Colossians 3:16

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom;teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and

spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.”

I pledge allegiance to the Lord Jesus Christ, Whose name I love and Whose praise I sing. As a faithful sailor in Patch the Pirate Club,

I will do my best to serve my Savior and obey His Word.

Welcome aboard, sailors!

We are now safely on PART TWO of the JOURNEY! In this segment of the adventure, you will learn the meaning of WORSHIP as you sing a new song called Worship the Lord.

Next, you will learn of the One Who sacrificed His life for you and how to show kindness and be SACRIFICIAL to others in your own life as you sing and rehearse Behold the Lamb.

Finally in this Sailor Log, we are reminded of the STRENGTH and power of our great God and how we can be strong in the Lord. No matter the circumstances of life, we can Trust in the Lord Forever! “The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in Him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise him.”

Don’t forget to keep up your daily “Quiet Time” with God, and I hope to see you in club each week. Keep singing for Him, and don’t give up the ship!

Rejoicing in the Lord,

Ron Patch HamiltonPhilippians 4:4

The sailors in Patch the Pirate Club meet every month for four con-secutive weeks. At the end of the month they perform the song they have learned. A sailor must attend each of the weekly meetings and the perfor-mance and must complete the entire month of My Quiet Time Devotions to earn the award pin given at the end of each month.

If your child misses one meeting during the month, he may make up the absence by quoting the make-up memory verse to a club worker. If he misses more than one meeting and wishes to make up absences, the captain may (if he or she determines an absence to be legitimate) assign the child a make-up memory verse. The only way to make up incomplete My Quiet Time Devotions is to complete them and have them checked by the club captain or co-captain.

If a child is faithful in attendance and in completing his devotions for an entire year (and has thus earned all nine of his award pins), he is eligible to receive a Faithful Servant Award at the end of the club year. A very special Super Sailor of the Year Award is given to one boy and one girl who have exhibited a consistent testimony and faithfulness through-out the club year. The club captain will keep attendance records for your child. See the captain if you have questions concerning your child’s award eligibility.

Note: The award pins are to be attached to the sailor hat in neat rows on either side of the logo badge. See the previous page for a complete illustration of the uniform and awards.

It is important for Christians to be faithful in having a daily quiet time with God. This year we are going to help you develop this habit. A quiet time is a time when you listen to God and let Him talk to you through His Word, the Bible. It is a time when you praise God, tell Him you love Him, and thank Him for things He has done for you. You also pray about things you or someone else needs.

If you can read the Bible, you can have your quiet time all by yourself. This is the best way to grow up in your Christian life. If you cannot read the Bible yet, ask your father, your mother, or some older person to share your quiet time with you every day. Pick a time and place where you won’t be distracted. It should be a place where you can see well and where you can comfortably write.

Here is a plan for you to follow for your quiet time. You will need a Bible, a pencil or pen, and your Sailor’s Log.

1. Look up the verse in your Bible.2. Fill in the blanks in My Quiet Time daily devotional guide.3. Read the explanation of the verse.4. Think about what the verse means.5. Ask God to help you apply the lesson to your own life, and use the prayer

time suggestion as a guide when you pray.

I will have my quiet time with God _________________________.

My quiet time place will be ______________________________.

Song of the Month: “Worship the Lord”

Patch Fun Song: “A Respectable Pirate”

Children’s Hymn of the Year: “All Hail the Power”

Memory Verse: Exodus 34:14—“For thou shalt worship no other god: for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.”

Make-up Memory Verse: Psalm 29:2—“Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name; worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.”

Sailor Scripture Memory: Each week, read and review the passage below in order to quote the entire passage in the final performance of the year. Quote along with Patch the Pirate on the Learn at Home CD.

Hebrews 11:1-16—“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained a good report. Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh. By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for be-fore his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God. But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith. By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went. By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise: For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God. Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised. Therefore sprang there even of one, and him as good as dead, so many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable. These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country. And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned. But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.”

SPEAKING PARTS FOR THE PERFORMANCESailors 2-4 are randomly scattered across the platform. Sailor 5 is off to the side of the platform. Sailor 1, acting as a reporter, has a microphone and may wear a hat. For added effect you may have a sailor using a video camera act as the camera man.

Reporter (Speaking to the camera or the audience.) Good evening! This is (reporter’s name), and I am here at (church name) interviewing random people to find out what worship is. (Turns to nearby Sailor 2.) Excuse me, but could you tell me what worship means to you?

Sailor 2 Hmm, let’s see. I believe worship is something that only grown-ups do. That’s right. It’s something that grown-ups do at church, usually in the church auditorium.

