A chapter of the Red Hatters, The Golden Girls met at Burleigh Heads in April for a luncheon get-together where costumes and foods starting with the letter ‘p’ produced much fun and laughter. Not familiar with The Red Hatters? They describe themselves as ‘a dis-organisation with “hattitude” for ladies over 50 to gather for fun and friendship.’ And the pert motto of The Golden Girls follows-on in the same cheeky style: ‘We don’t know where we’re going but, who cares? If it bothers you, get a GPS!’ The pandemonium of those words is patently pictured here, with The Golden Girls in their letter ‘p’ apparel. Left to right, a Peace Activist (so peaceful that she plumb forgot to place her placard in the picture); a playful penguin, positive despite having to pull its beak up so its ‘human’ face would appear; a pink-topped partier peeking-out from the rear; a pirate—most-pleasant, although missing her parrot; a clever paperback novel that got it back-to-front in the photo only; a pearl-adorned participant posing prettily against the pine, and a pampered princess with plenty of sparkles in the peak of her crown. Missing was the painfully-shy peasant who purposely passed on the publicity. To celebrate all the efforts of dressing-up to the letter ‘p’, a table of appetising letter-‘p’ treats awaited. These included pinwheel scones, ploughman’s lunch, pâté, pumpkin pie, and Pavlova. YOU weren’t imaginingthings if you happened tospot colourful super-sizedkoalas dotting Gold CoastCity during March and

IN a past edition of the Seniors Newspaper, readerswere treated to a list of seldom-used collective nounsthat possibly tested vocabularies and, more thanlikely, caused brows to furrow. The list continues here.Enjoy! You might have heard of a busyiness (or business) offerrets but what about a fesnyng of ferrets, a termwhich may have originated from a misspelling in theMiddle Ages? Then there’s a charm (or chirm) offinches; a stand of flamingos; a leash of foxes.A wedge of geese may sound odd while a tower ofgiraffes the perfect description, though some maychoose to refer to a corps of giraffes instead. Gnatsapparently come in clouds, or rabble if you wish, withgoats in a trip; gods of a particular mythology in apantheon; grouse in a covey; guineafowl in a rasp.Hares collectively are a down (or drove, flick or husk);hawks a kettle if flying in large numbers; hermits an

A collection of collectives continued...observance; hippopotamuses a bloat; hounds a cry;hyenas a cackle.Ibises come in colonies and iguanas in messes (wouldbe interesting to know the origins of this collectivenoun); jackdaws (of the crow family) in trains; jelly-fish in fluthers or smacks; kangaroos in mobs ortroops.Lapwings come in a deceit or a desert; leopards in aleap or a lepe; lions in a well-known pride or in thelesser-known sawt. Mallards come in puddlings, sordsor sutes and martens in richesse or richness. Molesstruggle (it seems) in a labour and monkeys in bar-rels, cartloads, troops or tribes; moorhens in plumps;mosquitoes in scourges (how true); mudhens in fleetsand mules in barrens. The English language never ceases to amaze, as thiscollection shows. Be sure to check future editions ofthis newspaper for more head-scratching collectives.

Koalas capture hearts and raise fundsApril. A total of 21 koalasmade up a unique ‘Ani-mals with Attitude Sculp-ture Trail’ that led fromHarbour Town in the north

to Coolangatta in thesouth. Academy Award-winning sculptor JohnCox teamed up with agroup of talented Austra-

lian artists to craft the eye-catching creatures, eachsporting individual de-signer coats. The main aims of ‘Animalswith Attitude’ were to raisenot only awareness, in afun way, of the endan-gered nature of the koalabut much-needed funds toensure vital work couldcontinue on the 7,000-plusinjured and sick animalsadmitted annually to theCurrumbin Wildlife Hospi-tal. The sculptures wereauctioned at the end ofthe exhibition with all pro-ceeds donated to theCurrumbin Wildlife Hospi-tal Foundation.

