Rod HarmonFrom the Editor

As we say goodbye to 2011, it's timeto look into our crystal ball to seewhat 2012 has in store:Theaters showing George Lucas'

new 3-D version of the "Star Wars"series will be issued custom-maderose-tinted glasses to hand out to theaudience.• The original lineup of Guns N'

Roses will not appear at the band'sinduction to the Rock and Hall ofFame, leaving Buckethead to acceptthe honor. Axl Rose will show up anhour later, throw a tantrum, and trash the podium. (Admit-tedly, some of these predictions aren't much of a stretch.)

• Every member of the Tea Party holding an elected of-fice will demand that ribbons at ribbon-cutting ceremoniesbe replaced with life-support hoses so they can get a warmfuzzy feeling inside every time they cut one.

• In response, enraged liberals holding elected office willdemand that the ribbons be reinstated, but will then caveand agree that life-support hoses may be used as long asthey include a toll-free number for a recorded messagegiving tips on how to avoid dying. Both sides will tout thisas a great victory.

• The Beach Boys will celebrate their 50th anniversarywith a tour. However, every concert will begin 20 minuteslate when the band has to remind the audience just whothe (expletive) David Marks is.• Paul McCartney's new album will be disappointing.

(Again, not much of a stretch.)• Barry Bonds will say he is very, very sorry for lying

about taking steroids while he's lounging poolside withseveral bikini-clad women during his house arrest.

• While burning in hell, Osama bin Laden and Moam-mar Gadhafi will hold daily discussions about the absenceof the harems and rich bounties they believed would bebestowed upon them for killing thousands under the guiseof holy law.

• Following in the tradition of its celebrations for NewYear's Eve, Christmas and Easter, the City of Portlandwill downsize the annual Old Port Festival by moving it toLincoln Park. There, kids will be invited to slide down theOccupy Maine medical tent (for six tickets), and enter-tainment will be provided by a fire-stick juggler and somebearded dude strumming a guitar.

• At the same time, Portland officials will commissionthe following public art projects: Origami bike racks, original artwork painted over parking spaces, and custom-made street signs that require a decoder to read.• After blaming unions, teachers, state employees and

welfare recipients for ruining the economy, politicians andtalk-show hosts will take the next logical step and expandthis net to include social workers, soup kitchen volunteers, buskers and anyone who recycles.

• Anyone caught with a firecracker in Maine will have itconfiscated and face a stiff fine. They will be able to keepthe loaded guns tucked into their belts, though.

• Netflix will revise its pricing policy so customers willhave to pay extra to watch DVDs that aren't scratchedand allow viewers to fast-forward past the previews. Inresponse, Blockbuster will require that its movies be re-turned within three hours after renting.

• Charlie Sheen, Kim Kardashian, Snooki, Kate Gos-selin, Lindsay Lohan and end-of-the-world predictors willno longer receive massive attention for being completeand utter morons. (A guy's got to have something to lookforward to, doesn't he?)

Happy New Year!

Greet the new year at any one of a number of celebrations and shows.

ByRAYROUTHIER StajfWriter

hink about the pressure a performer's under to put on a good New Year's Eve show

For some folks, New Year's Eve might be their one night out on the town all year. They've shelled out big bucks for a baby sitter and a nice dinner out.

So the show better be good.

"I feel a responsibility, because it's always a big night out for people," said Maine comedian Bob Marley who has been doing New Year's Eve shows at Portland's Merrill Auditorium for more than a decade. "That always weighs on my mind when I come up with new stuff - do I put it on my album or save it for the holiday shows?"

Usually, the holiday show wins out. Marley said there will be plenty of new material in his

act when he does two New Year's Eve shows Saturday at the Merrill. And because he doesn't want to let the folks at Portland's Comedy Connection down, he plans to do another New Year's Eve show there as well.

Rob Derhak, bass player for the jam-rock band moe., also says New Year's Eve shows carry some responsibility.

"In 20 years, there's only been one or two years when we haven't played on New Year's Eve. Our fans expect us to play, and we don't want to let them down," said Derhak, who will be playing two shows with moe. on Friday and Saturday at Portland's State Theatre. "There are a couple of shows in a year that have really high expectations, and this is one."

This year's New Year's Eve is even more special, says Derhak, because he gets to do a show in his backyard - he lives in Falmouth.

While there might be pressure on performers, you shouldn't feel pressure to find something to do New Year's Eve. There's plenty going on, from concerts to dance parties and family-friendly festivals.

To help you out, we've compiled a list of some of the major New Year's Eve events planned for the Greater Portland area.

All shows are on Saturday unless otherwise noted.

Self-releasing work leavesPaul free to set his own terms

AimselMaking

Although he lives in Char-lottesville, Va., us Mainerscan always claim singer-

songwriter Ellis Paul as one ofour own.

Originally from Fort Kent, Paulbecame part of the fabled Bos-ton folk scene in the '90s, andsince then has risen to nationalfame with more than 15 albums.

