    GM-SYS Profile Modeling Aug 13, 2006

    New in GM-SYS

    SEG-Y Reader

The SEG-Y Reader application, available only with GM-SYS Advanced Profile Modeling, converts 2D and 3D SEG-Y standard files to formats that may be used in GM-SYS, GMSYS-3D, and Oasis montaj. SEG-Y Reader may be run as a stand-alone application, or may be called from within GM-SYS Profile when loading a SEG-Y file as a Backdrop. It may also be started from within Oasis montaj, but there is no linkage between the applications. Writing a Geosoft file (grid, database, or geosoft_voxel) requires an Oasis montaj license.

A 2D SEG-Y file can be converted to a Windows Bitmap (BMP) suitable for importing into GM-SYS Profile, an oriented Geosoft Grid (GRD) that may be displayed in a 3D View (GMSYS-3D or other), or a Geosoft Database (GDB). Configuration options allow the file to be projected onto any vertical plane (e.g. a GM-SYS Profile model), to be windowed or decimated in the X (distance) and/or Z (time or depth) directions, and the vertical scale and units to be modified. Trace coordinates from trace headers may be used, or they may be imported from a separate navigation file.

A 3D SEG-Y file can be converted to a Geosoft Database or a 3D Geosoft grid (geosoft_voxel), which may be incorporated into a GMSYS-3D model, displayed in 3D Views, or exported to another 3D format (e.g. GOCAD). Currently, the voxel size information (orientation, sample spacing, and rotation) must be entered by hand.

    Horizontal Magnetic Gradient (Btx) Calculations

GM-SYS Advanced Profile modeling now calculates the horizontal (Btx) magnetic gradient. GXs have been rewritten to allow this gradient data to be included in new models created from within Oasis montaj, whether from a database or a series of grids. You may also import horizontal magnetic gradient data into an existing model.

Improved horizon import from Oasis montaj

The maximum number of horizons incorporated into a new model from Oasis montaj has been increased to 15. When extracting a model from grid profiles, specify up to 15 horizon grids, or specify up to 15 horizon channels from a Geosoft database. A new option in each dialog allows you to specify whether the horizon information is depth (i.e. positive down) or elevation (i.e. positive up) for the selected grids or channels; all must be the same orientation.

Use either old Raster or new Vector Patterns.

For backward compatibility, you may elect to use to the old raster patterns when displaying or printing your model. While the new vector patterns are intended to mimic the original raster patterns as closely as possible, they are not exactly the same. For purposes of exact reproduction, use the raster patterns.

Select the Use old raster patterns in model view check-box in the Preferences (File | Preferences | Miscellaneous) to enable the old style patterns. Using raster patterns may obscure Bitmap Backdrop images, since the raster patterns cannot be made transparent.

  • Simplify Surfaces

Oversampled surfaces force GM-SYS to perform unnecessary calculations and make editing a model more cumbersome. This commonly occurs when models or surfaces are extracted from grids or imported from seismic processing or other applications. The Simplify function allows you to remove redundant points from an existing surface. Select Examine (the eyeball on the toolbar) and click on the surface between points (you may have to zoom in). The surface spreadsheet will be displayed. You can scroll down to the bottom of the spreadsheet to see how many points are in the surface. Click on [Simplify], enter a "Straightening Tolerance" and click OK. You can check the # of points in the spreadsheet to see how many it removed before you save it. If too few points were removed, click on simplify again and adjust the straightening tolerance. If too many points are removed, select [Cancel] and select the surface again. When you are ready to save the decimated surface back in the model, just click on OK. This step may be slow on big models.

You can also Simplify a surface when you are importing it as a file using the [ImpSurf] function. A new Straightening tolerance field has been added to the import dialog. If you leave it set at 0, it has no effect; otherwise it will decimate the file as it brings it in. If you don't approve of the changes, click [Clear] and Load the file again.

    Axis Scaling in CVTGMS

Occasionally, a model may be built using the wrong axis units. A new Scale Axes feature in CVTGMS allows the X and/or Z axes to be scaled independently by any factor.

    Bug Fixes:

In addition there are a number of improvements to existing features:

GM-SYS uses geosoft.key to locate license manager. Fixed memory corruption of Oasis montaj when drawing Plan View to Map. Cursor "jumped" when entering paper dimensions in Print dialog. Improved the color/pattern selection tool in the Examine Block dialog. LCT 2-Mod import didnt handle residual gravity field. Fix hang when zooming in the anomaly window(s). IHF output had wrong units flag for X coordinate. Fixed spike in magnetic and gradient calculations when station located directly over a vertical

    boundary.

Removed quotes when copying from GM-SYS spreadsheets to external files (e.g. Oasis montaj databases).

    Fixed backdrop registration problem.
