Public Hearing
GREENBELT MUSEUM
The Greenbelt City Council will hold s Public Hearing to · /!OI_lSider. ~!-Y. &,UPJ:IOrt ~f a Gi'eel\belt Mulieum. It is proposed· that a small museum be established to house objects of historic and artistic interest relating to Greenbelt's ro}e.as one of America's earliest planned communities. It is proposed to acquire a GHI home to used to house the museum and eventually to acquire an entire duplex buildiJ?.g. A portion of_ t_he home_ will _be restored as a typi~ home of an ortgmsl famtly wtth representative furni~hings, clothing and decorations. There also will be temporary exhibits focusing on specialized aspects of the New Deal period and Greenbelt history. The establishment of the museum is one of the projects of the Greenbelt ~Oth Anniversary Committee.
Issues to be discussed are;
Should the City financially assist in the cost of a mll8enm along with the Friends of the Greenbelt Muesum (FOGM), a nonprofit fund-raising organization committed to provide financial suPport towards the operation of a museum?
Should the City. purchase one or more original homes to·be used to house the museum?
Should the City specifically seek to acquire the home at 10-B Crescent Road to be the initial home ~or the museum-?
The owner of 10-B Crescent. which is part of a duplex bui!dfDg, has illdicated a willinaness to sell the home for a museum. The home is located next to s playground, UDderpaas and luterior walkways - all original features of the pi&Jmed eommtulity. It is acroSB from the Greenbelt Llbrlllz7. ,~ coataina the Rexford G. Tugwell Room whieb hOWiell a wide variety of printed material on Greeabelt &DCL planned communities. It is close to ltoo88velt Center and aext to· the Greenbelt Trail.
