Who We AreWe’re a network of men and women from Ridgewood, Ho-Ho-Kus, Glen Rock and surrounding communities who meet every week to plan how to make a positive difference in our community—and our world. We are all volunteers so we take time from our work or weekends to help the communities where we live and work. Every dollar we raise is dedicated to supporting local and international needs.

What We DoSince the Ridgewood A.M. Rotary Club was founded 30 years ago, we have raised and disbursed well over $1 million in grants to local, national and international causes. Our grants focus on education, student leadership development, health and human services, and aid to the needy and underserved in our community. We also do hands-on work to help area families in need through such organizations as Family Promise of Bergen County, the Social Service Association of Ridgewood and Vicinity and Habitat for Humanity. On the international front, we have traveled to Haiti and other countries to support orphanages and schools, and assist with medical missions to train doctors in developing countries to perform sophisticated surgery.

Proud Part of Rotary InternationalWe’re part of Rotary International, the world’s first service organization, which was founded in 1904 and has 1.2 million members in 200 countries. If all Rotary members got together in one place, we’d be the size of a major city. But because we are all over the world, Rotarians can help solve some major problems—like prevent the spread of such diseases as polio and malaria, provide clean water, help communities build schools and educate children, or provide people with support to start small businesses and emerge from poverty. Rotary International helped establish the United Nations, grants more scholarships than any other private charitable organization and is the driving force behind eradicating major diseases worldwide. For more information on Rotary International’s latest initiatives, please visit www.rotary.org.

How you can helpSupport our primary fundraisers, including our annual raffle calendar, benefit dinners and events, and campaigns for donations of food, clothing and other supplies for the needy. You also are welcome to join us in hands-on work to assist those in need in our community.

On the Cover Since our club meets at 7:30 a.m. on Thursdays, our mascot is a colorful rooster. This year, he is shown in full

distance running gear, in honor of members who have taken on the challenge of running marathons to raise funds for Rotary initiatives. We meet at Roots Steakhouse, 17 Chestnut Street, Ridgewood. Guests are welcome.

To learn more about us Visit our Web site, www.ridgewoodamrotary.org.

Club Treasurer Jay Fowler undertook months of disciplined training to run the New York Marathon and raise funds to support need-based college scholarships for local high school students. Jay completed all 26.2 miles through New York’s five boroughs, raising over $9,000 to help fund our scholarship grants. Two other club members joined him in the marathon, President-Elect Tammy Butler and Ryan Mitchell, an experienced marathoner who was Jay’s training advisor and has also run marathons to raise funds for worthy causes.

Thanks to Ulrich our kitchen is now very beautiful, inviting and perfectly reflects the style of our century-old home! We started with a challenging space that was a ‘jumble’ - both aesthetically and functionally. Our Ulrich designer created a new layout that completely transformed it. The whole Ulrich team was extremely professional and the craftsmanship was excellent. The job went very smoothly, and was finished on time. Rotary—Making a Difference Nationally and InternationallySupporting education and literacyBetter readers become better students: As part of Rotary’s nationwide effort to support literacy, each fall our club members personally deliver free ency-clopedic dictionaries to the 800 third-graders in Ho-Ho-Kus, Glen Rock and Ridgewood public and parochial area schools. Studies show that students who have their own dictionaries become better readers and are more successful in their studies. We also support Read to Know, an organization that provides age-appropriate books and volunteer readers to pre-schools in Hackensack and Paterson.

Helping scholars in need: Our club has awarded over $285,000 in scholar-ships to 120 local high school students. We provide $1,000 a year for four years to each of three students each year. Because scholarships are so essential to many students and their families, we have begun a special endowment campaign to expand our scholarship program in future years.

Developing tomorrow’s leaders: The Ridgewood A.M. Rotary Club sponsors three community-service organizations for youth—Interact at Ridgewood High School (RHS) and React Clubs at Benjamin Franklin and George Washington Middle Schools. These clubs give students the opportunity to learn organization and leadership skills by helping charitable causes in our area. The RHS Interact Club has 300 energetic members who spearhead doz-ens of major community service projects each year.