Along the way, he's collectedno fewer than 14 Boston MusicAwards and forged a relation-ship with filmmakers the Farrelly Broth-ers, who have used his music in "Me,Myself & Irene," "Shallow Hal" and, mostrecently, "Hall Pass," which featured nineof Paul's songs.

His latest project is the song "We AllBelong" (available on iTunes), on whichhe's backed by Sugar-land. It's being usedin the documentary "LIFE Before Death,"which is part of the Global Access toPain Relief's initiative to bring pain reliefmedications to underprivileged areas ofthe world.

GO asked Paul about all of this stuff, andthrew in a few more questions.

How does it feel to be still goingstrong 21 years into your career?

There's a certain amount of luck andpride that I'm still going at it and still

PontiNoise

invested in it and loving it, andthat people are still coming out.I feel very fortunate and reallyhappy.

With regard to the song "WeAll Belong," how did you getinvolved with Global Access?

They hired me. They're creat-ing a doc film to promote globalawareness for health care forpeople who are passing on.They asked me to write a song

for it that was about pain and suffering, and also that would get people to feelmotivated to contribute. I'm pretty proudof it.

"The Hero in You" is your new familyalbum. How did you choose which he-roes you wanted to write songs about?

I had my favorites and my wife had sug-gestions, and we put it out on the fan list, and we had over 100 heroes listed overall. If this is a success, I'll do sequels. I stillhaven't done MLK or Mark Twain.

REVIEWHOW IT RATESDJ D'ANCONIA,"D'ANCONIA"LABEL: N/A

Based on a five-star scale

DJ D'Anconia's debut effortdoesn't miss a beat

By MIKE OLCOTTIt's time for a huge talent with Maine

roots to step out of the shadows. Freeport-based DJ D'Anconia, (nee Drew Taggart)has dropped his debut EI-J and it's muchmore thoughtful work than the glowstickglop that typically makes waves in thisgenre.

A student of (and opening act for) legendSteve Aoki, D'Anconia clearly knows hisway around building a beat. "Dutcheese"kicks it off with Daft Punk chutzpah."Elodie" is a potent and organized secondtrack stunner. An incessant, but notunwelcome island drum loop in the versegives way to a ravetastic lights up chorus.

The bulk of the album is practiced andrefined, but D'Anconia can still afford to

cut some fat. The last 60 seconds of "TheLights" is dull stock beat. Some effectsare garishly cartoony. In some cases, Tag-gart will fall for a certain sound and theninclude it incessantly.

But the sheen that comes off this shorteffort can be attributed to D'Anconia's re-markable restraint. For all the need thereis to pump up the party in his line of work, these songs build on slow energy, andjams that never cross into abrasive. AsD'Anconia's bank grows, he'll be able tobuy keyboards with more nuanced beatsto work with, and his music will blossombecause he chose to start with an eye forsubtlety.

pioneer - the king of ice cream - and oneof the first black business owners.

How did you hook up with the FarrellyBrothers?

Peter Farrelly and my manager Ralph(Jaccodine) were drinking buddies inthe late '80s and early '90s. When Ralphstarted managing me, he just kept send-ing my stuff to them, and they startedincorporating my music into their movies.I like their movies a lot; they're raunchycomedies with soft spots, and the songsprovide those soft spots.

Your last album, "The Day After Ev-erything Changed," was fan-funded andself-released. At this point, would yousay this is the norm?

It might be the norm for me. For me togive up control and the financial side of it,a label would have to put up a lot of moneyto make it worth my while. My fanbasegrows every year, but I feel like I get to putout the record I want. There's no dead-lines and I get to make all the decisions, and I get to do it exactly the way I want. Icould continue to do this for the rest of my

career. We raised a hundred grand, whichis an amazing amount of money.

What can we expect to hear at yourNew Year's Day show (at One Longfel-low Square)?

It will be a mix of old and new materialwith lots of harmonies and cover songs.

CHARGE! By COLIN COVERT McClatchy Newspapers

Steven Spielberg, arguably the most popular filmmaker of the 20th century, has met his match: Steven Spielberg. He opened two

highly anticipated films just days apart. Last week came "The Adventures of Tin-tin," based on the globally popular comics, mixing adventure, slapstick, mystery and humor in photorealistic 3D animation. "War Horse," a poignant live-action drama about a farm animal that enters England's World War I cavalry, arrived on Christmas Day.

Never before has Spielberg faced such formidable competition.

Studios usually scramble to avoid scheduling big pictures head-to-head. But in a recent phone conversation, an upbeat Spielberg said he was delighted at the parallel premieres and unconcerned that he might be cannibalizing his audience.

"Hey, you know something? I'm blessed that this year I've been able to have two movies come out. I'm so happy that both these movies are coming out during the family movie-going season. I'm not think-

ing ahead to anything else. I never do. I've never ever held out expectations beyond hoping that the films do well."

He's done well, with two best-director Oscars (for "Schindler's List" and "Saving Private Ryan") and a career box-office gross of $6 billion and counting. His bankability is seen again this month, with production budgets of $70 million for "War

Horse" and $130 million for "Tintin." In an industry where egos loom large, the 64-year-old Spielberg is exceptionally unaffected. Whether he's discussing Peter ("Lord of the Rings") Jackson, who produced "Tintin," or animal trainer Bobby Lovgren, who worked with the equine performers on "War Horse," the filmmaker makes it sound as if he's just lucky to have

such talented teammates. Spielberg, who set the pattern for the

modern studio blockbuster with "Jaws," even had kind words for the animals.

