“Bethel …God’s Beach House, where the Son always Shines”
JUNE/JULY2014 NEWSLETTER
God’s Lighthouse at the Beach
Missions Minutes A Church on the Go The Gershwin song says, “Summertime, and the
living is easy…” That’s something to look forward
to in the weeks to come. I know I look forward to
the change of pace that comes in the summer, and
I hope you do too. But a different pace at Bethel
doesn’t necessarily mean less ministry. In fact
some of our summer ministries can only happen in
the summer because of their intensity and time
constraints. While some churches almost shut
down during June, July and August, except for
weekly worship; it excites me that Bethel gets
busy in the summer.
Here are a few of the things we have to look for-
ward to between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
Confirmation will be celebrated on Pentecost
Sunday, June 8th. We have a larger than
usual class this year with two girls and ten
boys. Keep them in prayer as they prepare
to profess their faith in Christ.
Vacation Bible School: Bethel’s halls will ring
with laughter, as more than 100 children
discover Jesus’ one-of-a-kind love June 23-
26.
Youth Choir Trip: Our student musicians from
J-Crew and YM2 take “Stomp and Praise” to
our church friends in Pennsylvania the
weekend of June 28th.
Youth Mission Trip: This summer we’re going
to Rutland, Vermont in early July. Twenty-
eight youth and adults have volunteered
themselves as Christ’s ambassadors as they
serve the poor in the Granite State.
Antique Show and Sale: Save the dates of
July 10, 11, & 12 for the 55th for this church
wide fundraiser that benefits the entire Be-
thel Family.
Curiosity Shop: Concurrent with the Antique
Show in Fellowship Hall, there will be a
Curiosity Shop in and around the Parsonage
Meeting House.

The Bethel Bowler's
Team, made up of Mary
and Jerry Graczyk, Pam
Monti, and Elizabeth &
Phil Fields, once again
participated in the
bowling event for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Sussex
County. We were joined in the event with the team
of John Schroeder representing Shore Bank. It was
a lively time with the bowling balls hitting the pins
(for the most part), lively
conversations, cheering, and genuine a feeling of
true "kinship" for this incredible cause.
In conjunction with this event I would like to share
a few thoughts from Ray Quillen which I received
this week:
"Just wanted to let you know that the Bowl for
Kids' Sake event last Wednesday was a big
success in that we raised $28,759.00 which was
a record for Sussex county and more than
$7,000. than last year's total which was a
record to that date. I want to thank all of you
for your participation and support because it is
very important to our success and our ability to
keep our mentoring
programs going throughout the county".
Sincerely, Ray
Ray also stated that they have begun "thinking
about ideas that would make it better" for next
year. This gives all of us a chance to think about
participating next year. Gather some friends from
work, in your neighborhood, or at church. Let's get
some teams going to join this mentoring program
for children in need in Sussex county. BBBS makes a
HUGE difference in the lives of children and their
mentors. Let's just "DO IT!"

Confirmation-Pentecost
Christmas, Easter, and Pentecost are the
three great festivals of the Christian Church.
At Bethel and elsewhere it is the custom for
the Confirmands to profess their faith in
Christ at Pentecost, the ‘birthday of the
church.’ While Pentecost will be celebrated
at all services on June 8th, Confirmation will
be at the 9:15 service.
This year’s class is large and we ask that you
begin to pray for them as they prepare to
take their vows. This year’s Confirmands are:
Shauna Brittingham, Cyrus Conner, Ashley
Dickerson, Justin Fisher, Zachary Gardoski,
Jake Hoffpauir, Josh Hoffpauir, Austin Men-
des, Ross Moshier, Christopher Shea, Freddie
Sposato, & Caden Steele.