Addressing homelessness and hunger: We’ve launched a perpetual food drive where members bring donations of food and cash to our weekly meetings. These donations are delivered to the Social Service Association of Ridgewood and Vicinity (SSA), which assists families in need in eight surrounding towns. Each summer, when food pantries are often low on supplies, we run a ma-jor food drive at a local supermarket. Last summer, we collected 500 bags of groceries for SSA.

The club also supports Family Promise, a sheltering program for homeless working families. We host families at local churches, preparing dinners, enter-taining children, and helping with homework.

Last spring, we packed hundreds of meals kits for Feed the Starving Children, which aids the poor in crisis areas worldwide.

Hello Mr. Stout,

Thank you for donating your time this morning to speak to our students about the value of service. Thank you also for the student dictionaries. The students have been excitedly using them all day! We appreciate the Ridgewood AM Rotary once again coming and speaking to the students of Ho-Ho-Kus.

Attached are some pictures from today.

Sincerely,Ali Auteri

The Ridgewood A.M. Rotary Club personally distributes 800 encyclopedic dictionaries to third-graders in Ho-Ho-Kus, Glen Rock and Ridgewood. Here, Chris Stout (center) and Scott Johnson (right) present dictionaries to Ho-Ho-Kus students.

Homes, shoes and coats: Working with Habitat for Humanity, club members have helped convert a large but rundown home in Waldwick into a beauti-fully refurbished multi-family home for lower-income families. We also have helped with construction of townhomes in Paterson. Last winter, we provided 500 winter coats for the needy in Paterson, and in the prior year, we collected 13,000 pairs of shoes for Soles4Souls, a charity that supplies shoes to people in extreme poverty in Asia and Africa.

Gift of Life: The Ridgewood A.M. Rotary Club is an active participant in Rotary’s Gift of Life program that provides life-saving heart surgery to needy children from around the world. We have sponsored and/or hosted 19 chil-dren and young adults since the start of the program. We also support medi-cal missions to developing countries where U.S. surgeons teach local doctors advanced heart surgery.

In case of disaster: When Hurricane Sandy struck the Tri-State area three years ago, we donated funds, materials and supplies to aid in sheltering and rebuilding efforts. One of our members who is a contractor organized the reconstruction of municipal facilities in Moonachie and Little Ferry. Another member whose firm does interior finishing work rebuilt the kitchen of the Little Ferry Firehouse.

Last fall, the eye of Hurricane Matthew, a category 4 storm, swept through Les Cayes, Haiti, leaving massive destruction in its wake. For many years, the Ridgewood A.M. Rotary Club has assisted Pwoje Espwa (Project Hope), a large orphanage, school and medical center near Les Cayes for many years. Dormitories and school buildings were severely damaged or destroyed. Within a week, the club raised $25,000 toward Pwoje Espwa reconstruction, thanks to donations from members and matching funds from one member and friends. Supporting education in India, Cambodia and Kenya: Our club received a Rotary International grant to provide buses that transport disabled students in India to a vocational school. We have partnered with other charitable orga-nizations to support worthy projects overseas, helping fund new schools in Cambodia and Kenya. Our club also has contributed toward scholarships that allow students from Haiti, Kenya and Afghanistan to attend U.S. colleges.

Gathered in the early morning sun, ready to help construct the new playground at the Windsor Bergen Academy, are Ridgewood A.M. Rotarians (L-R) Anne Bosch, Elise Merhige, Steve Castellucci, Mary Ann Copp, Jay Fowler, Betty Wiest, Lisa Sammataro and Neal Lewis. Not shown is Vernon Reed. They joined 125 members of the community and KaBOOM!, a non-profit organization that provides the planning and equipment to make safe, fun playgrounds available for children.

October 27 is a very special day for Beni Koduah of Ghana and his family. Six years ago on that day, Beni had life-saving heart surgery, thanks to Rotary’s Gift of Life program and our sponsorship and hosting of Beni and his father, Cosmos, for three months during the pre-surgery evaluation, hospital stay and recovery process. Today, Beni is a healthy 12-year-old who is doing well in school and enjoys playing soccer.

The Ridgewood A.M. Rotary Club greatly appreciates our 2017 Raffle Calendar Sponsors who make many of our projects and grants possible. We hope you will be sure to patronize these outstanding,

community-minded businesses and organizations.