Pictured with one of the engaging koalas is a group of day-tripping friendsfrom Gold Coast City and beyond who, in true spirit, had a lot of fun travellingthe trail.

IF you are an employer or a worker in a businessthat recruits mature aged people, we want you totell us your story. If you are an employer, whatmade you decide to employ an older person? If you are an employee, how did you get the joband how is it all working out?The Gold Coast and Tweed Seniors Newspaperis starting a Business Honour Roll for local busi-nesses with a policy of employing mature agedworkers and your name could be one of the first.Let us list your business in our newspaper, asone of the ones that is leading the way in chang-ing business attitude to employing mature agedpeople.Email your contribution [email protected] marking thesubject matter as‘GCT - Business Honour Roll’ or mail to P O Box1062, Tewantin Q. 4565

THE CEO ofQueensland’s largest ap-prenticeship centre hasstated the case for chang-ing many employers’negative mindset thatmature aged workers of-fer only limited returns.Paul Miles, CEO of BUSYAtWork, a not-for-profitcommunity organisationwhose Head Office is atSouthport, said that withthe current skills shortagefacing Australia it is criti-cal that workplaces reskillmature aged workerswhile leveraging off a life-time of oftenunrecognised soft skills.BUSY AtWork employsclose to 200 staff across17 metropolitan and re-

Business needs older workersgional locations inQueensland and providesservices to about 38,000employers.Its mission is to promotetraining, employment andworkforce planning solu-tions to employed, under-employed and at-riskmembers of the local com-munities. And BUSYAtWork is showing theway in its own workplace.Their oldest employee isturning 73 and 38 per centof their workforce is ma-ture aged. Paul Milespointed out that goodbusiness recognises thesense of striking the bal-ance between the raw tal-ent of youth and the ex-perience of mature-aged

workers “The hurdle forchange is with industrynot jobseekers,” he said“A well implementedworkforce strategy thatengages mature aged work-ers will improve morale, teamwork and productiv-ity. We’ve known this butwhy has acceptance beenslow and attempts to takeaction even slower? “Stud-ies have shown that olderpeople stay in their jobslonger, are strongly com-mitted to company perfor-mance, are more produc-tive, have lower levels ofabsenteeism and are moreflexible.”They are moreloyal, have considerablelife skills, cost less to re-cruit and provide greater

return on investment. Youhave to ask yourself, what’s so hard to under-

stand about the benefitsthat a mature workerbrings?”

HOW employers canbenefit from hiring and re-taining mature-age staffand results from the Ex-perience+ CorporateChampions program. With the ageing of theAustralian population, itis now more importantthan ever to encourageexperienced workers toremain in the workforceand to pass their skills andknowledge onto others. The long-term success ofany business depends on

the ability to tap into adiverse body of talent, knowledge and skills.Age-friendly recruitmentpractices can widen theapplicant pool to helpyou find the best person.Mature-age workers havebuilt up knowledge andskills during their time inthe workforce, and usingthese skills in workplacementoring programs canreduce staff turnover, train other employeesand increase staff morale.

Mature-age workers cansave your businessmoney on absenteeism, training and recruitment.Early results from the em-ployers taking part in theExperience+ CorporateChampions programshow that: Employeesgave advance notice ofretirement intentions, andemployers put in placearrangements for employ-ees to work differently asthey transitioned into re-tirement (e.g. mentoring,

skills and knowledgetransfer, health andsafety management, flex-ible hours or part-timework, working fromhome).Employers were able tomake arrangements totransfer skills and knowl-edge, modify ways ofworking and limit the im-pact on the organisationor business when experi-enced staff retired.Employers were betterequipped to attract older

