The air passes from the nasal cavity into the pharynxpharynx, or throat, a tube about 13cm long.It then passes into the larynxlarynx, or voice box. Air moves from the trachea into two bronchibronchi. Each bronchus passes into a lung and branches into smaller and smaller tubes called bronchiolesbronchioles.

Each respiratory bronchiole leads into an alveolar ductalveolar duct. Each alveolar duct leads into an alveolar alveolar sacsac.Small pouches, or alveolialveoli, surround each alveolar sac.The linings of these are made of a single layerof thin flattened cellsthin flattened cells.

That’s about:•One quarter the size of a doubles tennis court.•One fifth of the size of a basketball court.
The alveoli are surrounded by a network of capillaries. Those originating from the pulmonary arterypulmonary artery, carry deoxygenateddeoxygenated bloodWhilst those leaving the alveoli are oxygen rich oxygen rich and empty into the pulmonary pulmonary veinvein.
