IG-541 Steps Up To The Green Challenge

When selecting firefighting systems, the sustainability of the system – or how much environmental impact it has – is a top consideration for firms today, together with how efficient the system is in fighting fires.

The reason for this is the increasing global pressure to reduce greenhouse gases. In particular, the 1993 ban on production of Halon 1301 because of its ozone-depleting effect generated an intense search for greener fire protection technology.

// Redefining SustainabilityIn fire protection, a sustainable technology is one that extinguishes fires effectively, is economical to install and maintain and that offers a favorable environmental, health and safety profile.

IG-541 meets all these criteria in full.

A totally natural fire extinguishant made up of nitrogen, argon and carbon dioxide, IG-541 is remarkable in that it has no impact on the environment

and is safe for people and property. It extinguishes fires by reducing oxygen concentration in the hazard area, leaves no trace and has no harmful impact because it is made up of gases that we already breathe in.

It is also among the greenest of technology; once discharged, the gases simply return to the atmosphere, posing no ozone depletion or global warming potential.

// Why Going Green Is The Smart Move For Businesses, Consultants And Building OwnersFire protection systems are typically built into an infrastructure intended to last for years. Because of this, it makes little financial sense to invest in a system that may have to be

replaced a few years down the road. By definition, sustainable technology also offers more years of service and lower cost-in-use. And so going green actually helps firms cut costs.

Today, fire protection technologies such as IG-541 are rewriting the standards for sustainability. They are not only efficient at putting out fires, they help companies save cost and they do no harm in the process. Because IG-541 poses no environmental risks, it will never be banned. And a company that uses IG-541 will never be accused of being a poor environmental steward.

With products like IG-541, for smart companies the way forward is clear: sustainability is the only way to go.

Safe For People, For Property And For The Environment

IG-541 is one of the most exciting fire suppression technologies introduced by LPG in recent years. This environment-friendly, people-safe agent boasts zero ozone depletion and global warming potential, and has zero atmospheric lifetime. It is an ideal solution for enclosed areas where people may be present and where damage from conventional agents cannot be tolerated.

// Designed To Be Safe For Humans IG-541 is a blend of inert atmospheric gases that contains nitrogen, argon and carbon dioxide. These gases are naturally present in the air we breathe in and are non-toxic. Because of this, IG-541 does not threaten human health compared to halon-based or halocarbon agents.

IG-541 also does not affect brain function. While it does lower the oxygen level in a room, humans continues to receive the same amount of oxygen to their brain upon its discharge – vital for quick-thinking action during a fire.

In addition, IG-541 does not cause fogging and so will not affect vision when discharged. This makes for safer evacuation during a fire.

// Designed To Be Safe For PropertyMost fire-fighting agents break down in a fire to form byproducts that are corrosive to electronic components. IG-541 does not do this. It is also totally free of residue. This ensures that no property damage will result from its discharge.

// Built To Be Safe For The Environment IG-541 is a clean agent that does not contain halocarbons. Since it made up of natural components that exist in the air, these components simply become part of the earth’s life cycle following a discharge. This makes IG-541 100% earth-friendly.

Facilities like data centres, power generation facilities, telecommunication systems and tape storage facilities are engines that drive the business. Indeed, it is impossible to put a price tag on the damage to reputation and financial standing should the control rooms of steel plants, power generators, refineries and oil and gas facilities shut down. Or what would happen should server rooms and data centres of financial institutions or server rooms of IT-enabled service providers suffer a malfunction that take them out of commission.

This has resulted in increased awareness of the need to protect essential electrical equipment from damage by fire.

As a business, your first step towards protecting your mission-critical assets should be to prepare for the worst. To do that, it is vital that businesses have in place a structured approach for determining their fire protection strategy for their building as a whole.

Indeed, when your goal is save lives, protect property and minimise business losses, failure is not an option. To fully secure the safety of your people and your business, a planned service agreement (PSA) is recommended.

Planned Service Agreements not only offer a strategy that covers passive fire protection and active fire protection, fire detection and automatic extinguishing systems, they also cover risk assessment, fire safety management, and inspection, testing and commissioning.

With a Planned Service Agreement, you know your business is safe from disaster.

All businesses today are reliant on electrical equipment. This makes most electrical installations mission-critical assets for firms.

A totally natural fire extinguishant made up of nitrogen, argon and carbon dioxide, IG-541 offers many remarkable benefits.

An inert gas, it is odourless and non-corrosive and may be used at normal temperatures with such materials as nickel, steel, stainless steel, copper, brass, bronze and plastics. It is also electrically non-conducive and leaves no residue to clean up after discharge. This makes it perfect for the protection of all electric and electronic materials and suitable for the protection of computer rooms, telephone exchange equipment

and any other electrical installation that may present a fire hazard.