workers for specific clientservice preferences andreap the benefits of re-cruiting older workers(e.g. reliability and diver-sity of experience). Mick ex-plains that the Austra-lians had to retreat toTobruk (Libya) on the ar-rival of the Afrika Korpsunder German FieldMarshall Erwin Rommel,‘The Desert Fox’, a skilleddesert warfare com-mander.Mick’s Division (now 2/11 Field Ambulance – 9thDivision) arrived inTobruk on 10 April 1941;the Siege of Tobruk be-gan the next day. With itsdeep water harbour it wasvital for the Allies’ de-fense of Egypt and theSuez Canal to holdTobruk.Tobruk was subject to re-peated enemy ground as-saults and almost con-stant shelling and bomb-ing but the Australiansheld fast and fought hard.History records that Will-iam Joyce, ‘Lord Haw-Haw’, a broadcaster ofNazi propaganda (laterhanged for High Treasonin England) called theAustralians ‘poor desert

SOUTHERN Gold Coast 60 & Better wasa hive of activity recently when some30 students and staff from GriffithUniversity’s Centre for Environmentand Population Health visited theElanora centre. The majority of the students are in Aus-tralia for a six-month Public Health Lead-ership program funded by AusAid.While in Australia they participate informal university courses and specially-designed short courses and have ex-posure to Australian public health pro-fessionals and some community groupsthrough guest seminars and field vis-its.Visiting from all over the world includ-ing Indonesia, China, Vietnam,Bangladesh, Tanzania and Ghana; stu-dents from Hong Kong and Angolawere also part of the group.Dr Shannon Rutherford, Senior Lecturerand Deputy Director – Training andCapacity, Centre for Environment and

OLDER Australians watched from the sidelines asthe Federal Government celebrated the roll out of therenamed National Disability Insurance Scheme inSouth Australia today.Under the new DisabilityCare Australia scheme, any-one who acquires a severe and profound disabilitybefore age 65 will receive full government supportover their lifetime. However, those Australians who acquire exactly thesame disability at age 65 - mums and dads, friendsand work colleagues – will be shunted into an ill-equipped, under-resourced, user-pays aged care sys-tem.“The government’s talk of ‘ending the cruel lottery’rings hollow amongst older Australians,” said Na-tional Seniors chief executive Michael O’Neill.“The ‘cruel lottery’ is a system that will see peoplewho acquire a disability one day over 65 miss out onthe support given to all other Australians”.“Today’s 65-year-olds are an integral part of the mod-ern family - they’re working, in good health, provid-ing informal childcare and still paying taxes”.“We understand the budget pressures but, in a de-cent society, age is no reason to exclude anyone fromvital support services”.“At the very least, the over-65s should be includedin the launch sites to test their impact on budget pro-jections”.“The silence from both the Government and Opposi-tion on this issue is shameful,” said O’Neill.According to the Department of Health and Ageing,in 2008-09 the average age of entry into residentialaged care for women was 84.3 and rising – that’stwenty years more than the NDIS age limit. Aged careis no place for a 65-year-old.

Overseas students visit ‘60 & Better’

Population Health, School of Environ-ment, Griffith University spoke on how‘the opportunity to participate in theexercise class and to have wonderfulconversations and delicious food madethe visit happy and rewarding.’ Dr Ru-therford emphasised that the group was‘so happy to share our stories of age-ing and healthy ageing from differentcountries’ and to hear thoughts aboutthe critical role of prevention and theimportant concept of healthy ageing.‘Our visits to “60 & Better” are a realhighlight for our students and staff; itis always a real inspiration for us andaligns very much with the discussionsabout health promotion and determi-nants of health that we have in ourclasses,’ continued Dr Rutherford. For more information about SouthernGold Coast 60 & Better Program Inc,phone (07) 5525 6466; email:[email protected];visit www.60bettergoldcoast.com.au.

My daughter told me thatthis new seat would wash and dry me with just thepush of a button, she said that she had purchasedone for her family and they loved it so much that theyjust had to get one for me to!Well, I don’t know how I ever lived without it… All Ihave to do is sit down on my nice warm seat and goto the loo, once I am finished I simply press a buttonand I get a warm water wash and warm air dry!Now my toileting is a time of luxury, it is the bestmother’s day present I have ever got!