"The horses were brilliant, and the trainers were the reason they were so brilliant. Bobby and his entire team of horse

With help, fabled Maine story to become feature-length fi lm E very Mainer knows the story of Donn

Fendler.In 1939, the 12-year-old Fendler

found himself lost in the deep woods sur-rounding Mount Katahdin. For nine days and nights, he fought hunger, dehydra-tion, vicious Maine insects and panic be-fore eventually emerging alive and some

16 pounds lighter.Filled with adven-

ture, drama and the mysterious and beautiful Maine wilderness as a set-ting, Fendler’s tale was turned into the beloved children’s book “Donn Fendler: Lost on a Mountain in Maine,” which, ob-viously, would make

a great fi lm.Unfortunately, Fendler hasn’t owned the

rights to his own story for decades. It was bought by some would-be fi lmmakers 20 years ago, but the project never material-ized, and one of Maine’s most cinematic true stories lay fallow.

That is, until a Maine fi lmmaker de-cided it was his mission to bring it to the big screen.

Waterville native Ryan Cook, alongside producing partner Derek Desmond, thinks Fendler’s boyhood adventure is perfect for a feature fi lm – and that he’s just the guy to make it.

“When I was in fourth grade, Donn came into my class to tell his story,” said Cook, “and it’s always been in the back of my mind to make his story into a movie. So we just called Donn up. … He couldn’t have been more welcoming, but he also warned us about the rights.”

In addition, another producer from Texas was offering “10 times the amount” they were, according to Cook. But in the

end, he and Desmond were able to con-vince Fendler that “this is a real Maine story, and a Mainer needs to be the one to tell it.”

Since meeting Fendler, Cook and Des-mond have made the documentary “Find-ing Donn Fendler: Lost on a Mountain in Maine 72 Years Later,” which played at both the Camden International Film Fes-tival and the Maine International Film Festival last year. Now they’re planning to turn Fendler’s tale into a feature fi lm.

Cook and Desmond have embarked upon a fundraising drive with the “crowdsourcing” site kickstarter.com (see donnfendlerfi lm.com for details), where Cook hopes the people of Maine will come out to support their goal of producing a professional trailer to show

RELEASES NEW ON THE SHELF

"DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK," starring Katie Holmes and Guy Pearce. Those of us who grew up in the 1970s may recall the many sleepless nights that followed after Mom and Dad foolishly let us stay up late to watch the 1973 TV-movie this effective upgrade is based upon, wherein a young woman (Kim "True Grit" Darby in the original and newcomer Bailee Madison here) is terrorized by tiny, demon-like creatures, and of course has no luck getting her parents (Holmes and Pearce) to believe her. Where the original declined to explain the existence of the creatures and was all the more effective and disturbing for it, first-time director Troy Nixey attempts to relay a few messages regarding childhood and parenting, with mixed results. When it concentrates on simply frightening its audience, however, "Dark" manages to recapture much of what made the original so special. Rated R. Running time: 1:39.

Suggested retail price: $30.99; Blu-ray $35.99.

"I DON'T KNOW HOW SHE DOES IT," starring Sarah Jessica Parker and Pierce Brosnan. Viewers still pining for the golden days of "Sex and the City" would seem to be the target audience for this overactive comedy, which attempts to convey the hectic insanity that comes with the territory of being a working mom in the big city. There's not a whole lot of suspense inherent in the "job vs. family" decision Parker's harried protagonist is forced to confront, but events progress pleasantly enough, and a dependable supporting cast (which includes Kelsey Gram-mer as her stolid boss and "Saturday Night Live" anchorman Seth Meyers as an obnoxious office rival) keeps things lively. Rated PG-13. Running time: 1:29.

Suggested retail price: $29.98; Blu-ray $39.99.

"SHARK NIGHT," starring Sara Paxton and Dustin Milligan. Admirably sincere attempt to pull off a straight-faced horror film that doesn't need to poke fun at itself every other frame is in the end no better or worse than any other "Jaws" ripoff that's come down the pike. Still, we applaud director David R. Ellis's ("Final Destination") noble attempt to craft actual believable characters out of his scantily clad college kids before tossing them to the great whites like so much chum. A decent throwback to pre-"Scream" by-the-numbers horror, and more than adequate Friday night viewing. Rated PG-13. Running time: 1:31.

Suggested retail price: $29.98; Blu-ray $39.99.

NEW TO DVD

"JUSTIFIED: THE COMPLETE SECOND SEASON," starring Timothy Olyphant and Nick Searcy. "Sons of Anarchy" and "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" tend to get the most attention when it comes to FX series, but we'll take the gritty, often funny exploits of U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Olyphant, bringing the same dogged cool he exhibited so memorably in "Deadwood") over those show-offs any day. Season 2 finds Givens ably protecting Harlan County from those who might exploit or destroy its well-meaning citizens, this time tangling with the formidable Mags Bennett (Margo Martindale of "Million Dollar Baby," who won a well-deserved Emmy for her fine work here) and her clan. Not rated, contains violence and language. Running time: 9:07.

