Dear Parishioners,

If you were to go to New York City on this 4th of July, you could see the Statue of Liberty lighted up with fireworks, televised throughout the nation. For 130 years, the Statue of Liberty has been an enduring icon of the United States and freedom. Ironically, the statue is an “immigrant” from Europe, a gift from the French People to the United States. Placed at the harbor to New City, she became the first sight for many of the immigrants coming to the U.S. in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Many came to our shores seeking the very thing Lady Liberty stands for: freedom.

As we give thanks this 4th of July and pray for our nation, may we remember that we are, everyone of us, either immigrants or descendants of immigrants in this country (even Native Americans, the so called American Indians, migrated from Asia to the Americas perhaps 23,000 years ago). There is such controversy right now about immigrants, but anti-immigrant sentiment is not new to our nation. No one today questions Irish-American patriotism, but Irish immigrants of the 19th century were often vilified and accused of being criminals. It was not unusual to see “Help wanted but No Irish need Apply” signs at the time.

GOD BLESS AMERICA

I have faith that our nation will find solutions to challenges like immigration, poverty, and racism as we move beyond fear to recall our original ideals as a country cherishing “liberty and justice for all.”

Back to our Statue of Liberty. On the base of the pedestal upon which she stands, is a poem by Emma Lazarus (1849–1887):

In public school I learned these words through song. Now more than 50 years later I still think: here is the best of America, an America God can bless.

As of July 17 we will resume having one weekday entrance to Holy Faith only at NW 43 Street. In other words, the gates at the NW 39 Street exit will be closed Mondays through Fridays to prevent traffic cutting through our church campus. On Saturdays and Sundays both entrances will be open.

We had this arrangement before we started construction of the New Parish Life Center. It is not just the many cars which cut through the property but also larger service trucks and all of it is hard on our driveways. Also, many cars speed through the property, not observing stop signs, especially at the crossing from the Church to the Parish Life Center, an area of lower visibility for pedestrian crossing.

We apologize for any inconvenience to our parishioners but trust all will understand the safety and maintenance needs which make this arrangement necessary.

Yours in the Heart of Christ,

Fr. John

Bishop: ‘Fundamental defects’ persist in Senate’s version of health bill By Mark Pattison Catholic News Service Posted June 23, 2017

WASHINGTON (CNS) — The Senate’s Better Care Reconciliation Act contains “many of the fundamental defects” that appeared in the House-passed American Health Care Act “and even further compounds them,” said the bishop who heads the U.S. bishops’ Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development.

The Senate released its health care reform bill in “discussion draft” form June 22.

“As is, the discussion draft stands to cause disturbing damage to the human beings served by the social safety net,” Bishop Frank J. Dewane of Venice, Florida, said in a statement released late June 22. “It is precisely the detrimental impact on the poor and vulnerable that makes the Senate draft unacceptable as written.”

Bishop Dewane criticized the “per-capita cap” on Medicaid funding, which would no longer be an entitlement but have its own budget line item under the Better Care Reconciliation Act. The effect, he said, “would provide even less to those in need than the House bill. These changes will wreak havoc on low-income families and struggling communities, and must not be supported.”

“An acceptable health care system provides access to all, regardless of their means, and at all stages of life,” Bishop Dewane said. “Such a health care system must protect conscience rights, as well as extend to immigrant families.”

He indicated the Better Care Reconciliation Act at least partially succeeds on conscience rights by “fully applying the long-standing and widely supported Hyde Amendment protections. Full Hyde protections are essential and must be included in the final bill.”

However, the bishops “also stressed the need to improve real access for immigrants in health care policy, and this bill does not move the nation toward this goal,” Bishop Dewane said. “It fails, as well, to put in place conscience protections for all those involved in the health care system, protections which are needed more than ever in our country’s health policy.”

“Health, indeed, is not a consumer good, but a universal right which means that access to healthcare services cannot be a privilege.”

We had a fantastic time at Camp-out VBS. Thank you to all our wonderful volunteers, the families, the kids, and especially to our VBS co-ordinator, TiAnna Rosario, who says “there is no way I could have done this without the help of our volunteers before, during and after the camp.” Her message to all states:

Thank you for sharing the Light of Christ with the children

of Holy Faith!

We had 44 volunteers so the list is too long to publish here but once again, our thanks!
