Pastor’s Letter March 1/2 Dear Parish Family, For most of my adult life, I have understood Lent as a somewhat arduous season. A time of trying to maintain a resolution of fasting and sacrifice for forty days without caving in or sliding back. Though I have occasionally made it to the finish line, I have to say that my feelings were more like relief than growth. At best I had survived it. But what if Lent were actually enjoyable? What if it became something that one could even look forward to? Would such a Lent still be Lent? A lesson about this comes to me from one of my favorite vacation pastimes - backpacking! The object of backpacking is to enjoy the landscape around you by traveling with just enough to keep safe and comfortable. In a book about backpacking that I read over thirty-five years ago, author Harry Roberts said it this way: "Take just what your body needs and your soul requires, and be a little ruthless with your soul.” The great lesson here is that most of us overestimate what we need to live and enjoy life. This is true of our possessions and also true of what we think we need to occupy our attention. In backpacking, one is encouraged to lighten the load of food and clothing because every pound we carry literally is a burden. By taking fewer things that require attention, such as books and TV, I can better see the beauty around me. This freedom lets me pay attention to my thoughts and my own heartbeat. But this also creates fear. What will I do? Without things to distract me, won't I be bored? This is the same fear people have about retreats. I once made a thirty day silent retreat with my seminary classmates. No talking, no radio, no TV, no books or papers! Just our prayers and a Bible for four weeks. We were terrified. It turns out, however, that we all found the experience full and engaging. Each of us has a very interesting and profound world inside of us and it is wonderful to take some time to get to know it better. It is in this inner world of our thoughts and prayerful moments that we come to know God. So here is a positive take on Lent. It is a journey in which we adopt some simplicity so that we can pay better attention. We try to make life just a little bit less burdened, compulsive, and full in order to give ourselves a chance to see the beauty around us and within us. Lent. Take what your body needs and your soul requires, and be a little ruthless with your soul. Sincerely yours in Christ,
Fr. Mike Vetrano, Pastor
A Simple Season for Complicated People
This year we welcome Dan Schutte, a well known Catholic musician and composer. Dan is the author of many songs we sing at mass each week including Here I am Lord and Table of Plenty.
On these evenings Dan will weave together his music and the spiritual reflections behind them.
Lent is the time of the Church’s annual retreat - a time to examine our life of faith, a time to focus on our relationship with God and steps to
nourish it. The parish mission is an opportunity to give God some time.
Our Parish Mission 2014 Evenings of Prayer, Music, and Reflection with Dan Schutte
Monday, March 24, at 7:30 PM A Deep Down Hunger God created us with a profound hunger deep in our souls, an emptiness that is forever looking to be filled. While we
surely have moments of profound happiness, it’s never enough. We’re never
completely satisfied with this life because we were made for something more.
Tuesday, March 25, at 7:30 PM God in Whom We Trust God never forces himself on us but is there when we open the door and invite him into our hearts. Opening the door
takes trust and sometimes we’re just too afraid. Who is the God that waits for us?
Who is his name? How do we come to know him?
Wednesday, March 26, at 7:30 PM God’s Invitation We are not left to make our journey alone. We make it with other men and women of faith. And we make it with God at our side
encouraging us, giving us strength and hope. Where is God inviting me? Am I
ready to follow?

Help Gather Last Years Palm
Lent and Easter are early this year. Lent begins on March 5th—
Ash Wednesday. As many Catholics know, the ashes used on Ash
Wednesday come from the burning of last year’s palm branches.
To help us celebrate this connection, you are all invited to bring
palm from last year to church on the weekend of March 1/2 so that they may be used to mark the
beginning of Lent this year.
Ash Wednesday :: March 5 As always we will have plenty of opportunities to celebrate the beginning of Lent. Blessed ashes will be distributed at the following times. 6:30 AM — Mass in Spanish
8:00 AM — Mass 10:00 AM — Prayer Service 12:00 Noon — Mass 2:00 PM — Prayer Service 4:00 PM — Children's Service (all welcome) 6:00 PM — Prayer Service 7:00 PM — Young peoples Mass (all Welcome)
Fasting and Abstinence in Lent Lenten Fast and Abstinence •All Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 inclusive, are also bound to observe the law of fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday–to limit themselves to one full meal and two smaller meals (which do not together equal a full meal) on each of those days. Water may be taken at any time. Penance •The obligation to do penance and to observe the penitential seasons is a serious one. Those whose health or work would be impaired are excused from fast and abstinence, and individuals’ consciences should guide them in this matter. However, no one should hold himself lightly excused, and another penitential practice should be substituted by those who cannot fast or abstain. A more serious reason is considered necessary to opt out of the observances on Good Friday and Ash Wednesday than for the other Fridays of Lent. Easter Duty •All of the faithful who have received First Holy Communion are obliged to receive the Eucharist at least once a year, normally during the Easter Season–a period which in the United States extends from the first Sunday of Lent to Trinity Sunday.
A Note from Religious Education Director
Jennifer Ferrantino
The Gospel today reminds us we are well taken care of by Our
Heavenly Father and we can rely on that and not worry about
tomorrow. That sense can give us the courage to reach out and take
a chance relying on God’s great love for us.
Wednesday, March 5 is Ash Wednesday the beginning of Lent, we
will have the children’s service at 4 PM and the Young Peoples Mass at 7 PM all Religious Ed
Families are encouraged to come together as a Family to begin Lent together. Wednesday students
we will meet directly in Church.
Our First Holy Communion families will meet for a mini retreat day Saturday, March 15, 2014 at
10 AM. Children and parents will meet in the Church.
Tuesday, May 13, 2014, Bishop Perez will be here to celebrate the
Sacrament of Confirmation at 4:30 PM.

“Do you not know that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?” This question from St. Paul is a question for all of us, all of us! It is said to you and me, to our relatives, neighbors, co-workers and classmates, to our friends and, yes, even to our enemies. No wonder God says in the book of Leviticus, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” and Jesus takes it even farther and tells us to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us. How hard is this? It is as hard as loving those who cheat us, rob us, fly planes into our buildings to kill us. It is as hard as being tortured and hanged on a cross for a crime you didn’t commit. It is VERY hard, but it is what it is to be a Christian. God help us never to stop trying no matter how many times we fail. ~Pax Christi Metro New York