Suggested retail price: $39.95; Blu-ray $49.95.

Katie Holmes stars, with Guy Pearce, in "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark."

Cullen. Hotshot lawyer and functioning drug addict Mike Weiss (Evans, "Captain America") finds himself tackling more than he can perhaps handle when he takes on a case involving widespread healthcare corruption, balancing an already massive case with his ever-increasing drug habit. A worthy attempt to get Evans out of his various superhero outfits and into more credible territory, "Puncture" makes the potentially odd combo of "Erin Brokovich" and "Requiem for a Dream" and makes it work, thanks largely to Evans' alternately engaging and troubling performance and a compelling fact-based story to draw from. Rated R. Running time: 1:40.

Suggested retail price: $28.99; Blu-ray $29.99.

NEW TO BLU-RAY

"PEARL JAM TWENTY," starring Eddie Ved-der, Stone Gossard. Even moderate fans of the pioneering grunge-rock band will find much to enjoy about this Cameron Crowe-helmed retrospective, which follows Vedder and company through two decades of constant touring and acclaimed albums. Not rated, contains some language. Running time: 2:26.

Suggested retail price: $29.98.

"SERENDIPITY," starring John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale. The boundaries of love and fate are charmingly tested in this well-loved 2001 romantic comedy, which finds potentially perfect couple Cusack and Beckinsale splitting up after a whirlwind romance, vowing to solidify the relationship if they ever encounter one another again. Those wondering if everything will work out for the crazy kids clearly haven't seen too many rom-coms, but the two leads are so appealing that anything other than a happy ending simply wouldn't do. Rated PG-13. Running time: 1:30.

Suggested retail price: $14.99.

"THE GUARD," starring Brendan Gleeson and Don Cheadle. Long an underrated but undeniably striking presence in the world of cinema, character actor Brendan Gleeson ("In Bruges") runs with a rare starring role opportunity in this gruffly hilarious directorial debut from writer John Michael McDonagh ("Ned Kelly"). Gleeson takes the notion of the "cop who doesn't play by the rules" a few steps further than most, reluctantly teaming with a more orthodox FBI agent (Cheadle, an excellent foil) to investigate an international drug-smuggling ring, a case the "Guard" has no real interest in helping to crack, distracting him as it does from caring for his ailing mum and cavorting with prostitutes. In the end, his tendency to interpret the law in his own personal fashion works mostly to the duo's benefit, but the various disagreements and catastrophes that happen in between are a lot of fun, and colorful side characters and quotable vulgarities abound in this enormously likable buddy comedy that suggests "In the Heat of the

Charlize Theron stars as a haughty yet insecure Minnesota writer of teen fictionwhose life is going nowhere in "Young Adult."

Something delightfully wickedthis way comes - 'Young Adult'

By COLIN COVERTMcClatchy Newspapers

"Young Adult," the new collaborationfrom "Juno" director Jason Reitman andwriter Diablo Cody, shares some stylisticnotes with their earlier effort. It's setin Minnesota, features a pop-saturatedsoundtrack (including the Replace-ments), a woman-child stuck betweenadolescence and adulthood, and a drollappreciation of daily life in suburbia. Yetit's a step in a new direction, both for thecreative team and for movies, a matureand humane comedy centered on a mis-anthropic female antihero.

Think of it as "Juno's" wicked stepsister.Charlize Theron plays Mavis Gary, a

divorced writer (or as she prefers it,"author") of "Sweet Valley High"-styleteen novels. Though she's 37, Mavis neverreally graduated from high school. HerMinneapolis high-rise apartment has thedepressing, slumlike impermanence of acrash pad. Her social life consists of badovernight hookups and lunches spentbelittling former acquaintances with acatty former classmate who fled Mercury,Minn., for the big (well, biggish) city.

At once haughty and insecure, Mavis isa textbook case of arrested development. To top it off, she's still obsessed with herformer high school sweetheart, BuddySlade (Patrick Wilson). Her fixation flareswhen Buddy's wife emails her an an-nouncement welcoming their newbornchild.

Mavis launches a mission to rescueBuddy from the bondage of family life,

heedless of the fact that he's utterlycontent as a new dad. Equipped with anarmory of makeup brushes, falsies andlethal little black dresses, she travelsback to her hometown to reclaim herman. The comedy of awkwardness ishoned to a stiletto edge. When two-facedMavis, in slinky cocktail attire, seductivelywheedles Buddy at a plaid-shirt sportsbar, she's as out of place as a black widowon a slice of apple pie.

Looking on mockingly is Matt (PattonOswalt), a wisecracking former classmateof Mavis and Buddy. Though he's physi-cally disabled from a brutal high schoolbullying attack, he's better adjusted thanMavis. As she pursues her romanticdelusion to its bleak conclusion, the twomisfits strike up an unlikely friendship. InMatt, Mavis discovers the one confidantwho might have saved her from termi-nal self-absorption, if only she had methim when she was still young enough tochange.