Reporter So, worship must take place inside the church building?

Sailor 2 Yes, I believe so.

Reporter (Turning to Sailor 3.) And what do you think worship is?

Sailor 3 (Speaking “pompously.”) Worship is sitting very still with your eyes closed and thinking good things about God.

Reporter (Thoughtfully.) I see. And you (holding the microphone out to Sailor 4), what is worship to you?

Sailor 4 I believe that worship is the meeting we have at our church on Sunday morning. You know—the Worship Service.

Reporter So, worship to you is a church service?

Sailor 5 (Running up to the reporter and the others being “interviewed.”) Wait a minute. Stop this interview! Hey, friends, don’t you remember what we learned about worship this month in Patch Club? What you just said isn’t worship!

Reporter I see you have a different opinion of worship.

Sailor 5 I don’t have a different opinion—I have the genuine Bible teaching on worship. According to John 4:23-24, worship is to be done in “spirit and in truth.” Worship begins in the soul—the heart, the spirit, or “within me”—as Psalm 103 describes it.

Reporter So, everyone can worship God?

Page 16: GODLY CHARACTER SERIES SAILOR’S LOGTime Devotions is to complete them and have them checked by the club captain or co-captain. If a child is faithful in attendance and in completing

16 Worship

Sailor 5 The Bible commands all Christians to worship God. That includes kids! But we can only truly worship God if our hearts aren’t holding on to sin. Listen to Psalm 24:3-4.

Sailors 2-5 (Recite together.) “Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord: or who shall stand in his holy place? He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart.”

Sailor 4 That’s right. I remember now! True worship begins in a Christian’s heart. It can be shown in an outward expression, or it may be expressed inwardly in our deepest emotions.

Sailor 3 And, we should worship each time we meet at church; but it can also take place wherever we are and at all times of the day or night.

Reporter And there you have it folks. That’s the real truth about worship. Goodnight!

Boys (Recites.) Exodus 34:14—“For thou shalt worship no other god: for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.”

Girls (Recites.) Psalm 29:2—“Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name; worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.”

Choir (Sings.) “Worship the Lord”

WHAT IS WORSHIP?“What does worship mean?” Mrs. Parker asked her Sunday school

class. The children looked at each other. They knew that the word worship was in the Bible—they had heard it many times. Their pastor even called the church service a worship service. But what did worship really mean? None of them had an answer.

Do you know what worship is? This week as you have your quiet time, you’ll learn from the Bible what true worship is. As you learn about worship you’ll be able to worship God in a way that pleases Him and helps you grow.

Psalm 95:6—“O come, let us ___________________ and bow down: let us

_______________ before the Lord our __________________.”

In Bible times it was the custom for people to bow down to the ground when they were in the presence of a king or an important person. They did not just bow their heads, they crouched down on their knees and put their foreheads on the ground. Sometimes they laid flat on the ground with their faces in the dirt!

Why would a person bow down this way? Bowing down like this was a picture. When the person bowed, he was saying with his body that he knew the king was in charge and that he was his lowly servant. It was an act of obedience and humility.

Read today’s verse again. Right there next to the word “worship” are the words “bow down” and “kneel.” Worshiping God is something Christians do to show God that they know He is in charge and that they are His humble and obedient servants. Have you ever thought of worship in this way?

Tell God that you know He is the King of your life. Bow your heart to Him, and tell Him how much you love Him and want to obey Him.

Job 1:20—“Then Job arose, and rent his ________________, and shaved his

_____________, and fell down upon the _______________, and worshipped [God].”

Job was a great, rich man. But one day, everything was taken from him. His children were killed, and all of his possessions were stolen or ruined. Job had nothing left. But Job believed in God. He knew that God was in charge of everything that happened to him. Job tore his clothes, shaved his head, and worshiped God.

Worshiping God is telling God that He is great and powerful and that you will honor Him even in the middle of trials. It is understanding how much God loves you and that He wants the very best for you. Job’s story shows that Christians can worship God even when sad things happen to them.

Thank God for His love for you, even though you are so small and weak compared to Him. Ask Him to help you worship Him each time you pray.

2 Kings 17:36—“But the Lord, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt

with great _______________ and a stretched out arm, him shall ye __________,

and him shall ye worship, and to __________ shall ye do sacrifice.”

God did very great things for the Israelites, His chosen people. He saved them from their enemies and led them through the desert to the promised land. He fed them, gave them fresh water, and even made sure their shoes and clothes did not wear out! And they were people just like you.