GOLD Coast City councillors are report-edly facing a cut of up to $350,000 totheir divisional coffers and could beforced to hand back any money theydon’t use as Mayor Tom Tate and histeam look to tighten the budgetary belt. Each year the 14 divisional councillorsreceive $850,000 for use on communityinfrastructure and events of theirchoosing.Divisional funds were last year slashedfrom $870,000 to $700,000 but city coun-cillors have since voted to increase thefigure back up to $850,000.Mayor Tom Tate has previously hintedhe would consider scrapping divisionalfunds entirely and wants councillors totake all projects for funding to the fullcouncil to be judged “on merit’’.However, the Bulletin understands it ismore likely councillors will have theirdiscretional budget slashed back to$500,000 in a bid to create budget sav-ings at city hall. This could mean community projectssuch as the $120,000 annual kerbsideclean-ups held in some divisions willbe made biennial, while minor infrastruc-ture works could be delayed indefi-nitely. A cut to this funding also im-pacts on maintenance and repair worksto local parks, some of which may haveto close. Mudgeeraba councillor GlennTozer said he supported divisional bud-

Council slashes divisional fundsgets but was in favour of increasedtransparency over what the funds werespent on.“The community expects us to be main-taining things and serving them andpreviously councillors have not beenas diligent with their funds,” he said.“Now we are trying to be more prag-matic because the community caresabout transparency and nobody wantsus to have money without a plan forhow to use it.”More than $14 million has already beenslashed.Southport councillor Dawn Crichlowsaid a “use it or lose it” policy, oncemooted by Cr Tate, would preventwaste.“Submitting our lists during budget dis-cussions is a responsible way of plan-ning our year ahead,” she said.“Any money left over can then be putstraight back into whole-of-city fund-ing so that it can be used appropriately.“We can use or lose it to projects thatneed it.”City councillors have been asked by CrTate to propose how they would spendtheir divisional funds if they had either$500,000, $750,000 or $1 million.Cr Tate will bring down the budget inlate June.Courtesy: Andrew Potts, Gold CoastBulletin

A RESEARCHER from Queensland University ofTechnology (QUT) is seeking participants for twostudies investigating the factors that impact onhealthy sleep in older adults.PhD candidate, Alicia Allan, from QUT’s Centre forAccident Research and Road Safety - Queensland(CARRS-Q), is conducting a number of studies, in-vestigating the factors that impact on healthy sleepin older adults, with a particular focus on the impactthat partners have on each other’s sleep. For the Sleep in Senior Couples Survey, Ms Allan isseeking couples over the age of 65 to take part in asleep survey. The survey asks questions about sleep, health and daily habits, and takes up to an hour tocomplete. Both members of the older adult coupleswill need to complete the survey - either online or inhard copy. Participants need to be aged 65 or older;be living at home in the community; have not beendiagnosed with sleep apnoea; and not have sus-pected or diagnosed cognitive impairment.Ms Allan said it was a myth that older adults neededless sleep as they age.“People seem to need between seven and nine hoursof sleep each day, even as we get older,” Ms Allansaid. “However, it can become harder to get a goodnight’s sleep - we know that about half of older adultsreport having symptoms of insomnia at least a fewtimes a week. “Older adults tend to have more com-plicated sleep patterns and more fragile sleep, whichcan be affected by things like medical conditions andlifestyle changes.”Ms Allan said bad sleeping habits tended to be asso-ciated with poor mental and physical health out-comes. She wants to know how many people experi-ence problems with their sleep, and what this meansfor their partner or spouse.Ms Allan is also looking for people who provide careat home for a family member with dementia to takepart in a separate study. The Sleep in Carers Study isinvestigating sleep in people with dementia and theirprimary carers.“Sleep can be a real issue for those with dementiaand their carers, and this study hopes to better un-derstand sleep in a home care setting. The results will

What’s keeping older couples awake at night?help in developing interventions that better meet thisgroup’s needs,” she said.As part of this separate study, participants will berequired to wear an activity monitor, log their dailysleep patterns for two weeks and complete a ques-tionnaire. Anyone who is the primary carer for some-one with dementia and is interested in participatingin the research, can read the participant informationsheet at www.carrsq.qut.edu.au/sleep/Sleep_study_flyer.pdffor some more detailed infor-mation about the study. You can also contact AliciaAllan directly via email at [email protected]; orby phone: 0477 325 479.Both studies are funded by The Wesley ResearchInstitute.