Edgy, subversive and hilariously embar-rassing, "Young Adult" undercuts the con-ventions of female-centered comedies at

"MILDRED PIERCE," starring Kate Winslet, GuyPearce. Good melodramas aren't as common asthey used to be, and it isn't surprising that mostmodern examples of the genre either borrowheavily or outright remake the work of the past, which is exactly what director Todd Haynes does,to brilliant effect, with this adaptation of theJames Cain novel, and by proxy the classic 1945

film version that famously sent the inimitableJoan Crawford home with an Oscar for herindelible performance. Here, Winslet ably fills infor Joan, and while no one could hope to matchCrawford when it comes to displaying pure, pri-mal rage, Winslet nicely conveys the complexi-ties and idiosyncrasies that make up her historywith her fairly insufferable daughter. In themeantime, suitors come a-calling, James LeGrosand Guy Pearce among them, further complicat-ing familial matters. This is an exhilarating takeon an old chestnut that does the original sourcematerial justice without upstaging it in anyway. Not rated, contains mild language, graphicsexual content, nudity and thematic material.Running time: 5:36.

Suggested retail price: $39.98; Blu-ray $49.99.

investors, some of whom have presented the filmmakers with a unique stipulation already.

"We've talked to people interested in investing larger sums of money in the project," said Cook, "and who want to know that there's larger interest in the film before they do."

The filmmakers have set a goal of $15,000, which, according to kickstarter's policy, must be raised before a deadline of Jan. 31. (As of this writing, the campaign has raised $3,190 from 22 backers, with 40 days left to get the rest.)

Cook is enthusiastic and optimistic, both about his film and the support of the Maine community, most of whom grew up thrilling to Fendler's childhood drama.

"Everyone we talk to has a personal connection with Donn's story," said Cook. "It's about determination and inspiration, and it's first and foremost about the

people of Maine. So we're looking to the Maine community to get the ball rolling.1

each turn. It manages to keep us invested in the story despite focusing almost every scene on a thoroughly unpleasant protagonist. The supporting characters provide the homespun humanity that Mavis lacks, especially Wilson as her Minnesota Nice former beau, and Elizabeth Reaser as his fun-loving wife.

Theron scores with a brave, darkly amusing performance as a onetime alpha female who sees life passing her by. She smiles charmingly while shooting death

rays from her eyes. In her scenes with Oswalt, Theron drops her character's mean-girl bravado, revealing the fear, loneliness and confusion beneath her Revlon mask.

"Young Adult's" skepticism that Mavis can fan these flickers of self-awareness into a flame of understanding is a gauge of its sophistication. Cody and Reitman would rather close their film on a lifelike, unresolved note than force its characters into a contrived happy ending. Audiences may not embrace Mavis immediately - she's too spiky for that. But there's little doubt that in time she'll join Marge Gunderson and Juno McGuff as another of Minnesota's enduring and iconic film characters.

In good companyBy BOB KEYES

Staff Writer

Tanja Hollander has some pretty stout company.

The Maine photographer has a solo show at the Portland Mu-seum of Art opening in February, joining the likes of Edgar Degas

and a host of world-famous photogra-phers whose work will be shown at the museum this winter.

n The big fi rst-fl oor show of the sea-son, opening in mid-February, is dedi-cated to Edgar Degas and his works on paper. “Edgar Degas: The Private Impressionist” marks the fi rst time the

museum has taken a comprehensive look at the 19th-century French master.

The exhibition includes more than 70 drawings, prints, pastels and photo-graphs, as well as several sculptures. The show will attempt to explore the oeuvre of one of the most complex art-ists in history.

The Degas show replaces the cur-

rent primary exhibition at the museum, “Gather Up the Fragments: The An-drews Shaker Collection.” The Shaker show is on view through Feb. 5, and tells the story of the avid collectors of Shaker art, Faith and Edward Deming Andrews. For 40 years beginning in the 1920s, the Andrews snatched up Shaker objects. This exhibition includes more than 200 objects, and features the work of Shaker communities in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and New York.

Matt Chamberlain serves a Jersey Joe Italian sandwich(above) at The Crooked Mile in Portland (inset).

ie'sa eaThe Crooked Mile leads the pack when it

comes to delicious food and superb service.hen noontime starva-tion had me in its gripsthe other day, I took thestraight and narrow pathdown to The Crooked Milein Portland. I hadn't been

there in years, but had a hunch I hadmade a good decision upon openingtheir door.

The joint was absolutely jumping, with the seating area pretty muchfilled to capacity and a formidableline that almost went out the door.I thought to myself, as my stomachgrowled, "This could take a while," butmuch to my delight, the staff at TheCrooked Mile operates like a well-oiledmachine. Within about five minutes, Iwas out the door, a Jersey Joe Italianin hand ($6.95, includes chips).