What did God ask of the Israelites in return? He asked them to fear (respect) Him, worship Him, and give sacrifices to Him. To worship God was a command from God. God has done many wonderful things for you as well. The command to worship is for all God’s children. Are you obeying God’s command to worship Him? Next week in your quiet time, you’ll learn various ways you can worship your Heavenly Father.

Thank God for the example of Jesus. Ask Him to help you do and say only the things He wants you to do and say.

Matthew 15:25—“Then came she and ______________________ him, saying,

______________, help ______________.”

A poor woman had a daughter who was filled with an evil spirit. This mother heard that Jesus was working miracles and healing people. Could He heal her daughter? She found Jesus and followed Him around. The disciples wanted to send her away, but Jesus loved her, as He loves all people. He would not send her away. The woman came and fell down at Jesus’ feet. She worshiped Him, believing that He could help her the way no one else could. Then she said, “Lord, help me.” She knew there was nothing she could do to help herself. Jesus lovingly spoke to her and healed her daughter.

Worshiping God is realizing that there is nothing you can do to help yourself. You are a sinner, deserving nothing. And yet, God loves you; and He has the power to help you as no one else can. Coming to God and worshiping Him in this way gives Him pleasure. The Bible teaches that He loves to give good things to His children. Do you come to God like this mother, worshiping Him and asking Him to help you?

Tell God that you know you can do nothing to help yourself or to make yourself good. Ask Him to help you and thank Him for His love toward you.

Psalm 100:3—“Know ye that the Lord he is _____________: it is he that

hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his _________________, and the

_______________ of his pasture.”

Worshiping God is realizing Who He is and what He means to you—and then telling what you know to God. David knew this truth, and much of the Psalms

“That’s crazy!” you say. “I’d never do that!” Of course you wouldn’t. But many times when Christians try to worship God, they do something a lot like that. They fail to come to God with a heart that is clean from sin. They bring the gift of worship—but they are covered with the filthy rags of unconfessed sin.

God loves holiness and purity in His children. The “beauty of holiness” in today’s verse refers to the beautiful clothes the priests wore into the temple to worship and serve God. When you worship God, worship Him in your very best spiritual “clothes.” Ask God to forgive you for your sins against Him. Then worship Him—“in the beauty of holiness.”

Ask the Holy Spirit to tell you of sins you have not confessed. Take time to ask God to forgive you. Then worship Him with a clean heart.

John 4:23—“But the ______________ cometh, and now is, when the

____________ worshippers shall worship the Father in ______________ and

in truth: for the _________________ seeketh such to worship him.”

Jesus taught that God was looking for true worshipers—those who worshiped God sincerely from their hearts. That’s what “in spirit and in truth” means. God’s children can worship God wherever they are, whether they are in church or on the playground.

Are you worshiping God sincerely from your heart? Do you humbly tell your Heavenly Father how great He is compared to you? Do you bow down to Him in your heart and pledge to be faithful and obedient to Him? If you do these things, you’re truly worshiping and pleasing God.

Take time to think about all you’ve learned about worship this week. Put what you’ve learned into practice by worshiping God in your prayer time today.

WAYS TO WORSHIPTry to think of different ways you can communicate with others. You

can talk, write, draw a picture, sing a song, or act out what you want another to understand. If you know sign language, you could even communicate that way. Just as there are many ways to communicate with others, there are many ways we can worship God. Remember what worship is? It is telling God how great He is and bowing your heart to Him in humility and obedience. This week as you have your devotions, you’ll learn about different ways you can worship every day.

Deuteronomy 26:10—“And now, behold, I have brought the firstfruits of the

_____________, which thou, O Lord, hast given me. And _____________ shalt

set it before the Lord thy God, and ________________ before the Lord thy God.”

The term “firstfruits” means the first part from the harvest of a crop. Suppose a farmer planted a field of corn. After weeks of caring for that corn while it grows, the farmer sees that the first ears of corn are ready to be picked. These first ears of corn are the first fruits of the crop.

God taught the children of Israel to give the first fruits of their crops back to Him. When the Israelites did so, they were acknowledging that God had given them all they had and that they trusted Him to meet all their needs.

Today’s verse shows that when the Israelites gave their first fruits to God, it was one of the ways they were worshiping Him. You can worship God by giving to Him as well. You can give an offering at church or give your time and energy to help others. Giving to God should be a regular part of your worship.

Ask God to help you find ways to give to Him. Thank Him for all that He has given to you. Tell Him you trust in Him to provide your needs.

Psalm 100:4—“Enter into his _____________ with thanksgiving, and into his

courts with ______________: be thankful unto him, and bless his ___________.”