It extinguishes fires by reducing oxygen concentration in the hazard area, and has no harmful impact because it is made up of gases that humans already breathe in. This makes it safe for use in occupied areas and for the protection of archives, museums, libraries and any other human-occupied buildings including valuable property.

It is also among the greenest of technology; once discharged, the gases simply return to the atmosphere, posing

no ozone depletion or global warming potential. Indeed, IG-541 boasts zero ozone depletion and global warming potential, and has zero atmospheric lifetime.

An added advantage of IG-541 is the flexibility it allows in installation. IG-541 is stored in high-pressure cylinders that can be arranged either in a modular or centralised fashion. This lends the system great adaptability for all actuation and release systems currently used in the market, even allowing combinations of several of them.

In the field of fire protection, the global demand is for more environmentally friendly products that reduce the use and generation of hazardous substances. And the use of inert gases is the safest and most natural method of extinguishing fire. That is why LPG introduced IG-541, a fire suppression technology based on inert gases. Now leveraging on its engineering know-how, LPG has developed a system to perfectly deliver IG-541, named iFlow.

Among systems that use inert gases, iFlow is probably the safest in the world.

Developed for use with IG-541, iFlow is a 100% green fire-fighting technology that offers many benefits. These include supreme safety in use, savings in cost, time and space, maximum flexibility and the ability to reuse immediately. It also allows for real-live test checking.

iFlow delivers all these benefits with three patented devices. They are: The iFlow valve, the iFlow check valve and the Matrix design concept.

This patented valve allows gases to be released in a constant flow and at an unvarying pressure of 60 bar. With this, iFlow is able to release 95% of its extinguishing agent in just 60 seconds! And because the directional valves ensure a lower pressure of 60 bar in the system, compared to the 200 or 300 bar in conventional systems, the system can be installed using lower-cost items such as pipes or manifold collectors, resulting in savings in installation cost.

The iFlow valve is also designed to connect with other cylinders. This reduces the length and thickness required of the manifold. Further, the iFlow valve prevents gas from returning from the manifold towards the cylinders. This means no leakages and easier maintenance and installation.

What’s more, the iFlow valve is probably the safest valve in the market.

The valve features a safety disk that prevents pressure from rising temperature. Its depressurisation screw

prevents discharge while manipulating. A screw plug on the manometer halts gas leakage under high pressure in the event that the manometer breaks. And special relief devices stop any accidental releases.

It is also certified to the highest standards, including the prestigious VdS in Germany and the Transportable Pressure Equipment Directive. It is also 100% Valve drawing, for guaranteed quality and functionality.

The iFlow Valve – Probably The Safest Valve In The Market

At LPG, we’ve put great thought in making the iFlow more efficient, cheaper to install and with greater built-in flexibility. That is why we built the iFlow valve into the system.

iFlow Demonstrates How Two Valves Are Better Than One

In addition to the IFlow Valve, iFlow also features the Horizontal Non Return Valve. This is a horizontal check valve inserted between the release hose and the manifold pipe. This uniquely shaped valve not only connects elements of the system, it prevents leakages by stopping gas from returning from the manifold towards the cylinders. The Horizontal Non Return Valve also allows all the critical elements of the system to be checked and maintained at the time of commissioning and during preventive maintenance, thus averting the risk of accidental discharge.

But the main advantage of this valve is the flexibility it imparts the entire system; unlike standard valves that can only be placed vertically, the Horizontal Non Return Valve can be greatly varied in position.

Save Cost, Save Space With The iFlow Matrix Design - A Revolution In Space Distribution

The Matrix design brings with it a number of great benefits. They are:

• A reduction in the number of manifolds required, making maintenance easier.

• It allows for a unique hose model that bears a smaller diameter and that allows for more flexible materials.

• It uses a distinctive bracket that reduces the amount of bottles required.

• It makes possible a matrix distribution of systems that adapts easily to different architectural needs. This opens up possibilities when it comes to space design.

The IFlow is also unique for its innovative way of positioning its banks of cylinders, where cylinders in rows and columns join cylinders with hoses. We call this unique positioning the Matrix design.

A Multiple-Room Protection System Built To Meet The Highest Standards

Both LPG IG-541 and the iFLOW system are designed to protect your entire property. Using a single battery and directional valves, gas is led to the rooms that require extinguishing. These directional valves consist of a high pressure ball valve, a pneumatic piston with input and output coupling pressure, complemented by an electro-valve and a lever for automatic and manual opening respectively. What’s more, with LPG IG-541 and iFLOW, you enjoy peace of mind knowing that your system meets the highest international standards. All LPG systems and components for inert gases are certified by the most stringent accredited institutions and independent laboratories. They include VdS in Germany, LPCB in the United Kingdom, PESO in India and Workcover in Australia. Today LPG IG-541 and iFLOW are patented technologies that are setting the benchmark for inert gas systems worldwide.
