The most successful small business owners and entrepreneurs are also the best goal-setters and planners. Goal setting is how smart business owners transform lofty ambitions into concrete results. On the surface, goal setting may seem easy to do. But like many things in life, it’s a skill that takes time and practice to master.

Here are some tips to help you improve your goal setting skills.

Set long-term goals first – Small businesses often set goals within a couple of time-frames: long-term and near-term. Generally, long-term means greater than one year, and near-term means less than one year. Long-term goals focus on business achievements within the firm’s planning horizon. These goals tend to be broader and less detailed and developed first.

Follow the SMART guidelines – SMART guidelines are as popular as they are because of their practicality and simplicity:

è Specific – Goals should be written in precise, well-defined terms, rather than use ambiguous wording.

è Measurable –Write goals so you can measure your progress in numeric or “yes/no” terms.

è Achievable – Goals should be challenging, but not impossible to reach.

è Realistic – Well-written goals are not “pie in the sky,” but are grounded in reality.

è Timely – Goals should specify a target date or time-period for their completion.

Set a manageable number of goals – If a few goals are good, then more must be better, right? Not necessarily! If you have too many goals, you may end up spending too much time just monitoring your progress and

can be distracting. Having a few well-conceived goals will allow you to focus your attention on what’s most important.

Put your goals in writing – Don’t set and keep goals in your head, get them down on paper. There’s something about recording goals and putting them in writing that makes them more formal and meaningful. Once they’re in writing, it’s easier to share them with others

(if necessary), and it’s less likely that you’ll “forget” them.

Revisit goals regularly – Don’t set your goals in January and then wait until December to see how well you’re doing. Revisit your goals periodically – monthly or, at least, quarterly – and monitor your progress. Doing so allows you to make mid-course adjustments, if needed. Or you may find that you have to revise a goal for any number of good reasons.

DIRECTOR’S CUTJanice Bullman, executive director

Time is flying by, and 2015 already looks to be an awesome year! The Chamber’s staff and committees have been very busy, and

it is great to see all of the successes from this work. The Chamber’s Cash Bash event exceeded revenue from previous years, and the reinstated Annual Meeting and Awards Banquet exceeded expected attendance! Plans are already underway for these 2016 events.

Yet another success was acknowledged by the Indiana Chamber Executives Association (ICEA). Each year the ICEA honors Chambers for their achievements and excellence in practice. This year, your Franklin Chamber of Commerce was awarded

three “Excellence in Communication Awards.” The awards included the Franklin Chamber’s website design; the newly developed logo/branding and the weekly electronic newsletter.

The Chamber’s board and staff has completed a three-year strategic plan document, and the work has already begun! Within the next few months you will hear more about the enhancements and opportunities coming from this collaborative work.

Two new programs being launched this year are the Work-based Learning: A Student-Business Partnership and a Chamber Ambassador Program. The work-based learning project is a collaboration between the Franklin Chamber of Commerce and Franklin Community High School. Other contributing partners in this project for high school seniors include Franklin Education Connection, Ivy Tech, Franklin College, Johnson

County Development Corp. and the Chamber’s many business partners. The Ambassador Program has been established to support and assist the Chamber’s membership outreach.

The 2015-16 Membership Directory has a new and improved look this year. If you haven’t received a copy of the directory, please stop by or contact the Chamber to get this outstanding publication. In addition to member listings, the directory includes a Franklin trail map and key community contacts.

Many “thanks” are extended to all of our sponsors and donors; to everyone who placed an additional advertisement in this year’s directory and to all of our committees and volunteers. You are so sincerely appreciated, and we’ve accomplished so much because of you!