Dare I say it was one of the best

sandwiches I've ever had? Yep, I'msaying it, and with good reason. Firstoff, the baguette on which it wasserved was sheer perfection. Crispyyet chewy, it afforded a comfortablehome to the dense stack of ham, salami, pepperoni, provolone, lettuce, mayo, oil, vinegar and oregano. (Holdthe tomatoes for me, thanks).

This was the kind of sandwich thatteeth are meant to be sunk into, andrest assured, I did just that. The pep-peroni gave the sandwich all the zing itneeded, and every bite was a mouth-watering symphony of Italian joy.

I was so smitten with The CrookedMile, I went back the very next day.Again, the line was all but out the door, and again, the wait was surprisinglyshort.

Uncork a great beer to toast in the new year I t's traditional to pop

a cork of Champagne - the real stuff, from

the Champagne district of France - or other good sparkling wine at the stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve.

But real Champagne begins at about $20 - if you find a bargain - and you are well into three figures if you want Veuve Clicquot's Grand Dame, Perrier Jouet's Fleur de Champagne or Dom Perignon.

The Great Recession may be officially over, but the climb from its depths has been slow So it's time to drink beer instead of Champagne.

Not any beer, though. It has to be a special beer, a great beer.

And to keep up with the New Year's Eve tradition, I am going to recommend only beers with cork stoppers similar to the ones on Champagne. The most expensive 750-milliliter beers seldom cost more than $20, and for that $20, you get some of the best beer in the world.

Being in Portland, the beer that most fits the category is Allagash. Almost all of the Allagash beers except for Allagash White are found in 750-milliliter bottles stopped with

a real cork. Curieux, an ale with 11

percent alcohol aged in bourbon barrels, is the first Allagash that comes to mind. It's available year-round, it's won all sorts of awards, and

Tom AtWfill Allagash sells as much of it as it can make. The

What AleS YOU cloudy, golden color would be nice for a midnight toast.

But if you want to stay a bit closer to the wine tradition, drink either Victoria or Victor, both at 9 percent alcohol. Victoria includes char-donnay grapes in the mix, and part of the proceeds benefit Victoria Mansion, while Victor has cabernet franc grapes, with part of the proceeds benefitting St. Lawrence Performing Arts Center.

My personal favorite is Allagash Black, a wonderful Belgian stout at 7.5 percent alcohol, but I have yet to try the entire Allagash line. Most of the top-line Maine beer stores have an Allagash display, so all you have to do is read the descriptions and pick the one that sounds best to you.

At Oak Hill Beverage in Scarborough, Allagash prices ranged from $7.50 for Dubbel and $8.30 for Black to $21 for Interlude.

I saw Infinium, Boston Beer Co.'s

collaboration with the Bavarian brewer Weihenstephan, on the shelves at Le Roux Kitchen a couple of weeks ago, and it would be another good choice for New Year's Eve.

While the ale, at 10.3 percent alcohol, meets the German purity laws for beer, it looks and pours very much like a Champagne, and pours best into Champagne flutes. This is a nice, slightly sweet beer that I liked quite a bit last year, but I have yet to have any of this year's batch.

I recently talked with Phil Gaven at the Honey Exchange on Stevens Avenue in Portland about beers with honey in them (this will be the subject of a future column when I have time to do some tasting), and while talking with him, I saw two beers that fit the New Year's category.

Old Danish Braggot, brewed with honey and ginger from a recipe dating to 1700, comes in at 10.1 percent alcohol and costs $16. Brooklyn Brewery's Local 2, at $8.50 and with 9 percent alcohol, has raw wildflower honey and Belgian dark sugar.

Oak Hill had two other beers from Brooklyn - Local 1 at $7.30 and Black Ops, which was priced closer to $20.1 have really liked the Brooklyn beers, but have not had any of these.

All of the Ommegang beers that I wrote about in November fit the category, and Oak Hill had those available for $6 to $8. They also had Ommegang's Biere de Mars, which I had never heard of, so I bought it. It costs $11, and is brewed with Brettanomyces Bruxellensis yeast, a wild Belgian yeast that adds a tartness/sourness to ale that you either love or hate. I will taste it sometime over the New Year's weekend and give you a report.

Touring Oak Hill Beverage to research this column, I was surprised by how many beers have Champagne-style corks.

Beers from Unibroue are about $7, Sierra Nevada's Ovila line of Saison and Abbey ales were $11, and the Samuel Adams Barrel Room Collection were about $10.

It's amazing how many of these beers I have never tasted. It is going to be a busy new year.

As sports bars go, Binga's is definitely major leagueBy EMMA BOUTHILLETTE

Binga's - it's fun to say, and it's alsoa fun place to grab a drink.

I met a friend at Binga's StadiumSmokehouse & Sports Bar in Portlandon a recent night to take a break fromthe hectic holiday shopping. When Iarrived, my friend was already sippingon her margarita served in a pintglass. I sat down next to her at oneend of the seemingly mile-long bar.

The bartender quickly informed methat the night's beer special was BassAle. Binga's offers a different beerevery night, usually a local brew, at adiscounted price of $3 for a pint and $4for a 20-ounce glass.

