COVID 19 SUD & GBV

CRISIS INTERVENTION ACTION

PLAN

The Nationwide Hard Lockdown in response to the COVID -19 pandemic brought about an alarming high number of des-perate calls from both the Street Based people sector and High-Risk Communities for URGENT Substance Use Disorder (SUDs) and Gender Based Violence(GBV) help. A call to action was immediately sent out to the entire Substance Services Sector in the Western Cape-4 organisations, 2 individ-uals and 6 social Work volun-teers stepped forward and we’re truly proud to say that STAND was among those who stood up and reported for duty

We had to move at lightning speed and established a crisis intervention task team of professionals who immediately got to work.

Result! The development AND implementation of the COVID-19 SUD & GBV Crisis Intervention Action Plan for Street Based People and High-Risk Substance Users at the temporary home-less Safe Space at Paint City and Belville Haven shelter. SUD’s are essentially a medical condition and require a holistic health and humane approach to treatment.

TAKING ACTION

World Federation Against Drugs –Gender Working Group

STAND is one of the few organisations on the global level

that specifically addresses the situation of women facing

addiction, and is a founding member of the WFAD GWG

initiative directly addressing the illicit drug use/addiction

among women, GBV and its correlation with illicit drug use

and access to health care, treatment and recovery services

for women. Whilst advocating for women’s rights and

contributing to the global drug policy debate.

UNITED NATIONS 63RD CND – VIENNA, AUSTRIA

What a truly LIFE CHANGING experience to have been invited to present at the 63rd Commission on Narcotic Drugs at the united Nations in Vienna in March this year together with Chantelle Pepper Chair of the Western Cape Substance Abuse Forum! Our most sincere appreciation goes out to the World Federation Against Drugs (WFAD) and United Nations Office against Drugs and Crime (UNODC) for the invitation and for full sponsorship of the week-long conference.

STAND’s participation not only provided us with the opportunity to share our ground breaking approach to treating SUDs in Rural communities within the South African context, it also provided us with a global platform to raise the BARRIERS TO TREATMENT FACING OUR SOUTH AFRICAN WOMEN IN ADDICTION.

Many countries are facing the same issues of GBV, Femicide, Intimate Partner Violence (IPV), women as main care givers to children to name only some of the issues, which all present as BARRIERS TO TREATMENT for our women. We also have unique cultural and educational needs, in addition to the SIGNIFICANT reality of intergenerational trauma in South Africa.

WE WENT GLOBAL WITH WFAD

STAND COMMUNITY BASED TREATMENT (CBT)

WE ARE MOVING TO A FULL MOBILE OUTREACH ALCOHOL AND DRUG TREATMENT MODEL.

The STAND CBT is a registered evidence based, eclectic, trauma informed and fully mobilized SUD Treatment service with a strong focus on the inclusion of families and significant others into the treatment cycle. The full sweep of the Treatment interventions are provided directly in the Community or at the Street Based Safe Sites.

▪ Ten-week treatment cycles will be provided in each town – 5 x Treatment cycles per year ▪ Much greater focus on the inclusion of family & significant others in the treatment cycle ▪ Trauma & GBV informed primary health care, evidence-based model ▪ Inclusion of Gender specific treatment and support (including GBV trauma treatment) ▪ Greater focus on psycho-education, destigmatization, decreasing social exclusion

& assisting with more robust integration with community resources

We’d like to say a fond farewell to Jean-Maré Januarie who left STAND at the end of April 2020 to spend more time with her children and pursue her career in a generic social work context. We are very appreciative of her input into the Pilot CBT Program and on behalf of all of us at STAND, we wish her all the very best for the future. Her lovely smile and warm heart will be missed.

THERAPISTS WITH HOOVES

FOCUS ON OUR GBV RECONNECT EQUINE ASSISTED THERAPY PROGRAM

Equine-assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) is especially effective in helping people through trauma, anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, behaviour regulation, coping skills, to name but a few. RECCONECT provides GBV survivors with the opportunity to debrief their trauma and begin the process of healing and self-discovery. Understanding the role of the horse in treating GBV survivors requires understanding the nature of the abuse itself, as survivors tend to display a myriad of symptoms, such as powerlessness, revictimization, problems with communication, and trust as well as low motivation, self-esteem, PTSD, depression, and neurological effects. STAND’s unique approach to working gently and effectively through trauma with the survivors and horses to promote healing and growth is achieving significant results.

“It was these horses who

taught me that it was ok to be

afraid, but that it wasn’t ok to

remain silent and protect the

men who hurt me.”

This young woman was completely committed to retaining her independence, and after identifying her goal to once again be employed during a mentorship session in the CBT Treatment cycle; she approached her previous employer who agreed to re-employ her when seasonal work became available again. This did not get this young lady down! In her recovery, she kept her commitment to herself and got a job as a cleaner in the EPWP program. Her family saw a complete change with her taking responsibility for both her life and the life of her child, and the once broken relationship with her family and especially with her stepfather was completely restored. She is loving motherhood with turnaround and renewed outlook and sense of purpose for her life.

HOPE, RECOVERY AND REBIRTH

This beautiful woman enrolled into the Reconnect Program broken, lost, afraid and without any sense of hope. She struggled to connect with any one horse and moved between all the therapy horses for most of the sessions, pretty much a metaphor of what was happening in her life. Towards the end of the program, she formed a strong bond with one horse and worked solidly through her boundary work, ultimately taking up a leadership role and realising that she holds the power to follow her dream. This dream happened to be a strong conviction to work with the elderly in a frail care centre. With the help from Olympians Social Development (our partner NGO), she has since graduated from the Fisantekraal Centre of Development and is now fully employed.

WE’RE ACTIVELY INVOLVED IN THE Western Cape Street Children’s Forum (WCSCF) FOR THE PAST 5 YEARS PROMOTING CHILD RIGHTS

STAND adheres to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and also plays an ACTIVE role as a Board Member in the WCSCF for the protection of children, by serving as a unifying voice to debate, advocate and lobby around common issues that involve or affect children and youth. The WCSCF believes that no child should be living, working, or begging on the streets and that everything should be done to prevent this.

RESEARCH

The Crisis Intervention Action Plan is being perceived by Professor Leon Holzhausen, PhD Associate Professor – UCT and Dr.Donald Skinner, an academic and Director of the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) as potentially an historic intervention, and both believe it should be shared as widely as possible. The research of this intervention will be done collaboratively and they will continuously be working with the team to support the ongoing documentation, development and implementation of the intervention. This research will be taken through ethical review, and to publication. Watch this space…!

When our team was called upon to help with SUD services to 84 street-based people locked down in the Callie de wet Hall in Robertson, we jumped right in! Apart from trauma debriefing, early recovery and relapse prevention group work, our team worked together with the Centre Manager, Vincent Andries , DSD (Department of Social Services) and the DOH (Department of Health) to ensure basic health and social services were met. Our sincere appreciation to the Graham & Rhona Beck Development Trust for their donation to provide essential items to these precious souls.
