    INTRODUCTION- MATHEMATICSASADISCIPLINE

AIMS OF MATHEMATICS AS A DISCIPLINE

    1. To teach students the concepts basic to quantitative thinking

    2. To develop students' ability to think logically

    3. to inculcate such mental habits and attitudes

    4. to train students in functional thinking, meaning thinking in termsof relationships

    Other Aims

    1. AESTETHIC- to develop appreciation of beauty in thegeometrical forms found in nature, art, and industry

    2. INTELLECTUAL- to develop appreciation of logical structure, precision of statement and thought, and logical reasoning

    3. ETHICAL- to develop appreciation of the power of mathematics

    AS A MATHEMATICS STUDENT

    One should:

    1. Have an understanding of deductive nature ofmathematics

    2. Understand the basic properties of operations onnumbers

    3. Be able to perceive patterns

    4. Be aware that mathematics is used not only in thenatural sciences but also in the behavioral and socialsciences and arts

    5. Recognize that some professions require knowledge ofsophisticated and complex mathematical techniques

    6. Know the ways in which computers are used in science, technology, business, and government

    7. Be aware of the extent to which mathematical skills areused by individuals in their daily life
