Monthly Meetings at St. Luke's, 5555 N. Tropical Trail All meetings are open. Nov. 7 - St. Luke's Holiday Fair St. Luke's will host their 31st Annual Holiday Fair on November 7 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 5555 N. Tropical Trail, M.I. Activities include tours of the historic chapel where guests can learn the history of pioneers who built the chapel in 1888. Other events include a quilt raffle, plants, face painting, books, attic treasurers, holiday crafts, silent auction, and children's activities. The Edgewood H.S. Jazz Band will perform from 10 to 11 a.m. Lunch will feature homemade soups, chili, hamburgers, hotdogs, and BBQ. Plus a bake sale. The Fair benefits the Central Brevard Sharing Center, founded by St. Luke's. A large boat was dumped at night around October 4 into the Judson Road canal. It took four days to remove it through the efforts of Brevard Sheriff's Dept. and their marine division plus a generous donation of manpower, equipment, fuel and time by the N. Courtenay Repower Center boat engine service. The boat was registered to a former owner who wasn't involved in the illegal activity. There were no witnesses to the dumping, however there are suspects. Please report suspicious incidents to the Sheriff's Dept. Boat Dumped into Judson Road Canal Story and photos by Kim Smith Since the Brevard County Commission unanimously voted a non-binding resolution opposing both Canaveral Port Authority’s (CPA) cargo freight train routes through NMI, a new plan has come to light. On September 23, Air Force General Renuart, and colleagues presented a solution to the freight train issue for the CPA, Air Force, Navy, lagoon, Refuge, wetlands and N. Merritt Island residents. The Renuart-Larkin Extended Use Lease (EUL) is a collaborative effort with the military to construct, operate and provide security for a cargo rail spur that will serve all parties. The Port may lease what they need and the military can use it for operations of their own. This plan could save taxpayers’ millions and with Port Canaveral already in debt, this may be the best choice for everyone. Port Canaveral Cargo Rail Update by Mary Hillberg In addition, the Renuart-Larkin EUL will relocate and rebuild critical operations and storage facilities at the CCAFS with updated, safe, sustainable, certified buildings at no cost. This option will avoid the fragile lagoon areas that are prime for spawning and sea grass, minimize intrusion into the Refuge, and avoid NMI…all for less cost than any other route. The CPA planned a new rail line which must come under the Surface Transportation (STB) purview, but the Renaurt-Larkin EUL is an extension of an established track on military property and not subject to that board. The CPA agreed to consider this proposal and we hope they do. Our tax monies paid for our port and our citizens should have a say in how any industrial expansion of it impacts us. Website Update Extreme thanks to Mary Hillberg for establishing and faithfully maintaining the nmihoa.org website for many years. She has passed the torch to Chris Cook who with the help of Chris Minerva have updated it to a new server. It looks great and is still a work in progress. Membership Update The NMIHOA has 493 members. However, 145 are not current with their $10 per year dues. Therefore we are sending reminders and envelopes in this newsletter in hopes that we can add more to the "paid member" status. Please and thank you.
