Warm Up—8/31You have 2 minutes to compose a brief, yet attention-getting
advertisement selling one of these once LUXIOURIOUS vehicles! USE adjectives to give potential buyers an idea of how the vehicle
looks (inside and out), smells, sounds like, etc.!!! IMAGERY is the key!!!
Adjectives ONLY describe NOUNS and PRONOUNS._______________________________________________________
• EX: The eager students stood in the long lunch line patiently.
• EX: As my mother suspiciously inspected my cluttered room, she discovered that her lost bracelet was underneath my plush Cowboys comforter.
• EX: Scary music filtered out of the smelly basement.

Adjectives provide MORE information about the:
• Size (small, large, long, short…)• Shape (round, square, rectangular, diamond-shaped…)• Color (yellow, black, blue, red, green, turquoise…)• Texture (smooth, rough, rocky, hilly, sticky…)• Feeling (groggy, grouchy, cheerful, elated, disgusted…)• Sound (creepy, creaky, still, soothing…)• Smell (pleasant, foul, loud, flowery…)• Taste (minty, delectable, sweet, fruity, pleasant…)• Number (first, second, fiftieth, several…)• Condition (dirty, incomplete, appropriate, sick…)
…of a NOUN or PRONOUN
MOST adjectives precede or _____________the nouns or pronouns they describe.
• Predicate adjectives are the exception. In the case of predicate adjectives, the
adjective appears _____________ the noun or pronoun it describes in the ______________ part of the sentence.
STEPS to searching for adjectives…1. Read the sentence of course.
2. Identify the nouns/pronouns in the sentence.
3. Look at the words before and after the identified nouns or pronouns in the sentence and ask yourself…
Is/Are these words providing more information about the identified noun or pronoun?
If you answer YES,YOU HAVE IDENTIFIED AN ADJECTIVE!
If you are still unsure, grab a dictionary or thesaurus and check!!!
Using adjectives in YOUR writing:
You should want to liven up the dull parts of your writing. In order to do so, simply
describe the nouns or pronouns to help the reader VISUALIZE the people, places, things,
qualities, and/or ideas.
Using adjectives does help tremendously with imagery!!!
Help the READER see and feel your experience!