UNITINGCARE Community’s Seniors Enquiry Line help seniorsdeal directly with issues that other organisations won’t or simplycan’t, including risks to their safety. Direct human contact is para-mount for many seniors who can be deterred or confused by auto-mated phone systems when looking for support or advice. An example of Senior’s Enquiry Line’s ability to defuse a risky andpotentially dangerous situation is the story of Mrs B.Mrs B rang Seniors Enquiry Line extremely distressed afterdiscovering her home had been broken into while she was tendingto her back garden. Once inside, Mrs B faced the horrifying realitythat an intruder had entered her home while she was merely metresaway, stealing her purse and house keys. The fear Mrs B felt at the thought that this intruder could re-enterher house at any time, could use her bank cards or steal her iden-tity, was very real. IT is surprisingly easy to not remember whether youhave done something. Most of us experience thisfeeling every day, but this can be life threatening ifthe “something” happens to be your daily prescribedmedication. When I raise this with my Mum her comment is,”I liketo be in control of my medications”. No problems ,but when I see her talking to herself asking, “Did Itake that green one this morning” I suggest it wouldbe better to stick to the crossword where a mistakecan be rubbed out, rather than continue to takechances with her tablets, where a mistake could meana visit to the emergency ward.A simple system that solves this is what we call,“Medication Packing” or “Webster Care”. This in-volves your tablets packed in a safe, secure, sealedpack, checked by a pharmacist and if necessary de-livered to your door for local residence. The packclearly shows “Breakfast, lunch, dinner, bedtime” andonce the medication is pushed out of the blister it isobvious the dose has been taken. The Pharmacist will liaise with your Doctor to ensurethe pack is up to date. ACCORDING to a 2011 Survey commissioned by Ar-thritis Australia, arthritis is Australia’s major cause ofdisability, affecting 19% of the population.Herbs have a long and effective history in helpingmanage the chronic pain of arthritis. Herbal medicineprovides comfort and patient empowerment.Arthritis is a multi-factorial disease, and many organsystems are involved. Therein lie the benefits. Herbalmedicines support the patient and provide allevia-tion of symptoms. Green lipped mussel, celery, gin-ger and olive leaf extract reduce inflammation effec-tively. One of the most exciting developments in jointpain is new research exploring the effects of turmeric.Turmeric mimics the pathways of prescription strengthnon-steroidal anti-inflammatories, without the sideeffect profile. Cumerone is a patented extract of tur-meric which allows a readily bioavailable dose of tur-meric to provide relief from pain, reduced inflamma-tion and support to the cartilage structure within anaffected joint. For more information on managing yourarthritis pain, seek advice from an informed healthprofessional such as your pharmacist.Gerald Quigley is a qualified Medical Herbalist andCommunity Pharmacist. ONE in 8 Australianwomen will developbreast cancer before theage of 85. The risk of de-veloping this disease in-creases with age. Whilstthe average age at firstdiagnosis is around 60years, figures show onequarter of new breast can-cer cases occur in womenaged 70 years and older.Almost half of the femaledeaths from breast canceroccur in women in this agegroup.Confusion exists aboutwhether it is worthwhilefor women over 70 to con-tinue to participate inbreast cancer screeningand if they are eligible toreceive free breastscreensthrough the nationalscreening program. TheBreastScreen AustraliaProgram strongly recom-

