Weekly Group Activities and Classes

MondaysAwakening Your Windhorse:Mind-Body Wellbeing Class ~ 2:30-4:00pm Come rouse your windhorse in this new community program. In this program we willexplore what health and wellness mean to you. Windhorse is an uplifting energy that helpsa person to heal and overcome depression in the process of recovery. In this program youwill practice skills to cultivate self-compassion and health through your mind, body, andactions. The vibrancy of health and wellness is accessible in every moment, and in thisprogram we hope to help you discover an experience of wellbeing that will last you into thefuture and into recovery. June 6 – Group Discussion and Skill Building: The first Monday of each month we willdiscuss our progress over the past month. We will learn about the dimensions of wellbeing,and find the areas we want to cultivate and improve. We will practice skills that can help usalong the path to health and recovery* Exploring the Dimensions of Wellbeing and Setting Personal Intentions June 13 – Exploration and Adventure: Each month we will explore a new activity out inthe world. Anything from hiking to rock climbing; we want to discover what excites you andhow you can become an expert in chasing down your dreams. Suggestions are welcome.* Wonderland Lake Walk and Lucky’s Bakehouse June 20 – Nutrition Kitchen: Each month we will make delicious meals that will satisfyour hunger and support our mind and body.· This month we will make fruit smoothies. If there is a certain fruit or ingredient you wouldlike, make sure to let us know, or pick one up yourself so we can try out some personalexperiments.· We will also plan activities for the next month.

June 27 – Intro to Yoga and Body Dynamics: Each month we will learn more about themind-body connection and how that plays a role in our ability to awaken our windhorse.We will learn about the breath and practice basic yoga flows and poses that will helpincrease strength, endurance, and focus.* Introduction to Yoga and Body Dynamics Groups facilitated by Art Ginley, JoAnn Burton, and Judy Halloran.

Tuesdays & ThursdaysStress Management ~ 1:30-3:00pm *Starts June 7Stress is a normal part of life that canmotivate us and bring us opportunitiesto learn and grow. It can also bephysically and psychologically harmfuland cause series problems that caninterfere with our Recovery Journey.This class is designed to study stressand share ways we can manage iteffectively Contact JoAnn: [email protected]

WednesdaysSocial Rec Group ~ 1:15-3:15pm This group is led by Cara. The group decides on the activities, and an email is sent outevery week with details of that week's activity - including movies, hiking and walking, socialgatherings, crafts, games, etc. Please bring your own spending money, generally around

Monthly Happenings

Family Support Group ~ May 9, 5:00-6:30pm The Family Support group meets on the 2nd Monday of each month, from 5-6:30pm, and isco-led by Kathy and Jeanne. After Hours Social Club is a place to gather, to sharegifts, musical or otherwise, with friends andcommunity members. Bring a song, poem, or a joketo share on the Social Club stage, or just come by toenjoy the Social Club "vibe", for an evening ofcreative sharing and social fun. Windhorse Community Programs Meet and Greet ~ Please join us for a free lunch on the last Friday of each month. This is a chance for new clients and existing clients to come together to meet each other and the staff. At this time we will discuss the latest in Community Programs and invite feedback and suggestions. If you would like to help prepare the lunch please be there by 10:30am.

Focus Story

Windhorse Community Services in Boston! JoAnn Dorio Burton and Kristin Becker have been invited to speak at theRecovery Workforce Summit in Boston next Tuesday, May 24th. This 3 dayconference is held annually and is presented by the Psychiatric RehabAssociation. Over 1000 participants including, professionals, (administratorsand practitioners) people with lived experiences and family members attendthis event. JoAnn and Kristin, representing WCS, feel honored to be selectedas presenters and are excited to share the Hero's Journey curriculum withthe Psych Rehab community. They also look forward to attending theplenaries, and workshops, learning about innovative approaches in workingwith people and networking with fellow attendees.

The Hero's Journey: An Innovative Approach to Exploring theRecovery Process and Empowering The Hero Within

Pat Deegan encourages us all to "suspend (our) perception of people aschronic mental patients and try to see the individual as a hero." Inspired byPat Deegan and the stories of countless heroes both fictional and non-fictional, the Hero’s Journey curriculum, developed by JoAnn Dorio Burtonand Kristin Becker, takes participants on their own hero's journey. Byexploring parallels between the hero's journey and the recovery journey it ispossible to shift perception from that of a victim to that of a hero. Suddenly, harrowing experiences are seen as bolstering rather than

destructive, and a remarkable inner strength is brought to life. Thejourneyman is transformed. This Ted-like talk will give participants asampling of the Hero’s Journey curriculum, why it was developed and how itcan be used as a creative tool to help people in recovery.