When was the last time something really good happened to you? Something really good happened to Abraham’s oldest servant in Genesis 24. Abraham sent the servant to find a wife for his son, Isaac. The servant went on his way, praying that God would help him find the right girl. One day at a well, the servant found the girl God wanted to be Isaac’s wife. God answered the servant’s prayer in a wonderful way. As soon as he realized what God had done, the servant bowed his head and worshiped God (Genesis 24:26). The servant was thankful!

When God does something good for you, stop and take time to worship Him and tell Him how thankful you are. Thanksgiving is a way of worshiping God—telling Him how great and loving He is for meeting your needs and wants. Today’s verse says that you should go into God’s presence with thanksgiving. Is thanksgiving a part of your worship?

Use your prayer time today to do what today’s verse says: “Be thankful unto him [God], and bless his name.”

Psalm 77:11-13—“I will remember the ______________ of the Lord: surely I

will remember thy ___________________ of old. I will meditate also of all thy

work, and talk of thy _________________. Thy way, O God, is in the sanctuary:

who is so ________________ a God as our God?”

Do you ever stop to think about what God has done for you? Just the amazing fact that God created you is something to think about. The writer of today’s verses says that he will remember and talk about what God has done for him. He goes on to say, “Who is so great a God as our God?” This writer is worshiping God.

Thinking about God and about what He has done is one way of worshiping God. Meditating on God and the blessings He has given to you will bring joy to your heart as well as to God’s heart. When your day is gloomy and full of trouble, thinking of God and His care for you will remind you of all the blessings He has given. When you are in God’s Word during your quiet time each day, your study and meditation on Him is a form of worship.

Ask God to help you meditate on Him and what He has done for you. Ask Him to help you to talk to others about His works, just like the writer of today’s verses.

Psalm 138:1-2—“I will _________________ thee with my whole heart: before

the gods will I _____________ praise unto thee. I will worship toward thy holy

temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou

hast ________________________ thy word above all thy name.”

Everyone loves to be praised. Doesn’t it make you feel good when your teacher tells you how neatly you did your homework or when a friend tells you that you look nice? God loves to hear you praise Him when you talk to Him and when you talk to others about Him. Praise is another form of worship.

David must have been bursting with joy when he wrote today’s verse. God had answered his prayer and had given him great help in a difficult time. David’s heart was full of praise as he worshiped God with this psalm.

Whether you feel joyful or sad, you can praise God as you worship. Praising God for who He is and for what He has done will help you remember that He is in control of your life. Praising God will help you to trust Him more, instead of worrying about your problems. Worshiping God with praise is good for you, and it pleases your Heavenly Father.

Praise God for what He has done for you today. Thank Him for being with you all the time and for listening to you when you talk to Him.

Jeremiah 15:16—“Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy

____________ was unto me the _________ and rejoicing of mine heart: for

I am called by ________ name, O Lord God of hosts.”

In Bible times, God’s children didn’t have very many copies of God’s Word. Therefore, the people memorized large portions of the Bible so that they could think about it and have it in their minds all the time. Those who loved God were hungry for His Word. On some occasions, the people would stand all day and listen to the priests read the Word of God.

In today’s verse, the prophet Jeremiah says that God’s Word was the “joy and rejoicing” of his heart. He was worshiping God in the way he received God’s Word. When you’re hungry for God’s Word and you’re excited to read and obey it, you’re worshiping God in your heart.

How often do you sit in church hearing God’s Word, but not really listening? How often are you watching the clock, eager for church to be finished so you can do something else? This attitude of ungratefulness is sinful. God wants His children to be hungry for His Word. He wants them to have an open heart, eager to receive His Word. Receiving God’s Word is another way to worship God.

Ask God to help you love His Word and hunger for it. Thank Him for giving you the Holy Spirit to help you understand what the Bible says.

“Joyful, joyful we adore thee!” sang Ellen as she made her bed. Her mother smiled in the next room. It was nice to hear Ellen worshiping God as she worked. Was she worshiping God? Yes—even though she was working, she was worship-ing God by singing to Him. Music is another way you can worship God.

The children of Israel worshiped God in a beautiful way with their music. Today’s verse talks about singers and trumpeters. Even the simple family ceremonies of the Jews involved singing.

Singing lifts your heart and changes your attitude. What you sing about will be what you think about. What songs do you hum or whistle as you go through your day? Make sure you include songs about your Heavenly Father and His Son, Jesus. Worship the Lord with music while you work!

Thank God for the gift of music. Ask Him to help you worship Him by singing to Him as you go through your day and even if you wake at night.