Should women over 70 attend breast cancer screening?mends all women agedbetween 50 and 69 yearsattend for a breastscreenevery two years as re-search clearly shows thebenefits of screening forwomen in this age group. The evidence about thebenefits of mammo-graphic screening in re-ducing breast cancerdeaths for women 70years and older is lessstrong, but indicatesscreening is probably stillbeneficial for older womenwho are in good health.Evidence has confirmedthe benefits of screeningfor women up until theage of 74. For womenaged 75 years and over, however, evidence for thebenefits of regular screen-ing in improving women’slength and quality of life

is limited, despite olderwomen having a high riskof breast cancer. Olderwomen may experiencethe immediate downsidesof screening (ie. discom-fort, anxiety, side effectsof tests and treatment),but may be less likely toexperience the longer termbenefit of improved sur-vival.BreastScreen Australiaprovides freebreastscreens to women70 years and older, with-out breast cancer symp-toms.Whilst eligible, thesewomen are generally notactively encouraged toattend and the onus is onindividual women to ar-range their appointmentwhen due. QueenslandHealth’s BreastScreenQueensland Program rou-tinely sends letters invit-ing women to return fortheir two-yearly rescreenuntil at least age 74. Apart from thebeaches there’s a livelycafé culture and lots ofinteresting boutiques, and a really good deli. And just up the road isBangalow, which offersmore of the same in atreechange environment. But there’s much moreto experience in thehinterland behindByron. There are anumber of small villageslike Federal and TheChannon dotted amongthe hills, and scenerywhich rivals anythingyou can find anywherein Australia. Some of it issimply breathtaking, andexplains why so many“expats” from big citieshave settled here forlifestyle reasons.A weekend, or betterstill, a midweek break

VARANASI is said to beat least 3500 years old. Some say it could haveexisted for over 5000years. It is one of the old-est continuously inhab-ited cities in the world andthe oldest in India. In 1897Mark Twain said ofVaranasi “Benares is olderthan history, older thantradition, older even thanlegend and looks twice asold as all of them put to-gether”. My tour groupjourney to the city startedin Agra, where we pre-pared to take the over-night train to Varanasi.Following an early dinnerour bus took us to thestation, which was on theedge of the city. The traf-fic was heavy and at somestage we actually stoppedfor a long time. Eventu-ally our two Indian guidesleft the bus and appar-ently told the policemanon point duty that therewas an important diplo-matic officer on the bus.Like magic our bus wason its way. Now that isthe story our friendlylaughing guides told us,but I wondered if somebaksheesh was quietlyhanded over to smoothour bus through. On ourarrival at the station por-ters loaded two casesonto their heads and pro-ceeded to the platform. The very long train pulledinto the station and wefound our reserved com-partments. Four berths toeach curtained compart-ment. Fortunately myberth number 39 was alower berth. Our cleansheets and pillow casewere wrapped in brownpaper parcels. It was abit like camping withmuch laughter and cama-raderie. None of us un-dressed and I don’t knowif we actually had a fullnight’s sleep, before itwas time for our Austra-lian guide Peter to tell uswere pulling into Varanasi, where we arrived at 6.15am. Once again we trailedafter the porters, againcarrying two pieces ofluggage on their heads. The station was the realIndia, people sleeping onthe floor, lots of litter andsome of our group evensaw a few rats. As our bus took us to

our hotel we could seethat this city was morerun down than cities wehad seen previously. There was more disorder, more rubbish. Pigs wererummaging through therubbish as well as cows, dogs and goats. From ourbus we were not really ef-fected. That came later aswe walked the labyrinthof the streets of the oldcity. Once again our ho-tel was excellent. Duringour tour of the city wewere taken to see some silk