Between the specialty of the nightand 27 other beers on tap - plus every-thing from well drinks to top-shelfliquor -1 was slightly overwhelmed.I cdecided after much deliberation ona 20-ounce glass of Woodchuck HardCider.

You can take advantage of the dailybeer special or the $5 pitcher of PabstBlue Ribbon on Monday throughThursday, and cocktails will run youat least $5.50. The price goes up fromthere, depending on the liquor youchoose, the bartender said. All of thebartenders have many years' experi-ence, so they're well-versed in mixingyour cocktails and pouring the beer,he said.

I saw that firsthand in the promptand friendly service from the bar-tender serving us. We even got a bitof sing-along with the music playingin the background, and some dancingbetween serving up drinks.

Once I settled into my bar seat andtook a sip of cider, I realized whyBinga's is the ultimate sports bar.Everywhere you turn, there's a TVwithin view.

Sports fanatics can park it at on oneof the bar stools, pub tables or boothsand watch endless games and sportshighlights. You can even request oneof the seven booths equipped withpersonal TVs that you can controlyourself.

But if you're not into the sports

scene, Binga's knows how to throw aparty, too. It hosts ladies' night withdancing on the lower level from 9 p.m.to 1 a.m. every Wednesday. It alsohosts special events, like the Hallow-een party I went to back in October. The dance floor was jam-packed thatnight, and music kept people dancinguntil 1 a.m.

After we sipped on our drinks for abit, my friend and I decided to ordersome food. Wanting to sample someof Binga's famed wing sauces, but notwanting the mess of wings, we optedfor the less messy chicken tenders.

I got mine smothered in the Jamai-can Jerk sauce, which was absolutelydelicious. My friend got the Thai BBQversion, which was equally delicious. She also insisted on getting the friedpickle chips side dish. I'm not as big afan of them as she is.

I polished off my half order of ten-ders, though, washing it down withsome hard cider. There's nothing likewings and a good drink for a breakfrom the bustle.

This time, I opted for theChicken Bleu sandwich($6.95), and my only trouble isthat I can't decide which oneI loved more. The ChickenBleu was served on thatsame divine baguette andconsisted of grilled chicken, blue cheese crumbles, wal-nuts, red onions and greenswith balsamic vinaigrette. Ihad a Julie Andrews moment,

because those are all a few ofmy favorite things.

What's more, I ran into afriend who was picking upa Cranberry Bog salad, so Ipleaded with her to chime inon it. Forty-five minutes later, she emailed me with thesesentiments:

"The Cranberry Bog saladmakes for a lunch you canlook forward to - and peopledon't tend to look forwardto salads. It's huge, with anample sprinkling of cranber-ries and walnuts, topped withchicken salad. The (dressing

is an accompaniment, nota cover-up. And best of all, regardless of how busy thelunchtime rush is, the saladis still turned around in re-cord time."

I have a feeling we'll bebumping into each otherthere again, because I'm de-termined to try pretty mucheverything on the entiremenu, including the breakfastsandwiches and sweet treats,in the coming months.

Shea's Veggie Wrap for$5.50 (provolone, hummus, cukes, tomatoes, carrots, red

onion and mixed greens) andthe Jersey Joe Chop Saladfor $6.95 (salad version ofthe sandwich) are high onthe list, and if you're a fanof beets, here's one for you:The Beatnik ($6.95), in bothsandwich and salad form, fea-tures beets, grilled chicken, roasted almond slivers andred onions with arugula andred wine vinaigrette.

'Just the right amount of quirky' at Space's Icing bashBy AVERY YALE KAMILA

When it comes to celebrating NewYear's eve, the options are endless. Somewill opt to sip Champagne at a fancysoiree, others will guzzle Champagne ata sweaty dance party and many more willimbibe Champagne on the couch whilewatching the ball drop with Dick Clarkand Ryan Seacrest. But for those whocount themselves among the creative set, there's really only one choice: Icing.

Hosted by Space Gallery for the pasttwo years, Icing brings together visualand performing art with Champagne andfinger foods for a one-of-a-kind party.

"I don't want to give away too much,"said Space's events programmer NickRosenblum. "But it's going to be just theright amount of quirky. The goal is to cre-ate an upscale, enjoyable experience."

The festivities begin at 9 p.m. with theMiddle Eastern rhythms of Okbari. Theduo will be followed by the electronicinstallations and music of Galen Rich-mond's Computer at Sea.

"Part of his performance involves vin-tage television sets," Rosenblum said togive a hint of what's in store for partygo-ers.

Leading up to midnight, Dilly Dilly (akaErin Olivia Davidson) takes to the stageto bring her unique blend of vocals andeclectic instruments, including trumpet, banjo and toy accordion.

"The early part of the evening is likeyou're going to a futuristic and whimsical

The dance track begins after themidnight Champagne toast and comescourtesy of brothers Nathaniel and DavidMeiklejohn. Accompanying the dancegrooves will be a video projection created

by the brothers.Throughout the affair, guests will be

enveloped in an interesting array of visualart.

