Learning Goal:
I will be able to understand what goal setting is
and decision making strategies and apply it to my
career search ….& the rest of my life!
You're on your own. And you know what you know.
And YOU are the guy who'll decide where to go.
Oh, the Places You'll Go! - Dr. Seuss
What is a Goal?A goal is something you want to accomplish.
For this reason a goal should be reachable and/or doable.
Categories of Goals [V.I.P]SHORTTERMGOALS
You accomplish these things in the next week or next month, such as: “do the reading on Wednesday, so I can write my English paper on the weekend.
MEDIUMTERMGOALS
Further in the future, maybe three months to a year, such as “raise my mark in science by 10% by the end of the semester.”
LONGTERMGOALS
You set these goals for the next ten years, such as: “go to college and get a certificate in broadcasting – television, since you want to work as a camera person for a television network.
Different Types of Goals [V.I.P]PERSONALGOALS
Concerning yourself, your family, your friends and other people who are important to you.
WORK GOALS
Occupations and jobs
LEARNING GOALS
In a school setting or outside, for yourself, or how to achieve other goals.
COMMUNITYGOALS
Contributions you make and benefits you receive
Questions to Ask – Help You Plan1. What goal do I want to achieve?2. What tasks (steps) need to be done?3. What steps do I need to take?4. What do I need to learn in order to take those steps?5. Who could help me do what needs to be done?6. What possible obstacles or barriers could get in the
way?7. What are the timelines? In what order do things
need to be done, and by what date?
SSPECIFIC
is it clear and identifiable?
is the goal your own? (or your parents?)
EX: A goal of graduating from high school is too general. Specify how this will be accomplished. (Study more in order to receive better grades.)
[V.I.P]
MMEASURABLE
Can results be determined?
Are they written down?
How will you know you succeeded?
[V.I.P]
AATTAINABLE
is it possible?
are they consistent with your values, interests, abilities?
what is REALLY important to you?
[V.I.P]
RREALISTIC
is it probable?
can you solve any problems? that you may encounter along the way?
[V.I.P]
Unclear Goals● I want to be a good student● I want to be physically fit● I want to have more money● I want to be more active socially
Revised Goals● I want to get a B in English● I want to be able to run a half-marathon● I want to get a part-time job so that I can go on the school ski trip next

We make decisions everyday!
The DIG-EM Model (Decision Making) [V.I.P]D→ define the situation--who or what does it involve?
I→ identify the options
G→ gather information on the factors that will influence my decision
E→ evaluate the alternatives and actions; order them best to worst
M→ make a decision; accepting the consequences.
Sara is a hard working young woman and an excellent student with high grades. She has worked as a merchandiser at a neighborhood grocery store since she was 14 years old and has saved almost every paycheck she has earned at the store. Now that Sara is 16, she wants to buy a car with her savings. However, Sara has a problem. She also wants to go to college and has only one more year of high school to graduate with honors. Even though her parents are very proud of her, they have told her that she will have to decide what to do with her money. Sara’s parents have made it very clear to her that she will not receive any financial support from them.