weaving which is a majorindustry there. Then, latein the afternoon, it wastime for us to go to MotherGanges for the eveningceremonies. Our bus onlytook us part of the way, then we were transferredinto rickshaws to proceed, weaving our way throughthe heavy traffic....noise,noise, noise from the hun-dreds of horns from mo-tor bikes and tuk tuks. Itwas then that we walkedthrough the narrowstreets to the Ghats alongthe Ganges, where we wit-nessed the priests per-form the “Ganga SevaNidhi” that is the “wor-ship to fire” ceremonythat is performed everyevening. Ghats are steps of stoneslabs along the river bankwhere pilgrims performritual ablutions. The ghatshave individual namesand we were heading forthe DashashwamedhGhat, which is the mainand probably the oldestin Varanasi on theGanges. The area waspacked with pilgrims. Thewomen in their mostcolourful saris were allgrouped around their per-sonal tiny altars decoratedwith flowers and candles.Fortunately we were privi-leged to be seated in a re-served area. I expect, forWestern tourists wherewe had an excellent viewof the celebrations as didthe worshippers in boats. There were seven plat-forms, each with a smalltable with pictures of dei-ties surrounded by flow-ers. Finally all the prepa-rations were over and theseven priests came to thealtars. There was muchchanting and singing fol-lowed by bell-ringing andthen incense burnerstwirled by the priests. Af-ter this cones of fires wereswung by each of thepriests. And lastly a burn-ing brazier. The ceremonywas very impressive andwe were able to see ev-erything happening evenif we couldn’t follow theprocedures. The crowds started todissipate and we walkedback through the laby-rinth of tiny streets pass-ing more cows that weresettling down for thenight, all the time carefullywatching where we putour feet ! We had dinnerat a restaurant overlook-ing another part of theriver. Next morning weleft the hotel early andwent back to the sameghat where we met ourboatman before sunset. From our boat we couldsee that many many of thepilgrims were bathing, ofcourse wearing theirclothes, dipping downunder Mother Ganges. Asthe sun rose there was

great jubilation from thecrowds on the edge of theriver. After leaving the boat,we walked back along thenumerous ghats passingwhere bodies are cre-

mated. As well as burn-ing by wood fires, thereis also a cheaper optionof cremation in the elec-tric furnace at fraction ofthe cost. We made our way back

along the tiny streetspassing a couple of cowshugging the wall. There is no doubt thatvisiting Varanasi is part ofthe spiritual journey asso-ciated with India.

& LeisureHOLIDAYMENTION Berlin tomost older Australiansand they will conjureimages of World War IIdestruction and theinfamous Berlin Wall. Most likely, they willimagine a dull, drabplace with few modernamenities. The reality isthat modern-day Berlinis a vibrant bustling citywith few obvious scarsof the atrocities of thepast. With a populationof over three millionpeople, it is the capitalof Germany and itslargest city. Berlin is aworld city hostingrenowned universities, modern museums andart galleries, conventioncentres, sports arenasand featuring over 800hotels catering to aburgeoning touristtrade.Nevertheless, if onelooks, it is not hard tofind reminders of darkertimes. One of these isthe path traversed bythe Berlin Wall. From1961 to 1989 thisstructure completelyseparated East andWest Berlin and was thecause of manydesperate attempts toescape from theoppression of Commu-nist-controlled EastBerlin. Some smallsections of the wall stillremain as grotesque

reminders of what usedto be.Dotted lines trace itstrail, along roads, across footpaths, eventhrough new buildings. The concrete sectionsthat comprised the wallwere designed so thatvehicles could not pushthem over. On theeastern side was a wideno-go death strip whereany trespassers were atrisk of being shot.Another well-knownlandmark from the war isCheckpoint Charlie. This was a popularcrossing point duringthe Cold War and wasthe site of manydemonstrations andconfrontations. Anearby museum housesreminders of conditionsduring the years of thewall. It depicts some ofthe numerous methodsused to try to escapefrom the east, ingeniousand horrifically graphicreminders of theoppression anddesperation of thepeople. They escapedin car petrol tanks, stuffed in car seats, inshopping trolleys, inloud speaker boxes, byflying fox cable, in awelder, by hang glider,by canoe and kayak inthe Baltic, and bytunnels under the wall.Over 5000 were suc-