Adult Mission Trip: Fifteen Adults will be going
as Volunteers in Mission to work with UMCOR
(the United Methodist Committee On Relief)
in Colorado where flooding last summer has
still left people homeless.
Chris Faircloth will be serving on staff with
Group Work Camps all summer providing
support for mission teams from around the
country at a job site yet to be determined.
Brooke Wright continues The World Race, an 11
month mission trip around the world.
Wishing you a blessed summer,

men that perform maintenance
and minor repair projects for
those in the church community
that need assistance. The group
meets the first Saturday of the

completion of breakfast we perform whatever
“jobs” we have.
If you have a need contact the church office as it is
the collection center for requests. If you would like
assistance leave your name, your preferred method
of contact and what assistance is needed. Someone
from the Bethel Band of Brothers will be in contact
with you.
Anyone interested in being a part of this group is
welcome. Special talents not required but you
should have a desire to help others.

THE FELLOWSHIP DELI
OPENING SOON!
They’re here!
They’re here!
The sign-up sheets for the Fellowship Deli
that all of you have been waiting for are
now in the rear of the Sanctuary and the
Fellowship Hall.
The Fellowship Deli will be open for business
July 10th through July 12th from 11 AM until
2 PM. During the days of the Antiques Show,
we sell sandwiches, salads, desserts and
beverages to those who attend. To make
that happen, a team of people is needed to
help serve, make the sandwiches and salads,
work as cashiers and donate desserts for
sale. Helpers are also needed to set up the
lunchroom, display the desserts and clean-
up at the end of the day. If you are able to
serve in any capacity or donate desserts,
please see the sign-up sheet and volunteer
for a time that fits your schedule. Thank
you for your support. For more information,
call Florence Sulitzky or e-mail at fdevon-
Volunteers are still needed at the shop.
Those interested may call any weekday
between 10 am and 3pm. Our number is
644-0171. Better yet, come visit the shop
and apply in person. If you are unable to
volunteer, your donations of items to sell
is greatly appreciated. Call the shop for
details.
In the near future, we are planning to
clean the kitchen thoroughly. If there is
anything near and dear to your hearts in
the refrigerator or freezers, please
identify it or it will be thrown out.

Ray’s Ramblings
Family/Youth Events:
July 2nd , Starts our Wednesday
Beach Bible study days!
Meet in the Parsonage @ 10:00
and be picked up at 2:30
Fuse Small Group
6:30-9:00 every Sunday evening
this summer stating on June 8th!
Hope to see you there.
Hello Bethel!
Well the school year is winding down and the Summer is
getting fired up. I love the summer. Well I don't love the heat and
all the “visitors” that clog our roadways, but I love how it is a little
calmer and I love that the summer offers so many relational
opportunities with the students. With so much going on in kids lives'
throughout the school year, it is so hard to spend quality time with
them building relationships. But, once summer comes, the
opportunities are endless for just hanging out with kids and getting
to know them better.
Relationships are very powerful. Without question, the
entire Bible is about relationship: Our relationship with God and our
relationship with others. In Youth Ministry, relationships are the
most important thing in my opinion. When we build relationships
with kids, we open the door for deep conversations about life and
about spiritual things. These conversations don’t happen with kids
we don't’ know well.
This summer, we have a lot of things planned that will allow
us as adult leaders to hang out and get to know the students we
work with so much better. Starting on Wednesday, July 2nd will be
our first Bible study/ beach and pool days of the summer. Every
Wednesday throughout the summer, we will meet in the Parsonage
at 10:00am for a Bible study. Then at about 10:45 we will load up
and head to the Beach at the State park, a pool at someone’s house
or may be even head over to Joan Moore’s house on Red Mill Pond.
We will then spend the rest of the day hanging out, playing together,
eating together, and just having fun.
Also, this summer on Sunday nights we will continue with
Fuse, our young adult/young family small group. Fuse will be
meeting from 6:30-9:00 every Sunday this summer starting on
June 8th. We meet at the home of my Fiancé’ Katie Wright, and
anybody who considers themselves young or young at heart are
welcome! We always provide a meal, and we are going through a
Bible study called “the Gospel According to the Walking Dead”. It is
a great time by all. Please let me know if you are interested in join-
ing us or need directions to Katie's house.
Enjoy the first couple months of summer!

