GOAL SETTING MEETINGS - WK 6
Have you made a time to see your child’s teacher? www.schoolinterviews.com.au code: c78wz
From the Principal
Term 1 Week 5 Newsletter No. 03
1 March 2019
Principal : Mary Ttikirou Deputy: Maria Appelt
Dear Families,
Parent Engagement is important at Modbury School P-7!
In 2019 we will continue to seek ways to strengthen relationships and build
opportunities for all parents to connect with our school. Although parental
involvement and parental engagement are often used interchangeably,
there are differences.
It is proven that student achievement in learning is fostered when both parents
and schools work together to facilitate a supportive, rich learning environment
in both the home and school. Building positive parent school relationships is
the starting point. Next week’s teacher parent /student meetings will help
foster these important partnerships. Teachers will look to continue to build on
the information shared at these meetings in different ways. It is our intention
that all families will have engaged with their child’s teachers in some capacity
in the next week.
Parent Involvement refers to activities that take place at school such as
volunteering, meeting with teachers, attending school events, engaging with
Skoolbag, Facebook page, Playgroup and parent-teacher meetings/
interviews.
Parent Engagement refers to schools enabling parents to take their place
alongside educators in the schooling of their children. As a staff we will be
developing strategies to support authentic parent engagement and invite
your feedback.
Along with this, the Modbury School Governing Council will be involved in
discussions this year to support the development of opportunities for greater
parent engagement in the schooling of your children. Essentially, the outcome
we are looking for is that the power and authority be shared by educators and
parents with ideas to be mutually determined and beneficial.
If you have any feedback for the Governing Council, please forward your
comments via email [email protected] or a note to the office
for the Governing Council Members.
Pancake Breakfast / Assembly
Special thanks to the Modbury School Community Group and volunteers that
supported the pancake breakfast on Wednesday 27 February. Additional
thanks to Trinity Church Modbury for their ongoing support of these events
providing hot beverages.
Learning Community B (Rooms 8 & 9)
During week 2 in Learning Community B we were
given a STEM challenge. We had to work in groups
mixed with year 3s and 4s. Our task was to make a
car that could hold a koala teddy and also roll or
drag along a flat surface.
We each plan on our own. Then we worked with
our group to decide which plan and ideas would
be best. After that it was time to build.
It was challenging because we were only able to
use the materials and only had 40 minutes to build.
After the time was up, we had to present our final
car to the class and test if it could
1) support koala
2) roll or drag
This helped us work collaboratively with each other
and CONNECT with others.
The task allowed us to CREATE ideas and put them
together to design a car.
It was a CHALLENGE having only certain materials
to use and a time limit and putting our ideas
together.

Materials we could use were:
Straws
Popsticks
Bottle tops
Rubber bands

Help us Save Bubbles
the Port River Dolphin!
In Learning Community B we are trying to help the
Port River Dolphins because we care about them
and their habitat. This term we are learning about
sustainability and the war on waste. We think that
pollution is an issue everyone in the whole world
should be worried about because we need to look
after our environment and not harm it. It is important
to us because we need to keep our atmosphere
clean, pollution can kill wildlife both on land and in
the ocean and we don’t want to live in a world full
of rubbish.
We have learned that when we litter and the wind
blows all the rubbish gets blown into the creek. After
it is blown into the creek the water washes the
rubbish down into the ocean. When it gets to the
ocean, the plastic rubbish often looks like sea
animals such as jellyfish. Sea creatures like turtles
and fish eat the rubbish and this makes them sick
and sometimes die.
We are learning about ways to reduce, reuse and
recycle waste. We have decided to collect
recyclables to raise money to adopt a dolphin that
lives in the Port River called Bubbles. The money will
help provide an information centre, a CCTV
camera, water testing equipment and a vet to help
sick or hurt dolphins.
For more information about the dolphins please go
to: https://adopt-au.whales.org/
This Sunday 3rd March, is Clean Up Australia Day, we
would love it if you would go to a nearby park or
creek and pick up some rubbish to help reduce
pollution in our environment.
If you bring fruit boxes or plastic bottles
like pop tops to school, please help us by
bringing them to LCB when they are
empty so we can recycle them.
So far we have collected 809 recyclables
in 10 days and are getting close to our
first goal. Once we have $100 we would
like to see if we can raise more money to
adopt the other dolphins in the Port River.
Please take action
and join us in our
quest to CLEAN UP
Modbury school
and the local
community!
Remember to
always put your
rubbish in the
correct bins.
WHAT IS THE SPORTS VOUCHERS PROGRAM?
The Sports Vouchers program is a
Government of South Australia initiative
administered by the Office for Recreation,
Sport and Racing.
The program provides an opportunity for
primary school aged children from Reception
to Year 7 to receive up to a $100 discount on
sports or dance membership/registration fees.
The purpose is to increase the number of
children playing organised sport or
participating in dance activities by reducing
cost as a barrier.
From 1 January 2019 several changes have
been made to the program, including the
vouchers being increased from $50 to $100
and all forms of dance are now eligible.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR THE PROGRAM?
All South Australian primary school aged children,
meaning if the child is attending or is eligible to
attend primary school (Reception to Year 7,
even if Year 7 is based at a high school).
Remember it is one voucher for every primary
school aged child per calendar year.
To find your nearest provider please use the ‘Find
a Provider’ tool on
www.sportsvouchers.sa.gov.au
HOW DOES THE PROGRAM WORK?
There are currently two methods of claiming a
voucher. The method depends on the providers
system. Some providers have online registrations,
claiming the voucher has been integrated into
their systems.
If the provider does not have the voucher
integrated into their online registrations, you’ll
need to download the voucher.
Once completed, take the voucher to an
approved provider to receive a discount on the
fees when you register.
Providers access the secure Voucher Portal to
redeem vouchers and receive reimbursement.
Does you child want to try a sport? Do they already participate in
sport? Did you know that the South Australian Government provides
Sports Vouchers to children who are Primary School aged to assist
families with the cost of sports.
Go to www.sportsvouchers.sa.gov.au to find out more.