cessful.Perhaps the mostsobering reminder ofthe war is the HolocaustMemorial. This strange placeconsists of 2711 solidrectangular concreteblocks mounted in rowsand columns, some tallsome lower, like abizarre city of the dead.Under it is the Memorialto the Murdered Jewsof Europe. Nobodytalks in here, it is a verysombre place.Over five million Jewsperished at the hands ofthe National Socialistregime.A mere stone’s throw

away is the site ofHitler’s Bunker wherehe died in 1945.It is impossible to visitBerlin and not relivesome of its history. However, there aremany other highlightsthat instil joy andhappiness. TheReichstag building isthe traditional seat ofthe German parliament. It features a huge glassdome with free public

access and providingmagnificent views ofthe city. TheBrandenburg Gate is aniconic landmark ofBerlin. Built in the late18th Century as atriumphal arch it hasbeen fully restored. It is closed to vehiculartraffic but visitors arefreely able to wanderaround itscobblestoned precincts.Adjacent to this

landmark is Unter denLinden, a tree-linedstreet that was onceBerlin’s premier prom-enade.Meandering throughthe city is the RiverSpree. Numerous boatsoffer visitors sceniccruises along its course. For around €€ 6 a relaxingone-hour tour takes inmany of the city’shighlights. One ofthese is Museum Islandwhich houses fivemuseums forming aUNESCO WorldHeritage site. Also onthe island is BerlinCathedral, a formeremperor’s ambitiousProtestant attempt torival St Peter’s Basilicain Rome.Nearly a third of Berlin’sarea is composed offorests, parks, gardensand lakes. TheTiergarten is a hugesprawling park coveringover five squarekilometres near the citycentre. It is the site ofthe towering VictoryColumn, a 70-metre tallspire topped by agolden statue ofVictoria. The more

energetic visitor cantrudge up a narrowspiral staircase to thetop for stunning viewsacross the park and city.Over 150 museumsawait visitors. Morethan 50 theatres providelive entertainment.Berlin has 12 restau-rants listed in theMichelin guide as wellas a virtualsmorgasbord ofgastronomic delights ofevery possible cuisine. The city is ashopaholics paradisewith many fashionboutiques offeringhigh-end bargains.Berlin has a temperateclimate with warmsummers and coldwinters. From late May to earlySeptember visitors canexpect mildtemperatures. ON a visit to the marketsor grocery store at thistime of year you arelikely to see chestnutsfor sale. The question is:do you know what to dowith chestnuts once youbuy them?‘Chestnuts AustraliaInc’ in Myrtleford,Victoria has a compre-hensive website that notonly answers manyquestions aboutchestnuts but explainshow to prepare and cookthis tasty food. Lots ofappetizing recipes, fromsoups to stir-fries todesserts, can also befound on the site: http://www.chestnutsaustralia.com.au/home.html.To get you started, hereare some easy tips for‘first time chestnuttasters’, courtesy of theSydney Markets:Chestnuts have twoskins. One is the hardouter shiny brown shell

U3A

and the other is theinner thin skin known asthe pellicle. Oncecooked, the creamy-white flesh is similar intexture to a roast potatowith a delicate, sweet, nutty flavour. The firmer chestnutsfeel, the fresher they willbe. Look for even-sizednuts which feel heavyfor their size, withundamaged, firm shells. To avoid chestnutsdrying out, store in anairtight container, paperbag, perforated plasticbag or a speciallymarked ‘chestnutstorage bag’ (whereavailable) in the crispercompartment of therefrigerator. Chestnutsare best if consumed

within three weeks ofpurchase. One kilogram of chest-nuts yields approxi-mately 700g of shelledchestnuts. Before cooking, themost important step is tocut the shell to preventthe nut exploding whilecooking. Some peoplecut a slit across the faceof the nut; others cut across into the flat-end.