appear. I do believe it is God at work. Thanks to Kay
Poole, Mary Graczyk and Pam Monti who recently
refurbished our supply with Beef and Barley soup, Chicken
vegetable soup and Chicken, Noodle and Vegetable soup.
Yum! Just the right nutrition to help those under the
weather feel warmed and loved by Bethel. By the way,
this particular mission is open to anyone wishing to
participate. Just give Mary, Pam or me a call for more in-
formation. Thank you!
*Please mark the date of June 7th on your
calendars for our next Sew-a-Thon at Be-
thel's Parish Meeting House from 9:30 a.m.
until 4:00 p.m. The fellowship is just won-
derful, and the making of dresses is an
awesome happening. The dresses will be
going to disadvantaged little girls in our
world. Please bring a bag lunch; we'll furnish the drinks.
*UMCOR. the United Methodist Church On Relief has
recently put out a plea for more kits. This has happened
due to the recent events such as tornado outbreaks that
have wreaked havoc across the South and Midwest states
and of course because of the looming hurricane season
less than a month away. The Missions' Team at Bethel
has decided to help with this situation.
Beginning June 1st, we will be collecting items for the
Layette Kit for Newborns. Please be watching for more
information on this "drive". It will
be forthcoming. After all details
are decided on, we will be
publicizing the information to
you. UMCOR helps with relief
efforts all over the globe including the U.S. We have
helped with many disasters and we want to be on board
to help with this as well. Many thanks to all of you!
Jerry and Mary Graczyk report that about half of the Baby
Bottles have been passed out for the campaign for Sussex
Pregnancy Center in Georgetown. This is good news
indeed. Please, if you haven't taken a bottle from one of
the containers in the Sanctuary or Fellowship Hall do
so. We hope to have all baby Bottles taken, filled, and
returned by the end of June. It's a great place for your
extra change, cash or check.
Stephen Ministers
Stephen Ministers are members of the Bethel
congregation who are specially trained to provide
emotional and spiritual care to individuals facing a
crisis or difficult situation. They demonstrate
God’s love by coming alongside care receivers who
need a little extra support. Specifically, Stephen
Ministers:
Pray
Listen
Explore Feelings
Share Christ's love
Maintain confidentiality
Attend to the care giving process and leave
the results to God
Walk with people who are journeying to
wholeness
This is a ministry of Presence and
Companionship
How are Stephen Ministers trained?
After being interviewed and passing reference and
background checks, potential Stephen Ministers
must complete 50 hours of training. Topics include
the art of listening, Christian caring and prayer,
confidentiality, assertiveness, boundaries, how to
begin and end a caring relationship, depression,
grief and loss, ministering to the dying, job loss,
and divorce. Stephen Ministers participate in
monthly continuing education to help them grow
as Christians and as caregivers.
How Do I Make A Referral?
To make a referral (of someone who may benefit
from having a Stephen Minister) just follow these
four easy steps: Identify the person who is hurting
either you, a relative, or friend in need of
Christian care. Explain the benefits of having a
Stephen Minister come alongside them. If not you,
please ask the individual for permission to
refer them to Pastor Earle Baker, (302) 645-9426,
or Fred Bunch (Stephen Ministry Leader/
Coordinator) at (302) 645-4546.

milestones in their lives, and celebrate it with them. We want to
recognize all the graduates in the Bethel Family on June 17th.
Please help us include the graduate in your family. We would like
to know about all the graduates from High School, trade school,
nursing school, college, and graduate school. If your child, grandchild, niece or nephew is
graduating, or graduated in December-January, please let us know. Please call or email Donna
in the church office with the student’s name, the school they graduated from, the diploma or
degree they earned, and their major if possible. Thank you.

