Hold a mus-ket ball in your fingers and imagine it piercing your flesh and breaking a bone or two. There won't be a doctor or trainer to assist you until after the battle, so just wait your turn. Take your cleats and socks off to get a real experi-ence.

Then, take a knee on the beach in Normandy where man after American man stormed the beach, even as the one in front of him was shot to pieces, the very sea stained with American blood. The only blockers most had were the dead bodies in front of them, riddled with bullets from enemy fire.

Take a knee in the sweat soaked jungles of Vietnam. From Khe Sanh to Saigon, anywhere will do. Americans died in all those jungles. There was no playbook that told them what was next, but they knew what flag they repre-sented. When they came home, they were protested as well, and spit on for reasons only cowards know.

Take another knee in the blood drenched sands of Fallu-jah in 110° heat. Wear your Kevlar helmet and battle dress. Your number won't be printed on it unless your number is up! You'll need to stay hydrated but there won't be anyone to squirt Gatorade into your mouth. You're on your own.

There are a lot of places to take a knee where Americans have given their lives all over the world. When you use the banner under which they fought as a source for your displeasure, you dishonor the memories of those who bled for the very freedoms you have. That's what the red stripes represent. It represents the blood of those who spilled a sea of it defending your liberty.

While you're on your knee, pray for those that came before you, not on a manicured lawn striped and printed with numbers to announce every inch of ground taken, but on nameless hills and bloodied beaches and swel-tering forests and bitter cold mountains, every inch marked by an American life lost serving that flag you pro-test.

No cheerleaders, no announcers, no coaches, no fans, just American men, delivering the real fight against those who hose to harm us, blazing a path so you would have the right to "take a knee." You haven't any ink-ling of what it took to get you where you are, but your "protest" is duly noted. Not only is it disgraceful to a na-tion of real heroes, it serves the purpose of pointing to your ingratitude for those who chose to defend you un-der that banner that will still wave long after your jersey is retired.

If you really feel the need to take a knee, come with me to church on Sunday and we'll both kneel before Al-mighty God. We'll thank Him for preserving this country for as long as He has. We'll beg forgiveness for our ingratitude for all He has provided us. We'll appeal to Him for understanding and wisdom. We'll pray for liberty and justice for all, because He is the one who provides those things. But there will be no protest.

There will only be gratitude for His provision and a plea for His continued grace and mercy on the land of the free and the home of the brave. GOD BLESS AMERICA!

Don’t forget Veterans Day Parade. Come and show your respect for those who have gone before, and those who still serve!

Camp Out by the Lake

July 26 – 30, 2018

Dave and Shelly Caudle were in charge of this camp out since Dennis was unable to attend. The group was moved from the F section to the E section and after spending time there the group liked the E section better and will be asking to return there in early August 2019.

The Goldwing group in attendance was fewer than in 2017 and the total number was close to the upper 20’s. A few came up from Sacramento for the Saturday lunch ride so the total for that lunch was 32 people. We ate at the Mexican Restaurant we normally go to in Incline Village but the group decided we should try another restaurant in 2019.

We had good weather and no rain with the highs in the mid 80’s while the Sacramento area was above 100 degrees. The evenings were cool for sleeping and there was very little wind. Marilyn and I were the only Chapter P members camping but Cesar and his friend Carlos came up on Saturday and joined us on the lunch ride. They came in the Corvette because the heat they would be going through on the way home would be around 100 degrees.

There was a campfire every night and the members all joined around that. On Saturday night we had s’mores and many people had Lacey do the s’mores for them. On Saturday night everyone brought their own meat and it was cooked there at the Campground. The salad, dressings, mushrooms (10 lbs.), corn on the cob and all other food items were provided by Northern California Goldwing. It was requested that we do this again in 2019, it went so well.

Dave had two large tent structures setup with picnic tables under them with plenty of seating for everyone. He provided all of the cooking facilities and they prepared the food that went with the meat. The sautéed mushrooms were excellent and there was plenty for all.

On Friday many went on rides in the area. Joanne, Buster, Steve, Ralphine, Marilyn and I rode around the lake. We went on Friday as we knew there would be more traffic on the weekend. The northern part of the ride was still very busy and it took us a long time to get through that section of the Lake. It was still a pleasant and beautiful day for a ride.

Some of the items discussed during this camp out were GWTA Gold Rush that is going to be in Medford, Or-egon in July 2019 and the campout in June that will be held in the Rogue River/Grants Pass area again. More information will be coming out on these riding events.

Several of us had to leave on Sunday because of Monday commitments. Most of those leaving left early be-cause of the heat predicted in the valley. It also got smoky on Sunday morning in the Lake Tahoe area. Marilyn and I left shortly after 7:30AM and we didn’t see the sun until we got south of Sacramento. We wore our Goldwing coats because it was cool all the way home. On Grant Line Road south of Sacramento the temperature got down to 68 degrees. The warmest temperature was just west of Placerville where it reached the low 80’s for a short time and then went back into the 70’s. We were home by 11AM and it was only 72 in Antioch – far lower than the forecast and it was because of the smoke in the air.

The people handling the Check-in process were well organized because Dave had worked with them prior to our arrival. We got our passes at the gate and didn’t need to sign anything as it was all previously setup with them. The process was smooth. Everyone at this Campout enjoyed their time there and the weather was great.

DIABLO VALLEY WINGS

Fourth of July Parade in Concord Chapter members Harry with his trike, Mel and Marilyn with their bike, and Leonard with his white trike waited to ride out in the Parade, entry #50. The City estimated the parade would last 90 minutes, but of course that was from 10:00 start to the end. The day’s temperature wasn’t too bad and everyone had a great time. Harry and Leonard joined the Diablo Valley Mustang club for brunch at Country Waffles following the Parade.
