Airlines

Fly with Confidence• Know that most airlines do not provide gluten-free in-flight
snacks• Most domestic flights do not provide meals of any kind• Request a gluten-free meal on most international flights in
advance• Grab a backup gluten-free snack at nearly any airport• Always pack extra gluten-free snacks!
• Note: Some snacks are not approved for carry-ons or do not travel well, plan ahead

Fly with Flexibility
• Pack some snacks in your carry-on, but see what’s at the airport when you get there– IMPORTANT: Also carry ALL medication in your carry-on– Some airports may not have many gluten-free options, so be prepared
to eat a banana and some yogurt instead of a hearty gluten-free sandwich or cereal
• Having flexibility is easier for shorter, domestic flights, but is probably more difficult for international travel

How to be Flexible if Your Hotel Accommodations Fall Through
• If you can’t drive another mile and want to take an unplanned break for the night, look for hotels with kitchenettes (usually used for long business trips)
• If a hotel can’t provide an in-room fridge:– Ask if you can keep your gluten-free foods in a staff fridge– Bring a cooler and periodically refill it with ice to keep your food cold
• If a hotel can’t provide an in-room microwave:– Ask if they have one in a break room you can use

Getting Glutened
How to be Confident when Preparing for Accidental Glutening
(And Self-Sufficient if it Happens!)• Water, water, water• To soothe your stomach, try herbal tea with ginger• Consider trying the BRAT (bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast) diet• Take any medications approved by your doctor that seem to help
with your symptoms when exposed to gluten, such as antacids or headache medicine
• Rest, relax, and recover—even if it means postponing vacation fun

How to Prepare So You Can be Flexible During an Accidental Glutening
• Your reaction may depend on your body’s sensitivity and the level of gluten exposure
• Prepare to be flexible with the severity of your reaction– Know where the nearest hospitals and urgent care clinics are at
your destination– Bring pertinent medical information with you on your trip, such
as a comprehensive list of all medicines you currently take, your doctor’s contact information, and your insurance card