Teen Challenge
The beginnings of Teen Challenge were made famous
over 50 years ago by the book and movie, “The Cross
and the Switchblade” about David Wilkerson, a young
preacher serving Christ among the gangs of New York
City.
Today the ministry of Teen Challenge continues through more than 200 Residential Treatment
Centers offering “12 month programs for people of all ages struggling with life-controlling
addictions.”
On Sunday June 29th you will get to hear from men currently in the program at Delmarva Teen
Challenge in Seaford, DE. They will sing and share their testimonies in our services that morning.
While there are many good drug and alcohol programs available, the faith-based approach of
Teen Challenge has consistently been ranked the best in the nation, with 86% of its graduates still
being substance free a year after completing the program.

uestion: What famous Methodist is Black
Harry’s Spring on Pilottown Road named
after?
nswer: Black Harry’s Spring is
named for Harry Hosier, who was an early
Methodist traveling preacher.
Born in North Carolina, Harry was a
freeman in Maryland when he came under
the influence of Methodist Circuit Riders.
Although he was illiterate he was able to
memorize from hearing, long passages of
Scripture. First as an exhorter, and then as a
preacher, God used Harry to move the
hearts of many to receive Christ. Many
thought that Harry was one of the best
preachers among all the circuit riders.
Harry would have been in Lewes
several times in his travels and he and
his horse surely found refreshment at
the spring that bears his name.
By 1784, Harry Hosier was Francis Asbury’s
traveling companion (For safety Circuit Riders rarely
traveled alone). Harry was the only
African American to be at both the historic meeting
of Francis Asbury and Thomas Coke at Barratt’s
Chapel in November 1784, and at the Christmas Con-
ference in Baltimore that
December. In fact from Barratt’s Chapel,
Francis Asbury, had Harry Hosier take Dr. Coke on a
tour of the Methodist societies down the Peninsula,
across to Virginia, and back to
Baltimore in time for the Christmas Conference.
Dr. Coke said “I believe Harry Hosier is the best
preacher in the world.” And Benjamin Rush, who
signed the Declaration of Independence, and
founded Dickenson College said, “the best sermon I
ever heard was preached by Harry
Hosier.”
Report of the Capital Campaign Committee
We are happy to report that over $800,000 has been pledged or contributed to the Building Fund through the Capital Campaign. This reflects the responses of 136 individuals and families, as well as funds on hand, and other gifts prior to the be-ginning of the capital campaign. This is a very positive response to the initial stage of the campaign. We have learned that because of a computer error, many people did not receive the final capital campaign mailing, and did not receive a pledge card. If you need a pledge card, please contact Donna in the church office. If you are making contributions to the Building Fund and would like to have a special envelope, we have re-purposed some envelopes we had in storage. You can find them in the back of Fellowship Hall and the Sanctuary. Please take as many as you need. The campaign continues as we work toward our goal for much needed building improvements.
We are highly confident that work we have already done will qualify for Historic Tax Credits, which we can sell in 2015 for
$100,000 or more. We are also writing to friends we haven’t heard
from. We know there are plenty of good reasons people are waiting to respond. Some
have even told us they are waiting to see how much is needed to help us reach our goal.
And we are in contact with an out-of-town friend, who has been very generous in the past and hope to hear from that
person as well.
We also anticipate that a number of fund raisers will occur over the next three years to help us reach our goal. We know every fund raiser will not appeal to everyone, and that is perfectly fine. We hope, however, that at least one fund raiser will appeal to everyone.