Artist John Bundling, who has worked inNew York City doing theater set design, plans to transform one room of the galleryinto an Op Art-inspired installation using

a large quantity of rope.Nearby, a wall will feature the work of

Bowdoin sculpture professor Alicia Eg-gert and photographer Mike Flemming. This will be more than a two-demensionalpainting, since it promises to offer akinetic element.

Known for his interior murals, artistColin Sullivan-Stevens will be live paintingduring the party, allowing guests to bothview his process and ask him questions.

Local restaurants will provide appe-tizers - both sweet and savory - whichguests can pair with a curated wine listavailable at the cash bar. The list of wines

As Rosenblum pointed out, Icing is "notlike any other New Year's party."

SPIELBERG Continued from Page E13

DreamWorks Pictures

Director Steven Spielberg, far right, observes Jerenny Irvine, left, rehearse a scene with Joey on the set of "War Horse," an epic adventure set against a sweeping canvas of rural England and Europe during the First World War.

whisperers did the most amazing job of getting the script needs and my needs to the animals, who not only performed what they were supposed to perform, they were improvising all the time and we got things we never expected a horse can do on film," he said. "It's harder to work with a mechanical shark, of course. Because a live horse actually listens to me."

"War Horse" presented logistical challenges, from the animal cast (up to 280 horses were used in a single scene) to the ever-changing clouds and light above the English moors. Spielberg was determined to shoot a key scene in the rain - "not Hollywood rain but real rain" - and the weather was uncooperative.

For "Tintin," he faced another series of hurdles. The technical questions involved in motion-capture animation were familiar enough. The real trick was creating a franchise around a 70-year-old Belgian cartoon character. The Smurfs crossed the Atlantic successfully, but Tintin has had a tough time cracking the U.S. market. Many American moviegoers don't know Tintin from Rin Tin Tin, the soulful German shepherd.

Georges Remi, better known as Herge, wrote and drew 23 adventures for his boy reporter between 1929 and 1976. The series has been a Harry Potter-level phenomenon around the world for decades, selling some 200 million copies. Yet outside high-end bookstores, Spielberg admitted, it has remained obscure here. Spielberg himself didn't discover Tintin until 1980 or so, he recalled, and read the series to each of his six children in turn. The series, with its dynamic visuals and colorful characters, instantly struck Spielberg as movie material, and he snapped up the rights back in 1983. Adapting it was the trick.

"I wanted this to be classic Herge, faithful to the man who invented and sustained Tintin for all those years," he said. And 30 years ago, that would have been tough to achieve. "I didn't want it to be live action. I knew that if I dressed up actors in those

fun. The same goes for much of the pop mu

sic of the 1980s. And The Awesome is the right band to deliver it. They take it very seriously, too.

"That's all we do: Strictly '80s music, trying to get as close to the originals as possible, in terms of the original synthesizer sound, the bass tone, all of it," said Stu Mahan, bass player and singer for the Portland-based band. "It's just danceable, fun music. It's party music, really."

The Awesome's song list includes hits by Duran Duran, Talking Heads, Tears for Fears - even Madonna and Whitney Houston. (They've got both female and male singers.)

Bayside Bowl is a bowling alley - and a restaurant, and a music venue with a sizable stage area and dance floor. So like the Love Boat itself, there will be enough

costumes it'd be a very eccentric live-action film. Very eccentric costumes and very eccentric hair styles. I didn't want it to be 'Baron Munchausen,' if you know what I mean, with overstylized looks for all the characters. So that choice was made pretty early to animate Tintin. Animation was a closer medium to Herge's art. It would be the best way to translate Herge to audiences around the world."

It took three decades for performance-capture technology to reach the high water mark Spielberg knew the project required. While "Avatar" was still in pro-

diverse activities to make any would-be cruise director happy. It promises something for everyone, you might say.

Charlie Mitchell, co-owner and general manager of Bayside Bowl, says the place decided to host a "Love Boat" party even before The Awesome was booked to play. There's a long ramp entrance to the place, and Mitchell figured it would make people feel like they're coming up the gangplank of a ship.

There will be seafood specials from Bayside Bowl's restaurant, a costume contest, and bowling for $20.11 an hour. (Get it? 20/11?) The regular price is $30 an hour.

At midnight, there will be a complimentary Champagne toast and a bowling-ball drop to ring in the new year.

So set a course for adventure, your mind on a new romance. Let it flow, and it will flow back to you.

duction, he hired that film's special-effects wizards to swing over to his film next. "I was very fortunate to have those same animators."

The film travels from the sea to the Sahara and back again, a journey chocka-block with the extravagant action sequences that are Spielberg's signature. The film already has opened to stupendous success in Europe and Canada. There have been holdouts, however. England's Guardian newspaper called the film "great art crudely redrawn." Spielberg doesn't begrudge the critics.

"I appreciate people's points of view, everybody brings something different to every movie they see. There were actually very few purists who came after us. We decided to go through a baptism of fire by premiering the film in Belgium, the home of Tintin, and then France, a country that has carried a torch for Tintin for seven decades. We decided to bite the bullet and go into the heart of Herge country, and the film was received with wild enthusiasm and tremendous applause, so we feel vindicated by that." The sequels are already gearing up.