The Sacrament of Baptism will be celebrated in June , July and August by prior arrangement with the pastor. To schedule a baptism, please contact Pastor Earle at 645-9426 or [email protected]
In a large congregation like
Bethel, many people help to
make things run smoothly. We
wish to thank these people for
their recent service to Christ
and Church.
Did you know Carolyn Garwood makes sure there
is a rosebud on the altar every time a child
or infant is baptized, and that Ann Wotring
prepares a handmade framed certificate?
Did you know the benefit Spaghetti Dinner &
Dessert Auction raised $1,849.50 for the
Youth Mission Trip to Vermont?
Proceeds from the dinner were $566,
and the Dessert Auction generated an
amazing $1,283.50! Thanks to Café Azafran
for their donation of food, and Mr. Knutsen
for his auctioneering talents.
Did you know that Lois Clark, assisted by Sue
Collins and Mary Conn led worship at Harbor
Health Care in Pastor Baker’s absence, and
distributed Communion that had been conse-
crated in advance?
Did you know that the Sunday School’s stained
glass offering jars have already raised over
$470 for stained glass
window repair?
Trustees Update:
The Gethsemane Window was re-installed just in
time for the Holy Thursday
Service, follow-up work on the woodwork,
and protective glass cover continued for two
weeks.
We have tentative approval to enlarge the park-
ing pad at the Parsonage Meeting House
Leaks in the sanctuary masonry have been
repaired.
Flowers will be planted in the beds on the
Chestnut and West 4th St. sides of the church
Progress is being made to bring natural gas to
the Church and parsonage meeting house.
The Hope House was open for people to walk
through on May 18th.
Do you eat at Ocean Grill, Lewes or Ocean Grill II
in Longneck? Would you like to help contribute to
the Capital Campaign Fund? Simply write Bethel
Church on the top of your check and 10% of your
check will be donated to Bethel Capital Campaign
Fund ! Ruth Ann Baker made us aware of this at
the April Elizabeth Circle meeting. Mary Conn
followed through by contacting them and we are
set up at both restaurants! They send a check
directly to the church quarterly thought the year.
THIS IS ON GOING!!! Eat, sign and support Bethel
and local business.
The Women’s Ministry is now accepting donations
for the Curiosity Shop which will be running during
the Antique Show in June. Clean out your closets,
attics, basements and bring us your gently used
items! We kindly ask that you do not donate baby
furniture, electronics, bedding, or clothes (we will
accept children’s clothes ages newborn-6X).
Please call Linda Corcoran at 684-1199 or Patti
Jackewicz at (302)542-3913 to make arrangements
to drop off your donations. Thanks for your
support!
THANK YOU !
Women’s Ministry would like to thank Lynn
Buckwalter for donating her beautiful hand
crocheted tote bags to the Jonah Bible Study
group. These bags were sold and this money along
with other donations raised $211 which was
sent to Zoe Ministries, (To help end human
trafficking in Delaware.) Many thanks to all who
attended, it was great fellowship and a thought
provoking study!

It’s Time Again to Sponsor the Annual
Lewes Antique Show
God bless you all for your support of our loving church! Now that you have had time to digest our
Capital Campaign, it is time to concentrate on our 55th Annual Antique Show. The 2014 ANNUAL
LEWES ANTIQUES SHOW & SALE sponsored by Bethel Church will be held the 2nd Thursday, Friday
and Saturday in July which is the 10th, 11th and 12th. This is our largest fundraiser for our church’s
general budget. The funds raised from this project help to offset the unexpected and extra
expenses that occur on an annual basis (rising heating costs, higher electric bills, broken chair
lifts for example). Lots of donations in the smallest amount add up to many dollars. While the
Capital Building Funds are especially important for “building tradition - building our future”,
funds raised from the Antique Show are a vital part of our day to day operation. Please prayer-
fully consider a donation to this important church function. A brochure is printed and given to
each person who attends the show. That brochure will include the names of all people who do-
nate any amount of money – from $1 and up. If you would like to specify your donation in honor
or in memory of someone, please complete that line indicated below. Your name will be included
on our list of sponsors, so please complete the information below and place it in the Sunday offer-
ing or mail it to Carol Wright, 2009 Savannah Circle, Lewes, DE 19958. Checks should be made
PAYABLE to Bethel UM Church. Please designate:

Beyond raising money for building improvements fund raisers have other benefits as well. They give people an opportunity to work together on a shared goal. We get to know each other, and have fun along the way. Fund raisers allow people who don’t otherwise give to the church, an opportunity to help us reach our goal. And fund raisers provide opportunities for fellowship that deepen our relationships with one another. The Finance Committee and the Capital Campaign Committee are asking that all fund raisers be coordinated through the Church Office; that there not be more than one a month; and that we avoid buying and selling on Sunday as much as possible. Two Fund Raisers are scheduled:
In June homemade strawberry preserves will be on sale.
In July discount admission to Jungle Jim’s water park will generate income for the building fund.
There are also two on-going fundraisers.
Our Sunday School made ‘stained glass banks’ to raise money for stained glass window repair, and continue to receive contributions.
The Ocean Grill in Lewes and Long Neck, will contribute 10% of your bill if you
will just write “Bethel Church” on the check. At least one fund raiser is being planned: In the fall the Methodist Men plan a pancake dinner
Welcome our District Superintendent, June 1
Plan on being in Church on
Sunday June 1 when we
welcome to worship for the
first time our District
Superintendent, the Rev. Dr.
Vicki Gordy-Stith. Vicki
grew up as a preacher’s kid,
in Dover, Wilmington, and
Salisbury, where she
graduated from High School. She is a graduate of
the United States Naval Academy where she met her
husband “Bo.” After their service in the Navy they
earned their Master of Divinity from Duke Divinity
School, and were ordained together in 1993.
Prior to becoming a Superintendent, Vicki was pastor
of Skyline UMC in Wilmington for 17 years. As
District Superintendent Vicki is responsible for 105
United Methodist Churches in Kent and Sussex
Counties. She is part of Bishop Johnson’s Cabinet,
and gives leadership throughout the Peninsula-
Delaware Conference.
When Vicki became a Superintendent she and her
father, The Rev. Howard Gordy, made history, as
the first Father and Daughter to both be District
Superintendents in our Conference.
Please welcome Vicki Gordy-Stith to Bethel on June
1 when she will bring the message and celebrate
Holy Communion.
The United Methodist Men
The Methodist Men will not meet again until
Sunday, September 21st. Have a fun and a
safe summer. God Bless!

In case you haven't checked it out yet or would like some information to pass along to others, I have created a single web page and want to make that available to you. Here is a link to a web page on the publisher's site with detailed information about the eBook as well as links to the book's page on amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Scribd. It's all right here:

Thank you for helping to spread the word. God bless you and your efforts to be living reminders of His grace!

Highlights from Bethel Christian School for the Month of MAY
Two’s Three’s
Four’s Kindergarten
Enrichment Class
Bible Class
This month the twos are learning about
Flowers and Plants. What they need to
grow - we’ll dot paint flowers for our
bulletin board, we will deco-
rate flower pots & plant a beautiful
flower inside. We’ll talk about pond
life and construct bees, butterflies,
ladybugs and frogs to decorate our room. We’ll
read lots of stories and play games
related to our themes. We will also
practice for our end of year program.
This month we talked about baby
animals, what hatches from an
egg. We are practicing
recognizing Capital letters and the
numbers one through ten. We are
busy practicing a play for our end of the year
program. Finally, the children are practicing
the months of the year and days of the week.
We are learning about mammals and their
habitats this month. We compared mammal
characteristics to other animal
groups such as birds, fish and
reptiles and amphibians. We
will study pond life and the life
cycle of a frog. We will take a
field trip to Blockhouse Pond to
observe the pond
life. We are practicing our “Little
Red Hen” play for our end of the
year spring program.
We are learning about the Earth
and how it has changed over time.
We used a toothpick to dig out
“minerals” (chocolate chips) In the
Earth (cookie). We used a hard-
boiled egg to show the core (yolk), mantle (white)
and crust (shell) and made earth candy with pep-
permint (core), Marshmallow (mantle) and
chocolate for the crust. We
studied igneous, sedimentary
and metamorphic rocks. We
learned how the shifting
plates make mountains,
volcanoes and earthquakes. We shared our biog-
raphy reports and wrote a simple autobiography.
This month the
children learned
about the islands
of Hawaii. They
learned the history
of Hawaii, what
makes each island
special and we learned about the importance of the
rainforests. The children made cookies and sold
them to buy/protect an acre of the rainforest. We
ended the unit with a luau.
We ended the month talking about
our coast. We learned about Starfish,
Horseshoe Crabs, Osprey and Plovers.
We visited the bunker and Nature
Center at our State Park. We also cleaned the
beach
This month the children learned the resurrection
story and we talked about how Jesus’ spirit
helped the disciples have courage to spread the
Good News. They learned about Paul and Silus in
prison and how the early Christians worked
together. The four year-olds
and kindergarten classes
finished out the year with the
story of Moses starting with his
birth and ending with the
Israelites settling in Jericho.
The younger children learned
the stories of Daniel and Jonah. My emphasis this
month was that Jesus is with them taking care of
them wherever they go.
